Abstract:We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of solitons in model Hamiltonians for Peierls dimerized quasi-one dimensional conducting polymers and commensurate charge density wave systems. The real time equation of motion for the collective coordinate of the soliton and the associated Langevin equation is found in a consistent adiabatic expansion in terms of the ratio of the optical phonon or phason frequency to the soliton mass. The equation of motion for the soliton collective coordinate allows to obtain the frequency dependent soliton conductivity. In lowest order we find that although the coefficient of static friction vanishes, there is dynamical dissipation represented by a non-Markovian dissipative kernel associated with two-phonon processes. The correlation function of the noise in the quantum Langevin equation and the dissipative kernel are related by a generalized quantum fluctuation dissipation relation. To lowest adiabatic order we find that the noise is gaussian, additive and colored. We numerically solve the equations of motion in lowest adiabatic order and compare to the Markovian approximation which is shown to fail both in the $\phi^4$ and the Sine Gordon models even at large temperatures.

Abstract:We introduce a system combining the quadratic self-attractive or composite quadratic-cubic nonlinearity, acting in the combination with the fractional diffraction, which is characterized by its Lévy index $\alpha $. The model applies to a gas of quantum particles moving by Lévy flights, with the quadratic term representing the Lee-Huang-Yang correction to the mean-field interactions. A family of fundamental solitons is constructed in a numerical form, while the dependence of its norm on the chemical potential characteristic is obtained in an exact analytical form. The family of \textit{quasi-Townes solitons}, appearing in the limit case of $\alpha =1/2$, is investigated by means of a variational approximation. A nonlinear lattice, represented by spatially periodical modulation of the quadratic term, is briefly addressed too. The consideration of the interplay of competing quadratic (attractive) and cubic (repulsive) terms with a lattice potential reveals families of single-, double-, and triple-peak gap solitons (GSs) in two finite bandgaps. The competing nonlinearity gives rise to alternating regions of stability and instability of the GS, the stability intervals shrinking with the increase of the number of peaks in the GS.

Parametrically long lifetime of superdiffusion in non-integrable spin chains

Abstract:Superdiffusion is surprisingly easily observed even in systems without the integrability underpinning this phenomenon. Indeed, the classical Heisenberg chain -- one of the simplest many-body systems, and firmly believed to be non-integrable -- evinces a long-lived regime of anomalous, superdiffusive spin dynamics at finite temperature. Similarly, superdiffusion persists for long timescales, even at high temperature, for small perturbations around a related integrable model. Eventually, however, ordinary diffusion is believed to be asymptotically restored. We examine the timescales governing the lifetime of the superdiffusive regime, and argue that it diverges algebraically fast -- both in deviation from the integrable limit, and at low temperature, where we find $t^* \sim T^{-\zeta}$ with an exponent possibly as large as $\zeta = 8$. This can render the crossover to ordinary diffusion practically inaccessible.

Slow crossover from superdiffusion to diffusion in isotropic spin chains

Abstract:Finite-temperature spin transport in integrable isotropic spin chains (i.e., spin chains with continuous nonabelian symmetries) is known to be superdiffusive, with anomalous transport properties displaying remarkable robustness to isotropic integrability-breaking perturbations. Using a discrete-time classical model, we numerically study the crossover to conventional diffusion resulting from both noisy and Floquet isotropic perturbations of strength $\lambda$. We identify an anomalously-long crossover time scale $t_\star \sim \lambda^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha \approx 6$ in both cases. We discuss our results in terms of a kinetic theory of transport that characterizes the lifetimes of large solitons responsible for superdiffusion.

