Abstract:We have measured the linear thermal expansion and magnetostriction of the Ising antiferromagnet TbNi2Ge2 along its c-axis from room temperature to 2 K and in magnetic fields to 14 T. We find a magnetic phase diagram that agrees with earlier work and estimate aspects of its uniaxial pressure dependence. We also find a new high field feature near 10 T which may signal the onset of an additional field-induced phase.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the linear thermal expansion and magnetostriction characteristics of the Ising antiferromagnet TbNi₂Ge₂ under different temperature and magnetic field conditions. Specifically, the author experimentally measured the linear thermal expansion and magnetostriction of TbNi₂Ge₂ along its c - axis direction to explore its magnetic phase diagram under low - temperature (from room temperature to 2 K) and high - magnetic - field (up to 14 T) conditions and estimate the effect of uniaxial pressure on its phase transition. In addition, a new high - field feature was also discovered in the study, which may indicate the existence of an additional field - induced phase. ### Main research contents: 1. **Linear thermal expansion measurement**: The linear thermal expansion of TbNi₂Ge₂ along the c - axis direction was studied, especially the changes at the phase transition temperatures \( T_N \) and \( T_t \), which are related to the crystal - field effect. 2. **Magnetostriction measurement**: At a temperature of 2 K, the magnetostriction of TbNi₂Ge₂ along the c - axis direction was measured, and a series of magnetic phase transitions were observed, especially a new feature at about 10 T. 3. **Phase diagram analysis**: Combining the existing research results, the magnetic phase diagram of TbNi₂Ge₂ was drawn, and the effect of uniaxial pressure on the phase transition temperature was explored. 4. **New phase transition feature**: A new feature was observed near 10 T, which may be due to a new field - induced phase transition, but further research is needed to confirm its nature. ### Key formulas: 1. **Ehrenfest relation**: \[ \left(\frac{\partial T}{\partial P_c}\right)_N=\frac{V_M\Delta\alpha}{\Delta C_p} \] where \( P_c \) is the uniaxial pressure along the c - axis, \( V_M \) is the molar volume, \( \Delta\alpha \) is the jump in the thermal expansion coefficient, and \( \Delta C_p \) is the jump in the molar specific heat capacity. 2. **Clausius - Clapeyron equation**: \[ \left(\frac{\partial P}{\partial T}\right)_t\approx\frac{V_M\Delta(\Delta L / L)}{\Delta S} \] where \( \Delta(\Delta L / L) \) is the jump in the length change rate during the phase transition, and \( \Delta S \) is the jump in the molar entropy during the phase transition. ### Conclusion: The author confirmed the magnetic phase diagram of TbNi₂Ge₂ through experimental data and discovered a new high - field feature, which may indicate a new field - induced phase. In addition, through the analysis of thermal expansion and magnetostriction data, the effect of uniaxial pressure on the phase transition temperature was estimated. These results provide important experimental basis for further understanding the magnetic behavior of TbNi₂Ge₂.
