Abstract:We review the present status of our research and understanding regarding the dynamics and the statistical properties of earthquakes, mainly from a statistical physical viewpoint. Emphasis is put both on the physics of friction and fracture, which provides a "microscopic" basis of our understanding of an earthquake instability, and on the statistical physical modelling of earthquakes, which provides "macroscopic" aspects of such phenomena. Recent numerical results on several representative models are reviewed, with attention to both their "critical" and "characteristic" properties. We highlight some of relevant notions and related issues, including the origin of power-laws often observed in statistical properties of earthquakes, apparently contrasting features of characteristic earthquakes or asperities, the nature of precursory phenomena and nucleation processes, the origin of slow earthquakes, etc.

Abstract:We review the developments of the statistical physics of fracture and earthquake over the last four decades. We argue that major progress has been made in this field and that the key concepts should now become integral part of the (under-) graduate level text books in condensed matter physics. For arguing in favor of this, we compare the development (citations) with the same for some other related topics in condensed matter, for which Nobel prizes have already been awarded.

Abstract:Experiments on fracture surface morphologies offer increasing amounts of data that can be analyzed using methods of statistical physics. One finds scaling exponents associated with correlation and structure functions, indicating a rich phenomenology of anomalous scaling. We argue that traditional models of fracture fail to reproduce this rich phenomenology and new ideas and concepts are called for. We present some recent models that introduce the effects of deviations from homogeneous linear elasticity theory on the morphology of fracture surfaces, succeeding to reproduce the multiscaling phenomenology at least in 1+1 dimensions. For surfaces in 2+1 dimensions we introduce novel methods of analysis based on projecting the data on the irreducible representations of the SO(2) symmetry group. It appears that this approach organizes effectively the rich scaling properties. We end up with the proposition of new experiments in which the rotational symmetry is not broken, such that the scaling properties should be particularly simple.

Abstract:This paper presents a dynamic damage model for predicting fracture and fragmentation of brittle materials subjected to loads with high loading rates. This model is based on the mechanics of microcrack nucleation, growth, and coalescence to formulate the evolution of damage. The damage in the model is assumed to be isotropic and is a function of time and applied stress. The model provides a direct, explicit, and quantitative method to determine the rate-dependent fracture stress and fragment size generated by crack coalescence in the dynamic fragmentation process. It considers the experimental facts that a brittle material does not fail if the applied stress is lower than its static strength and certain time duration is needed for fracture to take place when it is subjected to a stress higher than its static strength. Comparisons between theoretical predictions and test data are made and shown to be in good agreement.

Ensembles are obtained by dividing a huge rock sample into many mesoscopic volumes. Because rocks are a disordered collection of grains in cohesive contact, we expect that once shear strain is applied and cracks begin to arrive in the system, the mesoscopic volumes will have a wide distribution of different crack states. These mesoscopic volumes are the members of our ensembles. We determine the probability of observing a mesoscopic volume to be in a given crack state by maximizing Shannon's measure of the emergent-crack disorder subject to constraints coming from the energy balance of brittle fracture. The laws of thermodynamics, the partition function, and the quantification of temperature are obtained for such cracking systems.

Abstract:Power law distributed fluctuations are known to accompany terminal failure in disordered brittle solids. The associated intermittent scale-free behavior is of interest from the fundamental point of view as it emerges universally from an intricate interplay of threshold-type nonlinearity, quenched disorder, and long-range interactions. We use the simplest mean-field description of such systems to show that they can be expected to undergo a transition between brittle and quasi-brittle (ductile) responses. While the former is characterized by a power law distribution of avalanches, in the latter, the statistics of avalanches is predominantly Gaussian. The realization of a particular regime depends on the variance of disorder and the effective rigidity represented by a combination of elastic moduli. We argue that the robust criticality, as in the cases of earthquakes and collapsing porous materials, indicates the self-tuning of the system towards the boundary separating brittle and ductile regimes.

Abstract:Our understanding of earthquakes is based on the theory of plate tectonics. Earthquake dynamics is the study of the interactions of plates (solid disjoint parts of the lithosphere) which produce seismic activity. Over the last about fifty years many models have come up which try to simulate seismic activity by mimicking plate plate interactions. The validity of a given model is subject to the compliance of the synthetic seismic activity it produces to the well known empirical laws which describe the statistical features of observed seismic activity. Here we present a review of two such models of earthquake dynamics with main focus on a relatively new model namely The Two Fractal Overlap Model.

Abstract:We review statistical theories and numerical methods employed to consider the sample size dependence of the failure strength distribution of disordered materials. We first overview the analytical predictions of extreme value statistics and fiber bundle models and discuss their limitations. Next, we review energetic and geometric approaches to fracture size effects for specimens with a flaw. Finally, we overview the numerical simulations of lattice models and compare with theoretical models.

