Abstract:We have conducted a series of investigations on the geometry of the reddening material in AGNs, which have important implications to the AGN unification and SMBH demography. According to our statistics of partially obscured quasars, we found that SMBHs in partially obscured type/phase (i.e., intermediate type) are at least as abundant as normal quasars in the local Universe; the reddening material in most objects are located in between the BLR and NLR. According to our comparison of narrow lines in type 1 and 2 AGNs, we found that for high-ionization or high-critical density narrow lines (e.g. OIII 5007, Balmer lines and FeII) a significant fraction of the emission arises from the inner dense part of the NLR; this inner NLR is located very close to the central engine and thus can be covered by the torus.

Abstract:We examine the order of the phase transition in the Potts model by using the graph representation for the partition function, which allows treating a non-integer number of Potts states. The order of transition is determined by the analysis of the shape of the graph-weight probability distribution. The approach is illustrated on special cases of the one-dimensional Potts model with long-range interactions and on its mean-field limit.

Broad Absorption Line Quasars and the Radio-Loud/Radio-Quiet Dichotomy

Abstract:The observation that the extremely broad, blueshifted absorption troughs which characterize broad absorption line quasars (BALQs) occur exclusively in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) suggests that this class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) may offer important clues to the radio-loud/radio-quiet (RL/RQ) dichotomy in quasars. Interestingly, there is also substantial observational evidence for similar, but lower velocity intrinsic absorption outflows in some Seyferts and radio-loud quasars (RLQs) as well. Theoretically, however, it is difficult to interpret this broad range of mass ejection phenomena in the context of the standard model for BALQs. Thus, a new model is considered here in which the thermal gas producing the blueshifted absorption troughs is associated with a poorly collimated outflow of weakly radio-emitting plasma -- in essence, a weak jet. This model provides an appropriate framework not only for assessing the possible connection between the BAL phenomenon in RQQs and related intrinsic absorption outflows in stronger radio sources and in less luminous sources, both of which are known to possess jet-like radio structure, but also for understanding the RL/RQ dichotomy in light of recent observations which indicate that at least some RQQs possess central engines that are capable of producing weak versions of the powerful radio jets characteristic of RLQs.

Abstract:We study the properties of long gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies using a statistical modelling framework derived to model damped Lyman- absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra at high redshift. The distribution of for GRB-DLAs is 10 times higher than what is found for quasar-DLAs at similar impact parameters. We interpret this as a temporal selection effect due to the short-lived GRB progenitor probing its host at the onset of a starburst where the interstellar medium may exhibit multiple overdense regions. Owing to the larger , the dust extinction is larger with 29 per cent of GRB-DLAs exhibiting mag in agreement with the fraction of 'dark bursts'. Despite the differences in distributions, we find that high-redshift quasar- and GRB-DLAs trace the luminosity function of star-forming host galaxies in the same way. We propose that their differences may arise from the fact that the galaxies are sampled at different times in their star formation histories, and that the absorption sightlines probe the galaxy haloes differently. Quasar-DLAs sample the full H i cross-section, whereas GRB-DLAs sample only regions hosting cold neutral medium. Previous studies have found that GRBs avoid high-metallicity galaxies ( 0.5 ). Since at these redshifts galaxies on average have lower metallicities, our sample is only weakly sensitive to such a threshold. Lastly, we find that the modest detection rate of cold gas (H or C i ) in GRB spectra can be explained mainly by a low volume filling factor of cold gas clouds and to a lesser degree by destruction from the GRB explosion itself.

New insights on the distant AGN population

Abstract:Current X-ray surveys have proved to be essential tools in order to identify and study AGNs across cosmic time. However, there is evidence that the most heavily obscured AGNs are largely missing even in the deepest surveys. The search for these obscured AGNs is one of the most outstanding issues of extragalactic astronomy, since they are expected to make a major contribution to the high energy peak of the X-ray background (XRB) and might constitute a particularly active and dusty phase of black hole and galaxy evolution. Using a newly developed SED fitting technique to decompose the AGN from the star-formation emission in the infrared band we identify a sample of 17 IR bright quasars at z=1-3. For the majority of these sources the X-ray spectrum is well characterised by an absorbed power law model, revealing that ~25% of the sources are unabsorbed; the remainder of these IR quasars have moderate-to-high absorption (N_H>10^23 cm^-2), and ~25% are not detected in the X-rays and are likely to be Compton thick (N_H>10^24 cm^-2). We therefore find a much higher fraction of obscured than unobscured quasars, indicating that a large fraction of the luminous black hole accretion was very heavily obscured at z~2.

