Abstract:A study of the interaction of solar wind magnetic field rotations with the Earth's magnetosphere is performed. For this event there is, for the first time, a full coverage over the dayside magnetosphere with multiple (multi) spacecraft missions from dawn to dusk, combined with ground magnetometers, radar and an auroral camera, this gives a unique coverage of the response of the Earth's magnetosphere. After a long period of southward IMF Bz and high dynamic pressure of the solar wind, the Earth's magnetosphere is eroded and compressed and reacts quickly to the turning of the magnetic field. We use data from the solar wind monitors ACE and Wind and from magnetospheric missions Cluster, THEMIS, DoubleStar and Geotail to investigate the behaviour of the magnetic rotations as they move through the bow shock and magnetosheath. The response of the magnetosphere is investigated through ground magnetometers and auroral keograms. It is found that the solar wind magnetic field drapes over the magnetopause, while still co-moving with the plasma flow at the flanks. The magnetopause reacts quickly to IMF Bz changes, setting up field aligned currents, poleward moving aurorae and strong ionospheric convection. Timing of the structures between the solar wind, magnetosheath and the ground shows that the advection time of the structures, using the solar wind velocity, correlates well with the timing differences between the spacecraft. The reaction time of the magnetopause and the ionospheric current systems to changes in the magnetosheath Bz seem to be almost immediate, allowing for the advection of the structure measured by the spacecraft closest to the magnetopause.
Global solar magnetic field organization in the outer corona: influence on the solar wind speed and mass flux over the cycle

Abstract:The dynamics of the solar wind depends intrinsically on the structure of the global solar magnetic field, which undergoes fundamental changes over the 11-yr solar cycle. For instance, the wind terminal velocity is thought to be anti-correlated with the expansion factor, a measure of how the magnetic field varies with height in the solar corona, usually computed at a fixed height ($\approx 2.5 R_{\odot}$, the source surface radius which approximates the distance at which all magnetic field lines become open). However, the magnetic field expansion affects the solar wind in a more detailed way, its influence on the solar wind properties remaining significant well beyond the source surface. We demonstrate this using 3D global MHD simulations of the solar corona, constrained by surface magnetograms over half a solar cycle (1989-2001). A self-consistent expansion beyond the solar wind critical point (even up to $10R_{\odot}$) makes our model comply with observed characteristics of the solar wind, namely, that the radial magnetic field intensity becomes latitude independent at some distance from the Sun, and that the mass flux is mostly independent of the terminal wind speed. We also show that near activity minimum, the expansion in the higher corona has more influence on the wind speed than the expansion below $2.5 R_{\odot}$.

The Solar Wind Parker Spiral Angle Distributions and Variations at 1 au

Abstract:Using the data from the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and Wind spacecraft, we statistically studied the Parker spiral angle (PSA) of the solar wind magnetic field from 1998 to 2019 at 1 au. The PSA occurrences over both a Carrington rotation (CR) and a year can be well fitted by a Gaussian distribution. However, large-scale magnetic structures, such as interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), can significantly deviate the PSA distribution of a CR from the Gaussian distribution. The PSA distributions of each CR and each year are affected by the solar activity: They are more concentrated at a relatively higher average PSA at solar maximum. There is also a weak anticorrelation between the yearly solar wind speed (v sw ) and the average PSA. MESSENGER, Venus Express, and ACE observations at different heliocentric distances within 1 au show that the dominating polarities of the heliospheric magnetic field change greatly from year to year even when the solar activity is on the same level. Our results suggest that the PSA distribution in addition to the sunspot number can provide some new information on the magnetic field variation of the Sun.

