Abstract:We establish a characterization of alternating links in terms of definite spanning surfaces. We apply it to obtain a new proof of Tait's conjecture that reduced alternating diagrams of the same link have the same crossing number and writhe. We also deduce a result of Banks and Hirasawa-Sakuma about Seifert surfaces for special alternating links. The appendix, written by Juhász and Lackenby, applies the characterization to derive an exponential time algorithm for alternating knot recognition.

Abstract:It has been known for several decades that classical alternating links in the 3-sphere have nice hyperbolic geometric properties. Recent work generalises such results to give hyperbolic geometry of links with alternating projections onto any surface in very general 3-manifolds. However, the most general results require an orientable projection surface. In this paper, we extend to alternating links on nonorientable projection surfaces. As an application, we study Klein bottly alternating links in prism manifolds, which are a natural generalisation of Adams' toroidally alternating links in lens spaces.

Abstract:An alternating distance is a link invariant that measures how far away a link is from alternating. We study several alternating distances and demonstrate that there exist families of links for which the difference between certain alternating distances is arbitrarily large. We also show that two alternating distances, the alternation number and the alternating genus, are not comparable.

Abstract:We prove that a family of links, which includes all special alternating knots, does not admit non-nugatory crossing changes which preserve the isotopy type of the link. Our proof incorporates a result of Lidman and Moore on crossing changes to knots with $L$-space branched double-covers, as well as tools from Scharlemann and Thompon's proof of the cosmetic crossing conjecture for the unknot.

Abstract:Link equivalence up to isotopy in a 3-space is the problem that lies at the root of knot theory, and is important in 3-dimensional topology and geometry. We consider its restriction to alternating links, given by two alternating diagrams with $n_1$ and $n_2$ crossings, and show that this problem has polynomial algorithm in terms of $max\{n_1, n_2\}$. For the proof, we use Tait flyping conjectures, observations from the work of Lackenby, Menasco, Sundberg and Thistlethwaite on alternating links, and algorithmic complexity of some problems from graph theory and topological graph theory.

Abstract:Given a reduced alternating diagram for a link, we obtain conditions that guarantee that the link complement has a complete hyperbolic structure, crossing arcs are the edges of an ideal geodesic triangulation, and every crossing arc is isotopic to a simple geodesic. The latter was conjectured by Sakuma and Weeks in 1995. We provide infinite families of closed braids for which our conditions hold.

Abstract:Given any link $L\subseteq S^3$, we show that it is possible to embed an unknot $U$ in its complement so that the link $L\cup U$ satisfies the Meridional Rank Conjecture (MRC). The bridge numbers in our construction fit into the equality $\beta(L\cup U)=2\beta(L)-1=\text{rank}(\pi_1(S^3\backslash (L\cup U)))$. In addition, we prove the MRC for new infinite families of links and distinguish them from previously settled cases through an application of bridge distance.

Abstract:In this note we prove that alternating chainmail links are L-space links. The proof is inspired by corresponding proofs for double branched covers of alternating links. We also more generally show that flat augmented chainmail links are generalized L-space links. Some other properties of these links are also considered.

Abstract:Abstract We introduce a multiparameter deformation of the triply‐graded Khovanov–Rozansky homology of links colored by one‐column Young diagrams, generalizing the “‐ified” link homology of Gorsky–Hogancamp and work of Cautis–Lauda–Sussan. For each link component, the natural set of deformation parameters corresponds to interpolation coordinates on the Hilbert scheme of the plane. We extend our deformed link homology theory to braids by introducing a monoidal dg 2‐category of curved complexes of type A singular Soergel bimodules. Using this framework, we promote to the curved setting the categorical colored skein relation from our recent joint work and also the notion of splitting map for the colored full twists on two strands. As applications, we compute the invariants of colored Hopf links in terms of ideals generated by Haiman determinants and use these results to establish general link splitting properties for our deformed, colored, triply‐graded link homology. Informed by this, we formulate several conjectures that have implications for the relation between (colored) Khovanov–Rozansky homology and Hilbert schemes.

In particular, these link complements arise as n-fold cyclic covers of the Whitehead link complement.

Abstract:We study the relation between augmentations and sheaves in the context of framed oriented links. In this set up, we find slightly more sheaves than augmentations. After removing the sporadic sheaves, we construct a bijective correspondence between augmentations of the framed cord algebra and simple sheaves that are micro-supported along the conormal bundle of the link.

