Abstract:We report the discovery of a giant, loop-like stellar structure around the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4013. This arcing feature extends 6 arcmin (~26 kpc in projected distance) northeast from the center and 3 arcmin (~=12 kpc) from the disk plane; likely related features are also apparent on the southwest side of the disk, extending to 4 arcmin (~17 kpc). The detection of this low surface-brightness muR= 27.0+0.3-0.2 mag/sqarcsec) structure is independently confirmed in three separate datasets from three different telescopes. Although its true three dimensional geometry is unknown, the sky- projected morphology of this structure displays a match with the theoretical predictions for the edge-on, projected view of a stellar tidal streams of a dwarf satellite moving in a low inclined (~25deg), nearly circular orbit. Using the recent model of the Monoceros tidal stream in the Milky Way by Penarrubia et al. as template, we find that the progenitor system may have been a galaxy with an initial mass 6*10^8 Msun, of which current position and final fate is unknown. According to this simulation, the tidal stream may be approximately ~2.8 Gyr of age. Our results demonstrate that NGC 4013, previously considered a prototypical isolated disk galaxy in spite of having one of the most prominent HI warps detected thus far, may have in fact suffered a recent minor merger. This discovery highlights that undisturbed disks at high surface brightness levels in the optical but warped in HI maps may in fact reveal complex signatures of recent accretion events in deep photometric surveys.

Abstract:Context. The formation of intracluster light and extended halos around brightest cluster galaxies is closely related to morphological transformation, tidal stripping, and the disruption of galaxies in clusters. Aims. Here we look for observational evidence to characterize these processes, by studying the morphology and kinematics of the diffuse light in the core of the Hydra I cluster. Methods. With V-band surface photometry, we derive the structural parameters (Sersic index n, effective radius Re, b/a, and major axis position angle PA) of the two giant elliptical galaxies NGC 3311 and NGC 3309 in the cluster core. We construct a two-dimensional photometric model, and investigate the diffuse light structures in the residual image after subtracting the two-dimensional model. We also analyze deep long-slit spectra, and establish a link between the structures in the light distribution, the absorption-line kinematics, and the line-of-sight velocity distributions of nearby galaxies and planetary nebulae (PNs). Results. The central galaxy NGC 3311 is surrounded by an extended, symmetric outer halo with n = 10 and an additional, off-centered envelope whose centroid is shifted by about 50′′ to the north-east. Its luminosity LV = 1.2 × 1010 (±6.0 × 108) L⊙ corresponds to ~50% of the luminosity of the symmetric halo in the same region (~15% of its entire luminosity). The velocity dispersion of the halo rises to cluster core values, ~400−500 km s-1, for R > 20′′. On the basis of measured PN velocities, at least part of the off-centered envelope consists of high-velocity accreted stars. We also discover two tidal streams in the cluster center, emerging from the dwarf galaxy HCC 026 and the S0 galaxy HCC 007. The HCC 026 stream is redshifted by ~ 1200 km s-1 with respect to NGC 3311 (VN3311 ≃ 3800 km s-1), as for HCC 026 itself, a fraction of PNs in the off-centered envelope, and several other dwarf galaxies nearby. The stars in one of the HCC 026 tails are known to be consistent with the low-metallicity population of HCC 026, and our photometry shows that this galaxy is almost dissolved by the tidal field. The tidal stream around HCC 007 extends over at least ~110 kpc, is fairly thick, and is brighter on the side of the asymmetric outer halo of NGC 3311, which it may join. Its luminosity is several 109 L⊙, similar to the luminosity of the stripped-down galaxy HCC 007. The redshift of the stream is determined from a few PN velocities and is similar to those of both HCC 007 and HCC 026. Conclusions. An entire group of small galaxies is currently falling through the core of the Hydra I cluster; these galaxies have already been partially dissolved by the strong tidal field. Their light is being added to the outer halo and intracluster light around the cD galaxy NGC 3311. The Hydra I cluster provides a vivid example of the morphological transformation and tidal dissolution of galaxies in clusters.

