Abstract:We say that the vanishing viscosity limit holds in the classical sense if the velocity for a solution to the Navier-Stokes equations converges in the energy norm uniformly in time to the velocity for a solution to the Euler equations. We prove, for a bounded domain in dimension 2 or higher, that the vanishing viscosity limit holds in the classical sense if and only if a vortex sheet forms on the boundary.

Abstract:Whether, in the presence of a boundary, solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations converge to a solution to the Euler equations in the vanishing viscosity limit is unknown. In a seminal 1983 paper, Tosio Kato showed that the vanishing viscosity limit is equivalent to having sufficient control of the gradient of the Navier-Stokes velocity in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity. In a 2008 paper, the present author showed that the vanishing viscosity limit is equivalent to the formation of a vortex sheet on the boundary. We present here several observations that follow on from these two papers.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity limit of one-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity, to the isentropic compressible Euler equations. Based on several new uniform estimates to the viscous systems, in addition to the framework recently established by G. Chen and M. Perepelitsa, we justify that the finite energy solution of the isentropic compressible Euler equations for a large class of initial data can be obtained as the inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations even when the viscosity depends on the density.

Abstract:In the vanishing viscosity limit from the Navier-Stokes to Euler equations on domains with boundaries, a main difficulty comes from the mismatch of boundary conditions and, consequently, the possible formation of a boundary layer. Within a purely interior framework, Constantin and Vicol showed that the two-dimensional viscosity limit is justified for any arbitrary but finite time under the assumption that on each compactly contained subset of the domain, the enstrophies are bounded uniformly along the viscosity sequence. Within this framework, we upgrade to local strong convergence of the vorticities under a similar assumption on the $p$-enstrophies, $p>2$. The key novel idea is the analysis of the evolution of the weak convergence defect.

Abstract:We study the limiting behavior of viscous incompressible flows when the fluid domain is allowed to expand as the viscosity vanishes. We describe precise conditions under which the limiting flow satisfies the full space Euler equations. The argument is based on truncation and on energy estimates, following the structure of the proof of Kato's criterion for the vanishing viscosity limit. This work complements previous work by the authors, see [Kelliher, Comm. Math. Phys. 278 (2008), 753-773] and [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0801.4935v1" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0801.4935v1">arXiv:0801.4935v1</a>].

Abstract:This paper studies the inviscid limit of the two‐dimensional incompressible viscoelasticity, which is a system coupling a Navier‐Stokes equation with a transport equation for the deformation tensor. The existence of global smooth solutions near the equilibrium with a fixed positive viscosity was known since the work of [35]. The inviscid case was solved recently by the second author [28]. While the latter was solely based on the techniques from the studies of hyperbolic equations, and hence the two‐dimensional problem is in general more challenging than that in higher dimensions, the former was relied crucially upon a dissipative mechanism. Indeed, after a symmetrization and a linearization around the equilibrium, the system of the incompressible viscoelasticity reduces to an incompressible system of damped wave equations for both the fluid velocity and the deformation tensor. These two approaches are not compatible. In this paper, we prove global existence of solutions, uniformly in both time t ∈ [0, +∞) and viscosity μ ≥ 0. This allows us to justify in particular the vanishing viscosity limit for all time. In order to overcome difficulties coming from the incompatibility between the purely hyperbolic limiting system and the systems with additional parabolic viscous perturbations, we introduce in this paper a rather robust method that may apply to a wide class of physical systems of similar nature. Roughly speaking, the method works in the two‐dimensional case whenever the hyperbolic system satisfies intrinsically a "strong null condition." For dimensions not less than three, the usual null condition is sufficient for this method to work. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the inviscid limit for the periodic solutions to Navier–Stokes equation in the framework of Gevrey class. It is shown that the lifespan for the solutions to Navier–Stokes equation is independent of viscosity, and that the solutions of the Navier–Stokes equation converge to that of Euler equation in Gevrey class as the viscosity tends to zero. Moreover, the convergence rate in Gevrey class is presented. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A dyadic shell model for the Navier–Stokes equations is studied in the context of turbulence. The model is an infinite nonlinearly coupled system of ODEs. It is proved that the unique fixed point is a global attractor, which converges to the global attractor of the inviscid system as viscosity goes to zero. This implies that the average dissipation rate for the viscous system converges to the anomalous dissipation rate for the inviscid system (which is positive) as viscosity goes to zero. This phenomenon is called the dissipation anomaly predicted by Kolmogorov’s theory for the actual Navier–Stokes equations.

Abstract:We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes and Euler equations in a bounded domain with non-characteristic boundary condition, and study the energy dissipation near the outflow boundary in the zero-viscosity limit. We show that in a general setting, the energy dissipation rate is proportional to $\bar U \bar V ^2$, where $\bar U$ is the strength of the suction and $\bar V$ is the tangential component of the difference between Euler and Navier-Stokes on the outflow boundary. Moreover, we show that the enstrophy within a layer of order $\nu / \bar U$ is comparable with the total enstrophy. The rate of enstrophy production near the boundary is inversely proportional to $\nu$.