Abstract:Surgery on a knot in $S^3$ is said to be an alternating surgery if it yields the double branched cover of an alternating link. The main theoretical contribution is to show that the set of alternating surgery slopes is algorithmically computable and to establish several structural results. Furthermore, we calculate the set of alternating surgery slopes for many examples of knots, including all hyperbolic knots in the SnapPy census. These examples exhibit several interesting phenomena including strongly invertible knots with a unique alternating surgery and asymmetric knots with two alternating surgery slopes. We also establish upper bounds on the set of alternating surgeries, showing that an alternating surgery slope on a hyperbolic knot satisfies $|p/q| \leq 3g(K)+4$. Notably, this bound applies to lens space surgeries, thereby strengthening the known genus bounds from the conjecture of Goda and Teragaito.

Abstract:Traditionally, alternating links are studied with alternating diagrams on $S^2$ in $S^3$. In this paper, we consider links which are alternating on higher genus surfaces $S_g$ in $S_g \times I$. We define what it means for such a link to be right-angled generalized completely realizable (RGCR) and show that this property is equivalent to the link having two totally geodesic checkerboard surfaces, equivalent to each checkerboard surface consisting of one type of polygon, and equivalent to a set of restrictions on the link's alternating projection diagram. We then use these diagram restrictions to classify RGCR links according to the polygons in their checkerboard surfaces, provide a bound on the number of RGCR links for a given surface of genus $g$, and find an RGCR knot. Along the way, we answer a question posed by Champanerkar, Kofman, and Purcell about links with alternating projections on the torus.

Abstract:We show that a special alternating knot with sufficiently large number (more than $63$) of twist regions has no chirally cosmetic surgeries, a pair of Dehn surgeries producing orientation-reversingly homeomorphic $3$-manifolds. In the course of proof, we provide the optimal upper bounds of the primitive finite type invariants of degree 2 and 3 that solve Willerton's conjecture.
Studying Links via Plats: The Unlink

Abstract:Our main result is a version of Birman's theorem about equivalence of plats, which does not involve stabilization, for the unlink. We introduce the pocket and flip moves, which modify a plat without changing its link type or bridge index. Theorem 1 shows that using the pocket and flip moves, one can simplify any closed $n$-plat presentation of the unknot to the standard 0-crossing diagram of the unknot, through a sequence of plats of non-increasing bridge index. The theorem readily generalises to the case of the unlink.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that two flat fully augmented links with homeomorphic complements must be equivalent as links in $\mathbb{S}^{3}$. This requires a careful analysis of how totally geodesic surfaces and cusps intersect in these link complements and behave under homeomorphism. One consequence of this analysis is a complete classification of flat fully augmented link complements that admit multiple reflection surfaces. In addition, our work classifies those symmetries of flat fully augmented link complements which are not induced by symmetries of the corresponding link.

Abstract:We suggest a new random model for links based on meander diagrams and graphs. We then prove that trivial links appear with vanishing probability in this model, no link L is obtained with probability 1, and there is a lower bound for the number of non-isotopic knots obtained for a fixed number of crossings. A random meander diagram is obtained through matching pairs of parentheses, a well-studied problem in combinatorics. Hence tools from combinatorics can be used to investigate properties of random links in this model, and, moreover, of the respective 3-manifolds that are link complements in 3-sphere. We use this for exploring geometric properties of a link complement. Specifically, we give expected twist number of a link diagram and use it to bound expected hyperbolic and simplicial volume of random links. The tools from combinatorics that we use include Catalan and Narayana numbers, and Zeilberger's algorithm.

Abstract:In the present work, we realize the space of 2-string links $\mathcal{L}$ as a free algebra over a colored operad denoted $\mathcal{SCL}$ (for "Swiss-Cheese for links"). This result extends works of Burke and Koytcheff about the quotient of $\mathcal{L}$ by its center and is compatible with Budney's freeness theorem for long knots. From an algebraic point of view, our main result refines Blaire, Burke and Koytcheff's theorem on the monoid of isotopy classes of string links. Topologically, it expresses the homotopy type of the isotopy class of a 2-string link in terms of the homotopy types of the classes of its prime factors.
