Abstract:The search for the critical point of QCD in heavy-ion collision experiments has sparked enormous interest with the completion of phase I of the RHIC beam energy scan. Here, I review the basics of the thermodynamics of the QCD phase transition and its implications for experimental multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. Several sources of noncritical fluctuations impact the observables and need to be understood in addition to the critical phenomena. Recent progress has been made in dynamical modeling of critical fluctuations, which ultimately is indispensable to understand potential signals of the QCD critical point in heavy-ion collision.

Abstract:Recent theoretical investigations have unveiled a rich structure in the quantum chromodynamics phase diagram, which consists of quark-gluon plasma and the hadronic phases but also supports the existence of a crossover transition ending at a critical end point (CEP). We find a too large variation in the determination of the coordinates of the CEP in the temperature (T) baryon chemical potential (μB) plane; and, therefore, its identification in the current heavy-ion experiments becomes debatable. Here we use an equation of state for a deconfined quark-gluon plasma using a thermodynamically-consistent quasiparticle model involving noninteracting quarks and gluons having thermal masses. We further use a thermodynamically-consistent excluded-volume model for the hadron gas, which was recently proposed by us. Using these equations of state, a first-order deconfining phase transition is constructed using Gibbs’s criteria. This leads to an interesting finding that the phase transition line ends at a critical end point (CEP) beyond which a crossover region exists. Using our thermal hadron gas model, we obtain a chemical freeze out curve, and we find that the CEP lies in close proximity to this curve as proposed by some authors. The coordinates of CEP are found to lie within the reach of Relativistic heavy-ion collider experiment.

Locating the QCD critical point from first principles through contours of constant entropy density

Abstract:We propose a new method to investigate the existence and location of the conjectured high-temperature critical point of strongly interacting matter via contours of constant entropy density. By approximating these lines as a power series in the baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$, one can extrapolate them from first-principle results at zero net-baryon density, and use them to locate the QCD critical point, including the associated first-order and spinodal lines. As a proof of principle, we employ currently available continuum-extrapolated first-principle results from the Wuppertal--Budapest collaboration to find a critical point at a temperature and a baryon chemical potential of $T_c = 114.3 \pm 6.9$ MeV and $\mu_{B,c} = 602.1 \pm 62.1$ MeV, respectively. We advocate for a more precise determination of the required expansion coefficients via lattice QCD simulations as a means of pinpointing the location of the critical endpoint in the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter.

Abstract:This article reviews recent progress of QCD phase structure, including color superconductor at high baryon density and strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) at high temperature created through relativistic heavy ion collision. A brief overview is given on the discovery of sQGP at RHIC. The possibility of locating the critical end point (CEP) from the property of bulk viscosity over entropy density is discussed. For the phase structure at high baryon density, the status of the unconventional color superconducting phase with mismatched pairing is reviewed. The chromomagnetic instability, Sarma instability and Higgs instability in the gapless color superconducting phase are clarified.

Abstract:I first sketch recent developments concerning the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter as a function of temperature and baryon density, obtained using a model for two-flavor QCD in which the interaction between quarks is modelled on that induced by instantons. The phase diagram has a chiral symmetry breaking vacuum, a color superconductor phase at high density, and a mixed phase in between which can describe nuclear matter if the high density regions in the mixed phase form droplets. This is amusingly similar to the phase diagram of the copper oxide superconductors, although their critical temperatures are smaller by a factor of about 10^{-9} and their mixed phase seems to form stripes, rather than droplets. This and other approaches to QCD with two massless quarks suggests the existence of a tricritical point on the boundary of the phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. In QCD with massive quarks there is then a critical point at the end of a first order transition line. We discuss possible experimental signatures of this point, which provide information about its location and properties. We propose a combination of event-by-event observables, including suppressed fluctuations in T and mu and, simultaneously, enhanced fluctuations in the multiplicity of soft pions. As a control parameter (like the collision energy) is varied, the fluctuations of appropriate event-by-event observables should therefore have minima or maxima. Experimental detection of these non-monotonic signatures would confirm that the matter was initially above the chiral phase transition, increasing our confidence in the interpretation of monotonic changes in other observables, and would teach us much about the QCD phase diagram.
Critical Point on the QCD Deconfining Phase Boundary

Abstract:Ambiguities regarding the physics and the existence of the critical point (CP) on the QCD phase boundary still exist and the mist regarding the conjectured QCD phase boundary has not yet cleared. In this paper we extend our earlier study where we constructed a deconfining phase boundary using Gibbs' equilibrium conditions after using a quasiparticle equation of state (EOS) for quark gluon plasma (QGP) and an excluded volume EOS for the hadron gas (HG) and find the presence of a critical point on this phase boundary where the first order phase transition terminates. In this paper, we plot the difference in the normalized entropy density ($s/T^{3}$) between HG and QGP phases along the deconfining phase boundary and find that it vanishes at CP. Further we have shown the variation of the square of speed of sound ($c_{s}^{2}$) for the HG and QGP separately and find that the difference ($\Delta c_{s}^{2}$) between them along the deconfining phase boundary again vanishes at the CP of the boundary. We also plot the variation of shear viscosity to entropy density ratio ($\eta/s$) in HG as well as in QGP phases separately with respect to temperature at different baryonic chemical potential ($\mu_{B}$). The presence of a cusp like structure in $\eta/s$ again confirms the existence of CP on the deconfining phase boundary as predicted by some authors. These studies thus firmly indicate the precise location of CP as a second order phase transition point.

