Abstract:By using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the $\text{Rh}\text{ }{L}_{2,3}$, $\text{Co}\text{ }{L}_{2,3}$, and $\text{Fe}\text{ }{L}_{2,3}$ edges, we find a valence state of ${\text{Co}}^{2+}/{\text{Rh}}^{4+}$ in ${\text{Ca}}_{3}{\text{CoRhO}}_{6}$ and of ${\text{Fe}}^{3+}/{\text{Rh}}^{3+}$ in ${\text{Ca}}_{3}{\text{FeRhO}}_{6}$. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the $\text{Co}\text{ }{L}_{2,3}$ edge of ${\text{Ca}}_{3}{\text{CoRhO}}_{6}$ reveals a giant orbital moment of about $1.7{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}$, which can be attributed to the occupation of the minority-spin ${d}_{0}{d}_{2}$ orbital state of the high-spin ${\text{Co}}^{2+}$ $(3{d}^{7})$ ions in trigonal prismatic coordination. This active role of the spin-orbit coupling explains the strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Ising-type magnetism of ${\text{Ca}}_{3}{\text{CoRhO}}_{6}$.

Abstract:We have performed non-resonant x-ray diffraction, resonant soft and hard x-ray magnetic diffraction, soft x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements to clarify the electronic and magnetic states of the Co3+ ions in GdBaCo2O5.5. Our data are consistent with a 3+ Py Co HS state at the pyramidal sites and a 3+ Oc Co LS state at the octahedral sites. The structural distortion, with a doubling of the a axis (2ap x 2ap x 2ap cell), shows alternating elongations and contractions of the pyramids and indicates that the metal-insulator transition is associated with orbital order in the t2g orbitals of the 3+ Py Co HS state. This distortion corresponds to an alternating ordering of xz and yz orbitals along the a and c axes for the 3+ Py Co . The orbital ordering and pyramidal distortion lead to deformation of the octahedra, but the 3+ Oc Co LS state does not allow an orbital order to occur for the 3+ Oc Co ions. The soft x-ray magnetic diffraction results indicate that the magnetic moments are aligned in the ab plane but are not parallel to the crystallographic a or b axes. The orbital order and the doubling of the magnetic unit cell along the c axis support a non-collinear magnetic structure. The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism data indicate that there is a large orbital magnetic contribution to the total ordered Co moment.

Abstract:We find using local spin density approximation + Hubbard U band structure calculations that the novel one-dimensional cobaltate Ca3Co2O6 is not a ferromagnetic half-metal but a Mott insulator. Both the octahedral and the trigonal Co ions are formally trivalent, with the octahedral being in the low-spin and the trigonal in the high-spin state. The inclusion of the spin-orbit coupling leads to the occupation of the minority-spin d2 orbital for the unusually coordinated trigonal Co, producing a giant orbital moment (1.57 microB). It also results in an anomalously large magnetocrystalline anisotropy (of order 70 meV), elucidating why the magnetism is highly Ising-like. The role of the oxygen holes, carrying an induced magnetic moment of 0.13 microB per oxygen, for the exchange interactions is discussed.
Spin-state transition of Co ion (S= 2 →S= 5/2) in hole substituted 1D chain of Ca3Co2O6

Abstract:We have discovered spin-state transition (S= 2 toS= 5/2) of Co ions due to Mg substitution in the Ca3Co2O6apparent in the magnetic susceptibility, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and first-principles study. We also examine the effect of Mg substitution on the magnetic and electronic structure of Ca3Co2O6by first-principles calculations. It involves generalized gradient approximation with Coulomb interaction (U) in exchange-correlation energy functional. Our study shows a reasonable agreement between effective magnetic moment (μeff) determined from the Curie-Weiss fit with that from the XPS analysis and first-principles calculations study. We have attributed the decrease in positive intra-chain exchange interaction constant (J1/kB) to the antiferromagnetically coupled induced Co4+ions (S= 5/2) arising from the Mg2+ions substitution. The in-field metamagnetic transitions in the isothermalM(H) curves below the critical field (Hc) have been accurately mapped and successfully explained by the change in magnetic entropy (ΔS) calculations and Arrott plots. Electronic structure study reveals hole-type doping of Mg atom, and the Fermi level (EF) shifts below. Density of state and band structure calculation indicates strong hybridization between partial states of Co-3d and O-2p orbitals for the Mg-doped compound due to which the band crossing at Fermi level is observed, and a hole-type Fermi surface is formed.