Abstract:Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occur when a star or substellar object passes close enough to a galaxy's supermassive black hole to be disrupted by tidal forces. NGC 4845 (d - 17 Mpc) was host to a TDE, IGR J12580 vertical bar 0134, detected in 2010 November. Its proximity offers us a unique close-up of the TDE and its aftermath. We discuss new Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations, which show that the radio flux from the active nucleus created by the TDE has decayed in a manner consistent with predictions from a jet-circumnuclear medium interaction model. This model explains the source's broadband spectral evolution, which shows a spectral peak that has moved from the submillimeter (at the end of 2010) to GHz radio frequencies (in 2011-2013) to < 1 GHz in 2015. The milliarcsecond-scale core is circularly polarized at 1.5 GHz but not at 5 GHz, consistent with the model. The VLBA images show a complex structure at 1.5 GHz that includes an east-west extension that is similar to 40 mas (3 pc) long, as well as a resolved component that is 52 mas (4.1 pc) northwest of the flat-spectrum core, which is all that can be seen at 5 GHz. If ejected in 2010, the northwest component must have had v = 0.96c over five years. However, this is unlikely, as our model suggests strong deceleration to speeds < 0.5c within months and a much smaller, sub-parsec size. In this interpretation, the northwest component could have either a non-nuclear origin or be from an earlier event.
A Young Blue Tidal Stream in NGC 5128

Abstract:Stellar streams in galaxy halos are the natural consequence of a history of merging and accretion. We present evidence for a blue tidal stream of young stars in the nearest giant elliptical galaxy, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). Using optical UBVR color maps, unsharp masking, and adaptive histogram equalization, we detect a blue arc in the northwest portion of the galaxy that traces a partial ellipse with an apocenter of 8 kpc. We also report the discovery of numerous young star clusters that are associated with the arc. The brightest of these clusters is spectroscopically confirmed, has an age of similar to350 Myr, and may be a proto-globular cluster. It is likely that this arc, which is distinct from the surrounding shell system and the young jet-related stars in the northeast, is a tidally disrupted stellar stream orbiting the galaxy. Both the age derived from the integrated optical colors of the stream and its dynamical disruption timescale have values of 200-400 Myr. We propose that this stream of young stars was formed when a dwarf irregular galaxy, or similar-sized gas fragment, underwent a tidally triggered burst of star formation as it fell into NGC 5128 and was disrupted similar to300 Myr ago. The stars and star clusters in this stream will eventually disperse and become part of the main body of NGC 5128, suggesting that the infall of gas-rich dwarfs plays a role in the building of stellar halos and globular cluster systems.
Cannibalization and Rebirth in the NGC5387 System. I. The Stellar Stream & Star Forming Region

Abstract:We have identified a low surface brightness stellar stream from visual inspection of SDSS imaging for the edge-on, spiral galaxy NGC5387. A blue overdensity was also identified in SDSS coincident with the stream intersection with the NGC5387 disk. The overdensity was also detected in the GALEX Deep Imaging Survey and found to contribute 38% of the total FUV integrated flux from NGC5387, which suggests that the region is actively forming stars. Deeper imaging was acquired with the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) in the B, V, and R filters that confirmed the presence of both the stellar stream and the blue overdensity. Analysis of the VATT photometry indicates the stellar stream is red in color, B-V = 0.7, and has a stellar mass of 6x10^8 M$_{\odot}$, which implies a merger ratio of 1:50. Assessment of the stream morphology suggests that the merger event has a circular radius, R~16 kpc, the stream formed in ~400 Myr, and the progenitor had a total mass of ~2x10 M$_{\odot}$. Spectroscopy from LBT+MODS1 was used to determine that the blue overdensity is at the same redshift as NGC5387, consists of young stellar populations (~10 Myr), is metal-poor (12 + log(O/H) = 8.03), and forming stars at an enhanced rate (~1-3 M$_{\odot}$/year) given its total stellar mass (2x10^7 M$_{\odot}$). Several interpretations are posited to explain these observational data, of which the most likely are (i) that the blue overdensity is a region of enhanced star formation in the outer disk of NGC5387 induced by the minor accretion event, and (ii) that the blue overdensity is the progenitor of the stellar stream undergoing a period of enhanced star formation as a result of its interaction with NGC5387. Confirmation and theoretical exploration of these scenarios are presented in a companion paper.