The luminous host galaxies of high redshift BL Lac objects

Abstract:(abridged) We present near-infrared Ks-band imaging of 13 high redshift (0.6 < z < 1.3) BL Lac objects. We clearly detect the host in eight objects, and marginally in three others. In all cases, the host galaxy is well represented by an r^1/4 surface brightness law. The host galaxies of high redshift BL Lacs are large (<R(e)> ~7 kpc) and very luminous (<M(K)> = -27.9+-0.7), ~3 mag brighter than L*, and ~1 mag brighter than brightest cluster galaxies. They are also ~1 mag brighter than low redshift radio galaxies and appear to deviate from their K-z relationship. On the other hand, the high luminosities agree with the few optical studies of high redshift BL Lac hosts. The nuclear luminosity and the nucleus-galaxy luminosity ratio of the high redshift BL Lacs are much larger than those in low redshift BL Lacs. This may be due to either a higher intrinsic nuclear luminosity, or enhanced luminosity because of strong beaming. Contrary to what is observed in low redshift BL Lacs, the luminosities of the host galaxy and of the nucleus are fairly well correlated, as expected from the black hole mass - bulge luminosity relationship. High redshift BL Lacs radiate with a wide range of power with respect to their Eddington luminosity, and this power is intermediate between those in nearby BL Lacs and in luminous radio-loud quasars. The high redshift BL Lac host galaxies appear to be ~2 mag brighter than those at low redshift. This is likely due to a strong selection effect in the surveys of BL Lacs that makes observable only the most luminous sources at z > 0.5 and produces a correlation between the nuclear and the host luminosity. However, this may also suggest strong luminosity evolution which is inconsistent with a simple passive evolution of the host galaxies, and requires a contribution from relatively recent star formation episodes.

Abstract:QUASARS are the most luminous objects in the Universe. It has been speculated that they are the visible evidence for accretion of gas onto supermassive black holes that reside at the centres of host galaxies. Direct observational confirmation that quasars reside in the centres of galaxies has been hard to obtain, because atmospheric turbulence usually scatters the quasar light sufficiently to swamp the signal from the fainter surrounding galaxy. Despite the difficulties, however, many attempts have been made to observe the host galaxies1–17, although the results have not been definitive18. Here we report observations of four quasars, made with the refurbished Hubble Space Telescope. In all four cases the quasars reside in luminous elliptical galaxies with very close companions. This is in contrast to recent work19,20in which host galaxies were not observed (in a sample of quasars that has one in common with ours). The elliptical galaxies are featureless, but the presence of close companions is suggestive of continuing interactions.

Abstract:We present Hubble Space Telescope 1.4-1.6 micron images of the hosts of ten extremely red quasars (ERQs) and six type 2 quasar candidates at z=2-3. ERQs, whose bolometric luminosities range between 10^47 and 10^48 erg/sec, show spectroscopic signs of powerful ionized winds, whereas type 2 quasar candidates are less luminous and show only mild outflows. After performing careful subtraction of the quasar light, we clearly detect almost all host galaxies. The median rest-frame B-band luminosity of the ERQ hosts in our sample is 10^11.2 L_Sun, or 4 L* at this redshift. Two of the ten hosts of ERQs are in ongoing mergers. The hosts of the type 2 quasar candidates are 0.6 dex less luminous, with 2/6 in likely ongoing mergers. Intriguingly, despite some signs of interaction and presence of low-mass companions, our objects do not show nearly as much major merger activity as do high-redshift radio-loud galaxies and quasars. In the absence of an overt connection to major ongoing gas-rich merger activity, our observations are consistent with a model in which the near-Eddington accretion and strong feedback of ERQs are associated with relatively late stages of mergers resulting in early-type remnants. These results are in some tension with theoretical expectations of galaxy formation models, in which rapid black hole growth occurs within a short time of a major merger. Type 2 quasar candidates are less luminous, so they may instead be powered by internal galactic processes.
Severe New Limits on the Host Galaxies of Gamma Ray Bursts