Abstract:Using soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co L(2,3) and O K edges, we demonstrate that the Co3+ ions with the CoO5 pyramidal coordination in the layered Sr2CoO3Cl compound are unambiguously in the high spin state. Our result questions the reliability of the spin state assignments made so far for the recently synthesized layered cobalt perovskites and calls for a reexamination of the modeling for the complex and fascinating properties of these new materials.

Abstract:We have studied the local electronic structure of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 using soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co-L-3,L-2 and Mn-L-3,L-2 edges. We found a high-spin Co2+-Mn4+ valence state for samples with the optimal Curie temperature. We discovered that samples with lower Curie temperatures contain low-spin nonmagnetic Co3+ ions. Using soft-x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we established that the Co2+ and Mn4+ ions are ferromagnetically aligned. We also revealed that the Co2+ ions have a large orbital moment: morb/mspin approximate to 0.47. Together with model calculations, this suggests the presence of a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the material and predicts a nontrivial temperature dependence for the magnetic susceptibility.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples LaBa2Cu3−xCo x O y (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) were synthesized by solid state reaction method. The structure, phonon vibration, conduction, and spin correlation were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra, resistivity, and electron spin resonance. It is found that there are orthorhombic–tetragonal and tetragonal–orthorhombic structural transitions with Co doping, and the conduction behavior changes from metallic to semiconducting. With the increase of Co content, the Cu(1)—O(1) phonon mode around 531 cm−1 softens, the Cu(2)—O(2) phonon mode around 657 cm−1 hardens, and the Cu(1)—O(4) mode around 583 cm−1 is nearly unchanged. The Cu2+ spins tend to localize with Co doping. The changes in structure, phonon vibration, and spin correlation with Co doping are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Epitaxial thin films of undoped LaCoO$_{3}$\@, of electron-doped La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$\@, and of hole-doped La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$\@ exhibit ferromagnetic order with a transition temperature $T_{\rm{C}}$ $\approx$ 85 K, 22 K, and 240 K, respectively. The spin-state structure for these compounds was studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co $L_{2,3}$ and O $K$ edges. It turns out that a higher spin state of the Co$^{3+}$ ions is responsible for the magnetism in LaCoO$_{3}$\@ while for La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ the Co$^{3+}$ ions are in a low-spin state and the ferromagnetism is predominantly determined by Co$^{2+}$\@. For La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$\@, on the other hand, the magnetism originates from higher spin states of Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$\@. Moreover, a strong magnetic anisotropy is observed for all systems.
Effect of Co doping at the B-site on the structure and tranport properties in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3