Magnetic and Velocity Fluctuations in the Near-Sun Region from 0.1−0.3 Au Observed by Parker Solar Probe

Abstract:The fluctuations observed in the slow solar wind at 1 au by the WIND spacecraft are shown by recent studies to consist of mainly magnetic-field directional turning and magnetic-velocity alignment structure (MVAS). How these structures are created has been a question because the nature of the fluctuations in the near-Sun region remains unknown. Here, we present an analysis of the measurements in the slow solar wind from 0.1−0.3 au by Parker Solar Probe during its first six orbits. We present the distributions in the Cvb′–σr plane of both the occurrence and average amplitudes of the fluctuations, including the magnetic field, the velocity, and the Elsässer variables, where Cvb′ is the correlation coefficient between the magnetic and velocity fluctuations multiplied by the opposite sign of the radial component of the mean magnetic field and σ r is the normalized residual energy. We find that the dominant composition is the outward-propagating Alfvénic fluctuations. We find Alfvénic fluctuations with Cvb′>0.95 , in which the amplitudes of z + reach 60 km s−1 and those of z − are close to the observational uncertainty. We also find a region with high Cvb′ and moderate minus σ r in which the fluctuations are considered MVAS being magnetic dominated with the amplitude of magnetic fluctuations reaching 60 km s−1. We provide empirical relations between the velocity fluctuation amplitude and Cvb′ . The comparison between these results and those observed at 1 au may provide some clues as to the nature and evolution of the fluctuations.

Abstract:In-situ measurements by several spacecraft have revealed that the solar wind is frequently perturbed by transient structures (magnetic folds, jets, waves, flux-ropes) that propagate rapidly away from the Sun over large distances. Parker Solar Probe has detected frequent rotations of the magnetic field vector at small heliocentric distances, accompanied by surprisingly large solar wind rotation rates. The physical origin of such magnetic field bends, the conditions for their survival across the interplanetary space, and their relation to solar wind rotation are yet to be clearly understood. We traced measured solar wind flows from the spacecraft position down to the surface of the Sun to identify their potential source regions and used a global MHD model of the corona and solar wind to relate them to the rotational state of the low solar corona. We identified regions of the solar corona for which solar wind speed and rotational shear are important and long-lived, that can be favourable to the development of magnetic deflections and to their propagation across extended heights in the solar wind. We show that coronal rotation is highly structured and that enhanced flow shear develops near the boundaries between coronal holes and streamers, around and above pseudo-streamers, even when such boundaries are aligned with the direction of solar rotation. A large fraction of the switchbacks identified by PSP map back to these regions, both in terms of instantaneous magnetic field connectivity and of the trajectories of wind streams that reach the spacecraft. These regions of strong shears are likely to leave an imprint on the solar wind over large distances and to increase the transverse speed variability in the slow solar wind. The simulations and connectivity analysis suggest they can be a source of the switchbacks and spikes observed by Parker Solar Probe.
Evolution of solar wind sources and coronal rotation driven by the cyclic variation of the Sun's large-scale magnetic field

Abstract:The strength and morphology of the Sun's magnetic field evolves significantly during the solar cycle, with the overall polarity of the Sun's magnetic field reversing during the maximum of solar activity. Long-term changes are also observed in sunspot and geomagnetic records, however systematic magnetic field observations are limited to the last four cycles. We investigate the long-term evolution of the Sun's magnetic field, and the influence this has on the topology and rotation of the solar corona. The Sun's photospheric magnetic field was decomposed into spherical harmonics using synoptic Carrington magnetograms from 1) WSO, 2) MDI onboard the SOHO, and 3) HMI onboard the SDO. The time-evolution of the spherical harmonic coefficients was used to explore the variation of the Sun's magnetic field, focusing on the large-scale modes. PFSS extrapolations of the photospheric field were computed to follow topological changes in the corona. The footpoints of the Sun's open magnetic field vary between the polar coronal holes and activity driven features such as active regions, and equatorial coronal holes. Consequently, the mean rotation rate of the solar wind is modulated during each cycle by the latitudinal variation of open field footpoints, with slower rotation during minima and faster (Carrington-like) rotation during maxima. Thisc variation is sensitive to cycle to cycle differences in the polar field strengths and hemispherical flux emergence rates, with the ratio of quadrupole to dipole energy following a similar variation. Cycle 23 maintained a larger fraction of quadrupolar energy in the declining phase, which kept the sources of open magnetic flux closer to the equator, extending the period of faster equator-ward connectivity. The ratio of quadrupole to dipole energy could be a useful proxy when examining the impact of differential rotation on the coronae of other Sun-like stars.