Dynamics of discrete solitons in the fractional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the quasi-Riesz derivative

Abstract:We elaborate a fractional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (FDNLS) equation based on an appropriately modified definition of the Riesz fractional derivative, which is characterized by its Lévy index (LI). This FDNLS equation represents a novel discrete system, in which the nearest-neighbor coupling is combined with long-range interactions, that decay as the inverse square of the separation between lattice sites. The system may be realized as an array of parallel quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates composed of atoms or small molecules carrying, respectively, a permanent magnetic or electric dipole moment. The dispersion relation (DR) for lattice waves and the corresponding propagation band in the system's linear spectrum are found in an exact form for all values of LI. The DR is consistent with the continuum limit, differing in the range of wavenumbers. Formation of single-site and two-site discrete solitons is explored, starting from the anti-continuum limit and continuing the analysis in the numerical form up to the existence boundary of the discrete solitons. Stability of the solitons is identified in terms of eigenvalues for small perturbations, and verified in direct simulations. Mobility of the discrete solitons is considered too, by means of an estimate of the system's Peierls-Nabarro potential barrier, and with the help of direct simulations. Collisions between persistently moving discrete solitons are also studied.

Unstable dynamics of solitary traveling waves in a lattice with long-range interactions

Abstract:In this work we revisit the existence, stability and dynamics of unstable traveling solitary waves in the context of lattice dynamical systems. We consider a nonlinear lattice of an $\alpha$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam type with the additional feature of all-to-all harmonic long-range interactions whose strength decays exponentially with distance. The competition between the nonlinear nearest-neighbor terms and the longer-range linear ones yields two parameter regimes where the dependence of the energy $H$ of the traveling waves on their velocity $c$ is non-monotonic and multivalued, respectively. We examine both cases, and identify the exact (up to a prescribed numerical tolerance) traveling waves. To investigate the stability of the obtained solutions, we compute their Floquet multipliers, thinking of the traveling wave problem as a periodic one modulo shifts. We show that in the general case when the relationship between $H$ and $c$ is not single-valued, the sufficient but not necessary criterion for stability change is $H'(s)=0$, where $s$ is the parameter along the energy-velocity curve. Perturbing the unstable solutions along the corresponding eigenvectors, we identify two different scenarios of the dynamics of their transition to stable branches. In the first one, the perturbed wave slows down after expelling a dispersive wave. The second scenario involves an increase in the velocity of the perturbed wave accompanied by the formation of a slower small-amplitude traveling solitary wave.

Two-dimensional fractional discrete NLS equations: dispersion relations, rogue waves, fundamental and vortex solitons

Abstract:We introduce physically relevant new models of two-dimensional (2D) fractional lattice media accounting for the interplay of fractional intersite coupling and onsite self-focusing. Our approach features novel discrete fractional operators based on an appropriately modified definition of the continuous Riesz fractional derivative. The model of the 2D isotropic lattice employs the discrete fractional Laplacian, whereas the 2D anisotropic system incorporates discrete fractional derivatives acting independently along orthogonal directions with different Lévy indices (LIs). We derive exact linear dispersion relations (DRs), and identify spectral bands that permit linear modes to exist, finding them to be similar to their continuous counterparts, apart from differences in the wavenumber range. Additionally, the modulational instability in the discrete models is studied in detail, and, akin to the linear DRs, it is found to align with the situation in continuous models. This consistency highlights the nature of our newly defined discrete fractional derivatives. Furthermore, using Gaussian inputs, we produce a variety of rogue-wave structures. By means of numerical methods, we systematically construct families of 2D fundamental and vortex solitons, and examine their stability. Fundamental solitons maintain the stability due to the discrete nature of the interactions, preventing the onset of the critical and supercritical collapse. On the other hand, vortex solitons are unstable in the isotropic lattice model. However, the anisotropic one -- in particular, its symmetric version with equal LIs acting in both directions -- maintains stable vortex solitons with winding numbers $S=1$ and $S=3$. The detailed results stress the robustness of the newly defined discrete fractional Laplacian in supporting well-defined soliton modes in the 2D lattice media.