Abstract:Summary form only given. Polycrystalline samples La2/3Caι/3(Mnι_xCox)θ3 with x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 were synthesized by standard solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction results show that they are of single phase for the specimens with x<;0.3. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction data shows Mn-O-Mn angle decreases from 178.8° for x=0.1 to 128.8° for x=0.3. A metal-to-insulator transition was only observed in sample with x=0.1. The different transport properties of these samples were attributed to the different Jahn-Teller distortion. The temperature dependence of reisitivity at low and high temperature can be described by the small polaron model and Kondo-like effect. In the present work, effect of Co doping at B-site of La2/3Caι/3Mnθ3 (LCMO) is discussed. The spin configuration of Co is very complex. The Co ions are in their low-spin (LS) tg6e2g0 (S=0) state at the low temperature (T<;35 K) and high-spin (HS) tg4e2g2 (S=2) state at high temperature (300 K<;T<;600 K). There maybe a intermediate-spin (IS) tg5e2gl (S=l) state or a mixture of HS and LS of Co3+ in the interval 35 K<;T<;100 K. The structure and properties are close dependent on the Co dopant as discussed below. Polycrystalline samples La,/3Ca2/3(Mnι_xCox)θ3 (LCMCO) with x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 were synthesized by standard solid-state reaction. The analytical purity materials La203, CaC03, Mn02 and Co203 were well mixed in stoichiometric proportions and pestle for 30 minutes before calcined at 1000 °C for 6 hours. The calcined powder was pressed into slices and then sintered at 1400°C for 32 hours in air. All the specimens were slowly-cooled to room temperature in air for about 15 hours. The structure of the samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), which was performed at a Rigaku Dmax-γB diffractometer at room temperature with step scanning model. The struct- ral parameters were obtained from a standard Rietveld program GSAS. The resistivity with/without magnetic field were measured by the standard four-probe method at a Quantum Design PPMS. Measurements of x-ray diffraction at room temperature show that samples within x<;0.3 are of single phase which can be well refined in orthorhombic symmetry with the space group of Prima (Rwp<;15%). The lattice parameters of a, b, and c are almost independent of the Co dopant which indicates the unit cell is unchanged after Co was doped in LCMO. The bond angle of Mn-Ol-Mn decreases largely from 178.8° for x=0.1 to 128.8° for x=0.3. It will induce the large change of electric transport properties as discussed below.
Magnetic dichroism study on Mn$_{1.8}$Co$_{1.2}$Ga thin film using a combination of X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy

Abstract:Using circularly polarised radiation and a combination of bulk-sensitive hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray-absorption spectroscopy (XAS) we studied the electronic and magnetic structure of epitaxial Mn$_{1.8}$Co$_{1.2}$Ga thin films. Spin resolved Bloch spectral functions, density of states as well as charge and magnetisation densities were investigated by a first-principles analysis of full potential, fully relativistic Korringa--Kohn--Rostoker calculations of the electronic structure. The valence states were experimentally investigated by using linear dichroism in the angular distribution and comparing the results to spin-resolved densities of states. The linear dichroism in the valence band enabled a symmetry analysis of the contributing states. The spectra were in good agreement with the theoretical partial density of states. The element-specific, spin-resolved, unoccupied densities of states for Co and Mn were analysed by using XAS and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the $L_{3,2}$ edges. The spectra were influenced by strong correlation effects. XMCD was used to extract the site resolved magnetic moments. The experimental values of $m_{\rm Mn}=0.7\:\mu_B$ and $m_{\rm Co}=1.05\:\mu_B$ agree very well with the calculated magnetic moments. Magnetic circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy at the Mn and Co $2p$ core level exhibited a pronounced magnetic dichroism and confirmed the localised character of the Mn $d$ valence states.

