Abstract:Distributed search and routing algorithms based on the DHT (distributed hash table) protocol have attracted considerable attention in structured P2P (peer-to-peer) research as a result of favorable properties such as distribution, self-organization, and high scalability. Compared with a traditional C/S (client/server) network, the probability of peers initiating malicious behavior increases dramatically because of their self-governing and dynamic characteristics, which also make it harder to satisfy the peers’ security required by DHT. In this paper, we propose a new secure DHT protocol based on a multidimensional mapping mechanism. This mechanism maps peers to a multidimensional space by dividing the identifiers into groups. Moreover, a series of secure methods and routing algorithms are provided to achieve secure DHT in smaller spaces. Compared with state-of-the-art approaches, the theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the multidimensional mapping mechanism can effectively improve the average success rate of a resource search by inhibiting malicious behavior.

Abstract:One of the main problems in peer-to-peer systems is how to balance the lookup latency, the number of transmitted messages and the network expansibility. In this paper, we present a P2P model based on a rigorous binary tree code algorithm. Our model is robust and efficient with constant lookup latency and constant message transmission. More importantly, the model has good expansibility and is suitable for super-scale networks.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems are now very popular. Current P2P systems are broadly of two kinds, structured and unstructured. The tree structured P2P systems used technologies such as distributed hash tables (DHT) and hierarchical clustering can search the required target quickly, however, in a tree, the internal node has a higher load and its leave or crash often causes a large population of its offspring’s problems, so that in the highly dynamic Internet environment the tree structure may still suffer frequent breaks. On the other hand, most widely used unstructured P2P networks rely on central directory servers or massive message flooding, clearly not scalable. So, we consider both of the above systems’ advantages and disadvantages and realize that in the P2P systems on node may fail easily, but that when a number of nodes organized as a set, which we call “super node”, the set is robust. Super nodes can be created and updated aware of topology-aware, and used with simple protocol such as flooding or “servers” to exchange information. Furthermore the entire robust super node can be organized into exquisite tree structure. By using this overlay network architecture, P2P systems are robust, efficient, scalable and secure. The simulation results demonstrated that our architecture greatly reduces the alteration time of the structure while decreasing the average delay time, compared to the common tree structure.

A Derivative Tree-Based P 2 P Interactive Streaming System

Abstract:With the wide spread of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications, P2P technology has been shown to be a promising solution to deploy large-scale media streaming systems. Supporting asynchronous user requests and VCR-like interactions in media streaming systems nevertheless remains a challenging task. In this paper, we introduce a derivative tree-based P2P framework for supporting interactive streaming applications. The proposed scheme includes Distributed Discovery Service for resource location and Derivative Tree-based caching structure for dissemination topology maintenance. By introducing the derivative tree into the system, the impact of dynamic node join/departure could be dramatically reduced. With the assistance of Distributed Hash Table (DHT), the overhead of the resource searching, service reconstruction and overlay maintenance could be alleviated to an acceptable level. Extensive simulations show that the derived tree-based strategy performs well. The overhead of interactive operations in our scheme can be reduced by more than 50% compared to existing P2P media streaming systems.

Abstract:Recently, peer-to-peer (P2P) search technique has become popular in the Web as an alternative to centralized search due to its high scalability and low deployment-cost. However, P2P search systems are known to suffer from the problem of peer dynamics, such as frequent node join/leave and document changes, which cause serious performance degradation. This paper presents the architecture of a P2P search system that supports full-text search in an overlay network with peer dynamics. This architecture, namely HAPS, consists of two layers of peers. The upper layer is a DHT (distributed hash table) network interconnected by some super peers (which we refer to as hubs ). Each hub maintains distributed data structures called search directories , which could be used to guide the query and to control the search cost. The bottom layer consists of clusters of ordinary peers (called providers ), which can receive queries and return relevant results. Extensive experimental results indicate that HAPS can perform searches effectively and efficiently. In addition, the performance comparison illustrates that HAPS outperforms a flat structured system and a hierarchical unstructured system in the environment with peer dynamics.

Abstract:In unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) systems, the mechanism of a peer randomly joining and leaving a P2P network causes a topology mismatch between the P2P logical overlay network and the physical underlying network, incurring a large volume of redundant traffic in the Internet. In order to alleviate the topology mismatch problem, we propose adaptive connection establishment (ACE), an algorithm for building an overlay multicast tree among each source node and the peers within a certain diameter from the source peer and further optimizing the neighbor connections that are not on the tree while retaining the search scope. Our simulation study shows that this approach can effectively solve the mismatch problem and significantly reduce P2P traffic. We further study the trade-offs between the topology optimization rate and the information exchange overhead by changing the diameter used to build the tree.
Scalable and Robust Structured Peer-to-Peer Based on Balanced Kautz Tree