Properties underlying the variation of the magnetic field spectral index in the inner solar wind

Abstract:Using data from orbits one to eleven of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission, the magnetic field spectral index was measured across a range of heliocentric distances. The previously observed transition between a value of $-5/3$ far from the Sun and a value of $-3/2$ close to the Sun was recovered, with the transition occurring at around $50 \, R_{\odot}$ and the index saturating at $-3/2$ as the Sun is approached. A statistical analysis was performed to separate the variation of the index on distance from its dependence on other parameters of the solar wind that are plausibly responsible for the transition; including the cross helicity, residual energy, turbulence age and the magnitude of magnetic fluctuations. Of all parameters considered the cross helicity was found to be by far the strongest candidate for the underlying variable responsible. The velocity spectral index was also measured and found to be consistent with $-3/2$ over the range of values of cross helicity measured. Possible explanations for the behaviour of the indices are discussed, including the theorised different behaviour of imbalanced, compared to balanced, turbulence.

Abstract:The prediction of a supersonic solar wind<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR1">1</a> was first confirmed by spacecraft near Earth<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR3">3</a> and later by spacecraft at heliocentric distances as small as 62 solar radii<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR4">4</a>. These missions showed that plasma accelerates as it emerges from the corona, aided by unidentified processes that transport energy outwards from the Sun before depositing it in the wind. Alfvénic fluctuations are a promising candidate for such a process because they are seen in the corona and solar wind and contain considerable energy<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR7">7</a>. Magnetic tension forces the corona to co-rotate with the Sun, but any residual rotation far from the Sun reported until now has been much smaller than the amplitude of waves and deflections from interacting wind streams<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR8">8</a>. Here we report observations of solar-wind plasma at heliocentric distances of about 35 solar radii<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR11">11</a>, well within the distance at which stream interactions become important. We find that Alfvén waves organize into structured velocity spikes with duration of up to minutes, which are associated with propagating S-like bends in the magnetic-field lines. We detect an increasing rotational component to the flow velocity of the solar wind around the Sun, peaking at 35 to 50 kilometres per second—considerably above the amplitude of the waves. These flows exceed classical velocity predictions of a few kilometres per second, challenging models of circulation in the corona and calling into question our understanding of how stars lose angular momentum and spin down as they age<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR14">14</a>.

Intermittency in the Expanding Solar Wind: Observations from Parker Solar Probe (0.16au), Helios 1 (0.3-1au), and Voyager 1 (1-10au)

Abstract:We examine statistics of magnetic field vector components to explore how intermittency evolves from near sun plasma to radial distances as large as 10 au. Statistics entering the analysis include auto-correlation, magnetic structure functions of order n (SFn), and scale dependent kurtosis (SDK), each grouped in ranges of heliocentric distance. The Goddard Space Flight Center Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF) provides magnetic field measurements for resolutions of 6.8ms for Parker Solar Probe, 6s for Helios, and 1.92s for Voyager 1. We compute SF2 to determine the scales encompassing the inertial range and examine SDK to investigate degree of non-Gaussianity. Auto-correlations are used to resolve correlation scales. Correlation lengths and ion inertial lengths provide an estimate of effective Reynolds number (Re). Variation in Re allows us to examine for the first time the relationship between SDK and Re in an interplanetary plasma. A conclusion from this observed relationship is that regions with lower Re at a fixed physical scale have on average lower kurtosis, implying less intermittent behavior. Kolmogorov refined similarity hypothesis is applied to magnetic SFn and kurtosis to calculate intermittency parameters and fractal scaling in the inertial range. A refined Voyager 1 magnetic field dataset is generated.

Effect of Magnetic Field Strength on Solar Differential Rotation and Meridional Circulation

Abstract:We studied the solar surface flows (differential rotation and meridional circulation) using a magnetic element feature tracking technique by which the surface velocity is obtained using magnetic field data. We used the line-of-sight magnetograms obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory from 01 May 2010 to 16 August 2017 (Carrington rotations 2096 to 2193) and tracked the magnetic element features every hour. Using our method, we estimated the differential rotation velocity profile. We found rotation velocities of $\sim$ 30 and -170 m s$^{-1}$ at latitudes of 0$^{\circ}$ and 60$^{\circ}$ in the Carrington rotation frame, respectively. Our results are consistent with previous results obtained by other methods, such as direct Doppler, time-distance helioseismology, or cross correlation analyses. We also estimated the meridional circulation velocity profile and found that it peaked at $\sim$12 m s$^{-1}$ at a latitude of 45$^{\circ}$, which is also consistent with previous results. The dependence of the surface flow velocity on the magnetic field strength was also studied. In our analysis, the magnetic elements having stronger and weaker magnetic fields largely represent the characteristics of the active region remnants and solar magnetic networks, respectively. We found that magnetic elements having a strong (weak) magnetic field show faster (slower) rotation speed. On the other hand, magnetic elements having a strong (weak) magnetic field show slower (faster) meridional circulation velocity. These results might be related to the Sun's internal dynamics.

