Our method relies on the representation of the Laplace operator as the direct sum of half-line Jacobi matrices whose entries are non-degenerate, independent, identically distributed random variables with singular distributions.

Abstract:We study Anderson localization in disordered tight-binding models on hyperbolic lattices. Such lattices are geometries intermediate between ordinary two-dimensional crystalline lattices, which localize at infinitesimal disorder, and Bethe lattices, which localize at strong disorder. Using state-of-the-art computational group theory methods to create large systems, we approximate the thermodynamic limit through appropriate periodic boundary conditions and numerically demonstrate the existence of an Anderson localization transition on the $\{8,3\}$ and $\{8,8\}$ lattices. We find unusually large critical disorder strengths, determine critical exponents, and observe a strong finite-size effect in the level statistics.

Abstract:We consider a Hamiltonian given by the Laplacian plus a Bernoulli potential on the two dimensional lattice. We prove that, for energies sufficiently close to the edge of the spectrum, the resolvent on a large square is likely to decay exponentially. This implies almost sure Anderson localization for energies sufficiently close to the edge of the spectrum. Our proof follows the program of Bourgain–Kenig, using a new unique continuation result inspired by a Liouville theorem of Buhovsky–Logunov–Malinnikova–Sodin.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the Anderson model on the Bethe lattice, focusing on the localized regime. Employing the cavity approach, we derive compact expressions for the inverse participation ratios (IPRs) that are equivalent to those obtained using the supersymmetric formalism and naturally facilitate a highly efficient computational scheme. This method yields numerical results with unprecedented accuracy, even very close to the localization threshold. Our approach allows for high-precision validation of all theoretical predictions from the analytical solution, including the finite jump of the IPRs at the transition. Additionally, we reveal a singular behavior of the IPRs near the critical point that has not been previously reported in the literature. This singular behavior is further confirmed by the numerical solution of the non-linear $\sigma$ model on the Bethe lattice, which provides an effective description of Anderson localization.

Corrections to the Bethe lattice solution of Anderson localization

Abstract:We study numerically Anderson localization on lattices that are tree-like except for the presence of one loop of varying length $L$. The resulting expressions allow us to compute corrections to the Bethe lattice solution on i) Random-Regular-Graph (RRG) of finite size $N$ and ii) euclidean lattices in finite dimension. In the first case we show that the $1/N$ corrections to to the average values of observables such as the typical density of states and the inverse participation ratio have prefactors that diverge exponentially approaching the critical point, which explains the puzzling observation that the numerical simulations on finite RRGs deviate spectacularly from the expected asymptotic behavior. In the second case our results, combined with the $M$-layer expansion, predict that corrections destroy the exotic critical behavior of the Bethe lattice solution in any finite dimension, strengthening the suggestion that the upper critical dimension of Anderson localization is infinity. This approach opens the way to the computation of non-mean-field critical exponents by resumming the series of diverging diagrams through the same recipes of the field-theoretical perturbative expansion.

Localization of Lindbladian Fermions

Abstract:We study a Lindbladian generalization of the Anderson model of localization that describes disordered free fermions coupled to a disordered environment. From finite size scaling of both eigenvalue statistics and participation ratio, we identify localization transitions in both the non-Hermitian Lindbladian spectrum, which governs transient relaxation dynamics, and in the Hermitian stationary state density matrix. These localization transitions occur at different critical values of Hamiltonian and dissipative disorder strength, implying the existence of atypical phases with a mixture of localized and delocalized features. We find this phenomenon is robust to changes to the value of the dissipative spectral gap.

Abstract:We study the Localization game on locally finite graphs trees, where each of the countably many vertices have finite degree. In contrast to the finite case, we construct a locally finite tree with localization number $n$ for any choice of positive integer $n$. Our examples have uncountably many ends, and we show that this is necessary by proving that locally finite trees with finitely or countably many ends have localization number at most 2. Finally, as is the case for finite graphs, we prove that any locally finite graph contains a subdivision where one cop can capture the robber.

