Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:By studying a fully nonlinear flow deforming conformal metrics on compact and connected manifold, we prove that for $\lambda < 1$, any metric g with its modified Schouten tensor $A^\lambda_{g}\in \Gamma_k^-$ always can be deformed in a natural way to a conformal metric with constant $\sigma_k$-scalar curvature at exponential rate.

Abstract:The conformai properties of complex Finsler metrics are studied. We first give a characterization of a compact complex Finsler manifold to be globally conformai Kahler. By considering the total holomorphic curvature and total Ricci curvature in the volume preserved conformal classes, we then study the variational properties of Kahler Finsler metrics. By studying the spectral properties of two average metrics, the stabilities of critical Kähler Finsler metrics are verified. Finally, a Yamabe type problem for mean holomorphic Ricci curvature is considered, and a partial existence result is obtained.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to study the conformal geometry of complete quasi Yamabe gradient solitons, which correspond to an interesting generalization for gradient Yamabe solitons. In this sense, we present a rigidity result for complete quasi Yamabe gradient solitons with constant scalar curvature. Moreover, we prove that quasi Yamabe gradient solitons can be conformally changed to constant scalar curvature.

Abstract:We study unparametrized conformal circles, or called conformal geodesics, study diffeomorphisms mapping conformal circles to conformal circles in pseudo-Riemannian conformal manifolds. We show that such local diffeomorphisms are conformal local diffeomorphisms. Our result extends the result of Yano and Tomonaga. We also present a holographic interpretation for our result on Poincaré-Einstein manifolds. The proofs take suitable variations of conformal circles.

Conformal deformation of a Riemannian metric via an Einstein-Dirac parabolic flow

Abstract:We introduce a new parabolic flow deforming any Riemannian metric on a spin manifold by following a constrained gradient flow of the total scalar curvature. This flow is built out of the well-known Dirac-Einstein functional. We prove local well-posedness of smooth solutions. The present contribution is the first installment of more general program on the Einstein-Dirac problem.

Abstract:We consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric by a fully nonlinear flow on a compact manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We prove that the k-curvature defined by the modified Schouten tensor always can be deformed in a natural way to a constant at exponential rate and the boundary preserves totally geodesic.

Abstract:Conformal mapping has been applied mostly to harmonic functions, i.e. solutions of Laplace's equation. In this paper, it is noted that some other equations are also conformally invariant and thus equally well suited for conformal mapping in two dimensions. In physics, these include steady states of various nonlinear diffusion equations, the advection-diffusion equations for potential flows, and the Nernst-Planck equations for bulk electrochemical transport. Exact solutions for complicated geometries are obtained by conformal mapping to simple geometries in the usual way. Novel examples include nonlinear advection-diffusion layers around absorbing objects and concentration polarizations in electrochemical cells. Although some of these results could be obtained by other methods, such as Boussinesq's streamline coordinates, the present approach is based on a simple unifying principle of more general applicability. It reveals a basic geometrical equivalence of similarity solutions for a broad class of transport processes and paves the way for new applications of conformal mapping, e.g. to non-Laplacian fractal growth.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the fully nonlinear equation σ2(g)=aσ1(g)+b. The first result is to obtain the entire solutions of the equation for conformally flat metric on Rn under some additional assumptions, which generalizes the famous result of Chang–Gursky–Yang in [3]. The second one is to classify compact locally conformally flat manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and the metric g satisfying the equation.

Abstract:For conformal geometries of Riemannian signature, we provide a comprehensive and explicit treatment of the core local theory for embedded submanifolds of arbitrary dimension. This is based in the conformal tractor calculus and includes a conformally invariant Gauss formula leading to conformal versions of the Gauss, Codazzi, and Ricci equations. It provides the tools for proliferating submanifold conformal invariants, as well for extending to conformally singular Riemannian manifolds the notions of mean curvature and of minimal and CMC submanifolds. A notion of distinguished submanifold is defined by asking the tractor second fundamental form to vanish. We show that for the case of curves this exactly characterises conformal geodesics (a.k.a. conformal circles) while for hypersurfaces it is the totally umbilic condition. So, for other codimensions, this unifying notion interpolates between these extremes, and we prove that in all dimensions this coincides with the submanifold being weakly conformally circular, meaning that ambient conformal circles remain in the submanifold. Stronger notions of conformal circularity are then characterised similarly. Next we provide a very general theory and construction of quantities that are necessarily conserved along distinguished submanifolds. This first integral theory thus vastly generalises the results available for conformal circles in [56]. We prove that any normal solution to an equation from the class of first BGG equations can yield such a conserved quantity, and show that it is easy to provide explicit formulae for these. Finally we prove that the property of being distinguished is also captured by a type of moving incidence relation. This second characterisation is used to show that, for suitable solutions of conformal Killing-Yano equations, a certain zero locus of the solution is necessarily a distinguished submanifold.