Abstract:In order to improve scalability and reduce maintenance overhead for structured Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems, researchers design optimal architectures with constant degree and logarithmical diameter. The expected topologies, however, require the number of peers to be some given values determined by the average degree and the diameter. Hence, existing designs fail to address the issue due to the fact that 1) we cannot guarantee how many peers to join a P2P system at a given time, and 2) a P2P system is typically dynamic with peers frequently coming and leaving. In this work, we propose BAKE scheme based on balanced Kautz tree structure with logdn diameter and constant degree even the number of peers is an arbitrary value. By keeping a total ordering of peers and employing a robust locality-preserved resource placement strategy, resources that are similar in single or multi-dimensional attributes space are stored on a same peer or neighboring peers. Through analysis and simulations, we show that BAKE achieves optimal diameter and good connectivity as the Kautz digraph does (almost achieves the Moore bound), and supports both exact and range queries efficiently. Indeed, the concepts of balanced Kautz tree and Kautz ring introduced in this work can also be extended and applied to other interconnection networks after minimal modifications, for example, de Bruijn digraph.
Towards Topology-and-Trust-Aware P2P Grid.

Abstract:Grid and P2P are both popular distributed network models nowadays. The grid is a platform to compactly coordinate the distributed resources, while the P2P model assigns an equal position to each peer and allows all the peers to move freely. Because of their different architectures, these two models have their own advantages and limitations, and therefore are used in different applications. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed network model called P2P Grid which hierarchically combines the grid and P2P. The P2P Grid is constructed based on the Globus Toolkit middleware and SW-R2P network topology, in order to absorb their respective advantages, especially in the trust based access control. We also describe the resource location algorithm and peer operation protocols for this SW-R2P based P2P Grid. Finally the simulated experiments show that our P2P Grid model has a great performance not only in efficiency and security, but also in scalability and robustness.
RBTree: A New and Scalable P2P Model Based on Gossiping

Abstract:A major challenge in peer-to-peer systems is the problem of efficiently locating data or resources and scalability. According to the actual practical heterogeneous network system, we explore a fast and scalable super-peer P2P network model based on a rigorous binary tree code algorithm. In our model, if the size of network is small, file lookups are resolved with only one hop. As the systempsilas scale become larger, it can expand automatically based on the super-peerpsilas capability and suit for large scale system. In the worst case, file lookups are resolved with only three hops. Experimental results and theoretical analysis show that the problem of efficiently lookups and scalability in P2P systems are resolved.
A Unified Construction Method of P 2 P Networks with Lower Bound to Support Complex Queries

Abstract:The topological properties of overlay networks are critical for the performance of peer-to-peer (P2P) systems. The size of routing table and the diameter are among the most important parameters which measure the autonomy, efficiency, robustness and load balancing of P2Ps. In order to improve the four features for structured P2P networks, researchers have proposed many optimal designs with desirable degree and diameter. Those designs, however, fail to accurately model the relation between topology diameters and degrees, and they are not independent with each other. To address this issue, we first propose a unified model so as to clearly depict the relation between degree, diameter and the number of the nodes for different kinds of systems. New structures can thus be derived from this model in which search delay is significantly reduced. A dynamic Moore bound is also calculated for exiting P2P systems. We then propose a universal method based on the multi-way trie tree to address the inefficiency caused by peers frequent coming and leaving. Systems based on this method are not restricted by the dynamic bound any more. Our design Phoenix, based on the multi-way trie tree and deBruijn structure, can well support exact query as well as complex queries, such as range queries, multi-attributes queries and multi-dimension data queries. Also, the method used for Phoenix introduced in this paper can also be applied to other networks modeled by our unified model after minimal modifications, for example, hypercube, butterfly, CCC and kautz.

Beyond the Lower Bound: A Unified and Optimal P2P Construction Method

Abstract:The topological properties of overlay networks are critical for the performance of peer-to-peer (P2P) systems. The size of routing table and the diameter are among the most important parameters which measure the autonomy, efficiency, robustness and load balancing of P2Ps, and the Moore bound sets the optimal tradeoff between diameter and degree for any graph. In order to improve the four features for structured P2P networks, researchers have proposed many designs based on the interconnect networks which can approximately achieve the Moore bound. However, the performances of these systems in dynamic environments are far worse than their corresponding interconnect networks in the static environment. Moore bound cannot give a good description for existing P2P systems due to their dynamic features. In this study, therefore, we first prove a new lower bound of the network diameter and average query distance in a highly dynamic environment. The routing latency of the existing systems cannot be more better than the new bound. This is because the existing systems require a fixed number of peers known a priori. P2P systems on the other hand, typically are dynamic, meaning that peers frequently join or leave. To solve the issue, we propose a dynamic multi-way trie tree structure, based on which any interconnect network can be adopted to construct a P2P system. The unified construction method also consists of a series of optimal schemes for P2P systems. DeBruijn and butterfly representing the single and hybrid protocols based on the dynamic multi-way trie tree structure are used to construct two new P2P systems (DPhoenix, BPhoenix) whose performances can exceed the new bound. Also, DPhoenix and BPhoenix can be easily applied to other interconnection networks after minimal modifications, such as, hypercube, kautz, shuffle-exchange and CCC.