Multiwavelength Study of an X-ray Tidal Disruption Event Candidate in NGC 5092

Abstract:We present multiwavelength studies of a transient X-ray source, XMMSL1 J131952.3+225958, associated with the galaxy NGC 5092 at $z=0.023$ detected in the XMM-Newton SLew survey (XMMSL). The source brightened in the 0.2--2 keV band by a factor of $>20$ in 2005 as compared with previous flux limits and then faded by a factor of $>200$ as observed with it XMM-Newton in 2013 and with it Swift in 2018. At the flaring state, the X-ray spectrum can be modeled with a blackbody at a temperature of $\sim$ 60 eV and an overall luminosity of $\sim$ $1.5 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. A UV flare and optical flare were also detected with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, respectively, within several months of the X-ray flare, whose nonstellar UV--optical spectrum can be described with a blackbody at a temperature of $\sim$ $(1-2) \times 10^4$ K and a luminosity of $\sim$ $(2-6) \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Interestingly, mid-infrared monitoring observations of NGC 5092 with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer 5--13 yr later show a continuous flux decline. These dramatic variability properties, from the X-ray through UV and optical to infrared, appear to be orderly, suggestive of a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE) by a massive black hole, confirming the postulation by Kanner et al.(2013). This TDE candidate belongs to a rare sample with contemporaneous bright emission detected in the X-ray, UV, and optical, which are later echoed by dust-reprocessed light in the mid-infrared. The black hole has a mass of $\sim$ $5 \times 10^{7} \rm M_{\odot}$, residing in a galaxy that is dominated by a middle-aged stellar population of 2.5 Gyr.

Abstract:New, deep HST photometry allowed us to identify and study eight compact and bright (M_V< -5.8) star clusters in the outskirts of the star-forming isolated dwarf galaxy NGC5238 (M_*= 10^8 M_sun). Five of these clusters are new discoveries, and six appear projected onto, and/or aligned with the tidal tails recently discovered around this galaxy. The clusters are partially resolved into stars and their colour magnitude diagrams reveal a well developed red giant branch, implying ages older than 1-2~Gyr. Their integrated luminosity and structural parameters are typical of classical globular clusters and one of them has M_V=-10.56 +/- 0.07, as bright as Omega Cen, the brightest globular cluster of the Milky Way. Since the properties of this cluster are in the range spanned by those of nuclear star clusters we suggest that it may be the nuclear remnant of the disrupted satellite of NGC5238 that produced the observed tidal tails.

Abstract:Group galaxies very often show distinct signs of interaction with both companion galaxies and the intragroup medium. X-ray observations are particularly helpful because they provide information on the temperatures and the densities of the hot gas in galaxies and intergalactic space. This can put important constraints on the nature and timescales of these interactions. We use the XMM-Newton X-ray observations of NGC 3627 in the Leo Triplet galaxy group to explain peculiar features visible in the polarized radio maps. We analyzed soft X-ray (0.2-1 keV) emission from NGC 3627 to study the distribution of the hot gas and its temperature in different areas of the galaxy. Any change throughout the disk can reflect distortions visible in the radio polarized emission. We also studied two bright point sources that are probably tightly linked to the evolution of the galaxy. We find an increase in the temperature of the hot gas in the area of the polarized radio ridge in the western arm of the galaxy. In the eastern part of the disk we find two ultra-luminous X-ray sources. We note a large hot gas temperature difference (by a factor of 2) between the two bar ends. The polarized radio ridge in the western arm of NGC 3627 is most likely formed by ram-pressure effects caused by the movement of the galaxy through the intragroup medium. To explain the distortions visible in the eastern part of the disk in polarized radio maps, the asymmetry of the bar, and the distortion of the eastern arm, we propose a recent collision of NGC 3627 with a dwarf companion galaxy.