Algebraic Conditions for Conformal Superintegrability in Arbitrary Dimension

Abstract:We consider second order (maximally) conformally superintegrable systems and explain how the definition of such a system on a (pseudo-)Riemannian manifold gives rise to a conformally invariant interpretation of superintegrability. Conformal equivalence in this context is a natural extension of the classical (linear) Stäckel transform, originating from the Maupertuis-Jacobi principle. We extend our recently developed algebraic geometric approach for the classification of second order superintegrable systems in arbitrarily high dimension to conformally superintegrable systems, which are presented via conformal scale choices of second order superintegrable systems defined within a conformal geometry. For superintegrable systems on constant curvature spaces, we find that the conformal scales of Stäckel equivalent systems arise from eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and that their equivalence is characterised by a conformal density of weight two. Our approach yields an algebraic equation that governs the classification under conformal equivalence for a prolific class of second order conformally superintegrable systems. This class contains all non-degenerate examples known to date, and is given by a simple algebraic constraint of degree two on a general harmonic cubic form. In this way the yet unsolved classification problem is put into the reach of algebraic geometry and geometric invariant theory. In particular, no obstruction exists in dimension three, and thus the known classification of conformally superintegrable systems is reobtained in the guise of an unrestricted univariate sextic. In higher dimensions, the obstruction is new and has never been revealed by traditional approaches.

Abstract:Mappingsofbi-conformalenergyformthewidestclass of homeomorphisms that one can hope to build a viable extension of Geometric Function Theory with connections to mathematical models of Nonlinear Elasticity. Such mappings are exactly the ones with finite conformal energy and integrable inner distortion. It is in this way, that our studies extend the applications of quasiconformal homeomorphisms to the degenerate elliptic systems of PDEs. The present paper searches a bi-conformal variant of the Riemann Mapping Theorem, focusing on domains with exemplary singular boundaries that are not quasiballs. We establish the sharp description of boundary singularities that can be created and flattened by mappings of bi-conformal energy.

Abstract:In this article, it is shown how the extended conformal Einstein field equations and a gauge based on the properties of conformal geodesics can be used to analyse the non-linear stability of de Sitter-like spacetimes with spatial sections of negative scalar curvature. This class of spacetimes admits a smooth conformal extension with a space-like conformal boundary. Central to the analysis is the use of conformal Gaussian systems to obtain a hyperbolic reduction of the conformal Einstein field equations for which standard Cauchy stability results for symmetric hyperbolic systems can be employed. The use of conformal methods allows us to rephrase the question of the global existence of solutions to the Einstein field equations into considerations of finite existence time for the conformal evolution system.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we perform a comprehensive analysis of conformal symmetries in the generalized Vaidya spacetime and establish several new results. First, a proper conformal Killing vector is shown to exist in the radial direction and interestingly the generalized Vaidya spacetimes with this symmetry are shown to be the subclass of those, which are embeddable in five-dimensional Euclidean space. The general form of the mass function that enables the proper and planar conformal symmetry in the [math]–[math] plane is also determined. This treatment also includes earlier results. We also consider the gravitational collapse of these spacetimes with proper planar conformal symmetry in the context of cosmic censorship conjecture. We obtain an interesting and novel result that censorship is always obeyed for these spacetimes, and no locally naked central singularity forms as the end state of the continual collapse.

Abstract:This paper studies conformal biharmonic immersions. We first study the transformations of Jacobi operator and the bitension field under conformal change of metrics. We then obtain an invariant equation for a conformal biharmonic immersion of a surface into Euclidean 3-space. As applications, we construct a two-parameter family of non-minimal conformal biharmonic immersions of cylinder into $${\mathbb{R}^3}$$ and some examples of conformal biharmonic immersions of four-dimensional Euclidean space into sphere and hyperbolic space, thus providing many simple examples of proper biharmonic maps with rich geometric meanings. These suggest that there are abundant proper biharmonic maps in the family of conformal immersions. We also explore the relationship between biharmonicity and holomorphicity of conformal immersions of surfaces.

Abstract:Computational conformal geometry focuses on developing the computational methodologies on discrete surfaces to discover conformal geometric invariants. In this work, we briefly summarize the recent developments for methods and related applications in computational conformal geometry. There are two major approaches, holomorphic differentials and curvature flow. The holomorphic differential method is a linear method, which is more efficient and robust to triangulations with lower quality. The curvature flow method is nonlinear and requires higher quality triangulations, but more flexible. The conformal geometric methods have been broadly applied in many engineering fields, such as computer graphics, vision, geometric modeling and medical imaging. The algorithms are robust for surfaces scanned from real life, general for surfaces with different topologies. The efficiency and efficacy of the algorithms are demonstrated by the experimental results.
