Abstract:We consider Chess played on an $m \times n$ board (with $m$ and $n$ arbitrary positive integers), with only the two kings and the white rook remaining, but placed at arbitrary positions. Using the symbolic finite state method, developed by Thanatipanonda and Zeilberger, we prove that on a $3 \times n$ board, for almost all initial positions, White can checkmate Black in $\leq n+2$ moves, and that this upper bound is sharp. We also conjecture that for an arbitrary $m \times n$ board, with $m,n \geq 4$ (except for $(m,n)=(4,4)$ when it equals $7$), the number of needed moves is $\leq m+n$, and that this bound is also sharp.

Abstract:In numerous positional games the identity of the winner is easily determined. In this case one of the more interesting questions is not {\em who} wins but rather {\em how fast} can one win. These type of problems were studied earlier for Maker-Breaker games; here we initiate their study for unbiased Avoider-Enforcer games played on the edge set of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices. For several games that are known to be an Enforcer's win, we estimate quite precisely the minimum number of moves Enforcer has to play in order to win. We consider the non-planarity game, the connectivity game and the non-bipartite game.

Abstract:The main challenge of combinatorial game theory is to handle combinatorial chaos, if one player knows the strategy better than his opponent, he is able to determine the exact results of a game. If both players are qualified competitor, the result usually depends on the order when they take turns, which however, may not be determined by a player casually. So, this research studied different kinds of tic-tac-toe, assuming that a player always moves first, tried to figure out the winning or unbeatable strategy for the first player in different kinds of tic-tac-toe. It is titled "Move first, and become unbeatable", which also reflects the philosophy in life.

Abstract:In 1983 the chess periodical EG published a summary of a letter from Julius Telesin outlining how a king, a bishop and a knight can checkmate a lonely king on an arbitrarily large chessboard. The Telesin checkmating procedure doesn't seem to be widely known, and the published account left out a number of details. We describe the method precisely and show that it works against every defense. We also discuss the open question of the asymptotics of the largest distance to mate on a large square board.

A Practical Method for Preventing Forced Wins in Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

Abstract:Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe is a variant of the popular Tic-Tac-Toe game. Two players compete to win three aligned "fields," with each field constituting its own miniature tic-tac-toe game. Each move determines which field the next player must play in. Prior studies have shown that there exists a forced winning strategy for the first player, whereby they can win in at least 29 moves and at most 43 moves. This paper proposes a practical solution to the forced-win problem discovered by Bertholon et al., by putting forth a simple method for randomizing the first set of moves that are played. This method uses 5 randomly generated digits between 0 and 8 to arbitrarily place the first 4 moves of the game, and helps players avoid forced wins without having to change other rules of the game. This paper also investigates the probability that a random placement of the first 4 moves will lead to an easily calculable forced win, and shows that this probability is precisely 56/59049, or 0.0948%.

Abstract:We study (a:a) Maker–Breaker games played on the edge set of the complete graph on n vertices. In the following four games — perfect matching game, Hamilton cycle game, star factor game and path factor game, our goal is to determine the least number of moves which Maker needs in order to win these games. Moreover, for all games except for the star factor game, we show how first player can win in the strong version of these games.

Abstract:In this article we experiment with a 2-player strategy board game where playing models are developed using reinforcement learning and neural networks. The models are developed to speed up automatic game development based on human involvement at varying levels of sophistication and density when compared to fully autonomous playing. The experimental results suggest a clear and measurable association between the ability to win games and the ability to do that fast, while at the same time demonstrating that there is a minimum level of human involvement beyond which no learning really occurs.

History and Overview

Abstract:A common format for sports contests involves pairwise matches between two teams, with the #1 player of team A matched against the #1 player of team B, the #2 player of team A against the #2 player of team B, and so on. This paper addresses the following question: What if team A wants to game the system? Can it gain an advantage by putting its players in a different order? The first example of this problem in history (to the author's knowledge) was a match of three horse races between the King of Qi and general Tian Ji, in China, in the fourth century B.C. Tian Ji's protege, Sun Bin, advised the general to throw the first race, running his #3 horse against the king's #1, and then to race his #1 horse against the king's #2 and his #2 horse against the king's #3. In this way, Tian Ji won the match, 2-1, and Sun Bin ensured his reputation as a great strategist. The paper introduces a card-game version of this puzzle, called One Round War, and derives the optimal strategy in case each side has N cards (the analogue of N horses). The problem is recast as a linear assignment problem. The optimal solution involves sacrificing the weakest k cards/horses (for some k = k(N)) against the opponent's strongest k in reverse order (weakest vs. strongest), and then playing the remaining N-k cards/horses against the opponent's remaining cards in forward order. An exact formula is derived for k(N), and asymptotically we show that k(N) ~ sqrt (N ln N/2). Note: This paper proves that the strategy described above is optimal for sufficiently large N (e.g., for N greater than 10^7). It has also been verified by computer to be optimal for N less than 60. We conjecture that it is also true for N between 60 and 10^7. The upper bound 10^7 can be greatly improved, but closing the gap completely will probably require computer calculations that are beyond our resources.