The creation of a massive UCD by tidal threshing from NGC 936

Abstract:We study a compact nucleus embedded in an early-type dwarf galaxy, MATLAS-167, which is in the process of disruption by the tidal force of the neighboring giant S0 galaxy, NGC 936, in a group environment. Using the imaging data of the MATLAS survey, we analyze the stellar tidal tail of MATLAS-167 and its central compact nucleus, designated as NGC 936_UCD. We find that NGC 936_UCD has a luminosity of M$_{g}$ = $-$11.43$\pm$0.01 mag and a size of 66.5$\pm$17 pc, sharing the global properties of Ultra Compact Dwarf galaxies (UCDs) but significantly larger and brighter compared to the typical UCD populations observed in the Virgo cluster. By integrating the total luminosity of both the tidal stream and MATLAS-167, we estimate that the disrupted dwarf progenitor possesses a luminosity of M$_{g}$ = $-$15.92$\pm$0.06 mag, a typical bright dE luminosity. With the help of the optical spectrum observed by the SDSS survey, we derive the simple stellar population properties of NGC 936_UCD: a light-weighted age of 5.6$\pm$0.7 Gyr and metallicity of [Z/H] = $-$0.83$\pm$0.3 dex. Our findings suggest that tidal threshing is a possible formation mechanism of bright UCD populations in close proximity to giant galaxies.

Massive star cluster formation and evolution in tidal dwarf galaxies

Abstract:The formation of globular clusters remains an open debate. Dwarf starburst galaxies are efficient at forming young massive clusters with similar masses as globular clusters and may hold the key to understanding their formation. We study star cluster formation in a tidal debris - including the vicinity of three tidal dwarf galaxies - in a massive gas dominated collisional ring around NGC~5291. These dwarfs have physical parameters which differ significantly from local starbursting dwarfs. They are gas-rich, highly turbulent, have a gas metallicity already enriched up to half-solar, and are expected to be free of dark matter. The aim is to study massive star cluster formation in this as yet unexplored type of environment. We use imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope using broadband filters covering the wavelength range from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared. We determine the masses and ages of the cluster candidates by using the spectral energy distribution-fitting code CIGALE, carefully considering age-extinction degeneracy effects on the estimation of the physical parameters. We find that the tidal dwarf galaxies in the ring of NGC 5291 are forming star clusters with an average efficiency of $\sim40\%$, comparable to blue compact dwarf galaxies. We also find massive star clusters for which the photometry suggests that they were formed at the very birth of the tidal dwarf galaxies and have survived for several hundred million years. Therefore our study shows that extended tidal dwarf galaxies and compact clusters may be formed simultaneously. In the specific case observed here, the young star clusters are not massive enough to survive for a Hubble time. However one may speculate that similar objects at higher redshift, with higher star formation rate, might form some of the long lived globular clusters.

DECam photometry reveals extra-tidal stars around the Milky Way globular cluster NGC 6864 (M75)

Abstract:Globular clusters are prone to lose stars while moving around the Milky Way. These stars escape the clusters and are distributed throughout extended envelopes or tidal tails. However, such extra-tidal structures are not observed in all globular clusters, and yet there is no structural or dynamical parameters that can predict their presence or absence. NGC\,6864 is an outer halo globular cluster with reported no observed tidal tails. We used Dark Energy Camera (DECam) photometry reaching $\sim$ 4 mag underneath its main sequence turnoff to confidently detect an extra-tidal envelope, and stellar debris spread across the cluster outskirts. These features emerged once robust field star filtering techniques were applied to the fainter end of the observed cluster main sequence. NGC\,6864 is associated to the {\it Gaia}-Enceladus dwarf galaxy, among others 28 globular clusters. Up-to-date, nearly 64$\%$ of them have been targeted looking for tidal tails and most of them have been confirmed to exhibit tidal tails. Thus, the present outcomes allow us to speculate on the possibility that {\it Gaia}-Enceladus globular clusters share a common pattern of mass loss by tidal disruption.

