Abstract:This paper is purely expositional. The statement of the Kuratowski graph planarity criterion is simple and well-known. However, its classical proof is not easy. In this paper we present the Makarychev proof (with further simplifications by Prasolov, Telishev, Zaslavski and the author) which is possibly the simplest. In the Rusian version before the proof we present all the necessary definitions, and afterwards we state some close results on graphs and more general spaces. The paper is accessible for students familiar with the notion of a graph, and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians.

Abstract:We give a short topological proof of coherence for categorified non-symmetric operads by using the fact that the diagrams involved form the 1-skeleton of simply connected CW complexes. We also obtain a "one-step" topological proof of Mac Lane's coherence theorem for symmetric monoidal categories, as suggested by Kapranov in 1993. Our analysis is based on a notion of combinatorial homotopy, which we further study in the special case of polyhedral complexes, leading to a second geometrical proof of coherence which is very close to Mac Lane's original argument. We use Morse theory to show that this second method is (strictly) less general than the first. We provide a detailed analysis of how both methods allow us to deduce these two categorical coherence results and discuss possible generalizations to higher categories.

Abstract:Given a bridgeless graph G, the well-known cycle double cover conjecture posits that there is a list of cycles of G, such that every edge appears in exactly two cycles. In this paper, we prove the cycle double cover conjecture. More precisely, we prove the Goddyn's conjecture as a stronger version of the cycle double cover conjecture which states that every cycle in G is a member of some cycle double cover of G.

Abstract:We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.

Planar Lombardi Drawings for Subcubic Graphs

Abstract:We prove that every planar graph with maximum degree three has a planar drawing in which the edges are drawn as circular arcs that meet at equal angles around every vertex. Our construction is based on the Koebe-Thurston-Andreev circle packing theorem, and uses a novel type of Voronoi diagram for circle packings that is invariant under Moebius transformations, defined using three-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. We also use circle packing to construct planar Lombardi drawings of a special class of 4-regular planar graphs, the medial graphs of polyhedral graphs, and we show that not every 4-regular planar graph has a Lombardi drawing. We have implemented our algorithm for 3-connected planar cubic graphs.

On $k$-planar Graphs without Short Cycles

Abstract:We study the impact of forbidding short cycles to the edge density of $k$-planar graphs; a $k$-planar graph is one that can be drawn in the plane with at most $k$ crossings per edge. Specifically, we consider three settings, according to which the forbidden substructures are $3$-cycles, $4$-cycles or both of them (i.e., girth $\ge 5$). For all three settings and all $k\in\{1,2,3\}$, we present lower and upper bounds on the maximum number of edges in any $k$-planar graph on $n$ vertices. Our bounds are of the form $c\,n$, for some explicit constant $c$ that depends on $k$ and on the setting. For general $k \geq 4$ our bounds are of the form $c\sqrt{k}n$, for some explicit constant $c$. These results are obtained by leveraging different techniques, such as the discharging method, the recently introduced density formula for non-planar graphs, and new upper bounds for the crossing number of $2$-- and $3$-planar graphs in combination with corresponding lower bounds based on the Crossing Lemma.

The maximum number of odd cycles in a planar graph

Abstract:How many copies of a fixed odd cycle, $C_{2m+1}$, can a planar graph contain? We answer this question asymptotically for $m\in\{2,3,4\}$ and prove a bound which is tight up to a factor of $3/2$ for all other values of $m$. This extends the prior results of Cox--Martin and Lv et al. on the analogous question for even cycles. Our bounds result from a reduction to the following maximum likelihood question: which probability mass $\mu$ on the edges of some clique maximizes the probability that $m$ edges sampled independently from $\mu$ form either a cycle or a path?

Abstract:A conjecture by Rafla from 1988 asserts that every simple drawing of the complete graph $K_n$ admits a plane Hamiltonian cycle. It turned out that already the existence of much simpler non-crossing substructures in such drawings is hard to prove. Recent progress was made by Aichholzer et al. and by Suk and Zeng who proved the existence of a plane path of length $\Omega(\log n / \log \log n)$ and of a plane matching of size $\Omega(n^{1/2})$ in every simple drawing of $K_{n}$.

A Planarity Test via Construction Sequences

Abstract:Optimal linear-time algorithms for testing the planarity of a graph are well-known for over 35 years. However, these algorithms are quite involved and recent publications still try to give simpler linear-time tests. We give a simple reduction from planarity testing to the problem of computing a certain construction of a 3-connected graph. The approach is different from previous planarity tests; as key concept, we maintain a planar embedding that is 3-connected at each point in time. The algorithm runs in linear time and computes a planar embedding if the input graph is planar and a Kuratowski-subdivision otherwise.