Abstract:The vanishing viscosity limit of the two-dimensional (2D) compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is studied in the case that the corresponding 2D inviscid Euler equations admit a planar rarefaction wave solution. It is proved that there exists a family of smooth solutions for the 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations converging to the planar rarefaction wave solution with arbitrary strength for the 2D Euler equations. A uniform convergence rate is obtained in terms of the viscosity coefficients away from the initial time. In the proof, the hyperbolic wave is crucially introduced to recover the physical viscosities of the inviscid rarefaction wave profile, in order to rigorously justify the vanishing viscosity limit.

Abstract:In a three-dimensional bounded domain $\Omega$ we consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a barotropic fluid with general non-linear density dependent viscosities and no-slip boundary conditions. A nonlinear drag term is added to the momentum equation. We establish two conditional Kato-type criteria for the convergence of the weak solutions to such a system towards the strong solution of the compressible Euler system when the viscosity coefficient and the drag term parameter tend to zero.

Abstract:For the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in with low viscosity , we consider the Cauchy problem with initial vorticity that represents an infinitely thin vortex filament of arbitrary given strength supported on a circle. The vorticity field of the solution is smooth at any positive time and corresponds to a vortex ring of thickness that is translated along its symmetry axis due to self-induction, an effect anticipated by Helmholtz in 1858 and quantified by Kelvin in 1867. For small viscosities, we show that is well-approximated on a large time interval by , where is the solution of the heat equation with initial data , and is the instantaneous velocity given by Kelvin's formula. This gives a rigorous justification of the binormal motion for circular vortex filaments in weakly viscous fluids. The proof relies on the construction of a precise approximate solution, using a perturbative expansion in self-similar variables. To verify the stability of this approximation, one needs to rule out potential instabilities coming from very large advection terms in the linearized operator. This is done by adapting V. I. Arnold's geometric stability methods developed in the inviscid case to the slightly viscous situation. It turns out that although the geometric structures behind Arnold's approach are no longer preserved by the equation for , the relevant quadratic forms behave well on larger subspaces than those originally used in Arnold's theory and interact favorably with the viscous terms.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish vanishing viscosity limit of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations in a horizontally periodic strip. On the vertical direction, the horizontal component of the velocity is subjected to two different types of boundary conditions: at the lower boundary, we give the degenerate zero boundary condition, while at the upper boundary, a small smooth perturbation of non-zero constant is prescribed. Due to this different boundary condition setting, the boundary layer effects are different near the lower and upper boundaries, which result in different thickness of boundary layer and different leading order boundary layer equations. We will construct an approximate solution to this 2D Navier-Stokes equations by using higher order asymptotic approximation and show the validity of the boundary layer expansion. The leading order of the Euler solution is the Couette flow $(Ay,0)$ for some suitable constant $A$, which is determined by using the principle of the Prandtl-Batchelor theory.

Abstract:We prove the convergence of the vanishing viscosity limit of the one-dimensional, isentropic, compressible Navier-Stokes equations to the isentropic Euler equations in the case of a general pressure law. Our strategy relies on the construction of fundamental solutions to the entropy equation that remain controlled for unbounded densities, and employs an improved reduction framework to show that measure-valued solutions constrained by the Tartar commutation relation (but with possibly unbounded support) reduce to a Dirac mass. As the Navier-Stokes equations do not admit an invariant region, we work in the finite-energy setting, where a detailed understanding of the high density regime is crucial.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for compressible viscoelastic equations in the half space. When the initial deformation gradient does not degenerate and there is no vacuum initially, we establish the uniform regularity estimates of solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for the three-dimensional compressible viscoelastic equations in the Sobolev spaces. Then we justify the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions of the compressible viscoelastic equations based on the uniform regularity estimates and the compactness arguments. Both the no-slip boundary condition and the Navier-slip type boundary condition on velocity are addressed in this paper. On the one hand, for the corresponding vanishing viscosity limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the no-slip boundary condition, it is impossible to derive such uniform energy estimates of solutions due to the appearance of strong boundary layers. Consequently, our results show that the deformation gradient can prevent the formation of strong boundary layers. On the other hand, these results also provide two different kinds of suitable boundary conditions for the well-posedness of the initial-boundary value problem of the elastodynamic equations via the vanishing viscosity limit method. Finally, it is worth noting that we take advantage of the Lagrangian coordinates to study the vanishing viscosity limit for the fixed boundary problem in this paper.

Abstract:We study the vanishing viscosity limit for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in terms of the relative vorticity in the setting of axisymmetric velocity fields without swirl. We show that the weak convergence of relative vorticity to a renormalized solution of the Euler equations, established by Nobili and Seis, can be upgraded to strong convergence.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for the 3D nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition. We establish the local well-posedness of the strong solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing viscosity limit process is established and a strong rate of convergence is obtained as the boundary of the domain is flat. In addition, it is needed to add some additional condition for density to match well the boundary condition.