Density Enhancement Streams in The Solar Wind

Abstract:This letter describes a new phenomenon on the Parker Solar Probe of recurring plasma density enhancements that have $\Delta$n/n ~10% and that occur at a repetition rate of ~5 Hz. They were observed sporadically for about five hours between 14 and 15 solar radii on Parker Solar Probe orbit 12 and they were also seen in the same radial range on both the inbound and outbound orbits 11. Their apparently steady-state existence suggests that their pressure gradient was balanced by the electric field. The EX electric field component produced from this requirement is in good agreement with that measured. This provides strong evidence for the measurement accuracy of the density fluctuations and the X- and Y-components of the electric field (the Z-component was not measured). The electrostatic density waves were accompanied by an electromagnetic low frequency wave which occurred with the electrostatic harmonics. The amplitudes of these electrostatic and electromagnetic waves at $\ge$ 1 Hz were greater than the amplitude of the Alfvenic turbulence in their vicinity so they can be important for the heating, scattering, and acceleration of the plasma. The existence of this pair of waves is consistent with the observed plasma distributions and is explained by a magneto-acoustic wave theory that produces a low frequency electromagnetic wave and electrostatic harmonics.

Wave Composition, Propagation, and Polarization of Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence Within 0.3 Au As Observed by Parker Solar Probe

Abstract:Turbulence, a ubiquitous phenomenon in interplanetary space, is crucial for the energy conversion of space plasma at multiple scales. This work focuses on the propagation, polarization, and wave composition properties of the solar wind turbulence within 0.3 au, and its variation with heliocentric distance at magnetohydrodynamic scales (from 10 s to 1000 s in the spacecraft frame). We present the probability density function of propagation wavevectors (PDF (k(parallel to),k)) for solar wind turbulence within 0.3 au for the first time: (1) wavevectors cluster quasi-(anti-)parallel to the local background magnetic field forkd(i) < 0.02, whered(i)is the ion inertial length; (2) wavevectors shift to quasi-perpendicular directions forkd(i) > 0.02. Based on our wave composition diagnosis, we find that: the outward/anti-sunward Alfven mode dominates over the whole range of scales and distances, the spectral energy density fraction of the inward/sunward fast mode decreases with distance, and the fractional energy densities of the inward and outward slow mode increase with distance. The outward fast mode and inward Alfven mode represent minority populations throughout the explored range of distances and scales. On average, the degree of anisotropy of the magnetic fluctuations defined with respect to the minimum variation direction decreases with increasing scale, with no trend in distance at any scale. Our results provide comprehensive insight into the scenario of transport and transfer of the solar wind fluctuations/turbulence in the inner heliosphere.
Anisotropy of Density Fluctuations in the Solar Wind at 1 au

Abstract:A well-known property of solar wind plasma turbulence is the observed anisotropy of the autocorrelations, or equivalently the spectra, of velocity and magnetic field fluctuations. Here we explore the related but apparently not well-studied issue of the anisotropy of plasma density fluctuations in the energy-containing and inertial ranges of solar wind turbulence. Using 10 years (1998-2008) of in situ data from the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) mission, we find that for all but the fastest wind category, the density correlation scale is slightly larger in directions quasi-parallel to the large-scale mean magnetic field as compared to quasi-perpendicular directions. The correlation scale in fast wind is consistent with isotropic. The anisotropy as a function of the level of correlation is also explored. We find at small correlation levels, i.e., at energy-containing scales and larger, the density fluctuations are close to isotropy for fast wind, and slightly favor more rapid decorrelation in perpendicular directions for slow and medium winds. At relatively smaller (inertial range) scales where the correlation values are larger, the sense of anisotropy is reversed in all speed ranges, implying a more "slab-like" structure, especially prominent in the fast wind samples. We contrast this finding with published results on velocity and magnetic field correlations.