Abstract:We calculated a fixed strategy that minimizes the average number of guesses (minimum strategy) for the number-guessing game MOO by exhaustive search. Although the minimum strategy for a similar game, mastermind, has been reported, this study seems to be the first to find the minimum strategy for MOO with a larger search space. When two players play against each other in MOO, the minimum strategy is not always the strongest fixed strategy. First, we compute a fixed strategy that has the maximum winning rate when played against the minimum strategy. Then we confirm that there is no fixed strategy with a winning rate exceeding 0.5 against this strategy. This result shows that MOO is a game with the strongest fixed strategy.

Abstract:Abstract In 1979, David Fabian found a complete game of two-person Chinese Checkers in 30 moves (15 by each player). This solution requires that the two players cooperate to generate a win as quickly as possible for one of them. We show, using computational search techniques, that no shorter game is possible. We also consider a solitaire version of Chinese Checkers where one player attempts to move her pieces across the board in as few moves as possible. In 1971, Octave Levenspiel found a solution in 27 moves; we demonstrate that no shorter solution exists. To show optimality, we employ a variant of A* search, as well as bidirectional search.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of "Solo Chess", a single-player variant of the game that can be played on <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://chess.com" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. The standard version of the game is played on a regular 8 x 8 chessboard by a single player, with only white pieces, using the following rules: every move must capture a piece, no piece may capture more than 2 times, and if there is a King on the board, it must be the final piece. The goal is to clear the board, i.e, make a sequence of captures after which only one piece is left. We generalize this game to unbounded boards with $n$ pieces, each of which have a given number of captures that they are permitted to make. We show that Generalized Solo Chess is NP-complete, even when it is played by only rooks that have at most two captures remaining. It also turns out to be NP-complete even when every piece is a queen with exactly two captures remaining in the initial configuration. In contrast, we show that solvable instances of Generalized Solo Chess can be completely characterized when the game is: a) played by rooks on a one-dimensional board, and b) played by pawns with two captures left on a 2D board. Inspired by Generalized Solo Chess, we also introduce the Graph Capture Game, which involves clearing a graph of tokens via captures along edges. This game subsumes Generalized Solo Chess played by knights. We show that the Graph Capture Game is NP-complete for undirected graphs and DAGs.

Abstract:Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe is a variant of the well known tic-tac-toe (noughts and crosses) board game. Two players compete to win three aligned "fields", each of them being a tic-tac-toe game. Each move determines which field the next player must play in. We show that there exist a winning strategy for the first player, and therefore that there exist an optimal winning strategy taking at most 43 moves; that the second player can hold on at least 29 rounds; and identify any optimal strategy's first two moves.

Abstract:A 5x5 board is the smallest board on which one can set up all kind of chess pieces as a start position. We consider Gardner's minichess variant in which all pieces are set as in a standard chessboard (from Rook to King). This game has roughly 9x10^{18} legal positions and is comparable in this respect with checkers. We weakly solve this game, that is we prove its game-theoretic value and give a strategy to draw against best play for White and Black sides. Our approach requires surprisingly small computing power. We give a human readable proof. The way the result is obtained is generic and could be generalized to bigger chess settings or to other games.

Abstract:We propose a class of chess variants, Multimove Chess (i,j), in which White gets i moves per turn and Black gets j moves per turn. One side is said to win when it takes the opponent's king. All other rules of chess apply. We prove that if (i,j) is not (1,1) or (2,2), and if $i \geq \min(j,4)$, then White always has a winning strategy, and otherwise Black always has a winning strategy.

Abstract:The article presents research on the use of Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) methods to create an artificial player for the popular card game "The Lord of the Rings". The game is characterized by complicated rules, multi-stage round construction, and a high level of randomness. The described study found that the best probability of a win is received for a strategy combining expert knowledge-based agents with MCTS agents at different decision stages. It is also beneficial to replace random playouts with playouts using expert knowledge. The results of the final experiments indicate that the relative effectiveness of the developed solution grows as the difficulty of the game increases.

Abstract:The peaceable queens problem asks to determine the maximum number $a(n)$ such that there is a placement of $a(n)$ white queens and $a(n)$ black queens on an $n \times n$ chessboard so that no queen can capture any queen of the opposite color. In this paper, we consider the peaceable queens problem and its variant on the toroidal board. For the regular board, we show that $a(n) \leq 0.1716n^2$, for all sufficiently large $n$. This improves on the bound $a(n) \leq 0.25n^2$ of van Bommel and MacEachern. For the toroidal board, we provide new upper and lower bounds. Somewhat surprisingly, our bounds show that there is a sharp contrast in behaviour between the odd torus and the even torus. Our lower bounds are given by explicit constructions. For the upper bounds, we formulate the problem as a non-linear optimization problem with at most $100$ variables, regardless of the size of the board. We solve our non-linear program exactly using modern optimization software. We also provide a local search algorithm and a software implementation which converges very rapidly to solutions which appear optimal. Our algorithm is sufficiently robust that it works on both the regular and toroidal boards. For example, for the regular board, the algorithm quickly finds the so-called Ainley construction. Thus, our work provides some further evidence that the Ainley construction is indeed optimal.
