Abstract:Quantum Cramér-Rao bound is the ultimate limit of the mean squared error for unbiased estimation of an unknown parameter embedded in a quantum state. While it can be achieved asymptotically for large number of quantum state copies, the measurement required often depends on the true value of the parameter of interest. This paradox was addressed by Hayashi and Matsumoto using a two-stage approach in 2005. Unfortunately, their analysis imposes conditions that severely restrict the class of classical estimators applied to the quantum measurement outcomes, hindering applications of this method. We relax these conditions to substantially broaden the class of usable estimators at the cost of slightly weakening the asymptotic properties of the two-stage method. We apply our results to obtain the asymptotics of quantum-enhanced transmittance sensing.

Abstract:We formulate the error and disturbance in quantum measurement by invoking quantum estimation theory. The disturbance formulated here characterizes the non-unitary state change caused by the measurement. We prove that the product of the error and disturbance is bounded from below by the commutator of the observables. We also find the attainable bound of the product.

Abstract:We systematically investigate quantum algorithms and lower bounds for mean estimation given query access to non-identically distributed samples. On the one hand, we give quantum mean estimators with quadratic quantum speed-up given samples from different bounded or sub-Gaussian random variables. On the other hand, we prove that, in general, it is impossible for any quantum algorithm to achieve quadratic speed-up over the number of classical samples needed to estimate the mean $\mu$, where the samples come from different random variables with mean close to $\mu$. Technically, our quantum algorithms reduce bounded and sub-Gaussian random variables to the Bernoulli case, and use an uncomputation trick to overcome the challenge that direct amplitude estimation does not work with non-identical query access. Our quantum query lower bounds are established by simulating non-identical oracles by parallel oracles, and also by an adversarial method with non-identical oracles. Both results pave the way for proving quantum query lower bounds with non-identical oracles in general, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Quantum estimation theory is a reformulation of random statistical theory with the modern language of quantum mechanics. In fact, the density operator plays a role similar to that of probability distribution functions in classical probability theory and statistics. However, the use of the probability distribution functions in classical theories is founded on premises that seem intuitively clear enough. Whereas in quantum theory, the situation with operators is different due to its non-commutativity nature. By exploiting this difference, quantum estimation theory aims to attain ultra-measurement precision that would otherwise be impossible with classical resources. In this thesis, we reviewed all the fundamental principles of classical estimation theory. Next, we extend our analysis to quantum estimation theory. Due to the non-commutativity of quantum mechanics, we prove the different families of QFIs and the corresponding QCRBs. We compared these bounds and discussed their accessibility in the single-parameter and multiparameter estimation cases. We also introduce HCRB as the most informative alternative bound suitable for multiparameter estimation protocols. Since the quantum state of light is the most accessible in practice, we studied the quantum estimation theory with the formalism of these types of quantum states. We formulate, with complete generality, the quantum estimation theory for Gaussian states in terms of their first and second moments. Furthermore, we address the motivation behind using Gaussian quantum resources and their advantages in reaching the standard quantum limits under realistic noise. In this context, we propose and analyze a measurement scheme that aims to exploit quantum Gaussian entangled states to estimate the displacement parameters under a noisy Gaussian environment.

Abstract:Quantum-enhanced (i.e., higher performance by quantum effects than any classical methods) mean value estimation of observables is a fundamental task in various quantum technologies; in particular, it is an essential subroutine in quantum computing algorithms. Notably, the quantum estimation theory identifies the ultimate precision of such an estimator, which is referred to as the quantum Cramér-Rao (QCR) lower bound or equivalently the inverse of the quantum Fisher information. Because the estimation precision directly determines the performance of those quantum technological systems, it is highly demanded to develop a generic and practically implementable estimation method that achieves the QCR bound. Under imperfect conditions, however, such an ultimate and implementable estimator for quantum mean values has not been developed. In this paper, we propose a quantum-enhanced mean value estimation method in a depolarizing noisy environment that asymptotically achieves the QCR bound in the limit of a large number of qubits. To approach the QCR bound in a practical setting, the method adaptively optimizes the amplitude amplification and a specific measurement that can be implemented without any knowledge of state preparation. We provide a rigorous analysis for the statistical properties of the proposed adaptive estimator such as consistency and asymptotic normality. Furthermore, several numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, particularly showing that the estimator needs only a modest number of measurements to almost saturate the QCR bound.

