Abstract:Usually the first course in mathematics is calculus. Its a core course in the curriculum of the Business, Engineering and the Sciences. However many students face difficulties to learn calculus. These difficulties are often caused by the prior fear of mathematics. The students today cant live without using computer technology. The uses of computer for teaching and learning can transform the boring traditional methodology of teach to more active and attractive method. In this paper, we will show how we can use Excel in teaching calculus to improve our students learning and understanding through different types of applications ranging from Business to Engineering. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology was tested on a random sample of 45 students from different majors over a period of two semesters.

Abstract:The example of the calculus is used to explain how simple, practical math was made enormously complex by imposing on it the Western religiously-colored notion of mathematics as "perfect". We describe a pedagogical experiment to make math easy by teaching "calculus without limits" using the new realistic philosophy of zeroism, different from Platonic idealism or formalist metaphysics. Despite its demonstrated advantages, it is being resisted because of the existing colonial hangover.

Abstract:Despite longstanding efforts in the K-12 STEM education community to create meaningful mathematical experiences across disciplines, mathematics continues to be a siloed subject which is tracked based on ability. With an increasing number of high-achieving students enrolling in Algebra I in Grade 7 or earlier, there is a need for research on the readiness of accelerated STEM-intending students to persist in mathematics at the college level. A mathematical mindset framework was employed to explore the relationships between level of Algebra I acceleration, student (n = 2111) and instructor (n = 141) beliefs about sense-making and mistake-making, and attitudes in first-semester college calculus. Findings from a series of multilevel analyses indicate that interactions between student mathematical mindset and perceived progressive teaching practices influence attitudes toward mathematics. While student-centered instruction had a slightly negative effect on attitude, there was a differential effect in relation to student beliefs about sense-making as a metric of success in mathematics. These findings contribute to empirical understandings of mathematical mindset and the complex transition from high school calculus to college calculus. Implications for interdisciplinary STEM education and persistence in STEM undergraduate study are discussed.
Refining Calculus Pedagogy

Abstract:There have been several modifications of how basic calculus has been taught, but very few of these modifications have considered the computational tools available at our disposal. Here, we present a few tools that are easy to develop and use. Doing so also addresses a different way to view calculus, and attempts to fill the gaps in students' understanding of both differentiation and integration. We will describe the basics of both these topics in a way that might be much more useful and relevant to students, and hence possible ways in refining calculus pedagogy to make calculus more accessible to them. For integration, an elementary development of Gaussian quadrature using basic linear algebra is presented. This numerical method can be extended to integrate functions over various domains in higher dimensions, a subject that is not currently well covered in multivariable calculus or other Mathematics courses. We also briefly discuss series that may be more useful than some of those taught in current calculus courses.

Abstract:Fraction and decimal arithmetic pose large difficulties for many children and adults. This is a serious problem because proficiency with these skills is crucial for learning more advanced mathematics and science and for success in many occupations. This review identifies two main classes of difficulties that underlie poor understanding of rational number arithmetic: inherent and culturally contingent. Inherent sources of difficulty are ones that are imposed by the task of learning rational number arithmetic, such as complex relations among fraction arithmetic operations. They are present for all learners. Culturally contingent sources of difficulty are ones that vary among cultures, such as teacher understanding of rational numbers. They lead to poorer learning among students in some places rather than others. We conclude by discussing interventions that can improve learning of rational number arithmetic.

Abstract:In this paper we use theoretical frameworks from mathematics education and cognitive psychology to analyse Cauchy's ideas of function, continuity, limit and infinitesimal expressed in his Cours D'Analyse. Our analysis focuses on the development of mathematical thinking from human perception and action into more sophisticated forms of reasoning and proof, offering different insights from those afforded by historical or mathematical analyses. It highlights the conceptual power of Cauchy's vision and the fundamental change involved in passing from the dynamic variability of the calculus to the modern set-theoretic formulation of mathematical analysis. This offers a re-evaluation of the relationship between the natural geometry and algebra of elementary calculus that continues to be used in applied mathematics, and the formal set theory of mathematical analysis that develops in pure mathematics and evolves into the logical development of non-standard analysis using infinitesimal concepts. It suggests that educational theories developed to evaluate student learning are themselves based on the conceptions of the experts who formulate them. It encourages us to reflect on the principles that we use to analyse the developing mathematical thinking of students, and to make an effort to understand the rationale of differing theoretical viewpoints.