Dispersive Hydrodynamics of Soliton Condensates for the Korteweg-de Vries Equation

Abstract:We consider large-scale dynamics of non-equilibrium dense soliton gas for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in the special "condensate" limit. We prove that in this limit the integro-differential kinetic equation for the spectral density of states reduces to the N-phase KdV-Whitham modulation equations derived by Flaschka et al. (Commun Pure Appl Math 33(6):739-784, 1980) and Lax and Levermore (Commun Pure Appl Math 36(5):571-593, 1983). We consider Riemann problems for soliton condensates and construct explicit solutions of the kinetic equation describing generalized rarefaction and dispersive shock waves. We then present numerical results for "diluted" soliton condensates exhibiting rich incoherent behaviors associated with integrable turbulence.

Abstract:We consider a version of the classical Hamiltonian Fermi–Pasta–Ulam (FPU) problem with a trilinear force–strain relation of soft–hard–soft type that is in general non-symmetric. In addition to the classical spatially localized solitary waves, such hardening–softening model also exhibits supersonic kinks and finite-amplitude, spatially delocalized flat-top solitary waves that acquire the structure of a kink–antikink bundle when their velocity approaches the kink limit. Exploiting the fact that traveling waves are periodic modulo shift by a lattice spacing, we compute these solutions as fixed points of the corresponding nonlinear map and investigate how their properties depend on the parameter measuring the asymmetry of the problem. In a particularly interesting case when one of the soft regimes has zero elastic modulus, we obtain explicit solutions for sufficiently slow solitary waves. In contrast to conventional delocalization in the sonic limit, the corresponding compact structures mounted on a constant background become localized at the lattice scale as their velocity tends to zero. Numerical simulations of Riemann-type initial value problem in this degenerate limit show the emergence of Whitham shocks that involve periodic trains of solitary waves. We investigate stability of the obtained solutions using direct numerical simulations and Floquet analysis. We also obtain explicit solutions for a quasicontinuum model that captures the most important features of the discrete problem.

Time-dependent dynamics in the confined lattice Lorentz gas

Abstract:We study a lattice model describing the non-equilibrium dynamics emerging from the pulling of a tracer particle through a disordered medium occupied by randomly placed obstacles. The model is considered in a restricted geometry pertinent for the investigation of confinement-induced effects. We analytically derive exact results for the characteristic function of the moments valid to first order in the obstacle density. By calculating the velocity autocorrelation function and its long-time tail we find that already in equilibrium the system exhibits a dimensional crossover. This picture is further confirmed by the approach of the drift velocity to its terminal value attained in the non-equilibrium stationary state. At large times the diffusion coefficient is affected by both the driving and confinement in a way that we quantify analytically. The force-induced diffusion coefficient depends sensitively on the presence of confinement. The latter is able to modify qualitatively the non-analytic behavior in the force observed for the unbounded model. We then examine the fluctuations of the tracer particle along the driving force. We show that in the intermediate regime superdiffusive anomalous behavior persists even in the presence of confinement. Stochastic simulations are employed in order to test the validity of the analytic results, exact to first order in the obstacle density and valid for arbitrary force and confinement.

Slow transport and bound states for spinless fermions with long-range Coulomb interactions on one-dimensional lattices

Abstract:We study transport and relaxation of spinless fermions with long-range Coulomb interactions at high temperatures through numerical simulations of out-of-equilibrium dynamics. We find that the transport and relaxation are continuously slowing down for increasing coupling $V$, and that there is a transition in the type of transport. For intermediate couplings, the system exhibits normal diffusive transport but the time scale for the onset of that is long. For large couplings, it exhibits subdiffusive transport, while at the same time the relaxation time diverges exponentially with system lengths, featuring an MBL-like phase. We attribute the slow transport to formation of slow bound states and stable clusters of particles. For few-particle systems we prove existence, visualize the slowness and analyze collision properties of the bound states. For many particles at high densities there should be a hierarchy of clusters of particles on many different length scales. We argue that at large couplings the average maximal size of the stable clusters should scale linearly with the length of the lattice, which is in accordance with the MBL-like behavior.