Magneto-inertial range dominated by magnetic helicity in space plasmas

Abstract:Magneto-inertial range dominated by magnetic helicity has been studied using results of numerical simulations, laboratory measurements, solar, solar wind, the Earth's and planets' magnetosphere observations (spacecraft measurements), and the global magnetic observatory network. The spectral data have been compared with the theoretical results based on the distributed chaos notion in the frames of the Kolmogorov-Iroshnikov phenomenology. The transition from magnetohydrodynamics to kinetics in the electron and Hall magnetohydrodynamics, and in a fully kinetic 3D approach, as well as in the solar wind, solar photosphere, and at the special events (reconnections, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, isolated flux tube interchanges, etc.) in the magnetosphere of Earth, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury has been studied using the above-mentioned data. Despite the considerable differences in the physical parameters and scales, the results of numerical simulations are in quantitative agreement with the observational data in the frames of the magneto-inertial range notion. Temporal variability of the magnetic field at Earth's surface under the influence of the ionosphere, magnetosphere, and solar wind has been also briefly discussed in this context.

Simulations of solar wind variations during an 11-year cycle and the influence of north-south asymmetry

Abstract:We want to study the connections between the magnetic field generated inside the Sun and the solar wind impacting Earth, especially the influence of north-south asymmetry on the magnetic and velocity fields. We study a solar-like 11-year cycle in a quasi-static way: an asymmetric dynamo field is generated through a 2.5-dimensional (2.5-D) flux-transport model with the Babcock-Leighton mechanism, and then is used as bottom boundary condition for compressible 2.5-D simulations of the solar wind. We recover solar values for the mass loss rate, the spin-down time scale and the Alfvén radius, and are able to reproduce the observed delay in latitudinal variations of the wind and the general wind structure observed for the Sun. We show that the phase lag between the energy of the dipole component and the total surface magnetic energy has a strong influence on the amplitude of the variations of global quantities. We show in particular that the magnetic torque variations can be linked to topological variations during a magnetic cycle, while variations in the mass loss rate appear to be driven by variations of the magnetic energy.

Abstract:Interactions between flows and magnetic fields in the Sun's plasma can change surface waves and flows near active regions, are evident in cyclic changes of large-scale phenomena such as the meridional circulation, and contribute to dynamics in the long-term solar magnetic cycle, e.g. during the recent prolonged solar minimum. We investigate possible relationships between these phenomena. We have observed changes in solar surface flow patterns in active regions, dependent on magnetic field strength and orientation, consistent with the theoretically predicted Proctor Effect. Other researchers have observed relationships between changes in solar magnetic fields and meridional circulation flows. We explore similarities between the Proctor Effect and the observed interdependence of larger-scale magnetic fields and flows. This may contribute to understanding of fundamental solar convection and dynamo processes, e.g. the prolonged magnetic minimum of the most recent cycle.

Global Simulation of the Solar Wind: A Comparison With Parker Solar Probe Observations During 2018-2022

Abstract:Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models play an important role in the infrastructure of space weather forecasting. Validating such models commonly utilizes in situ solar wind measurements made near the orbit of the Earth. The purpose of this study is to test the performance of G3DMHD (a data driven, time-dependent, 3-D MHD model of the solar wind) with Parker Solar Probe (PSP) measurements. Since its launch in August 2018, PSP has traversed the inner heliosphere at different radial distances sunward of the Earth (the closest approach ~13.3 solar radii), thus providing a good opportunity to study evolution of the solar wind and to validate heliospheric models of the solar wind. The G3DMHD model simulation is driven by a sequence of maps of photospheric field extrapolated to the assumed source surface (2.5 Rs) using the potential field model from 2018 to 2022, which covers the first 15 PSP orbits. The Pearson correlation coefficient (cc) and the mean absolute squared error (MASE) are used as the metrics to evaluate the model performance. It is found that the model performs better for both magnetic intensity (cc = 0.75; MASE = 0.60) and the solar wind density (cc = 0.73; MASE = 0.50) than for the solar wind speed (cc = 0.15; MASE = 1.29) and temperature (cc = 0.28; MASE = 1.14). This is due primarily to lack of accurate boundary conditions. The well-known underestimate of the magnetic field in solar minimum years is also present. Assuming that the radial magnetic field becomes uniformly distributed with latitude at or below 18 Rs (the inner boundary of the computation do-main), the agreement in the magnetic intensity significantly improves (cc = 0.83; MASE = 0.49).

