Abstract:We study a natural construction of Hopf algebra quotients canonically associated to an R-matrix in a finite dimensional Hopf algebra. We apply this construction to show that a quasitriangular Hopf algebra whose dimension is odd and square-free is necessarily cocommutative.

Abstract:Planetary nebulae (PNe) have three main components: a central star (CS), ionised gas and dust in the nebula. Each of them contains critical chemical fingerprints of their evolution, serving as tracers of the evolution, nucleosynthesis and dust production that occurred during the preceding asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase. We aim to build a bridge to link the PN phase to the evolution of their progenitors, trying to better understand the dust production and mass-loss mechanism during the final AGB phase. Here, we present a comprehensive study of nine Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) spherical or elliptical PNe whose observations from the ultraviolet (UV) through the infrared (IR) are available in the literature. We characterize nebulae and CSs, finding information as the amount of gas that makes up the nebula and the dust that surrounds the CS, necessary to reconstruct the evolutionary history of mass-loss and dust production. We compare the observed energy distribution of the selected PNe to that obtained from photoionization modeling, taking into account the presence of dust. The physical and chemical parameters of the central stars are then compared with the predictions from the evolutionary tracks. We characterized the source, assigning to each CS a progenitor, early-AGB mass. We estimated the mass of the nebula and the dust-to-gas ratio. For 5 objects, we find evidence for the presence of a near-IR bump, which would be connected to the presence of hot dust.

Hubble Space Telescope Images of Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebulae: Data and Correlations across Morphological Classes

Abstract:The morphology of planetary nebulae (PNe) provides an essential tool for understanding their origin and evolution, as it reflects both the dynamics of the gas ejected during the TP-AGB phase, and the central star energetics. Here we study the morphology of 27 Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae (MCPNe) and present an analysis of their physical characteristics across morphological classes. Similar studies have been successfully carried out for galactic PNe, but were compromised by the uncertainty of individual PN distances. We present our own HST/FOC images of 15 Magellanic Cloud PNe (MCPNe) acquired through a narrow-band lambda 5007 [O III] filter. We use the Richardson-Lucy deconvolution technique on these pre-COSTAR images to achieve post-COSTAR quality. Three PNe imaged before and after COSTAR confirm the high reliability of our deconvolution procedure. We derive morphological classes, dimensions, and surface photometry for all these PNe. We have combined this sample with HST/PC1 images of 15 MCPNe, three of which are in common with the FOC set, acquired by Dopita et al. (1996), to obtain the largest MCPN sample ever examined from the morphological viewpoint. By using the whole database, supplemented with published data from the literature, we have analyzed the properties of the MCPNe and compared them to a typical, complete galactic sample. Morphology of the MCPNe is then correlated with PN density, chemistry, and evolution.

Spitzer IRAC observations of newly-discovered planetary nebulae from the Macquarie-AAO-Strasbourg H-alpha Planetary Nebula Project

Abstract:We compare H-alpha, radio continuum, and Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) images of 58 planetary nebulae (PNe) recently discovered by the Macquarie-AAO-Strasbo- urg H-alpha PN Project (MASH) of the SuperCOSMOS H-alpha Survey. Using InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) data we define the IR colors of PNe and demonstrate good isolation between these colors and those of many other types of astronomical object. The only substantive contamination of PNe in the color-color plane we illustrate is due to YSOs. However, this ambiguity is readily resolved by the unique optical characteristics of PNe and their environs. We also examine the relationships between optical and MIR morphologies from 3.6 to 8.0um and explore the ratio of mid-infrared (MIR) to radio nebular fluxes, which is a valuable discriminant between thermal and nonthermal emission. MASH emphasizes late evolutionary stages of PNe compared with previous catalogs, enabling study of the changes in MIR and radio flux that attend the aging process. Spatially integrated MIR energy distributions were constructed for all MASH PNe observed by the GLIMPSE Legacy Project, using the H-alpha morphologies to establish the dimensions for the calculations of the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX), IRAC, and radio continuum (from the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope and the Very Large Array) flux densities. The ratio of IRAC 8.0-um to MSX 8.3-um flux densities provides a measure of the absolute diffuse calibration of IRAC at 8.0 um. We independently confirm the aperture correction factor to be applied to IRAC at 8.0um to align it with the diffuse calibration of MSX. The result agrees with the recommendations of the Spitzer Science Center and with results from a parallel study of HII regions. These PNe probe the diffuse calibration of IRAC on a spatial scale of 9-77 arcsec.

