Abstract:We investigate properties of measures in infinite dimensional spaces in terms of Poincaré inequalities. A Poincaré inequality states that the $L^2$ variance of an admissible function is controlled by the homogeneous $H^1$ norm. In the case of Loop spaces, it was observed by L. Gross that the homogeneous $H^1$ norm alone may not control the $L^2$ norm and a potential term involving the end value of the Brownian bridge is introduced. Aida, on the other hand, introduced a weight on the Dirichlet form. We show that Aida's modified Logarithmic Sobolev inequality implies weak Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities with precise estimates on the order of convergence. The order of convergence in the weak Sobolev inequalities are related to weak $L^1$ estimates on the weight function. This and a relation between Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities lead to a Poincaré inequality on the loop space over certain manifolds.

Abstract:We study loops which are universal (that is, isotopically invariant) with respect to the property of flexibility ($xy\cdot x = x\cdot yx$). We also weaken this to semi-universality, that is, loops in which every left and right isotope is flexible, but not necessarily every isotope. One of our main results is that universally flexible, inverse property loops are Moufang loops. On the other hand, semi-universally flexible, inverse property loops are diassociative. We also examine the relationship between universally flexible loops and middle Bol loops. The paper concludes with some open problems.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by a possibly infinite family of proper functions (not necessarily lower semicontinuous), we introduce some new notions of constraint qualifications in terms of the epigraphs of the conjugates of these functions. Under the new constraint qualifications, we obtain characterizations of those reverse-convex inequalities which are a consequence of the constrained system, and we provide necessary and/or sufficient conditions for a stable Farkas lemma to hold. Similarly, we provide characterizations for constrained minimization problems to have the strong or strong stable Lagrangian dualities. Several known results in the conic programming problem are extended and improved.

Abstract:In this short note we discuss upper bounds for the critical values of homology classes in the based and free loop space of compact manifolds carrying a Riemannian or Finsler metric of positive Ricci curvature. In particular it follows that a shortest closed geodesic on a compact and simply-connected n -dimensional manifold of positive Ricci curvature has length This improves the bound given by Rotman (Positive Ricci curvature and the length of a shortest periodic geodesic. arXiv:2203.09492, 2022).

Abstract:Abstract We show that a torsion-free nilpotent loop (that is, a loop nilpotent with respect to the dimension filtration) has a torsion-free nilpotent left multiplication group of, at most, the same class. We also prove that a free loop is residually torsion-free nilpotent and that the same holds for any free commutative loop. Although this last result is much stronger than the usual residual nilpotence of the free loop proved by Higman, it is established, essentially, by the same method.

Abstract:We review recent developments in size separation in vibrated granular materials. Motivated by a need in industry to efficiently handle granular materials and a desire to make fundamental advances in non-equilibrium physics, experimental and theoretical investigations have shown size separation to be a complex phenomena. Large particles in a vibrated granular system invariably rise to the top. However, they may also sink to the bottom, or show other patterns depending on subtle variations in physical conditions. While size ratio is a dominant factor, particle specific properties such as density, inelasticity and friction can play an important role. The nature of the energy input, boundary conditions and interstitial air have been also shown to be significant factors in determining spatial distributions. The presence of convection can enhance mixing or lead to size separation. Experimental techniques including direct visualization and magnetic resonance imaging are being used to investigate these properties. Molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation techniques have been developed to probe size separation. Analytical methods such as kinetic theory are being used to study the interplay between particle size and density in the vibro-fluidized regime, and geometric models have been proposed to describe size separation for deep beds. Besides discussing these studies, we will also review the impact of inelastic collision and friction on the density and velocity distributions to gain a deeper appreciation of the non-equilibrium nature of the system. While a substantial number of studies have been accomplished, considerable work is still required to achieve a firm description of the phenomena.

Abstract:We construct a connected finite loop space of rank 66 and dimension 1254 whose rational cohomology is not isomorphic as a graded vector space to the rational cohomology of any compact Lie group, hence providing a counterexample to a classical conjecture. Aided by machine calculation we verify that our counterexample is minimal, i.e., that any finite loop space of rank less than 66 is in fact rationally equivalent to a compact Lie group, extending the classical known bound of 5.

Abstract:We formulate and prove an index theorem for loop spaces of compact manifolds in the framework of KK -theory. It is a strong candidate for the noncommutative geometrical definition (or the analytic counterpart) of the Witten genus. In order to specify an "appropriate form" of the index theorem to formulate a loop space version, we formulate and prove an equivariant index theorem for non-compact S1 -manifolds with a compact fixed-point set. In order to formulate it, we use a ring of formal power series.

Abstract:We define an abelian loop on a set $S$ consisting of 1 and all odd prime numbers with an operation $\bullet$, where for $a,b$ $\in$ $S$, $a$ $ \bullet$ $b$ is the smallest element of $S$ strictly larger than $|a-b|$. We use theorems and conjectures from number theory to prove properties of the loop and state analogous conjectures about the loop.

Limits of Convex Projective Surfaces and Finsler Metrics

Abstract:We show that for certain sequences escaping to infinity in the $\operatorname{SL}_3\mathbb{R}$ Hitchin component, growth rates of trace functions are described by natural Finsler metrics. More specifically, as the Labourie-Loftin cubic differential gets big, logarithms of trace functions are approximated by lengths in a Finsler metric which has triangular unit balls and is defined directly in terms of the cubic differential. This is equivalent to a conjecture of Loftin from 2006 which has recently been proven by Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf, though phrasing the result in terms of Finsler metrics is new and leads to stronger results with simpler proofs. From our perspective, the result is a corollary of a more local theorem which may have other applications. The key ingredient of the proof is another asymmetric Finsler metric, defined on any convex projective surface, recently defined by Danciger and Stecker, in which lengths of loops are logarithms of eigenvalues. We imitate work of Nie to show that, as the cubic differential gets big, Danciger and Stecker's metric converges to our Finsler metric with triangular unit balls. While Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf address cubic differential rays, our methods also address sequences of representations which are asymptotic to cubic differential rays, giving us more insight into natural compactifications of the moduli space of convex projective surfaces.