Abstract:Statistical models are essential to get a better understanding of the role of disorder in brittle disordered solids. Fiber bundle models play a special role as a paradigm, with a very good balance of simplicity and non-trivial effects. We introduce here a variant of the fiber bundle model where the load is transferred among the fibers through a very compliant membrane. This Soft Membrane fiber bundle mode reduces to the classical Local Load Sharing fiber bundle model in 1D. Highlighting the continuum limit of the model allows to compute an equivalent toughness for the fiber bundle and hence discuss nucleation of a critical defect. The computation of the toughness allows for drawing a simple connection with crack front propagation (depinning) models.

Abstract:Brittle fracture of disordered media are studied using Monte Carlo simulations in both two and three dimensions. Elastic and superelastic percolation networks with central and bond-bending forces are used as models of disordered media. We find that the distribution of fracture strength in a solid with broadly distributed microscopic heterogeneities, and in randomly reinforced materials, is adequately described by the classical Weibull distribution, rather than the recently proposed Gumbel distribution. Abstract:The behavior of fractures in 2D brittle disordered materials results from the competition between the microstructural disorder that roughens cracks and the material elasticity that straightens them. The experimental fracture surfaces left behind are generally scale invariant and their complex geometry are still largely unexplained. Here, this issue is addressed numerically using the boundary element method that predicts incrementally the trajectory followed by cracks in an infinite elastic medium with a heterogeneous field of fracture energy. The predicted fracture profiles are characterized using their height-height correlation function and show scale invariant properties. In particular, simulated cracks are shown to follow a random walk with roughness exponent , irrespective of the level of microstructural disorder, indicating that the crack behavior is neither persistent nor anti-persistent, but instead, that the orientation of the next propagation increment is chosen randomly, independently of the past trajectory. This behavior is then interpreted from fracture mechanics calculations that show that the restoring force emerging from elasticity that generally straightens cracks vanishes in the limit of large specimens with respect to the characteristic size of the material heterogeneity. Our findings shed light on some experimental fracture patterns recently reported and suggests an explanation for the observation of two different types of fracture morphologies in 2D disordered brittle solids.

Damage spreading in quasi-brittle disordered solids: II. What the statistics of precursors teach us about compressive failure

Abstract:We investigate numerically and theoretically the precursory intermittent activity characterizing the preliminary phase of damage accumulation prior to failure of quasi-brittle solids. We use a minimal but thermodynamically consistent model of damage growth and localization developed by Berthier et al. (2017). The approach accounts for both microstructural disorder and non-local interactions and permits inferring a complete scaling description of the spatio-temporal structure of failure precursors. By developing a theoretical model of damage growth in disordered elasto-damageable specimen, we demonstrate that these scaling relations emerge from the physics of elastic manifolds driven in disordered media, while the divergence of these quantities close to failure is reminiscent of the loss of stability of the specimen at the localization threshold. Our study sorts out a long-standing debate on the nature of the compressive failure point and the origin of the universal statistics of the precursors preceding it. Our analysis rules out a critical-point scenario in which the divergence of the precursor size close to failure is signature of a second-order phase transition governed by the microstructural disorder. Instead, we show that while the jerky evolution of damage prior to failure results from the presence of material disorder, the latter does not significantly change the nature of the localization process, which is an instability well described by standard bifurcation theory of homogeneous systems. Finally, we harness our detailed understanding of the precursory statistics to design a methodology to estimate the residual lifetime of a structure from the statistical analysis of precursors. This method relevant for structural health monitoring is shown to perform rather accurately on our data.

Elastic instability behind brittle fracture

Abstract:We argue that nucleation of brittle cracks in initially flawless soft elastic solids is preceded by a nonlinear elastic instability, which cannot be captured without accounting for geometrical precise description of finite elastic deformation. As a prototypical problem we consider a homogeneous elastic body subjected to tension and assume that it is weakened by the presence of a free surface which then serves as a site of crack nucleation. We show that in this maximally simplified setting, brittle fracture emerges from a symmetry breaking elastic instability activated by softening and involving large elastic rotations. The implied bifurcation of the homogeneous elastic equilibrium is highly unconventional for nonlinear elasticity as it exhibits an extraordinary sensitivity to geometry, reminiscent of the transition to turbulence in fluids. We trace the post-bifurcational development of this instability beyond the limits of applicability of scale free continuum elasticity and use a phase-field approach to capture the scale dependent sub-continuum strain localization, signaling the formation of actual cracks.