Tidal Tails of Minor Mergers II: Comparing Star Formation in the Tidal Tails of NGC 2782

Abstract:The peculiar spiral NGC 2782 is the result of a minor merger with a mass ratio ~4:1 occurring ~200 Myr ago. This merger produced a molecular and HI rich, optically bright Eastern tail and an HI-rich, optically faint Western tail. Non-detection of CO in the Western Tail by Braine et al. (2001) suggested that star formation had not yet begun. However, deep UBVR and H-alpha narrowband images show evidence of recent star formation in the Western tail, though it lacks massive star clusters and cluster complexes. Using Herschel PACS spectroscopy, we discover 158 micron [CII] emission at the location of the three most luminous H-alpha sources in the Eastern tail, but not at the location of the even brighter H-alpha source in the Western tail. The Western tail is found to have a normal star formation efficiency (SFE), but the Eastern tail has a low SFE. The lack of CO and [CII] emission suggests the Western tail HII region may have a low carbon abundance and be undergoing its first star formation. The Western tail is more efficient at forming stars, but lacks massive clusters. We propose that the low SFE in the Eastern tail may be due to its formation as a splash region where gas heating is important even though it has sufficient molecular and neutral gas to make massive star clusters. The Western tail, which has lower gas surface density and does not form high mass star clusters, is a tidally formed region where gravitational compression likely enhances star formation.

The curious case of the companion: evidence for cold accretion onto a dwarf satellite near the isolated elliptical NGC 7796

Abstract:The isolated elliptical (IE) NGC 7796 is accompanied by an interesting early-type dwarf galaxy, named NGC7796-DW1. It exhibits a tidal tail, very boxy isophotes, and multiple nuclei or regions (A, B, and C) that are bluer than the bulk population of the galaxy, indicating a younger age. These properties are suggestive of a dwarf-dwarf merger remnant. We use the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the VLT to investigate NGC 7796-DW1. We extract characteristic spectra to which we apply the STARLIGHT population synthesis software to obtain ages and metallicities of the various population components of the galaxy. The galaxy's main body is old and metal-poor. A surprising result is the extended line emission in the galaxy, forming a ring-like structure with a projected diameter of 2.2 kpc. The line ratios fall into the regime of HII-regions, although OB-stellar populations cannot be identified by spectral signatures. Nucleus A is a relatively old (7 Gyr or older) and metal-poor super star cluster, most probably the nucleus of the dwarf, now displaced. The star-forming regions B and C show younger and distinctly more metal-rich components. The emission line ratios of regions B and C indicate an almost solar oxygen abundance, if compared with radiation models of HII regions. NGC7796-DW1 occupies a particular role in the group of transition-type galaxies with respect to its origin and current evolutionary state, being the companion of an IE. The dwarf-dwarf merger scenario is excluded because of the missing metal-rich merger component. A viable alternative is gas accretion from a reservoir of cold, metal-rich gas. NGC7796 has to provide this gas within its X-ray bright halo. Surviving Tidal Tails Around the Milky Way Bulge Globular Cluster NGC 6355

Abstract:We present results of the analysis of a set of images obtained in the field of the Milky Way bulge globular cluster NGC 6355 using the Dark Energy Camera, which is attached to the 4 m Blanco telescope of the Cerro-Tololo Interamerican Observatory. We dealt with a heavy differential absorption across the observed field, a crowded field star population, and the superposition of field stars on to the cluster color–magnitude diagram main features to produce an intrinsic cluster stars density map. The resulting stellar density map reveals the presence of an extended envelope, a tidal tail, and scattered debris; the tidal tails pointing toward the Milky Way center. Such extra-tidal overdensities, detected above the mean star field density, resulted to be between four and six times larger that the local star field density fluctuation. They have also been recently generated by two independent studies which performed numerical simulations of synthetic tidal tails of Milky Way globular clusters. These results contrast with previous theoretical speculations about the possibility to detect tidal tails of globular clusters with chaotic orbits because they would be washed out after they were generated.