Abstract:The nature of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) remains a complete mystery, despite the recent breakthrough discovery of low energy counterparts, although it is now generally believed that at least most GRBs are at cosmological distances. Virtually all proposed cosmological models require bursters to reside in ordinary galaxies. This can be tested by looking inside the smallest GRB error boxes to see if ordinary galaxies appear at the expected brightness levels. This letter reports on an analysis of the contents of 26 of the smallest regions, many from the brightest bursts. These events will have $z < 0.4$ and small uncertainties about luminosity functions, K corrections and galaxy evolutions; whereas the recent events with optical transients are much fainter and hence have high redshifts and grave difficulties in interpretation. This analysis strongly rejects the many models with peak luminosities of $10^{57} photons \cdot s^{-1}$ as deduced from the $LogN-LogP$ curve with no evolution. Indeed, the lower limit on acceptable luminosities is $6 \times 10^{58} photons \cdot s^{-1}$. The only possible solution is to either place GRBs at unexpectedly large distances (with $z > 5.9$ for the faint BATSE bursts) or to require bursters to be far outside any normal host galaxy.

Quasar Absorption Lines from Radiative Shocks: Implications for Multiphase Outflows and Feedback

Abstract:Photoionization modeling of certain low-ionization broad absorption lines in quasars implies very compact (Delta R~0.01 pc), galaxy-scale (R kpc) absorbers blueshifted by several 1000 km s^-1. While these are likely signatures of quasar outflows, the lifetimes of such compact absorbers are too short for them to be direct ejecta from a nuclear wind. Instead, I argue that the absorbing clouds must be transient and created in situ. Following arguments detailed by Faucher-Giguere, Quataert, & Murray (2011), I show that a model in which the cool absorbers form in radiative shocks arising when a quasar blast wave impacts an interstellar cloud along the line of sight successfully explains the key observed properties. Using this radiative shock model, the outflow kinetic luminosities for three luminous quasars are estimated to be Edot,k~2-5% L_AGN (with corresponding momentum fluxes Pdot~2-15 L_AGN/c), consistent with feedback models of the M-sigma relation. These energetics are similar to those recently inferred of molecular outflows in local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies and in post-starburt winds, suggesting that active galactic nuclei (AGN) are capable of driving such outflows. Radiative shocks probably affect the multiphase structure of outflows in a range of other systems, including narrower and higher-ionization quasar absorption lines, and compact intergalactic absorbers ejected by star formation and AGN activity.

Abstract:A variety of investigations have demonstrated commonalities between the Baldwin (1977) Effect, the blueshifting of CIV emission lines (e.g., Gaskell 1982; Richards et al. 2002), and the L_UV-L_X relationship (e.g., Avni & Tananbaum 1982; Strateva et al. 2005; Steffen et al. 2006); indeed all three of these observational effects may be manifestations of the same underlying (but still uncertain) physics. This commonality is of interest to investigations of accretion disk winds (e.g., Murray et al. 1995; Proga et al. 2000) from active galactic nuclei (AGN) as there is evidence that broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs) are drawn from a parent sample of quasars that exhibit larger than average CIV blueshifts, weaker than average CIV emission line strengths, and bluer than average (intrinsic) colors. The properties of the absorption troughs appear to be dependent upon these parameters. Thus, it is suggested that not all quasars will host bona-fide BAL troughs, but that all (broad emission line) quasars host outflows of some type, the structure of which is strongly dependent on the quasar's spectral energy distribution.