Abstract:The valence and spin state evolution of Mn and Co on TbMn$_{\rm 1-x}$Co$_{\rm x}$O$_3$ series is precisely determined by means of soft and hard x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and K$\beta$ x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). Our results show the change from Mn$^{3+}$ to Mn$^{4+}$ both high-spin (HS) together with the evolution from Co$^{2+}$ HS to Co$^{3+}$ low-spin (LS) with increasing $\rm x$. In addition, high energy resolution XAS spectra on the K pre-edge region are interpreted in terms of the strong charge transfer and hybridization effects along the series. These results correlate well with the spin values of Mn and Co atoms obtained from the K$\beta$ XES data. From this study, we determine that Co enters into the transition metal sublattice of TbMnO$_3$ as a divalent ion in HS state, destabilizing the Mn long range magnetic order since very low doping compositions (${\rm x} \le 0.1$). Samples in the intermediate composition range ($0.4 \le {\rm x} \le 0.6$) adopt the crystal structure of a double perovskite with long range ferromagnetic ordering which is due to Mn$^{4+}$-O-Co$^{2+}$ superexchange interactions with both cations in HS configuration. Ferromagnetism vanishes for ${\rm x} \ge 0.7$ due to the structural disorder that collapses the double perovskite structure. The spectroscopic techniques reveal the occurrence of Mn$^{4+}$ HS and a fluctuating valence state Co$^{2+}$ HS/Co$^{3+}$ LS in this composition range. Disorder and competitive interactions lead to a magnetic glassy behaviour in these samples.
X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) at the O K-Edge of Bulk Co3O4: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Abstract:We combine theoretical and experimental X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) to probe the local environment around cationic sites of bulk spinel cobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4). Specifically, we analyse the oxygen K-edge spectrum. We find an excellent agreement between our calculated spectra based on the density functional theory and the projector augmented wave method, previous calculations as well as with the experiment. The oxygen K-edge spectrum shows a strong pre-edge peak which can be ascribed to dipole transitions from O 1s to O 2p states hybridized with the unoccupied 3d states of cobalt atoms. Also, since Co3O4 contains two types of Co atoms, i.e., Co3+ and Co2+, we find that contribution of Co2+ ions to the pre-edge peak is solely due to single spin-polarized t2g orbitals (dxz, dyz, and dxy) while that of Co3+ ions is due to spin-up and spin-down polarized eg orbitals (dx2−y2 and dz2). Furthermore, we deduce the magnetic moments on the Co3+ and Co2+ to be zero and 3.00 μB respectively. This is consistent with an earlier experimental study which found that the magnetic structure of Co3O4 consists of antiferromagnetically ordered Co2+ spins, each of which is surrounded by four nearest neighbours of oppositely directed spins.

Jumps in entropy and magnetic susceptibility at the valence and spin-state transition in a cobalt oxide

Abstract:A wide family of cobalt oxides of formulation (Pr,Ln,Ca)CoO3 (Ln being a lanthanide) exhibits a coupled valence and spin-state transition (VSST) at a temperature T*, which involves two concomitant modifications: (i) a change in the spin state of Co3+ from low-spin (T < T*) to a higher spin-state (T > T*), and (ii) a change in the valence state of Pr, from a mixed Pr4+/Pr3+ state (T < T*) to a purely trivalent state (T > T*), accompanied by an equivalent charge transfer within the Co3+/Co4+ subsystem. In the present paper, the VSST taking place in (Pr0.7Sm0.3)0.7Ca0.3CoO3 at T* = about 90 K is investigated by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. First, we quantitatively characterized the jumps in magnetic susceptibility (khi) and entropy (S) around T*. Then, these values were compared to those calculated as a function of the variations in the population of the different cationic species involved in the VSST. X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments recently showed that the higher spin state above T* should be regarded as an inhomogeneous mixture between low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states. In the frame of this description, we demonstrate that the jumps in both khi and S can be associated to the same change in the Co3+ HS content around T*. This result lends further support to the relevance of the LS/HS picture for the VSST, challenging the currently dominant interpretation based on the occurrence of an intermediate-spin (IS) state of Co3+ above T*.

NQR and X-ray investigation of the structure of Na$_{2/3}$CoO$_{2}$ compound

Abstract:We have synthesized various samples of the $x=2/3$ phase of sodium cobaltate Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ and performed X-ray powder diffractions spectra to compare the diffraction with the structure proposed previously from NMR/NQR experiments [H. Alloul \emph{et al.}, EPL \textbf{85}, 47006 (2009)]. Rietveld analysis of the data are found in perfect agreement with those, and confirm the concentration x=2/3 obtained in the synthesis procedure. They even give indications on the atomic displacements of Na inside the unit cell. The detailed NQR data allow us to identify the NQR transitions and electric field gradient (EFG) parameters for 4 cobalt sites and 3 Na sites. The spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates are found much smaller for the non-magnetic Co$^{3+}$ sites than for the magnetic sites on which the holes are delocalized. The atomic ordering of the Na layers is therefore at the source of this ordered distribution of cobalt charges. The method used here to resolve the Na ordering and the subsequent Co charge order can be used valuably for other concentrations of Na.

