Abstract:The coherent hadron production analogous to Cherenkov radiation of photons gives rise to the ring-like events. Being projected on the ring diameter they produce the two-bump structure recently observed for the away-side jets at RHIC. The position of the peaks and their height determine such properties of the hadronic medium as its nuclear refractive index, the parton density, the free path length and the energy loss of Cherenkov gluons. Cherenkov gluons may be responsible for the asymmetry of dilepton mass spectra near rho-meson observed in experiment. Beside comparatively low energy gluons observed at RHIC, there could be high energy gluons at LHC, related to the high energy region of positive real part of the forward scattering amplitude and possessing different characteristics. This would allow to scan (x, Q^2)-plane determining the parton densities in its various regions.

Abstract:Starting from the modified Maxwell equations in Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics we study the electromagnetic radiation in a chiral medium characterized by an axion coupling $\theta(x)=b_\mu x^\mu$, with $b_\mu= (0,\mathbf{b})$, which gives rise to the magnetoelectric effect. Employing the stationary phase approximation we construct the Green's matrix in the radiation zone which allows the calculation of the corresponding electromagnetic potentials and fields for arbitrary sources. We obtain a general expression for the angular distribution of the radiated energy per unit frequency. As an application we consider a charge moving at constant velocity parallel to $\mathbf{b}$ in the medium and discuss the resulting Cherenkov radiation. We recover the vacuum Cherenkov radiation. For the case of a material with refraction index $n > 1$ we find that zero, one or two Cherenkov cones can appear. The spectral distribution of the radiation together with the comparison of the radiation output of each cone are presented, as well as some angular plots showing the appearance of the cones.

Abstract:We explore the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram's complexities, including quark deconfinement transitions, liquid-gas phase changes, and critical points, using the chiral mean-field (CMF) model that is able to capture all these features. We introduce a vector meson renormalization within the CMF framework, enabling precise adjustments of meson masses and coupling strengths related to vector meson interactions. Performing a new fit to the deconfinement potential, we are able to replicate recent lattice QCD results, low energy nuclear physics properties, neutron star observational data, and key phase diagram features as per modern constraints. This approach enhances our understanding of vector mesons' roles in mediating nuclear interactions and their impact on the equation of state, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the QCD phase diagram and its implications for nuclear and astrophysical phenomena.

Abstract:The fundamental theory of the strong interaction -- quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- provides the foundational framework with which to describe and understand the key properties of atomic nuclei. A deep understanding of the explicit role of quarks and gluons in nuclei remains elusive however, as these effects have thus far been well-disguised by confinement effects in QCD which are encapsulated by a successful description in terms of effective hadronic degrees of freedom. The observation of the EMC effect has provided an enduring indication for explicit QCD effects in nuclei, and points to the medium modification of the bound protons and neutrons in the nuclear medium. Understanding the EMC effect is a major challenge for modern nuclear physics, and several key questions remain, such as understanding its flavor, spin, and momentum dependence. This manuscript provides a contemporary snapshot of our understanding of the role of QCD in nuclei and outlines possible pathways in experiment and theory that will help deepen our understanding of nuclei in the context of QCD.

Abstract:Chiral matter exhibits unique electromagnetic responses due to the macroscopic manifestation of the chiral anomaly as anomalous transport currents. Here, we study the modification of electromagnetic radiation in isotropic chiral matter characterized by an axion coupling that varies linearly over time $\theta(t) = b_0 t$. Using Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics, we derive the causal Green's function to investigate the stability and radiation properties of the system. Even though the plane-wave modes of isotropic chiral matter exhibit imaginary frequencies for long wavelengths, which might suggest instability in the system, we show that their contribution is confined to the near-field region. Also we find no exponentially growing fields at arbitrarily large times, so that stability is preserved. Under these conditions the radiation yields a positive energy flux, although this is not an inherent property of the general definition. In the case of a fast-moving charge, we confirm the existence of vacuum Cherenkov radiation and show that, for refractive indices $n > 1$, the Cherenkov cone can split into two concentric cones with opposite circular polarizations. This split, governed by the speed of the particle $v$, $n$ and $b_0$, resembles the optical spin-Hall effect and offers potential applications for creating circularly polarized terahertz (THz) light sources. Our Green's function approach provides a general method for analyzing radiation in chiral matter, from Weyl semimetals to quark-gluon plasmas, and can be extended to systems such as oscillating dipoles and accelerated charges.

Abstract:We discuss a new channel of photon emission from the quark-gluon plasma, which opens up as photon acquires a tachyonic mass in the presence of the CP-odd topological domains generated by the chiral anomaly. It allows photon radiation through the decay $q\to q\gamma$ and annihilation $q\bar q\to \gamma$ processes closely related to the chiral Cherenkov radiation. Unlike previous proposals this mechanism does not require an external magnetic field. The differential photon emission rate per unit volume is computed and shown to be comparable to the rate of photon emission in conventional processes.