Abstract:We establish large sets of Anderson localized states for the quasi-periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb Z^d$, thus extending Anderson localization from the linear (cf. Bourgain [GAFA 17(3), 682--706, 2007]) to a nonlinear setting, and the random (cf. Bourgain-Wang [JEMS 10(1), 1--45, 2008]) to a deterministic setting. Among the main ingredients are a new Diophantine estimate of quasi-periodic functions in arbitrarily dimensional phase space, and the application of Bourgain's geometric lemma in [GAFA 17(3), 682--706, 2007].

Localization for random quasi-one-dimensional models

Abstract:In this paper we review results of Anderson localization for different random families of operators which enter in the framework of random quasi-one-dimensional models. We first recall what is Anderson localization from both physical and mathematical point of views. From the Anderson-Bernoulli conjecture in dimension 2 we justify the introduction of quasi-one-dimensional models. Then we present different types of these models : the Schr{ö}dinger type in the discrete and continuous cases, the unitary type, the Dirac type and the point-interactions type. In a second part we present tools coming from the study of dynamical systems in dimension one : the transfer matrices formalism, the Lyapunov exponents and the F{ü}rstenberg group. We then prove a criterion of localization for quasi-one-dimensional models of Schr{ö}dinger type involving only geometric and algebraic properties of the F{ü}rstenberg group. Then, in the last two sections, we review results of localization, first for Schr{ö}dinger type models and then for unitary type models. Each time, we reduce the question of localization to the study of the F{ü}rstenberg group and show how to use more and more refined algebraic criterions to prove the needed properties of this group. All the presented results for quasi-one-dimensional models of Schr{ö}dinger type include the case of Bernoulli randomness.

Abstract:We construct the generic phase diagrams encoding the topologically distinct localized and delocalized phases of noninteracting fermionic quasiparticles for any symmetry class from the tenfold way in one, two, and three dimensions. To this end, we start from a massive Dirac Hamiltonian perturbed by a generic disorder for any dimension of space and for any one of the ten symmetry classes from the tenfold way. The physics of Anderson localization is then encoded by a two-dimensional phase diagram that we deduce from the topology of the space of normalized Dirac masses. This approach agrees with previously known results and gives an alternative explanation for the even-odd effect in the one-dimensional chiral symmetry classes. We also give a qualitative explanation for the Gade singularity and Griffiths effects in the density of states using the first homotopy group of the normalized Dirac masses in two dimensions. Finally, this approach is used to analyze the stability of massless Dirac fermions on the surface of three-dimensional topological crystalline insulators.

Abstract:We study the Anderson model on the Bethe lattice by working directly with propagators at realenergies E . We introduce a novel criterion for the localization–delocalization transition based onthe stability of the population of the propagators, and show that it is consistent with the oneobtained through the study of the imaginary part of the self-energy. We present an accuratenumerical estimate of the transition point, as well as a concise proof of the asymptotic formula forthe critical disorder on lattices of large connectivity, as given in Anderson (1958 Phys. Rev . 1091492–505). We discuss how the forward approximation used in analytic treatments of localizationproblems fits into this scenario and how one can interpolate between it and the correct asymptoticanalysis.

Abstract:We discuss the dependence of the critical properties of the Anderson model on the dimension $d$ in the language of $\beta$-function and renormalization group recently introduced in Ref.[<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.14965" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.14965">arXiv:2306.14965</a>] in the context of Anderson transition on random regular graphs. We show how in the delocalized region, including the transition point, the one-parameter scaling part of the $\beta$-function for the fractal dimension $D_{1}$ evolves smoothly from its $d=2$ form, in which $\beta_2\leq 0$, to its $\beta_\infty\geq 0$ form, which is represented by the regular random graph (RRG) result. We show how the $\epsilon=d-2$ expansion and the $1/d$ expansion around the RRG result can be reconciled and how the initial part of a renormalization group trajectory governed by the irrelevant exponent $y$ depends on dimensionality. We also show how the irrelevant exponent emerges out of the high-gradient terms of expansion in the nonlinear sigma-model and put forward a conjecture about a lower bound for the fractal dimension. The framework introduced here may serve as a basis for investigations of disordered many-body systems and of more general non-equilibrium quantum systems.