Abstract:Summary form only given. In unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) systems, the stochastic peer connection and peers' randomly joining and leaving a P2P network without any knowledge about underlying physical topology can cause serious topology mismatching between the P2P overlay network and the physical underlying network. Some existing techniques have been proposed to address topology mismatching problem without shrink search scope. However, these techniques involve considerable amount of overhead, and have other disadvantages, such as slow convergence speed and synchronization requirement. To address the limits of existing solutions, we propose a scalable bipartite overlay (SBO) among peers in Gnutella-like systems or among the super-peers in KaZaA-like systems. SBO employs an efficient strategy to reduce optimization overhead by intelligently distributing optimization tasks in different peers. Our evaluations show that the total traffic and response time of the queries can be significantly reduced by optimized SBO without shrinking the search scope.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing system such as BitTorrent performs better than traditional client-server system in "flash-crowd" scenario taking advantage of "perpendicular" bandwidth between peer nodes. However large amount of backbone bandwidth in the Internet is consumed by these ubiquitous P2P connections. In this paper, we propose centralized hierarchical peer-node assignment (CHPA) to globally manage P2P traffic by intentionally set up connections within local area network. Experiment result shows that: in our experiment environment, CHPA can achieve higher proportion of local area network traffic while download time of BT is not apparently affected.

Among existing fixed-degree interconnection networks, the Kautz digraph has many distinctive topological properties compared to others. Emergent Peer-to-Peer Multi-Hub Topology

Abstract:In this paper we propose and evaluate an innovative algorithm that enables the creation of Peer-to-Peer network overlays characterized by emergent multi-hubs. This approach generates overlays that balance between the randomness of a graph and the structure of a star network, resulting in networks that not only feature prominent hubs but also exhibit strong resilience to failures. By leveraging principles of preferential attachment and random attachment, our method allows hubs to form spontaneously, offering a decentralized and fault-tolerant solution ideal for applications requiring both low network diameter and high robustness. The protocol is entirely decentralized, operates asynchronously, and depends exclusively on local information. Nodes organically evolve into hubs and remain indistinguishable from other nodes (except in terms of the number of incoming links). The quantity of hubs that emerge can be predetermined by the application as a network parameter.

Abstract:Peer-to-Peer (P2P) communication has attracted significant interest from both academia and industry, and has become a successful communication paradigm for diverse Internet applications, including file sharing, live streaming, and video on demand. Today P2P applications account for over 70 % of the Internet traffic, and the percentage is still growing. P2P has also been used to facilitate the development of such new generation of applications as social networking and cloud computing. Many of these systems use P2P as an underlying engine to boost their performance and to reduce the deployment costs. Examples include the Amazon EC2 cloud platform that opens a dedicated interface for BitTorrent, and LeafWeb P2P gaming platform that allows users to invite others from their Facebook profiles to play online games. Yet there remain a number of challenges for P2P to be a fundamental infrastructure service for pervasive Internet applications: It is necessary to deal with peer churns to provide stable and robust quality-of-service; the inventiveness of individual users and that of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have to be carefully addressed for incorporating a P2P engine; and security issues have been brought to the front end as substantial P2P based attacks, viruses and botnets appear. These problems can be even more severe with the emerging new applications. The objective of this special issue is to summarize the recent research and development toward making P2P a better infrastructure service. After a thorough review process, ten papers were accepted after revision and a second round of review (some with a third round of review). The first set of papers discuss the traffic management and content sharing in peer-to-peer systems. Paper “On the Collaboration of Different Peer-to-Peer Traffic Management Schemas” by Xin Liu, Haiyang Wang, and Lei Zhangaims to solve the pressure on the ISPs from P2P traffic. Different with the existing schemes that only use caching or redirection, they combines the two methods together with a coherent framework, Tod-Cache (Traffic Orientated Distributed Caching). Paper “The Performance and Locality Tradeoff in BitTorrent-like File Sharing Systems” by Wei Huang, Chuan Wu, Zongpeng Li, and Francis C.M. Lau characterizes the performance and locality tradeoff in P2P as a multi-objective b-matching optimization problem and designs fully distributed peer selection algorithms. Paper “BufferBank: A Distributed Cache Infrastructure For Peer-to-peer Application” by Huang Bin, Sun Zhigang, Chen Hongyi, Mao Jianbiao, Zhang Ziwen proposes a distributed P2P caching infrastructure named BufferBank in the edge of network. This infrastructure uses the memory of users at the edge network as the cache space and the authors also provide a number of application interfaces for P2P applications to use the cache space. Abstract:Solutions based on peer-to-peer(P2P) technologies to handle server bottleneck in Client/Server mode are promising for heavy terrain navigation in network GIS.However,current P2P methods only consider peers' bandwidth when selecting peers to communicate,and provide inefficient terrain navigation services.Storage characteristics and data spatio-temporal features are taken into account and a P2P hierarchical structure is proposed for the sharing of massive terrain data.Peers are grouped based on their geographical locations.Peers in the same group are hierarchical according to communication delay of each other.Prototype system is designed.The evaluation results show that the proposed method achieves higher data transmission speed and lower tile feedback delay compared to others.