Luminous and High-Frequency Peaked Blazars: the Origin of the Γ-Ray Emission from PKS 1424+240

Abstract:Context. The current generation of ground-based Cherenkov telescopes, together with the LAT instrument on-board the Fermi satellite, have greatly increased our knowledge of γ-ray blazars. Among them, the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object (HBL) PKS 1424+240 (z ≃ 0.6) is the farthest persistent emitter of very-high-energy (VHE; E ≥ 100 GeV) γ-ray photons. Current emission models can satisfactorily reproduce typical blazar emission assuming that the dominant emission process is synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) in HBLs; and external-inverse-Compton (EIC) in low-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae objects and flat-spectrum-radio-quasars. Alternatively, hadronic models are also able to correctly reproduce the γ-ray emission from blazars, although they are in general disfavored for bright quasars and rapid flares. Aims. The blazar PKS 1424+240 is a rare example of a luminous HBL, and we aim to determine which is the emission process most likely responsible for its γ-ray emission. This will impact more generally our comprehension of blazar emission models, and how they are related to the luminosity of the source and the peak frequency of the spectral energy distribution. Methods. We have investigated different blazar emission models applied to the spectral energy distribution of PKS 1424+240. Among leptonic models, we study a one-zone SSC model (including a systematic study of the parameter space), a two-zone SSC model, and an EIC model. We then investigated a blazar hadronic model, and finally a scenario in which the γ-ray emission is associated with cascades in the line-of-sight produced by cosmic rays from the source. Results. After a systematic study of the parameter space of the one-zone SSC model, we conclude that this scenario is not compatible with γ-ray observations of PKS 1424+240. A two-zone SSC scenario can alleviate this issue, as well as an EIC solution. For the latter, the external photon field is assumed to be the infra-red radiation from the dusty torus, otherwise the VHE γ-ray emission would have been significantly absorbed. Alternatively, hadronic models can satisfactorily reproduce the γ-ray emission from PKS 1424+240, both as in-source emission and as cascade emission.
XMM-Newton spectroscopy of high-redshift QSOs

Abstract:XMM-Newton observations of 29 high redshift (z>2) quasars, including seven radio-quiet, 16 radio-loud and six Broad Absorption Line (BAL) objects, are presented; due to the high redshifts, the rest-frame energy bands extend up to \~30-70 keV. Over 2-10 keV, the quasars can be well fitted in each case by a simple power-law, with no strong evidence for iron emission lines. The lack of iron lines is in agreement both with dilution by the radio jet emission (for the radio-loud quasars) and the X-ray Baldwin effect. No Compton reflection humps at higher energies (i.e., above 10 keV in the rest frame) are detected either. Over the broad-band (0.3-10 keV), approximately half (nine out of 16) of the radio-loud quasars are intrinsically absorbed, with the values of N_H generally being 1-2 x 10^22 cm^-2 in the rest frames of the objects. None of the seven radio-quiet objects shows excess absorption, while four of the six BAL quasars are absorbed. The radio-loud quasars have flatter continuum slopes than their radio-quiet counterparts (Gamma_RL ~ 1.55; Gamma_RQ ~ 1.98 over 2-10 keV), while, after modelling the absorption, the underlying photon index for the six BAL quasars is formally consistent with the non-BAL radio-quiet objects.

Abstract:Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can power relativistic jets, which are called blazars when pointed close to our line of sight. Depending on the presence or absence of emission lines in their optical spectra, blazars are categorized into flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) or BL Lacertae (BL Lacs) objects. According to the 'blazar sequence', as synchrotron peak frequency ($\nu^{sy}_{pk}$) shifts to higher energies, the synchrotron peak luminosity decreases. This means that BL Lacs as luminous as FSRQs, and with synchrotron peak frequencies $\nu^{sy}_{pk}>10^{15}$ Hz, should not exist. Detected as a high-synchrotron peak (HSP; $\nu^{sy}_{pk}>10^{15}$ Hz) BL Lac, 4FGL J1520.8-0348 shows high gamma-ray luminosity ($L_{\gamma}>10^{46}\,\rm erg~s^{-1}$), being at a high redshift of $z=$1.46. Since it is an outlier in the 'blazar sequence', the process of its jet acceleration and power may be different from bona fide BL Lacs. In this work, we constrain its spectral energy distribution (SED) by modeling the multi-wavelength data from infrared to $\gamma$-ray regime. Simultaneous X-ray data was obtained from X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array to constrain the synchrotron emission and underlying electron distribution. On undertaking the SED modeling of the source, including the effect of extragalactic background light, we conclude that the source is more likely to be a 'blue FSRQ' or 'masquerading BL Lac' where the BL Lac is actually a FSRQ in disguise.