Abstract:It has long been conjectured that (rapid) fracture propagation dynamics in materials and turbulent motion of fluids are two manifestations of the same physical process. The universality class of turbulence (Kolmogorov dispersion in particular) had been conjectured to be identifiable with the Flory statistics for linear polymers (self-avoiding walks on lattices). These help us to relate fracture statistics to those of linear polymers (Flory statistics). The statistics of fracture in the Fiber Bundle Model (FBM) are now well studied and many exact results are now available for the equal load-sharing (ELS) scheme. Yet, the correlation length exponent in this model was missing and we show here how the correspondence between fracture statistics and the Flory mapping of Kolmogorov statistics for turbulence helps us to make a conjecture about the value of the correlation length exponent for fracture in the ELS limit of FBM, and also about the upper critical dimension. Besides, the fracture avalanche size exponent values in lower dimensions (as estimated from such mapping to Flory statistics) also compare well with the observations.

This book introduces these sophisticated methods in a straightforward manner. The methods are applied to several important phenomena of solid state physics which impinge on fracture mechanics: adhesion, defect nucleation and growth, dislocation emission, sintering, the electron beam effect and fractal cracks. The book shows how the mathematical models for such processes may be set up, and how the equations so formulated may be solved and interpreted. The many open problems which are encountered will provide topics for MSc and PhD theses in fracture mechanics, and in theoretical and experimental physics. As a supplementary text, the book can be used in graduate level courses on fracture mechanics, solid matter physics, and mechanics of solids, or in a special course on the application of fracture mechanics methods in solid matter physics.

Abstract:We introduce a lattice model able to describe damage and yielding in heterogeneous materials ranging from brittle to ductile ones. Ductile fracture surfaces, obtained when the system breaks once the strain is completely localized, are shown to correspond to minimum energy surfaces. The similarity of the resulting fracture paths to the limits of brittle fracture or minimum energy surfaces is quantified. The model exhibits a smooth transition from brittleness to ductility. The dynamics of yielding exhibits avalanches with a power-law distribution.

Abstract:Brittle fractures of inhomogeneous materials like rocks, concrete, or ceramics are of two types: Nominally brittle and driven by the propagation of a single dominant crack or quasi-brittle and resulting from the accumulation of many microcracks. The latter goes along with acoustic noise, whose analysis has revealed that events form aftershock sequences obeying characteristic laws reminiscent of those in seismology. Yet, their origin lacks explanation. Here we show that such a statistical organization is not only specific to the multi-cracking situations of quasi-brittle failure and seismology, but also rules the acoustic events produced by a propagating crack. This simpler situation has permitted us to relate these laws to the overall scale-free distribution of inter-event time and energy and to uncover their selection by the crack speed. These results provide a comprehensive picture of how acoustic events are organized upon material failure in the most fundamental of fracture states: single propagating cracks.

Abstract:We formulate a nonlocal cohesive model for calculating the deformation state inside a cracking body. In this model a more complete set of physical properties including elastic and softening behavior are assigned to each point in the medium. We work within the small deformation setting and use the peridynamic formulation. Here strains are calculated as difference quotients. The constitutive relation is given by a nonlocal cohesive law relating force to strain. At each instant of the evolution we identify a process zone where strains lie above a threshold value. Perturbation analysis shows that jump discontinuities within the process zone can become unstable and grow. We derive an explicit inequality that shows that the size of the process zone is controlled by the ratio given by the length scale of nonlocal interaction divided by the characteristic dimension of the sample. The process zone is shown to concentrate on a set of zero volume in the limit where the length scale of nonlocal interaction vanishes with respect to the size of the domain. In this limit the dynamic evolution is seen to have bounded linear elastic energy and Griffith surface energy. The limit dynamics corresponds to the simultaneous evolution of linear elastic displacement and the fracture set across which the displacement is discontinuous. We conclude illustrating how the approach developed here can be applied to limits of dynamics associated with other energies that $\Gamma$- converge to the Griffith fracture energy.

Elastic interactions in damage models of brittle failure

Abstract:The failure of brittle solids involves, before macroscopic rupture, power-law distributed avalanches of local rupture events whereby microcracks nucleate and grow, which are also observed in for an elastic interface evolving in a non-homogeneous medium. For this reason, it is tempting to relate failure to the depinning of an elastic interface. Here we compute the elastic kernel of the interface representing the damage field of a brittle solid. In the case of a damage model of rupture under compression, which implements the Mohr-Coulomb criterion at the local scale, we show that the elastic kernel is unstable, and hence is very different from the kernels of usual interfaces. We show that the unstable modes are responsible for the localization of damage along a macroscopic fault observed in numerical simulations. At low disorder, the most unstable mode gives the orientation of the macroscopic fault that we measure in numerical simulations. The orientation of the fault changes when the level of disorder is increased, suggesting a complex interplay of the unstable modes and the disorder.
