Abstract:A connection between fractal dimensions of "turbulent facets" and fractal dimensions in diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) is shown. The theoretical correspondence is elucidated and an empirical support to the above claim is given.

Abstract:This paper makes an attempt to develop a fractal derivative model of anomalous diffusion. We also derive the fundamental solution of the fractal derivative equation for anomalous diffusion, which characterizes a clear power law. This new model is compared with the corresponding fractional derivative model in terms of computational efficiency, diffusion velocity, and heavy tail property. The merits and distinctions of these two models of anomalous diffusion are then summarized.

Abstract:Models of fractal growth commonly consider particles diffusing in a medium and that stick irreversibly to the forming aggregate when making contact for the first time. As shown by the well-known diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) model and its generalisations, the fractal dimension is sensitive to the nature of the stochastic motion of the particles. Here, we study the structures formed by finite-lived Brownian particles, i.e., particles constrained to find the aggregate within a prescribed time, and which are removed otherwise. This motion can be modelled by diffusion with stochastic resetting, a class of processes which has been widely studied in recent years. In the short lifetime limit, a very small fraction of the particles manage to reach the aggregate. Hence, growth is controlled by atypical Brownian trajectories, that move nearly in straight line according to a large deviation principle. In $d$ dimensions, the resulting fractal dimension of the aggregate decreases from the DLA value and tends to 1, instead of increasing to $d$ as expected from ballistic aggregation. In the zero lifetime limit one recovers the non-trivial model of "aggregation by the tips" proposed long ago by R. Jullien [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 19, 2129 (1986)].

Fractal Aggregation under Rotation

Abstract:By means of the Monte Carlo simulation, a fractal growth model is introduced to describe diffusion-limited-aggregation (DLA) under rotation. Patterns which are different from the classical DLA model are observed and the fractal dimension of such clusters is calculated. It is found that the pattern of the clusters and their fractal dimension depend strongly on the rotation velocity of the diffusing particle. Our results indicate the transition from fractal to non-fractal behavior of growing cluster with increasing rotation velocity, i.e. for small enough angular velocity omega the fractal dimension decreases with increasing w, but then, with increasing rotation velocity the fractal dimension increasing and the cluster becomes compact and tends to non-fractal.

Abstract:We introduce a lattice gas model of cluster growth via the diffusive aggregation of particles in a closed system obeying a local, deterministic, microscopically reversible dynamics. This model roughly corresponds to placing the irreversible Diffusion Limited Aggregation model (DLA) in contact with a heat bath. Particles release latent heat when aggregating, while singly connected cluster members can absorb heat and evaporate. The heat bath is initially empty, hence we observe the flow of entropy from the aggregating gas of particles into the heat bath, which is being populated by diffusing heat tokens. Before the population of the heat bath stabilizes, the cluster morphology (quantified by the fractal dimension) is similar to a standard DLA cluster. The cluster then gradually anneals, becoming more tenuous, until reaching configurational equilibrium when the cluster morphology resembles a quenched branched random polymer. As the microscopic dynamics is invertible, we can reverse the evolution, observe the inverse flow of heat and entropy, and recover the initial condition. This simple system provides an explicit example of how macroscopic dissipation and self-organization can result from an underlying microscopically reversible dynamics.

The spectral dimension of aggregates of tunable fractal dimension

Abstract:The dynamic properties of fractal aggregates with tunable fractal dimension are studied. The fractal dimensions are investigated in the range 1.0<or=D<or=2.5. The interactions are represented by the Born scalar model and two kinds of rule describing links between particles are used. The spectral dimension is determined by computing the integrated density of states (IDOS), using the very fast spectral moments method. Comparisons with a direct diagonalization prove the efficiency of this method. Furthermore, we give a Brownian diffusion approach, which agrees with the moments method, for D lower than two. It is found that the spectral dimension strongly depends on the fractal dimension and, for fractal dimension larger than two, it varies with the degree of connectivity taken into account in the model.

Abstract:We report experimental measurements of the Lagrangian multifractal dimension spectrum in an intensely turbulent laboratory water flow by the optical tracking of tracer particles. The Legendre transform of the measured spectrum is compared with measurements of the scaling exponents of the Lagrangian velocity structure functions, and excellent agreement between the two measurements is found, in support of the multifractal picture of turbulence. These measurements are compared with three model dimension spectra. When the nonexistence of structure functions of order less than -1 is accounted for, the models are shown to agree well with the measured spectrum.

In addition, the effect of internal interaction in multi-center growth have been taken into consideration. Fractal growth morphology shows strong boundary and interaction effects.
The Fractality of the Hydrodynamic Modes of Diffusion

Abstract:Transport by normal diffusion can be decomposed into the so-called hydrodynamic modes which relax exponentially toward the equilibrium state. In chaotic systems with two degrees of freedom, the fine scale structure of these hydrodynamic modes is singular and fractal. We characterize them by their Hausdorff dimension which is given in terms of Ruelle's topological pressure. For long-wavelength modes, we derive a striking relation between the Hausdorff dimension, the diffusion coefficient, and the positive Lyapunov exponent of the system. This relation is tested numerically on two chaotic systems exhibiting diffusion, both periodic Lorentz gases, one with hard repulsive forces, the other with attractive, Yukawa forces. The agreement of the data with the theory is excellent.