Abstract:The spin states and electronic structure of layered perovskite La1.5Ca0.5CoO4 are investigated using fullpotential linearized augmented plane-wave method. All the computational results indicate that the Co2+ ion is in a high-spin state and the Co3+ in a low-spin state. The Co2+ t2g orbitals with a small crystal-field splitting are mixed by spin-orbit coupling, which accounts for the observed easy in-plane magnetism. The nonmagnetic LS-Co3+ state, which is stabilized by a strong crystal field, provides a natural explanation for the observed low magnetic ordering temperature and a spin-blockade phenomenon of the electron hopping. Furthermore, we find that the intermediate-spin state of Co3+ has a large multiplet splitting. But the lowest-lying IS state of Co3+ is still higher in energy than the LS ground state by a few hundred millielectron volts and the HS state of Co3+ is even less stable, both in sharp contrast to a recent experimental study which suggested the HS+IS mixed Co3+ ground state. We note that either the IS-Co3+ or HS-Co3+ states or their mixture would produce a wrong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and a much higher magneticordering temperature than observed. Thus, the present work sheds light on this material concerning its electronic and magnetic structure, and it would stimulate different experiments to settle this intriguing spin-state issue.

Abstract:$^{59}$Co NMR spectra in oriented powders of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$ and in its hydrated superconducting phase (HSC) Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$,1.3H$_{2}$O reveal a single electronic Co state with identical $T$ independent NMR shift tensor. These phases differ markedly from Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_{2}$, in which we resolve 3 types of Co sites. The large T variation of their spin susceptibilities $\chi ^{s}$ and the anisotropy of the orbital susceptibility $\chi ^{orb}$ allow us to conclude that charge disproportionation occurs, in a non magnetic Co$^{3+}$ and two magnetic sites with about 0.3 and 0.7 holes in the $t_{2g}$ multiplet. The data are consistent with those for the single Co site in the anhydrous and HSC phase assuming the expected Co$^{3.65+}$ charge.
Electronic State of Na_xCoO_2 Based on the Two Dimensional Triangular Lattice d-p Model

Abstract:The electronic state in a CoO_2 plane of the layered cobalt oxides Na_{x}CoO_2 is investigated by using the 11 band d-p model on a two-dimensional triangular lattice, where the tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit the LDA band structure. Effects of the Coulomb interaction at a Co site: the intra- and inter-orbital direct terms U and U', the exchange coupling J and the pair-transfer J', are treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We also consider the effect of the Na order at x=0.5, where Na ions form one dimensional chains, by taking into account of an effective one-dimensional potential Delta epsilon_{d} on the CoO_2 plane. It is found that the Na order enhances the Fermi surface nesting resulting in the antiferromagnetism (AFM) which is suppressed due to the frustration effect in the case without the Na order. When U and Delta epsilon_{d} are varied, we observe three types of the AFM: (1) the metallic AFM with large density of states N_F at the Fermi level for small values of U and Delta epsilon_{d}, (2) the semimetallic AFM with tiny N_F for large U with small Delta epsilon_{d} and (3) the insulating AFM with a finite energy gap for large values of U and Delta epsilon_{d}.

Abstract:The polycrystalline samples of La 2/3 Ca 1/3 Mn 1-x Co x O 3 ( LCMCO ) ( x ≤ 0.20) with single phase are synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinements proved that Co replaces Mn in LCMCO. The lattice parameters decrease monotonically with increasing Co content, while the bond angles of Mn-O-Mn increases from 160.4° ( x = 0.02) to 170.2° ( x = 0.20). The metal-to-insulator transition temperature decreases with increasing Co content. The scattering of coupling between eg electrons and the surface phonons, which is indicated by T p, decreases with the increase of Co content. Magne-toresistance at T MI decreases with increasing the Co content from 297.4% to 81.4%, but increases at T p from 23.8% to 121.2%, respectively.
