Abstract:Elastic scattering of alpha-particle and some tightly-bound light nuclei has shown the pattern of rainbow scattering at medium energies, which is due to the refraction of the incident wave by a strongly attractive nucleus-nucleus potential. This review gives an introduction to the physics of the nuclear rainbow based essentially on the optical model description of the elastic scattering. Since the realistic nucleus-nucleus optical potential (OP) is the key to explore this interesting process, an overview of the main methods used to determine the nucleus-nucleus OP is presented. The refractive rainbow-like structures observed in other quasi-elastic scattering reactions have also been discussed. Some evidences for the refractive effect in the elastic scattering of unstable nuclei are presented and perspectives for the future studies are discussed.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand and describe the rainbow scattering phenomenon in nucleus - nucleus elastic scattering, especially the relationship between this phenomenon and the nucleus - nucleus potential. Specifically: 1. **Explain the physical mechanism of nuclear rainbow scattering**: The paper explains the rainbow scattering patterns observed in the elastic scattering of alpha particles and some tightly - bound light nuclei at intermediate energies through the Optical Model (OM). This phenomenon is caused by the refraction of the incident wave by the strongly attractive nucleus - nucleus potential. 2. **Determine the Nucleus - Nucleus Optical Potential (OP)**: The paper emphasizes the importance of a realistic nucleus - nucleus optical potential for studying this interesting process and reviews the main methods used to determine the nucleus - nucleus OP. In particular, since the absorption in the rainbow system is far weaker than that usually observed in heavy - ion elastic scattering, the observed rainbow pattern is directly related to the density overlap when the two nuclei penetrate each other in the elastic channel, and the total density can reach twice the nuclear matter saturation density \(\rho_0\). 3. **Introduce the density - dependent effective M3Y interaction**: In order to calculate the nucleus - nucleus OP, the density dependence of the G - matrix elements based on the Reid and Paris nucleon - nucleon (NN) potentials is introduced in the double - folding model. Most of the elastic rainbow scattering data are found to be best described by the deep real OP given by this density - dependent M3Y interaction. 4. **Explore the nuclear equation of state**: In the Hartree - Fock form, the same NN interaction consistently gives a soft equation of state for cold nuclear matter, with an incompressibility constant \(K\approx230 - 260 \, \text{MeV}\). Through the folding analysis of multiple rainbow systems, it is proved that the elastic alpha - nucleus and nucleus - nucleus refractive rainbow scattering are very useful experiments for determining the realistic \(K\) values. 5. **Discuss other related phenomena**: The paper also discusses the rainbow - like refractive structures observed in other quasi - elastic scattering reactions and shows some evidence of refractive effects in the elastic scattering of unstable nuclei, and looks forward to future research directions. In conclusion, this paper aims to provide new insights into the nucleus - nucleus interaction and verify the validity of different theoretical models through in - depth research on the nuclear rainbow scattering phenomenon.