Abstract:QCD critical point is a landmark region in the QCD phase diagram outlined by temperature as a function of baryon chemical potential. To the right of this second-order phase transition point, one expects first order quark-hadron phase transition boundary, towards the left a crossover region, top of it lies the quark gluon plasma phase and below it the hadronic phase. Hence locating the QCD critical point through relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments is an active area of research. Cumulants of conserved quantities in strong interaction, such as net-baryon, net-charge, and net-strangeness, are suggested to be sensitive to the physics of QCD critical point and are therefore useful observables in the study of the phase transition between quark-gluon plasma and hadronic matter. We review the experimental status of the search for the QCD critical point via the measurements of cumulants of net-particle distributions in heavy ion collisions. We discuss various experimental challenges and associated corrections in such fluctuation measurements. We also comment on the physics implications of the measurements by comparing them with theoretical calculations. This is followed by a discussion on future experiments and measurements related to high baryonic density QCD matter.

Abstract:We report the latest results on the search for the QCD critical point in the QCD phase diagram through high energy heavy-ion collisions. The measurements discussed are based on the higher moments of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in heavy-ion collisions. A non-monotonic variation in the product of kurtosis times the variance of the net-proton distribution is observed as a function of the collision energy with 3$\sigma$ significance. We also discuss the results of the thermal model in explaining the measured particle yield ratios in heavy-ion collisions and comparison of the different variants of hardon resonance gas model calculation to the data on higher moments of net-proton distributions. We end with a note that the upcoming programs in high baryon density regime at various experimental facilities will complete the search for the QCD critical point through heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:The significance of the question of the order of the phase transition in QCD, and recent evidence that real-world QCD is probably close to having a single second order transition as a function of temperature, is reviewed. Although this circumstance seems to remove the possibility that the QCD transition during the big bang might have had spectacular cosmological consequences, there is some good news: it allows highly non-trivial yet reliable quantitative predictions to be made for the behavior near the transition. These predictions can be tested in numerical simulations and perhaps even eventually in heavy ion collisions. The present paper is a very elementary discussion of the relevant concepts, meant to be an accessible introduction for those innocent of the renormalization group approach to critical phenomena and/or the details of QCD.

Abstract:Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram is usually plotted as temperature (T) versus the chemical potential associated with the conserved baryon number (\mu_{B}). Two fundamental properties of QCD, related to confinement and chiral symmetry, allows for two corresponding phase transitions when T and \mu_{B} are varied. Theoretically the phase diagram is explored through non-perturbative QCD calculations on lattice. The energy scale for the phase diagram (\Lambda_{QCD} ~ 200 MeV) is such that it can be explored experimentally by colliding nuclei at varying beam energies in the laboratory. In this paper we review some aspects of the QCD phase structure as explored through the experimental studies using high energy nuclear collisions. Specifically, we discuss three observations related to the formation of a strongly coupled plasma of quarks and gluons in the collisions, experimental search for the QCD critical point on the phase diagram and freeze-out properties of the hadronic phase.

Chiral QCD phase in equilibrium with Hadron Gas and the location of the critical point

Abstract:We develop a description of the equation of state of QCD matter with restored chiral symmetry, which is in thermal and chemical equilibrium with the hadronic phase. The hadron gas is described with thermodynamically consistent volume corrections. The chiral phase is composed of a set of few quark condensates, each of which corresponds to a family of hadrons with specific quark content. On the boundary between the two phases we apply the requirement of conservation of particle numbers per family. We use lattice calculations for temperatures below the transition curve to determine hadronic volumes. We find that the pion system plays decisive role in the shift of the transition from higher order (crossover) to first order. For four volume models we calculate the location of the critical point as function of critical temperature $T_c$ at vanishing baryon density. Particularly, if we additionally impose the equality between the densities of quarks contained in mesons and baryons, we find a critical point residing in the interval of baryon chemical potential $\mu_B \simeq$ 233-267 MeV and of temperature $T \simeq$ 153-158 MeV.