Abstract:A visualized graph is a powerful tool for data analysis and synthesis tasks. In this case, the task of visualization constitutes not only in displaying vertices and edges according to the graph representation, but also in ensuring that the result is visually simple and comprehensible for a human. Thus, the visualization process involves solving several problems, one of which is the problem of constructing a topological drawing of a planar part of a non-planar graph with a minimum number of removed edges. In this manuscript, we consider a mathematical model for representing the topological drawing of a graph, which is based on methods of the theory of vertex rotation with the induction of simple cycles that satisfy the Mac Lane planarity criterion. It is shown that the topological drawing of a non-planar graph can be constructed on the basis of a selected planar part of the graph. The topological model of a graph drawing allows us to reduce the brute-force enumeration problem of identifying a plane graph to a discrete optimization problem - searching for a subset of the set of isometric cycles of the graph that satisfy the zero value of the Mac Lane's functional. To isolate the planar part of the graph, a new computational method has been developed based on linear algebra and the algebra of structural numbers. The proposed method has polynomial computational complexity.

Abstract:Given a bridgeless graph $G$, the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture posits that there is a list of cycles of $G$, such that every edge appears in exactly two cycles on the list. This conjecture was originally posed independently in 1973 by Szekeres and 1979 by Seymour. In 1985, Jaeger demonstrated that it is sufficient to prove in the case that $G$ is a cubic graph. We here present a proof that every bridgeless cubic graph has a cycle double cover by analyzing certain kinds of cycles in the line graph of $G$. Further, in the case that $G$ is cubic, we prove the stronger conjecture that given a bridgeless graph $G$ and a cycle $C$ in $G$, then there exists a cycle double cover of $G$ containing $C$.
The Complexity of Planar Boolean #CSP with Complex Weights

Abstract:We prove a complexity dichotomy theorem for symmetric complex-weighted Boolean #CSP when the constraint graph of the input must be planar. The problems that are #P-hard over general graphs but tractable over planar graphs are precisely those with a holographic reduction to matchgates. This generalizes a theorem of Cai, Lu, and Xia for the case of real weights. We also obtain a dichotomy theorem for a symmetric arity 4 signature with complex weights in the planar Holant framework, which we use in the proof of our #CSP dichotomy. In particular, we reduce the problem of evaluating the Tutte polynomial of a planar graph at the point (3,3) to counting the number of Eulerian orientations over planar 4-regular graphs to show the latter is #P-hard. This strengthens a theorem by Huang and Lu to the planar setting. Our proof techniques combine new ideas with refinements and extensions of existing techniques. These include planar pairings, the recursive unary construction, the anti-gadget technique, and pinning in the Hadamard basis.

Abstract:In their solution to the orchard-planting problem, Green and Tao established a structure theorem which proves that in a line arrangement in the real projective plane with few double points, most lines are tangent to the dual curve of a cubic curve. We provide geometric arguments to prove that in the case of a simplicial arrangement, the aforementioned cubic curve cannot be irreducible. It follows that Grünbaum's conjectural asymptotic classification of simplicial arrangements holds under the additional hypothesis of a linear bound on the number of double points.

Abstract:We provide elementary proofs of Lemmas 7.1 and 7.4 appearing in "The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture and the Little Prince", by B. Kloeckner and G. Kuperberg. The Lemmas play an important role in the derivation of novel isoperimetric inequalities. The original proofs relied on Sage, a symbolic algebra package, to factor certain algebraic varieties into irreducible components.

Abstract:We introduce the Density Formula for (topological) drawings of graphs in the plane or on the sphere, which relates the number of edges, vertices, crossings, and sizes of cells in the drawing. We demonstrate its capability by providing several applications: we prove tight upper bounds on the edge density of various beyond-planar graph classes, including so-called $k$-planar graphs with $k=1,2$, fan-crossing / fan-planar graphs, $k$-bend RAC-graphs with $k=0,1,2$, quasiplanar graphs, and $k^+$-real face graphs. In some cases ($1$-bend and $2$-bend RAC-graphs and fan-crossing / fan-planar graphs), we thereby obtain the first tight upper bounds on the edge density of the respective graph classes. In other cases, we give new streamlined and significantly shorter proofs for bounds that were already known in the literature. Thanks to the Density Formula, all of our proofs are mostly elementary counting and mostly circumvent the typical intricate case analysis found in earlier proofs. Further, in some cases (simple and non-homotopic quasiplanar graphs), our alternative proofs using the Density Formula lead to the first tight lower bound examples.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that balanced characteristic functions of canonical cliques in a Paley graph of square order P (q) span the −1+q 2 -eigenspace of the graph. Abstract:We show the $K(\pi,1)$-conjecture holds for Artin groups whose Dynkin diagrams are complete bipartite (edge labels are allowed to be arbitrary), answering a question of J. McCammond. Along the way, we treat several related families of hyperbolic type Artin groups, namely the $K(\pi,1)$-conjecture holds for all 3-dimensional hyperbolic type Artin groups, except one single example with Dynkin diagram $[3,5,3]$; and the conjecture holds for all quasi-Lannér hyperbolic type Artin groups up to dimension 4. We also treat several higher dimensional families. Most of the article is about developing new methods of understanding combinatorial minimal fillings of certain types of cycles in spherical Deligne complexes or relative Artin complexes, via non-positive curvature geometry. Then we combine this with an approached to the $K(\pi,1)$-conjecture introduced by a previous article of the author to settle new cases of $K(\pi,1)$-conjecture. In the appendix we list some related open questions and conjectures.