Abstract:Writing and communication are essential skills for success in the workplace or in graduate school, yet writing and communication are often the last thing that instructors think about incorporating into a mathematics course. A mathematical modeling course provides a natural environment for writing assignments. This article is an analysis of the type of writing assigned in my mathematical modeling course. Where the assignments are unusual, they are thoroughly described and I share my experiences on what worked well and what was not as successful. Where the assignments are more traditional, I offer an analysis of problems and pitfalls in teaching writing. Formal project reports for the class teach students how to write scientific articles. Unusual reflective assignments help students integrate their learning and apply it in new contexts.
Obstacles to Mathematization in Introductory Physics

Abstract:University students taking introductory physics are generally successful executing mathematical procedures in context, but often struggle with the use of mathematical concepts for sense making. Physics instructors note that their students experience difficulty with basic algebraic reasoning, a foundation on which more advanced mathematical thinking rests. However, little systematic research has been done to measure and categorize such difficulties in this population. This paper describes an investigation of trends in student reasoning with proportions, quantification, and symbolizing in introductory calculus-based physics. Although the assessment items used to probe student thinking require mathematical reasoning typically taught at the middle school level in mathematics courses, we find success rates of about 50% among calculus-based physics students. For many of these students, numerical complexity and the level of abstraction of the quantities interfere with basic arithmetic reasoning. We argue that the algebraic thinking of physicists stems from an idiosyncratic cognitive blend, which is not addressed in prerequisite algebra courses. We suggest that for more students to understand and adopt the mathematical thinking characteristic of physics, instructors and education researchers must explore how to make mathematization a more explicit part of the curriculum.

Abstract:We identified three most challenging points related to diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DEI) issues. First, the majority of our students entering the College lack the math skills essential to success in Calculus, as basic as College Algebra, some others have a multi-year gap after graduating high school. Almost all but a few STEM students must start from College Algebra before they can move on to Precalculus and then Calculus. Secondly, we noted that many students who planned to pursue STEM dropped out of their majors because they couldn't obtain the required grade in College Algebra to move forward. This is one of the main reasons that the enrollment of calculus classes is consistently low. Lastly, a large portion of basic math classes are taught by adjunct instructors, the turnover ratio among adjunct instructors is not small. One such consequence is that many students don't have equitable learning experiences and some students are still struggling with College Algebra even in the calculus class. In this paper, we describe an illustrative case study of a college-wide initiative to tackle the DEI issues.

Abstract:Much effort and research has been invested into understanding and bridging the gaps which many students experience in terms of contents and expectations as they begin university studies with a heavy component of mathematics, typically in the form of calculus courses. We have several studies of bridging measures, success rates and many other aspects of these entrance transition problems. In this paper, we consider the inverse transition, experienced by university students as they revisit core parts of high school mathematics (in particular, calculus) after completing the mandatory undergraduate mathematics courses. To what extent does the advanced experience enable them to approach the high school calculus in a deeper and more autonomous way? To what extent can capstone courses support such an approach? How could it be hindered by deficiencies in the students' advanced experience? In this paper, we present a theoretical framework for an analysis of these questions, as well as a number of critical observations and reflections on how they appear in our own institutional context.

As technologies related to artificial intelligence become established in daily life, education related to artificial intelligence has become essential in secondary education and universities. However, in a reality where the barrier to entry to acquire knowledge related to artificial intelligence is very high, we provide a curriculum that allows students to obtain mathematical knowledge related to artificial intelligence in a relatively easy calculus course rather than a difficult class in a major subject. we will provide direction for improvement.

Abstract:This article discusses an experience of teaching Calculus classes for the freshmen students enrolled at Sungkyunkwan University, one of the private universities in South Korea. The teaching and learning approach is a balance combination between the teacher-oriented traditional style of lecturing and other activities that encourage students for active learning and classroom participation. Based on the initial observation during several semesters, some anecdotal evidences show that students' learning is improved after implementing this student-oriented active learning approach, albeit a longer period of time is definitely needed to transform general students' attitude from passive learners to active ones.
Upper-division Student Understanding of Coulomb's Law: Difficulties with Continuous Charge Distributions

Abstract:Utilizing the integral expression of Coulomb's Law to determine the electric potential from a continuous charge distribution is a canonical exercise in Electricity and Magnetism (E&M). In this study, we use both think-aloud interviews and responses to traditional exam questions to investigate student difficulties with this topic at the upper-division level. Leveraging a theoretical framework for the use of mathematics in physics, we discuss how students activate, construct, execute and reflect on the integral form of Coulomb's Law when solving problems with continuous charge distributions. We present evidence that junior-level E&M students have difficulty mapping physical systems onto the mathematical expression for the Coulomb potential. Common challenges include difficulty expressing the difference vector in appropriate coordinates as well as determining expressions for the differential charge element and limits of integration for a specific charge distribution. We discuss possible implications of these findings for future research directions and instructional strategies.