Abstract:We investigate the temperature dependence of the instanton content of gluon fields and their contribution to quark correlation using quenched lattice QCD and the cooling method. We found a suppression of the topological susceptibility at finite temperature, agreeing with the PCAC expectation at low temperature and enhanced suppression for temperatures at and above the deconfinement transition. For temperatures up to about 334 MeV, the topological charge correlation agrees well with a single instanton profile, though the size parameter seems to change across the phase transition. The screening wave functions for the pion and the rho become slightly more compact at higher temperatures. Lattice cooling shows no contribution from the instantons to the screening wave functions at temperatures above the phase transition.

Abstract:Numerical simulations of minor mergers predict little enhancement in the global star formation activity. However, it is still unclear the impact they have on the chemical state of the whole galaxy and on the mass build-up in the galaxy bulge and disc. We present a two-dimensional analysis of NCG 3310, currently undergoing an intense starburst likely caused by a recent minor interaction, using data from the PPAK Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) Nearby Galaxies Survey (PINGS). With data from a large sample of about a hundred HII regions identified throughout the disc and spiral arms we derive, using strong-line metallicity indicators and direct derivations, a rather flat gaseous abundance gradient. Thus, metal mixing processes occurred, as in observed galaxy interactions. Spectra from PINGS data and additional multiwavelength imaging were used to perform a spectral energy distribution fitting to the stellar emission and a photoionization modelling of the nebulae. The ionizing stellar population is characterized by single populations with a narrow age range (2.5-5 Myr) and a broad range of masses ($10^4-6\times10^6 M_\odot$). The effect of dust grains in the nebulae is important, indicating that 25-70% of the ultraviolet photons can be absorbed by dust. The ionizing stellar population within the HII regions represents typically a few percent of the total stellar mass. This ratio, a proxy to the specific star formation rate, presents a flat or negative radial gradient. Therefore, minor interactions may indeed play an important role in the mass build-up of the bulge.

The Multiple Extended Tidal Tails of NGC 288

Abstract:Using photometry and proper motions from Pan-STARRS, DECaLS, and Gaia DR3, we detect a ~35 to 70 degree-long trailing stellar debris stream associated with the globular cluster NGC 288. We also detect a broad, ~40 to 80 degree-long leading tail that appears to be composed of at least two narrower, spatially offset, and kinematically distinct streams. Stream modeling predicts a very similar broad composite of streams and suggests that these narrower components are each made up of one or more generations of tidal tails, each formed during different orbits over the past few gigayears. The trajectory of the trailing tail is not well matched by a model stream evolved in a static Galactic potential, but is reasonably well matched by a stream modeled in a potential that incorporates a massive, infalling Large Magellanic Cloud. Tables of the most highly ranked stream star candidates are provided for ongoing and future spectroscopic surveys.

Abstract:We have discovered recent star formation in the outermost portion (1-4x R_25) of the nearby lenticular (S0) galaxy NGC 404 using GALEX UV imaging. FUV-bright sources are strongly concentrated within the galaxy's HI ring (formed by a merger event according to del Rio et al.), even though the average gas density is dynamically subcritical. Archival HST imaging reveals resolved upper main sequence stars and conclusively demonstrates that the UV light originates from recent star formation activity. We present FUV, NUV radial surface brightness profiles and integrated magnitudes for NGC 404. Within the ring, the average star formation rate surface density (Sigma_{SFR}) is 2.2x10^-5 Msun/yr/kpc^2. Of the total FUV flux, 70% comes from the HI ring which is forming stars at a rate of 2.5x10^-3 Msun/yr. The gas consumption timescale, assuming a constant SFR and no gas recycling, is several times the age of the Universe. In the context of the UV-optical galaxy CMD, the presence of the SF HI ring places NGC 404 in the green valley separating the red and blue sequences. The rejuvenated lenticular galaxy has experienced a merger-induced, disk-building excursion away from the red sequence toward bluer colors, where it may evolve quiescently or (if appropriately triggered) experience a burst capable of placing it on the blue/star-forming sequence for up to ~1 Gyr. The green valley galaxy population is heterogeneous, with most systems transitioning from blue to red but others evolving in the opposite sense due to acquisition of fresh gas through various channels.