A Multiwavelength Study of the Most Distant Gamma-ray Detected BL Lacertae Object 4FGL J1219.0+3653 ($z=3.59$)

Abstract:BL Lac objects are a class of jetted active galactic nuclei that do not exhibit or have weak emission lines in their optical spectra. Recently, the first $\gamma$-ray emitting BL Lac beyond $z=3$, 4FGL J1219.0 +3653 (hereafter J1219), was identified, i.e., within the first two billion years of the age of the universe. Here we report the results obtained from a detailed broadband study of this peculiar source by analyzing the new $\sim$58 ksec XMM-Newton and archival observations and reproducing the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution with the conventional one-zone leptonic radiative model. The XMM-Newton~data revealed that J1219 is a faint X-ray emitter ($F_{\rm 0.3-10~keV}=8.39^{+4.11}_{-2.40}\times10^{-15}$ erg/cm2/s) and exhibits a soft spectrum (0.3$-$10 keV photon index$=2.28^{+0.58}_{-0.48}$). By comparing the broadband physical properties of J1219 with $z>3$ $\gamma$-ray detected flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), we have found that it has a relatively low jet power and, similar to FSRQs, the jet power is larger than the accretion disk luminosity. We conclude that deeper multiwavelength observations will be needed to fully explore the physical properties of this unique high-redshift BL Lac object.

Abstract:BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects are a subclass of blazar, distinguished by their featureless optical spectrum. The featureless spectrum presents a challenge in measuring the redshift of the BL Lacs. In this paper, we measure the redshift of BL Lacs using the photometric dropout technique. The space-based telescope Swift and the ground-based SARA telescopes are employed to provide magnitudes in the uvw 2 , uvm 2 , uvw 1 , u , b , v , g ′ , r ′ , i ′ , and z ′ filters. We observe 60 BL Lacs and report reliable redshift upper limits for 41 of them. We discover three new high-z BL Lacs (z > 1.3) at redshifts of 1.74 − 0.08 + 0.05 , 1.88 − 0.03 + 0.07 , and 2.10 − 0.04 + 0.03 , bringing the number of high-z BL Lacs found by this method up to 19. Discussions are made on the implications for the blazar sequence, the Fermi blazar divide, and the gamma-ray horizon based on an analysis of the 4LAC catalog and all high-z BL Lacs found with the photo-z technique.

Gas Accretion Traced by Blue-Dominated Lyα Emission and Redshifted UV Absorption Lines in Protocluster Galaxies at z = 2.3 from the KBSS-KCWI Survey

Abstract:Ly{\alpha} emission with a dominant blueshifted peak can probe gas flowing through the circumgalactic medium as it accretes onto galaxies and fuels new star formation, although it has seldom actually been observed. Here we present new Keck Cosmic Web Imager observations of the extended Ly{\alpha} halos surrounding Q1700-BX710 and Q1700-BX711, a pair of UV continuum-selected Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) galaxies at z = 2.3 in the HS1700+643 protocluster. We find that BX710 and BX711's Ly{\alpha} halos are aligned with a large-scale galaxy filament consisting of thirteen spectroscopically identified protocluster galaxies. By measuring the peak separation and blue-to-red peak flux ratio of the Ly{\alpha} emission profiles throughout these galaxies' Ly{\alpha} halos, we have obtained measurements of their spatially varying velocity structure. The prevalence of blue-dominated Ly{\alpha} emission profiles throughout BX711's Ly{\alpha} halo suggests actively accreting gas. We fit a clumpy, multiphase Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer model which assumes a radially varying clump velocity to the spatially resolved Ly{\alpha} emission throughout BX710 and BX711's Ly{\alpha} halos and simultaneously fit these galaxies' average down-the-barrel UV absorption profile with a radially varying velocity model. The results of these models are consistent with a combination of HI and higher-metallicity gas accretion for both galaxies, especially BX711, which exhibits inflow-driven kinematics throughout most of its Ly{\alpha} halo. We consider various accretion scenarios to explain these findings, including accretion of metal-enriched gas from the cosmic web, galaxy interactions, and recycled gas from the circumgalactic medium, all of which are compatible with our current observations.