Abstract:The disturbing of ultrafine particles on carrying phase is usually ignored in studies on dilute ultrafine particle systems. In a dense fractal-like agglomerate system, however, the effect of particle phase on carrier phase should be considered due to its unique heat and mass transfer while the corresponding mathematical model for this problem has not been established. By taking the agglomerate-laden suspension as a single pseudo fluid, we propose a two-way coupling model in which the developed governing equations for suspension and particle general dynamic equation (PGDE) for particle coagulation and breakage due to turbulence are simultaneously solved. The Taylor-expansion moment method has been applied to solve fractal-like aggregate process and dilute gas-to-particle conversion, and in this study it is further extended to close the PGDE equation by invoking fractal theory. The newly coupling model is not limited in dilute particle system, and thus it is expected to play important roles in studying dense fractal-like agglomerate synthesis or other particulate industrial applications.
On the fractal dimension of non-Newtonian Hele-Shaw flow subject to Saffman-Taylor instability

Abstract:We introduce a discrete numerical method based on the diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) approach to simulate two-fluid Hele-Shaw flow subject to the Saffman-Taylor interfacial instability, in the case where the displaced fluid is non-Newtonian. Focusing on fluids for which the most relevant non-Newtonian aspect of the thin-gap flow is shear-thinning, we introduce a history-dependent aspect into the algorithm, modeling shear-rate-dependent fluid viscosity. The main finding is that the morphology of the emerging patterns, characterized by the fractal dimension, is modified in a nontrivial manner by the shear-thinning nature of the displaced fluid. In particular, we consistently find that shear-thinning leads to the formation of patterns characterized by a smaller fractal dimension, compared to the corresponding Newtonian fluid.

Turbulent flows are not uniformly multifractal

Abstract:The Frisch-Parisi multifractal formalism remains the most compelling rationalisation for anomalous scaling in fully developed turbulence. We now show that this formalism can be adapted locally to reveal the spatial distribution of generalized dimensions and of how multifractal the energy dissipation field is. In particular, we show that most regions of the flow are close to being mono-fractal and these are interspersed with islands of multifractality corresponding to the most singular structures in the flow. By defining a suitable measure $\Phi ({\bf x})$ of the spatial variation of multifractality, we show that this grows logarithmically with the extent to which the energy dissipation varies locally around ${\bf x}$. These results suggest ways to understand how singularities could arise in disparate regions of a flow and provides new directions in understanding anomalous dissipation and intermittency. We then employ the same technique to a non-intermittent, model turbulent flow to check the robustness of our conclusions.

Fractal Simulation of Thin Film Nucleation Growth Process Using a Diffusion-Limited Aggregation Model

Abstract:In order to study the initial nucleation and growth process of the films, a two-dimensional (2D) DLA model was established, and fractal dimension was calculated by sandbox method. Compared with the experimental results, the model can well characterize the morphology of nucleation and growth in the initial stage of film growth. In addition to the number of particles and deposition probability involved in other studies, the size of substrate and the location of central particles are also considered in this work. The growth morphology, fractal dimension and the number of simulated steps are presented in this paper.

Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics

Abstract:The deterministic motions of clouds and turbulence, despite their chaotic nature, have nonetheless been shown to follow simple statistical power-law scalings: a fractal dimension D relates individual cloud perimeters p to a measurement resolution, and turbulent fluctuations scale with the air parcel separation distance through the Hurst exponent, H . However, it remains uncertain whether atmospheric turbulence is best characterized by a split isotropy that is three-dimensional (3D) with H=1/3 at small scales and two-dimensional (2D) with H=1 at large scales or by a wide-range anisotropic scaling with an intermediate value of H . Here, we introduce an "ensemble fractal dimension" D e – analogous to D – that relates the total cloud perimeter per domain area P as seen from space to the measurement resolution, and we show theoretically how turbulent dimensionality and cloud edge geometry can be linked through H=De-1 . Observationally and numerically, we find the scaling De∼5/3 or H∼2/3 , spanning 5 orders of magnitude of scale. Remarkably, the same scaling relationship links two "limiting case" estimates of P evaluated at resolutions corresponding to the planetary scale and the Kolmogorov microscale, which span 10 orders of magnitude. Our results are nearly consistent with a previously proposed "23/9D" anisotropic turbulent scaling and suggest that the geometric characteristics of clouds and turbulence in the atmosphere can be easily tied to well-known planetary physical parameters.

Abstract:Cylindrical lattice diffusion limited aggregation (DLA), with a narrow width N, is solved for site-sticking conditions using a Markovian matrix method (which was previously developed for the bond-sticking case). This matrix contains the probabilities that the front moves from one configuration to another at each growth step, calculated exactly by solving the Laplace equation and using the proper normalization. The method is applied for a series of approximations, which include only a finite number of rows near the front. The fractal dimensionality of the aggregate is extrapolated to a value near 1.68.