Abstract:Magnetic fluctuations in the solar wind are often observed to maintain constant magnitude of the magnetic field in a manner consistent with spherically-polarized large-amplitude Alfvén waves. We investigate the effect of spherical polarization on the magnetic spectral index through a statistical survey of magnetic fluctuations observed by Parker Solar Probe between 20$R_\odot$ and 200$R_\odot$. We find that deviations from spherical polarization, i.e., changes in $|\mathbf{B}|$ (compressive fluctuations) and one-dimensional discontinuities, have a dramatic effect on the scaling behavior of the turbulent fluctuations. We show that shallow $k^{-3/2}$ spectra are only observed for constant magnetic field strength, three-dimensional structures, which we identify as large amplitude Alfvén waves. The presence of compressive fluctuations coincides with a steepening of the spectrum up to $k^{-5/3}$. Steeper power law scalings approaching $k^{-2}$ are observed when the fluctuations are dominated by discontinuities. Near-sun fluctuations are found to be the most spherically polarized, suggesting that this spherical state is fundamental to the generation of the solar wind. With increasing distance from the Sun, fluctuations are found to become less three dimensional and more compressive, which may indicate the breakdown of the Alfvénic equilibrium state.

Abstract:Connecting the solar wind observed throughout the heliosphere to its origins in the solar corona is one of the central aims of heliophysics. The variability in the magnetic field, bulk plasma, and heavy ion composition properties of the slow wind are thought to result from magnetic reconnection processes in the solar corona. We identify regions of enhanced variability and composition in the solar wind from 2003 April 15 to May 13 (Carrington Rotation 2002), observed by the Wind and Advanced Composition Explorer spacecraft, and demonstrate their relationship to the Separatrix-Web (S-Web) structures describing the corona's large-scale magnetic topology. There are four pseudostreamer (PS) wind intervals and two helmet streamer (HS) heliospheric current sheet/plasma sheet crossings (and an ICME) which all exhibit enhanced alpha-to-proton ratios and/or elevated ionic charge states of carbon, oxygen, and iron. We apply the magnetic helicity-partial variance of increments ($H_m$-PVI) procedure to identify coherent magnetic structures and quantify their properties during each interval. The mean duration of these structures are $\sim$1 hr in both the HS and PS wind. We find a modest enhancement above the power-law fit to the PVI waiting time distribution in the HS-associated wind at the 1.5-2 hr timescales that is absent from the PS intervals. We discuss our results in context of previous observations of the $\sim$90 min periodic density structures in the slow solar wind, further development of the dynamic S-Web model, and future Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter joint observational campaigns.

Abstract:This work focuses on the relation between the electron density and the magnetic field strength in the solar wind, and aims to reveal its compressive nature and to determine the level of compressibility. For this purpose, we choose a period of quiet solar wind data obtained at 1 AU by the Cluster C1 satellite. The electron density is derived with a sampling time as high as 0.2 s from the spacecraft-potential measurements made by the Electric Field and Waves instrument. We use the wavelet cross-coherence method to analyze the correlation between the electron density and the magnetic field strength on various scales. We find a dominant anti-correlation between them at different timescales ranging from 1000 s down to 10 s, a result which has never been reported before. This may indicate the existence of pressure-balanced structures (PBSs) with different sizes in the solar wind. The small ( mini) PBSs appear to be embedded in the large PBSs, without affecting the pressure balance between the large structures. Thus, a nesting of these possible multi-scale PBSs is found. Moreover, we find for the first time that the relative fluctuation spectra of both the electron number density and the magnetic field strength look almost the same in the range from 0.01 Hz to 2.5Hz, implying a similar cascading for these two types of fluctuations. Probable formation mechanisms for the multi-scale possible PBSs are discussed. The results of our work are believed to be helpful for understanding the compressive nature of solar wind turbulence as well as the connections between the solar wind streams and their coronal sources.