Abstract:We herein establish an asymptotic representation theorem for locally asymptotically normal quantum statistical models. This theorem enables us to study the asymptotic efficiency of quantum estimators such as quantum regular estimators and quantum minimax estimators, leading to a universal tight lower bound beyond the i.i.d. assumption. This formulation complements the theory of quantum contiguity developed in the previous paper [Fujiwara and Yamagata, Bernoulli 26 (2020) 2105-2141], providing a solid foundation of the theory of weak quantum local asymptotic normality.

Entropic Quantum Central Limit Theorem and Quantum Inverse Sumset Theorem

Abstract:We establish an entropic, quantum central limit theorem and quantum inverse sumset theorem in discrete-variable quantum systems describing qudits or qubits. Both results are enabled by using our recently-discovered quantum convolution. We show that the exponential rate of convergence of the entropic central limit theorem is bounded by the magic gap. We also establish an ``quantum, entropic inverse sumset theorem,'' by introducing a quantum doubling constant. Furthermore, we introduce a ``quantum Ruzsa divergence'', and we pose a conjecture called ``convolutional strong subaddivity,'' which leads to the triangle inequality for the quantum Ruzsa divergence. A byproduct of this work is a magic measure to quantify the nonstabilizer nature of a state, based on the quantum Ruzsa divergence.

Abstract:Measurement estimation bounds for local quantum multiparameter estimation, which provide lower bounds on possible measurement uncertainties, have so far been formulated in two ways: by extending the classical Cramér--Rao bound (e.g., the quantum Cramér--Rao bound and the Nagaoka Cram'er--Rao bound) and by incorporating the parameter estimation framework with the uncertainty principle, as in the Lu--Wang uncertainty relation. In this work, we present a general framework that allows a direct comparison between these different types of estimation limits. Specifically, we compare the attainability of the Nagaoka Cramér--Rao bound and the Lu--Wang uncertainty relation, using analytical and numerical techniques. We show that these two limits can provide different information about the physically attainable precision. We present an example where both limits provide the same attainable precision and an example where the Lu--Wang uncertainty relation is not attainable even for pure states. We further demonstrate that the unattainability in the latter case arises because the figure of merit underpinning the Lu--Wang uncertainty relation (the difference between the quantum and classical Fisher information matrices) does not necessarily agree with the conventionally used figure of merit (mean squared error). The results offer insights into the general attainability and applicability of the Lu--Wang uncertainty relation. Furthermore, our proposed framework for comparing bounds of different types may prove useful in other settings.

Abstract:We introduce a framework to study discrete-variable (DV) quantum systems based on qudits. It relies on notions of a mean state (MS), a minimal stabilizer-projection state (MSPS), and a new convolution. Some interesting consequences are: The MS is the closest MSPS to a given state with respect to the relative entropy; the MS is extremal with respect to the von Neumann entropy, demonstrating a ''maximal entropy principle in DV systems.'' We obtain a series of inequalities for quantum entropies and for Fisher information based on convolution, giving a ''second law of thermodynamics for quantum convolutions.'' We show that the convolution of two stabilizer states is a stabilizer state. We establish a central limit theorem, based on iterating the convolution of a zero-mean quantum state, and show this converges to its MS. The rate of convergence is characterized by the ''magic gap,'' which we define in terms of the support of the characteristic function of the state. We elaborate on two examples: the DV beam splitter and the DV amplifier.

Abstract:Quantum Metrology calculates the ultimate precision of all estimation strategies, measuring what is their root mean-square error (RMSE) and their Fisher information. Here, instead, we ask how many bits of the parameter we can recover, namely we derive an information-theoretic quantum metrology. In this setting we redefine "Heisenberg bound" and "standard quantum limit" (the usual benchmarks in quantum estimation theory), and show that the former can be attained only by sequential strategies or parallel strategies that employ entanglement among probes, whereas parallel-separable strategies are limited by the latter. We highlight the differences between this setting and the RMSE-based one.

Abstract:In this article we derive a measure of quantumness in quantum multi-parameter estimation problems. We can show that the ratio between the mean Uhlmann Curvature and the Fisher Information provides a figure of merit which estimates the amount of incompatibility arising from the quantum nature of the underlying physical system. This ratio accounts for the discrepancy between the attainable precision in the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters and the precision predicted by the Cramér-Rao bound. As a testbed for this concept, we consider a quantum many-body system in thermal equilibrium, and explore the quantum compatibility of the model across its phase diagram.