The Challenges of Teaching Elementary Linear Algebra in a Modern Matrix Based Way

Abstract:We assess the situation of our elementary Linear Algebra classes in the US holistically and through personal history recollections. Possible remedies for our elementary Linear Algebra's teaching problems are discussed and a change from abstract algebraic taught classes to a concrete matrix based first course is considered. The challenges of such modernization attempts for this course are laid out in light of our increased after-Covid use of e-books and e-primers. We specifically address the useless and needless, but ubiquitous use of determinants, characteristic polynomials and polynomial root finding methods that are propagated in our elementary text books and are used in the majority of our elementary Linear Algebra classes for the matrix eigenvalue problem but that have no practical use whatsoever and offer no solution for finding matrix eigenvalues. This paper challenges all mathematicians as we have misinformed and miseducated our students badly for decades in elementary Linear Algebra now and urges a switch to a new, fully matrix theoretical approach that covers all classical subjects in a practical and computable way.

Abstract:This article covers how a computer algebra system (CAS) wxMaxima can be explored for teaching and learning Single-Variable and Multivariable Calculus for Korean digital natives. We present several examples where \emph{wxMaxima} can handle Calculus problems easily, not straightforwardly but still successfully solved with some human intervention, and unsuccessfully. By soliciting qualitative feedback on students' experience in exploiting the CAS, we gathered a mixed reaction. Although some students commented positively, the majority seemed to be resistant in embracing a new technological tool.

Abstract:Abstract Numerous conceptual difficulties and misconceptions have been reported in the science and chemistry education literature about electrochemistry concepts such as electrolytes, redox equations, and about electrochemical (galvanic and electrolytic) cells. Other studies have considered teaching approaches aimed at improving learning and at overcoming misconceptions. This paper reviews these studies and considers strategies and approaches for the effective teaching of electrochemistry. Then, the review focuses on problem solving in equilibrium electrochemistry, especially problems involving the Nernst equation. The main findings of four studies with Greek university chemistry students, dealing with: (i) algorithmic problem‐solving ability; (ii) practice on problem solving; (iii) the effect of the format of a problem; and (iv) the construction and evaluation of a website devoted to electrochemistry problem solving, are reported.

Abstract:Learning advanced physics, in general, is challenging not only due to the increased mathematical sophistication but also because one must continue to build on all of the prior knowledge acquired at the introductory and intermediate levels. In addition, learning quantum mechanics can be especially challenging because the paradigms of classical mechanics and quantum mechanics are very different. Here, we review research on student reasoning difficulties in learning upper-level quantum mechanics and research on students' problem-solving and metacognitive skills in these courses. Some of these studies were multi-university investigations. The investigations suggest that there is large diversity in student performance in upper-level quantum mechanics regardless of the university, textbook, or instructor and many students in these courses have not acquired a functional understanding of the fundamental concepts. The nature of reasoning difficulties in learning quantum mechanics is analogous to reasoning difficulties found via research in introductory physics courses. The reasoning difficulties were often due to over-generalizations of concepts learned in one context to another context where they are not directly applicable. Reasoning difficulties in distinguishing between closely related concepts and in making sense of the formalism of quantum mechanics were common. We conclude with a brief summary of the research-based approached that take advantage of research on student difficulties in order to improve teaching and learning of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:The anthropological theory of didactics (ATD) provides a lens to view mathematics education by placing mathematical practices within socio-cultural and historical contexts. The significance of institutions, in what regards with educational establishments, societal structures, cultural norms, and historical contexts, influences the perception and practice of mathematics in both students and teachers. This perspective is relevant for understanding the complexities of teaching multivariate calculus. Traditional approaches to this subject have been lecture-based, but with the evolution of educational paradigms, active pedagogies have emerged as vital. These include among others inquiry-based learning, collaborative learning, the flipped classroom approach, technology-enhanced active learning, and project-based learning. The challenges students face in multivariate calculus range from conceptual complexities to visualization challenges and over-reliance on memorization. In this work, we propose a holistic approach for defining class activities in multivariate calculus with emphasis in integrating visualization techniques, real-world applications, collaborative activities, and feedback mechanisms. Accordingly, four class activities, grounded in the principles of ATD and tailored to address challenges in multivariate calculus, are proposed. These activities aim to foster significant understanding, relevance, and engagement in students.