A Submillimeter and Radio Survey of Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies: A Glimpse into the Future of Star Formation Studies

Abstract:We present the first comprehensive search for submillimeter and radio emission from the host galaxies of twenty well-localized gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). With the exception of a single source, all observations were undertaken months to years after the GRB explosions to ensure negligible contamination from the afterglows. We detect the host galaxy of GRB 000418 in both the sub-mm and radio, and the host galaxy of GRB 000210 only in the sub-mm. These observations, in conjunction with the previous detections of the host galaxies of GRB 980703 and GRB 010222, indicate that about 20% of GRB host galaxies are ultra-luminous and have star formation rates of about 500 M_sun/yr. As an ensemble, the non-detected hosts have a star formation rate of about 100 M_sun/yr (5-sigma) based on their radio emission. The detected and ensemble star formation rates exceed the optical values by an order of magnitude, indicating significant dust obscuration. In the same vein, the ratio of bolometric dust luminosity to UV luminosity for the hosts detected in the sub-mm and radio ranges from 20-800, and follows the known trend of increasing obscuration with increasing bolometric luminosity. We also show that, both as a sample and individually, the GRB host galaxies have bluer R-K colors as compared with galaxies selected in the sub-mm in the same redshift range. This possibly indicates that the stellar populations in the GRB hosts are on average younger, supporting the massive stellar progenitor scenario for GRBs, but it is also possible that GRB hosts are on average less dusty.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Observations of high-redshift quasars frequently promote suggestions of large black hole masses, whose presence so early in cosmic time is not easily explicable. I consider the parallel with ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) – now known to be stellar-mass black hole (and neutron star) binaries apparently radiating far above their Eddington luminosities LEdd. The true luminosity in ULXs is actually only of order LEdd, for stellar-mass accretors, but has a very anisotropic (‘beamed’) component, plus a near-isotropic component of similar luminosity but much lower specific intensity. Observers viewing ULXs from within the beam but assuming spherical symmetry deduce a luminosity ≫LEdd. These features appear because the accretors are fed mass at highly super-Eddington rates, most of it expelled in high-speed (v > 0.2c) outflows from the accretion disc. I show that in similarly beamed AGN, emission-line properties would be essentially the same as in unbeamed sources, but standard virial mass indicators unusable because velocity widths are dominated by the outflows, not bound motions about the black holes. In an ensemble of this kind the apparently most luminous systems are always the most distant, but have the lowest black hole masses. Interpreting observations of this ensemble without knowing that they are beamed leads instead to very high black hole mass estimates. The analogy with ULXs therefore suggests that high-redshift quasars might actually have central black hole masses which could have grown from stellar values within the lookback time. I consider how one might test these ideas observationally.

Holographic Quantum-Foam Blurring, and Localization of Gamma-Ray Burst GRB221009A

Abstract:Gamma-ray burst GRB221009A was of unprecedented brightness in gamma-rays and X-rays, and through to the far ultraviolet, allowing for identification within a host galaxy at redshift z=0.151 by multiple space and ground-based optical/near-infrared telescopes and enabling a first association - via cosmic-ray air-shower events - with a photon of 251 TeV. That is in direct tension with a potentially observable phenomenon of quantum gravity (QG), where spacetime "foaminess" accumulates in wavefronts propagating cosmological distances, and at high-enough energy could render distant yet bright pointlike objects invisible, by effectively spreading their photons out over the whole sky. But this effect would not result in photon loss, so it remains distinct from any absorption by extragalactic background light. A simple multiwavelength average of foam-induced blurring is described, analogous to atmospheric seeing from the ground. When scaled within the fields of view for the Fermi and Swift instruments, it fits all z<5 GRB angular-resolution data of 10 MeV or any lesser peak energy and can still be consistent with the highest-energy localization of GRB221009A: a limiting bound of about 1 degree is in agreement with a holographic QG-favored formulation.