Anomalous diffusion in the Long-Range Haken-Strobl-Reineker model

Abstract:We analyze the propagation of excitons in a $d$-dimensional lattice with power-law hopping $\propto 1/r^\alpha$ in the presence of dephasing, described by a generalized Haken-Strobl-Reineker model. We show that in the strong dephasing (quantum Zeno) regime the dynamics is described by a classical master equation for an exclusion process with long jumps. In this limit, we analytically compute the spatial distribution, whose shape changes at a critical value of the decay exponent $\alpha_{\rm cr} = (d+2)/2$. The exciton always diffuses anomalously: a superdiffusive motion is associated to a Lévy stable distribution with long-range algebraic tails for $\alpha\leq\alpha_{\rm cr}$, while for $\alpha > \alpha_{\rm cr}$ the distribution corresponds to a surprising mixed Gaussian profile with long-range algebraic tails, leading to the coexistence of short-range diffusion and long-range Lévy-flights. In the many-exciton case, we demonstrate that, starting from a domain-wall exciton profile, algebraic tails appear in the distributions for any $\alpha$, which affects thermalization: the longer the hopping range, the faster equilibrium is reached. Our results are directly relevant to experiments with cold trapped ions, Rydberg atoms and supramolecular dye aggregates. They provide a way to realize an exclusion process with long jumps experimentally.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing Schr$\ddot{\text{o}}$dinger (NLS) equation with finite density initial data \begin{align} i\sigma_d^{(out)}) +t^{-1/2} h(x,t) \right)+\mathcal{O}\left(t^{-3/4}\right),$$ whose leading term is $N$-soliton solutions; the second $t^{-1/2}$ order term is soliton-soliton and soliton-radiation interactions; and the third term $\mathcal{O}(t^{-3/4})$ is a residual error from a $\overline\partial$-equation. Additionally, the asymptotic stability property for the N-soliton solutions of the defocusing NLS equation sufficiently is obtained.

Swallow-tail dispersions of moving solitons in a two-dimensional fermionic superfluid

Abstract:Soliton-like localised wave solutions in a two-dimensional Fermi superfluid are studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in the BCS regime of weak pairing interactions. The dispersion relations of these solitons are found to exhibit a peculiar swallow-tail shape, with cusps and multiple branches. The effective mass of the solitons is found to diverge and change sign at the cusp. This behavior is in contrast to the smooth dispersion relations and negative effective masses of solitons in the three-dimensional Fermi superfluid. The swallow-tail dispersion relations are shown to be a consequence of counterflow of the superfluid and sign-changing contributions to the superfluid current from different transverse momenta in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. The results are relevant for the understanding of solitonic excitations in two-dimensional Fermi superfluids, such as ultracold atomic gases and high-temperature superconductors.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation with finite density type initial data. With the $\bar{\partial}$ generalization of the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou, we extrapolate the leading order approximation to the solution of mKdV for large time in the solitonic space-time region $|x/t+4|<2$, and we give bounds for the error which decay as $t\rightarrow\infty$ for a general class of initial data whose difference from the non-vanishing background possesses a fixed number of finite moments. Our results provide a verification of the soliton resolution conjecture and asymptotic stability of $N$-soliton solutions for mKdV equation with finite density type initial data.
Solitons in Quasiperiodic Lattices with Fractional Diffraction