Abstract:I review arguments for the existence of a critical point E in the QCD phase diagram as a function of temperature T and baryon chemical potential \mu. I describe how heavy ion collision experiments at the SPS and RHIC can discover the tell-tale signatures of such a critical point, thus mapping this region of the QCD phase diagram. I contrast the different ways in which the matter produced in a heavy ion collision can be driven out of equilibrium: quenching out of equilibrium (possible, but not guaranteed, if the transition region is traversed at \mu << \mu_E) vs. slowing out of equilibrium (guaranteed for \mu \sim \mu_E) vs. bubbling out of equilibrium (possible, but not guaranteed, for \mu >> \mu_E). Quenching or bubbling create and amplify distinct, detectable, non-gaussian fluctuations. In contrast, slowing out of equilibrium reduces the magnitude of the specific, detectable, gaussian fluctuations which signal the presence of the critical point.

Abstract:I make a brief review about the QCD phases and the equation of state inferred from the neutron star data. Along the temperature axis at low baryon density, the QCD phase transition is a smooth crossover, and it is a natural extension of our imagination to postulate a similar crossover along the density axis at low temperature. Even without phase transitions, the inferred thermodynamic properties of neutron star matter turn out to be highly nontrivial already at twice of the nuclear saturation density. I also give some discussions about the substantiation of quark matter by means of the gravitational wave signals including the multi-messenger prospect.

On the QCD critical point, Lee-Yang edge singularities and Pade resummations

Abstract:We analyze the trajectory of the Lee-Yang edge singularities of the QCD equation of state in the complex baryon chemical potential ($\mu_B$) plane for different values of the temperature by using the recent lattice results for the Taylor expansion coefficients up to eighth order in $\mu_B$ and various resummation techniques that blend in Pade expansions and conformal maps. By extrapolating from this information, we estimate for the location of the QCD critical point, $ T_c \approx 100$ MeV, $\mu_c \approx 580$ MeV. We also estimate the crossover slope at the critical point to be $\alpha_1 \approx 9^\circ$ and further constrain the non-universal mapping parameters between the three dimensional Ising model and QCD equations of state.

Abstract:We use the available two different self-consistent formulations of quasiparticle models and extend their applications for the description of quark gluon plasma (QGP) at non-vanishing baryon chemical potentials. The thermodynamical quantities calculated from these models are compared with the values obtained from lattice simulations and a good agreement between theoretical calculations and lattice QCD data suggests that the values of the parameters used in the paper are consistent. A new equation of state (EOS) for a gas of extended baryons and pointlike mesons is presented here which incorporates the repulsive hard-core interactions arising due to geometrical size of baryons. A first order deconfining phase transition is constructed using Gibb's equilibrium criteria between the hadron gas EOS and quasiparticle model EOS for the weakly interacting quark matter. This leads to an interesting finding that the phase transition line ends at a critical end point beyond which a crossover region exists in the phase diagram.

Abstract:In recent years there has been much progress on the investigation of the QCD phase diagram with lattice QCD simulations. In this review we focus on the developments in the last two years. Especially the addition of external influences or new parameter ranges yields an increasing number of interesting results. We discuss the progress for small, finite densities from both extrapolation-based methods (Taylor expansion and analytic continuation for imaginary chemical potential) and complex Langevin simulations, for heavy quark bound states (quarkonium), the dependence on the quark masses (Columbia plot) and the influence of a magnetic field. Many of these conditions are relevant for the understanding of both the QCD transition in the early universe and heavy ion collision experiments, which are conducted for example at the LHC and RHIC.

Abstract:It is argued that in relativistic heavy ion collisions, due to limited size of the formed matter, the reliable criterion of critical point is finite-size scaling, rather than non-monotonous behavior of observable. How to locate critical point by finite-size scaling is proposed. The data of $\pt$ correlation from RHIC/STAR are analyzed. Critical points are likely observed around $\sqrt s =62$ and 200 GeV. They could be, respectively, the transition of deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration predicted by lattice-QCD. Further confirmation with other observable and energies is suggested.
Searching for the QCD critical point using Lee-Yang edge singularities

Abstract:Using $N_f=2+1$ QCD calculations at physical quark mass and purely imaginary baryon chemical potential, we locate Lee-Yang edge singularities in the complex chemical potential plane. These singularities have been obtained by the multi-point Padé approach applied to the net baryon number density. We recently showed that singularities extracted with this approach are consistent with universal scaling near the Roberge-Weiss transition. Here we study the universal scaling of these singularities in the vicinity of the QCD critical endpoint. Making use of an appropriate scaling ansatz, we extrapolate these singularities on $N_\tau=6$ and $N_\tau=8$ lattices towards the real axis to estimate the position of a possible QCD critical point. We find an approach toward the real axis with decreasing temperature. We compare this estimate with a HotQCD estimate obtained from poles of a [4,4]-Padé resummation of the eighth-order Taylor expansion of the QCD pressure.