Abstract:Measuring gamma rays emitted from nuclear reactions gives insight into their nuclear structure. Notably, there are several nuclear reactions that produce gamma rays at ∼1 MeV-3 MeV energies such as T(4He, γ)7Li, 4He(3He, γ)7Be, and 12C(p, γ)13N, which may solve questions lingering about big-bang nucleosynthesis and stellar nucleosynthesis. To observe 1 MeV-3 MeV gamma rays in an inertial confinement fusion system, a new style of the Cherenkov detector was developed using aerogel and fused silica as a Cherenkov medium. Utilizing the OMEGA laser facility, both aerogel and fused silica media were compared with the existing gas-medium Cherenkov detector to validate the concept. Gamma ray measurements from high yield inertial confinement fusion implosions (deuterium-tritium and deuterium-3He) demonstrated that aerogel and fused silica were viable Cherenkov media, paving the way for a potential optimized detector to make these cross section measurements on OMEGA or the National Ignition Facility.

Abstract:A fast charged particle crossing the boundary between chiral matter and vacuum radiates transition radiation. Its most remarkable features-the resonant behavior at a certain emission angle and the circular polarization of the spectrum-depend on the parameters of the chiral anomaly in a particular material or matter. Chiral transition radiation can be used to investigate the chiral anomaly in such diverse media as the quark-gluon plasma, Weyl semimetals, and axionic dark matter.
Revealing mysteries in gamma-ray bursts: the role of gluon condensation

Abstract:We use a newly recognized gluon distribution in the nucleon, which was predicted by a QCD evolution equation to consistently explain several intriguing phenomena associated with gamma-ray bursts. They are the GeV-TeV spectra of GRB 221009A, the remarkably symmetrical explosion cloud in kilonova AT2017gfo, and the absence of a very high-energy gamma-ray signature in GRB 170817A. We find that these occurrences can be attributed to the gluon condensation within nucleons, i.e., a significant number of soft gluons within nucleons are condensed at a critical momentum, resulting in the emergence of a steep and high peak in the gluon distributions. Through this profound connection between microscopic and macroscopic phenomena, we have not only expanded the applications of the hadronic scenario in cosmic gamma-ray emissions but also presented new evidence for the existence of gluon condensation.

Abstract:Purpose To evaluate whether RNA interference against apoptosis signal-regulating kinase-1 (ASK-1), a gene involved in stress-induced apoptosis, inhibits photoreceptor death in retinal degeneration 1 (rd1) mice. Methods Retinal explants from rd1 mice were subjected to organ cultures on postnatal day 9 (P9). Short interfering RNA (siRNA) for ASK-1 was transfected into cultured retinas at the onset of experiments. Real-time PCR was performed to evaluate the natural expression of ASK-1 mRNA and its inhibition with siRNA. Retinal explants were fixed at P13 and P16, and consecutive cryosections were prepared. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations including TUNEL assays were performed. Results In preliminary experiments, the incorporation of fluorescent siRNA was found in cells in the outer nuclear and inner nuclear layers on the day following transfection. The expression of ASK-1 mRNA increased with time, which was suppressed more than 70% by siRNA. ASK-1 immunopositive cells were found mostly in the outer nuclear layers, and the number of immunopositive cells was remarkably reduced in retinas treated with siRNA for ASK-1 compared to untreated controls. The thickness of outer nuclear layers of control retinas decreased with time, while the thickness of siRNA transfected retinas was significantly preserved compared to control at P16 (p=0.0021). In TUNEL assays, siRNA for ASK-1 significantly decreased TUNEL-positive cells (49% and 42% of controls at P13 and 16, p=0.039 and 0.0028, respectively). Conclusions RNA interference against ASK-1 may provide a benefit by inhibiting photoreceptor apoptosis in rd1 mice.

Abstract:Nuclear reactions that produce γ rays occur in inertial fusion implosions and are commonly measured with Cherenkov detectors. Typically a detector is primarily sensitive to a single reaction, but in some implosions, multiple fusion reactions can occur and are combined in the data. We discuss an analysis technique using multiple thresholded detectors to reproduce the individual burn histories from reactions like DT and HT fusion, which is applicable to separated-reactant mix experiments. Requirements for this technique and resulting analysis uncertainties are quantified using synthetic data.

Abstract:The properties of nuclear matter are studied using state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon forces up to fifth order in chiral effective field theory. The equations of state of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter are calculated in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory. We discuss in detail the convergence pattern of the chiral expansion and the regulator dependence of the calculated equations of state and provide an estimation of the truncation uncertainty. For all employed values of the regulator, the fifth-order chiral two-nucleon potential is found to generate nuclear saturation properties similar to the available phenomenological high precision potentials. We also extract the symmetry energy of nuclear matter, which is shown to be quite robust with respect to the chiral order and the value of the regulator.