Abstract:In his Inventiones paper, Ziller (Invent. Math: 1-22, 1977) computed the integral homology as a graded abelian group of the free loop space of compact, globally symmetric spaces of rank 1. Chas and Sullivan (String Topology, 1999)showed that the homology of the free loop space of a compact closed orientable manifold can be equipped with a loop product and a BV-operator making it a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) developed a spectral sequence which converges to the loop homology as a spectral sequence of algebras. They computed the algebra structure of the loop homology of spheres and complex projective spaces by using Ziller's results and the method of Brown-Shih (Ann. of Math. 69:223-246, 1959, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 3: 93-176, 1962). In this note we compute the loop homology algebra by using only spectral sequences and the technique of universal examples. We therefore not only obtain Zillers' and Brown-Shihs' results in an elementary way, we also replace the roundabout computations of Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) making them independent of Ziller's and Brown-Shihs' work. Moreover we offer an elementary technique which we expect can easily be generalized and applied to a wider family of spaces, not only the globally symmetric ones.

Strong almost finiteness

Abstract:A countable, bounded degree graph is almost finite if it has a tiling with isomorphic copies of finitely many Følner sets, and we call it strongly almost finite, if the tiling can be randomized so that the probability that a vertex is on the boundary of a tile is uniformly small. We give various equivalents for strong almost finiteness. In particular, we prove that Property A together with the Følner property is equivalent to strong almost finiteness. Using these characterizations, we show that graphs of subexponential growth and Schreier graphs of amenable groups are always strongly almost finite, generalizing the celebrated result of Downarowicz, Huczek and Zhang about amenable Cayley graphs, based on graph theoretic rather than group theoretic principles. We give various equivalents to Property A for graphs, and show that if a sequence of graphs of Property A (in a uniform sense) converges to a graph $G$ in the neighborhood distance (a purely combinatorial analogue of the classical Benjamini-Schramm distance), then their Laplacian spectra converge to the Laplacian spectrum of $G$ in the Hausdorff distance. We apply the previous theory to construct a new and rich class of classifiable $C^{\star}$-algebras. Namely, we show that for any minimal strong almost finite graph $G$ there are naturally associated simple, nuclear, stably finite $C^{\star}$-algebras that are classifiable by their Elliott invariants.

Abstract:As the first step of proving the Hodge-FVH correspondence recently proposed in [17], we derive the Virasoro constraints and the Dubrovin-Zhang loop equation for special cubic Hodge integrals. We show that this loop equation has a unique solution, and provide a new algorithm for the computation of these Hodge integrals. We also prove the existence of gap phenomenon for the special cubic Hodge free energies.

Abstract:We explore the applications of Lorentzian polynomials to the fields of algebraic geometry, analytic geometry and convex geometry. In particular, we establish a series of intersection theoretic inequalities, which we call rKT property, with respect to $m$-positive classes and Schur classes. We also study its convexity variants -- the geometric inequalities for $m$-convex functions on the sphere and convex bodies. Along the exploration, we prove that any finite subset on the closure of the cone generated by $m$-positive classes can be endowed with a polymatroid structure by a canonical numerical-dimension type function, extending our previous result for nef classes; and we prove Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for valuations of Schur type. We also establish various analogs of sumset estimates (Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequalities) from additive combinatorics in our contexts.

Abstract:Loop is a powerful program construct in classical computation, but its power is still not exploited fully in quantum computation. The exploitation of such power definitely requires a deep understanding of the mechanism of quantum loop programs. In this paper, we introduce a general scheme of quantum loops and describe its computational process. The function computed by a quantum loop is defined, and a denotational semantics and a weakest precondition semantics of a quantum loop are given. The notions of termination and almost termination are proposed for quantum loops. This paper only consider the case of finite-dimensional state spaces. Necessary and sufficient conditions for termination and almost termination of a general quantum loop on any mixed input state are presented. A quantum loop is said to be (almost) terminating if it (almost) terminates on any input state. We show that a quantum loop is almost terminating if and only if it is uniformly almost terminating. It is observed that a small disturbance either on the unitary transformation in the loop body or on the measurement in the loop guard can make any quantum loop (almost) terminating, provided that some dimension restriction is satisfied. Moreover, a representation of the function computed by a quantum loop is given in terms of finite summations of matrices. To illustrate the notions and results obtained in this paper, two simple classes of quantum loop programs, one qubit quantum loops, and two qubit quantum loops defined by controlled gates, are carefully examined, and to show their expressive power, quantum loops are applied in describing quantum walks.

Let $\nu_e$ be the pinned Brownian motion measure on $L_e(G)$ and let $\alpha\in L^2(\wedge^1T^{\ast}L_e(G),\nu_e)\cap {\mathbb D}^{\infty,p}(\wedge^1T^{\ast}L_e(G),\nu_e)$ $(1<p<2)$ be a closed 1-form on $L_e(G)$. Using results in rough path analysis, we prove that there exists a measurable function $f$ on $L_e(G)$ such that $df=\alpha$.