The Cramér-Rao approach and global quantum estimation of bosonic states

Abstract:Quantum state estimation is a fundamental task in quantum information theory, where one estimates real parameters continuously embedded in a family of quantum states. In the theory of quantum state estimation, the widely used Cramér Rao approach which considers local estimation gives the ultimate precision bound of quantum state estimation in terms of the quantum Fisher information. However practical scenarios need not offer much prior information about the parameters to be estimated, and the local estimation setting need not apply. In general, it is unclear whether the Cramér-Rao approach is applicable for global estimation instead of local estimation. In this paper, we find situations where the Cramér-Rao approach does and does not work for quantum state estimation problems involving a family of bosonic states in a non-IID setting, where we only use one copy of the bosonic quantum state in the large number of bosons setting. Our result highlights the importance of caution when using the results of the Cramér-Rao approach to extrapolate to the global estimation setting.

Towards Optimal Convergence Rates for the Quantum Central Limit Theorem

Abstract:Quantum central limit theorem for bosonic systems states that the sequence of states $\rho^{\boxplus n}$ obtained from the $n$-fold convolution of a centered quantum state $\rho$ converges to a quantum Gaussian state $\rho_G$ that has the same first and second moments as $\rho$. In this paper, we contribute to the problem of finding optimal rate of convergence for this theorem. We first show that if an $m$-mode quantum state has a finite moment of order $\max\{3, 2m\}$, then we have $\|\rho - \rho_G\|_1=\mathcal O(n^{-1/2})$. By giving an explicit example, we verify that this convergence rate is optimal. We also introduce a notion of Poincaré inequality for quantum states and show that if $\rho$ satisfies this Poincaré inequality, then $D(\rho\| \rho_G)= \mathcal O(n^{-1})$.

Bayesian Nagaoka-Hayashi Bound for Multiparameter Quantum-State Estimation Problem

Abstract:In this work we propose a Bayesian version of the Nagaoka-Hayashi bound when estimating a parametric family of quantum states. This lower bound is a generalization of a recently proposed bound for point estimation to Bayesian estimation. We then show that the proposed lower bound can be efficiently computed as a semidefinite programming problem. As a lower bound, we also derive a Bayesian version of the Holevo-type bound from the Bayesian Nagaoka-Hayashi bound. Lastly, we prove that the new lower bound is tighter than the Bayesian quantum Cramer-Rao bounds.

Abstract:I propose quantum versions of the Ziv-Zakai bounds as alternatives to the widely used quantum Cramér-Rao bounds for quantum parameter estimation. From a simple form of the proposed bounds, I derive both a Heisenberg error limit that scales with the average energy and a limit similar to the quantum Cramér-Rao bound that scales with the energy variance. These results are further illustrated by applying the bound to a few examples of optical phase estimation, which show that a quantum Ziv-Zakai bound can be much higher and thus tighter than a quantum Cramér-Rao bound for states with highly non-gaussian photon-number statistics in certain regimes and also stay close to the latter where the latter is expected to be tight.

Abstract:This post is the author's doctoral dissertation back in 1997. The dissertation covers following four kinds of problems: First, it studies achievable Cramer-Rao type bounds of various multi-parameter pure state models. Second, it relates CR-bouds, both of mixed state and pure states, with Berry-Uhlmann curvature. Roughly, it characterize how the statistical model differs from classical probability distribution family. Though the relation is rather qualitative for mixed states, the quantitative relation is obtained for pure state models. Third topic is relation between Berry-Uhlmann geometry and Amari-Nagaoka's quantum information geometry. Forth, various problems in quantum physics, uncertainty relations, measurement of temperature, time reversal symmetry, etc., are discussed using estimation theory.

Abstract:The widely used quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) sets a lower bound for the mean square error of unbiased estimators in quantum parameter estimation, however, in general QCRB is only tight in the asymptotical limit. With a limited number of measurements biased estimators can have a far better performance for which QCRB cannot calibrate. Here we introduce a valid lower bound for all estimators, either biased or unbiased, which can serve as standard of merit for all quantum parameter estimations.