Abstract:We consider a one-frequency, quasi-periodic, block Jacobi operator, whose blocks are generic matrix-valued analytic functions. We establish Anderson localization for this type of operator under the assumption that the coupling constant is large enough but independent of the frequency. This generalizes a result of J. Bourgain and S. Jitomirskaya on localization for band lattice, quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators.

Abstract:We study Anderson localization in graphene with short-range disorder using the real-space Kubo-Greenwood method implemented on graphics processing units. Two models of short-range disorder, namely, the Anderson on-site disorder model and the vacancy defect model, are considered. For graphene with Anderson disorder, localization lengths of quasi-one-dimensional systems with various disorder strengths, edge symmetries, and boundary conditions are calculated using the real-space Kubo-Greenwood formalism, showing excellent agreement with independent transfer matrix calculations and superior computational efficiency. Using these data, we demonstrate the applicability of the one-parameter scaling theory of localization length and propose an analytical expression for the scaling function, which provides a reliable method of computing the two-dimensional localization length. This method is found to be consistent with another widely used method which relates the two-dimensional localization length to the elastic mean free path and the semiclassical conductivity. Abnormal behavior at the charge neutrality point is identified and interpreted to be caused by finite-size effects when the system width is comparable to or smaller than the elastic mean free path. We also demonstrate the finite-size effect when calculating the two-dimensional conductivity in the localized regime and show that a renormalization group beta function consistent with the one-parameter scaling theory can be extracted numerically. For graphene with vacancy disorder, we show that the proposed scaling function of localization length also applies. Lastly, we discuss some ambiguities in calculating the semiclassical conductivity around the charge neutrality point due to the presence of resonant states.
Anderson localization in a correlated fermionic mixture

Abstract:A mixture of two fermionic species with different masses is studied in an optical lattice. The heavy fermions are subject only to thermal fluctuations, the light fermions also to quantum fluctuations. We derive the Ising-like distribution for the heavy atoms and study the localization properties of the light fermions numerically by a transfer-matrix method. In a two-dimensional system one-parameter scaling of the localization length is found with a transition from delocalized states at low temperatures to localized states at high temperature. The critical exponent of the localization length is $\nu\approx 0.88$.

Our approach combines probabilistic estimates from the Anderson model with the Craig–Wayne–Bourgain method for studying quasi-periodic solutions of nonlinear PDEs.

Higher-order localization landscape theory of Anderson localization

Abstract:For a Hamiltonian ${\hat H}$ containing a position-dependent (disordered) potential, we introduce a sequence of landscape functions $u_n(\mathbf{r})$ obeying ${\hat H} u_n(\mathbf{r}) = u_{n-1}(\mathbf{r})$ with $u_0(\mathbf{r}) = 1$. For $n \to \infty$, $1/v_n(\mathbf{r}) = u_{n-1}(\mathbf{r})/u_{n}(\mathbf{r})$ converges to the lowest eigenenergy $E_1$ of ${\hat H}$ whereas $u_{\infty}(\mathbf{r})$ yields the corresponding wave function $\psi_1(\mathbf{r})$. For large but finite $n$, $v_n(\mathbf{r})$ can be approximated by a piecewise constant function $v_n(\mathbf{r}) \simeq v_n^{(m)}$ for $\mathbf{r} \in \Omega_m$ and yields progressively improving estimations of eigenenergies $E_m = 1/v_n^{(m)}$ of locally fundamental eigenstates $\psi_m(\mathbf{r}) \propto u_{n}(\mathbf{r})$ in spatial domains $\Omega_m$. These general results are illustrated by a number of examples in one dimension: box potential, sequence of randomly placed infinite potential barriers, smooth and spatially uncorrelated random potentials, quasiperodic potential.

Abstract:We consider discrete Schrödinger operators on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ with bounded random but not necessarily identically distributed values of the potential. We prove spectral localization (with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions) as well as dynamical localization for this model. An important ingredient of the proof is a non-stationary version of the parametric Furstenberg Theorem on random matrix products, which is also of independent interest.