Abstract:We study the dynamics of solitons under the action of one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice potentials, fractional diffraction, and nonlinearity. The formation and stability of the solitons is investigated in the framework of the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. By means of variational and numerical methods, we identify conditions under which stable solitons emerge, stressing the effect of the fractional diffraction on soliton properties. The reported findings contribute to the understanding of the soliton behavior in complex media, with implications for topological photonics and matter-wave dynamics in lattice potentials.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamics of an interesting class of vector solitons in the long-wave–short-wave resonance interaction (LSRI) system. The model that we consider here describes the nonlinear interaction of long wave and two short waves and it generically appears in several physical settings. To derive this class of nondegenerate vector soliton solutions we adopt the Hirota bilinear method with the more general form of admissible seed solutions with nonidentical distinct propagation constants. We express the resultant fundamental as well as multisoliton solutions in a compact way using Gram-determinants. The general fundamental vector soliton solution possesses several interesting properties. For instance, the double-hump or a single-hump profile structure including a special flattop profile form results in when the soliton propagates in all the components with identical velocities. Interestingly, in the case of nonidentical velocities, the soliton number is increased to two in the long-wave component, while a single-humped soliton propagates in the two short-wave components. We establish through a detailed analysis that the nondegenerate multisolitons in contrast to the already known vector solitons (with identical wave numbers) can undergo three types of elastic collision scenarios: (i) shape-preserving, (ii) shape-altering, and (iii) a shape-changing collision, depending on the choice of the soliton parameters. Here, by shape-altering we mean that the structure of the nondegenerate soliton gets modified slightly during the collision process, whereas if the changes occur appreciably then we call such a collision as shape-changing collision. We distinguish each of the collision scenarios, by deriving a zero phase shift criterion with the help of phase constants. Very importantly, the shape-changing behavior of the nondegenerate vector solitons is observed in the long-wave mode also, along with corresponding changes in the short-wave modes, and this nonlinear phenomenon has not been observed in the already known vector solitons. In addition, we point out the coexistence of nondegenerate and degenerate solitons simultaneously along with the associated physical consequences. We also indicate the physical realizations of these general vector solitons in nonlinear optics, hydrodynamics, and Bose-Einstein condensates. Dissipative localised structures for the complex Discrete Ginzburg-Landau equation

Abstract:The discrete complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is a fundamental model for the dynamics of nonlinear lattices incorporating competitive dissipation and energy gain effects. Such mechanisms are of particular importance for the study of survival/destruction of localised structures in many physical situations. In this work, we prove that in the discrete complex Ginzburg-Landau equation dissipative solitonic waveforms persist for significant times by introducing a dynamical transitivity argument. This argument is based on a combination of the notions of ``inviscid limits'' and of the ``continuous dependence of solutions on their initial data'', between the dissipative system and its Hamiltonian counterparts. Thereby, it establishes closeness of the solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau lattice to those of the conservative ideals described by the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger and Ablowitz-Ladik lattices. Such a closeness holds when the initial conditions of the systems are chosen to be sufficiently small in the suitable metrics and for small values of the dissipation or gain strengths. Our numerical findings are in excellent agreement with the analytical predictions for the dynamics of the dissipative bright, dark or even Peregrine-type solitonic waveforms.

Abstract:The Hirota equation is one of the integrable higher-order extensions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and can describe the ultra-short optical pulse propagation in the form $iq_t+\alpha(q_{xx}+ 2|q|^2q)+i\beta (q_{xxx}+ 6|q|^2q_x)=0,\, (x,t)\in\mathbb{R}^2\, (\alpha,\,\beta\in\mathbb{R})$. In this paper, we analytically explore the asymptotic behaviors of a soliton gas for the Hirota equation including the complex modified KdV equation, in which the soliton gas is regarded as the limit $N\to \infty$ of $N$-soliton solutions, and characterized using the Riemann-Hilbert problem with discrete spectra restricted in the intervals $(ia, ib)\cup (-ib, -ia)\, (0<a<b)$. We find that this soliton gas tends slowly to the Jaocbian elliptic wave solution with an error $\mathcal{O}(|x|^{-1})$ (zero exponentially quickly ) as $x\to -\infty$ ($x\to +\infty$). We also present the long-time asymptotics of the soliton gas under the different velocity conditions: $x/t>4\beta b^2,\, \xi_c<x/t<4\beta b^2,\, x/t<\xi_c$. Moreover, we analyze the property of the soliton gas for the case of the discrete spectra filling uniformly a quadrature domain.