Space-Time Diffusion of Ground and Its Fractal Nature

Abstract:We present evidences of the diffusive motion of the ground and tunnels and show that if systematic movements are excluded then the remaining uncorrelated component of the motion obeys a characteristic fractal law with the displacement variance dY^2 scaling with time- and spatial intervals T and L as dY^2 \propto T^(Alpha)L^(Gamma) with both exponents close to 1. We briefly describe experimental methods of the mesa- and microscopic ground motion detection used in the measurements at the physics research facilities sensitive to the motion, particularly, large high energy elementary particle accelerators. A simple mathematical model of the fractal motion demonstrating the observed scaling law is also presented and discussed.

Abstract:Small-scale intermittency is an omnipresent feature of turbulent flows, and the velocity gradient tensor in three dimensions provides a rich characterization of its salient statistical and geometric features. A recent model for isotropic turbulence involving a set of stochastic differential equations was derived for the Lagrangian time evolution of the velocity gradient tensor at multiple scales. Dominant terms in the model could be derived directly from the Navier-Stokes equations while also requiring phenomenological models for unclosed pressure and viscous terms. In this work we show that instead of having to integrate this stochastic model in time at multiple levels and scales, the same predictions can be obtained based on a single level that recursively modulates the model terms interpreted at arbitrarily higher levels. The equivalence is explored based on actual realizations of the modeled stochastic process and then extended to probability densities and moments at all levels and scales. Statistical properties compare very well to direct numerical simulation and experimental data at different Reynolds numbers. The proposed formalism represents a new type of multifractal intermittency model that can be connected directly to terms in the Navier-Stokes equation and is capable of predicting many intricate statistical and geometric features of turbulent flows over a wide range of Reynolds numbers.
Internal stresses in low-Reynolds-number fractal aggregates

Abstract:We present a numerical model of fractal-structured aggregates in low-Reynolds-number flows. Assuming that aggregates are made of cubic particles, we first use a boundary integral method to compute the stresses acting on the boundary of the aggregates. From these external stresses, we compute the stresses within the aggregates in order to gain insights on their breakup, or disaggregation. We focus on systems in which aggregates are either settling under gravity or subjected to a background shear flow and study two types of aggregates, one with fractal dimension slightly less than two and one with fractal dimension slightly above two. We partition the aggregates into multiple shells based on the distance between the individual cubes in the aggregates and their center of mass and observe the distribution of internal stresses in each shell. Our findings indicate that large stresses are least likely to occur near the far edges of the aggregates. We also find that, for settling aggregates, the maximum internal stress scales as about 7.5% of the ratio of an aggregate's apparent weight to the area of the thinnest connection, here a single square. For aggregates exposed to a shear flow, we find that the maximum internal stress scales roughly quadratically with the aggregate radius. In addition, after breaking aggregates at the face with the maximum internal stress, we compute the mass distribution of sub-aggregates and observe significant differences between the settling and shear setups for the two types of aggregates, with the low-fractal-dimension aggregates being more likely to split approximately evenly. Information obtained by our numerical model can be used to develop more refined dynamical models that incorporate disaggregation.

Abstract:We present a fractional diffusion equation involving external force fields for transport phenomena in random media. It is shown that this fractional diffusion equation obey generalized Einstein relation, and its stationary solution is the Boltzmann distribution. It is proved that the asymptotic behavior of its solution is stretched Gaussian and that its solution can be expressed in the form of a function of a dimensionless similarity variable, not only for constant potentials but also for logarithm, harmonic, analytic and generic potentials. A comparison with the fractional Fokker–Planck equation is given.

Abstract:For every $\alpha < \frac13$, we construct an explicit divergence-free vector field $\mathbf{b}(t,x)$ which is periodic in space and time and belongs to $C^0_t C^{\alpha}_x \cap C^{\alpha}_t C^0_x$ such that the corresponding scalar advection-diffusion equation $$\partial_t \theta^\kappa + \mathbf{b} \cdot \nabla \theta^\kappa - \kappa \Delta \theta^\kappa = 0$$ exhibits anomalous dissipation of scalar variance for arbitrary $H^1$ initial data: $$\limsup_{\kappa \to 0} \int_0^{1} \int_{\mathbb{T}^d} \kappa \| \nabla \theta^\kappa (t,x) \|^2 \,dx\,dt >0.$$ The vector field is deterministic and has a fractal structure, with periodic shear flows alternating in time between different directions serving as the base fractal. These shear flows are repeatedly inserted at infinitely many scales in suitable Lagrangian coordinates. Using an argument based on ideas from quantitative homogenization, the corresponding advection-diffusion equation with small $\kappa$ is progressively renormalized, one scale at a time, starting from the (very small) length scale determined by the molecular diffusivity up to the macroscopic (unit) scale. At each renormalization step, the effective diffusivity is enhanced by the influence of advection on that scale. By iterating this procedure across many scales, the effective diffusivity on the macroscopic scale is shown to be of order one.