Abstract:The goal of the present study is twofold. First, we employ new HST/STIS spectra and photoionization modeling techniques to determine the progenitor masses of eight planetary nebulae (IC 2165, IC 3568, NGC 2440, NGC 3242, NGC 5315, NGC 5882, NGC 7662 and PB6). Second, for the first time we are able to compare each object's observed nebular abundances of helium, carbon and nitrogen with abundance predictions of these same elements by a stellar model that is consistent with each object's progenitor mass. Important results include the following: 1) the mass range of our objects' central stars matches well with the mass distribution of other PN central stars and white dwarfs; 2) He/H is above solar in all of our objects, in most cases likely due to the predicted effects of first dredge up; 3) most of our objects show negligible C enrichment, probably because their low masses preclude 3rd dredge-up; 4) C/O versus O/H for our objects appears to be inversely correlated, perhaps consistent with the conclusion of theorists that the extent of atmospheric carbon enrichment from first dredge-up is sensitive to a parameter whose value increases as metallicity declines; 5) stellar model predictions of nebular C and N enrichment are consistent with observed abundances for progenitor star masses <=1.5 Msun. Finally, we present the first published photoionization models of NGC 5315 and NGC 5882.

Identification of Spitzer-IRS staring mode targets in the Magellanic Clouds

Abstract:The SAGE-LMC, SAGE-SMC and HERITAGE surveys have mapped the Magellanic Clouds in the infrared using the Spitzer and Herschel Space Telescopes. Over 8.5 million point sources were detected and catalogued in the LMC alone. Staring mode observations using the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) on board Spitzer have been obtained for 1,000 positions in the LMC and ~250 in the SMC. From the infrared spectroscopy we have identified the nature of the sources for which spectroscopy is available. These IRS staring mode targets represent an important contribution to the SED of these dwarf galaxies. Here we report on our latest results.

The Magellanic zoo: Mid-infrared Spitzer spectroscopy of evolved stars and circumstellar dust in the Magellanic Clouds

Abstract:We observed a sample of evolved stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Comparing samples from the SMC, LMC, and the Galaxy reveals that the dust-production rate depends on metallicity for oxygen-rich stars, but carbon stars with similar pulsation properties produce similar quantities of dust, regardless of their initial metallicity. Other properties of the oxygen-rich stars also depend on metallicity. As the metallicity decreases, the fraction of naked (i.e. dust-free) stars increases, and among the naked stars, the strength of the 8 um absorption band from SiO decreases. Our sample includes several massive stars in the LMC with long pulsation periods which produce significant amounts of dust, probably because they are young and relatively metal rich. Little alumina dust is seen in circumstellar shells in the SMC and LMC, unlike in Galactic samples. Three oxygen-rich sources also show emission from magnesium-rich crystalline silicates. Many also show an emission feature at 14 um. The one S star in our sample shows a newly detected emission feature centered at 13.5 um. At lower metallicity, carbon stars with similar amounts of amorphous carbon in their shells have stronger absorption from molecular acetylene (C_2H_2) and weaker emission from SiC and MgS dust, as discovered in previous studies.

A mid-infrared study of HII regions in the Magellanic Clouds: N88A and N160A

Abstract:To show the importance of high-spatial resolution observations of HII regions when compared with observations obtained with larger apertures such as ISO, we present mid-infrared spectra of two Magellanic Cloud HII regions, N88A and N160A. We obtained mid-infrared (8-13 um), long-slit spectra with TIMMI2 on the ESO 3.6m telescope. These are combined with archival spectra obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, and are compared with the low-spatial resolution ISO-SWS data. An inventory of the spectra in terms of atomic fine-structure lines and molecular bands is presented. Concerning N88A, an isolated HII region with no adjacent infrared sources, the observations indicate that the line fluxes observed by ISO-SWS and Spitzer-IRS come exclusively from the compact HII region of about 3 arcsec in diameter. This is not the case for N160A, which has a more complex morphology. We have spectroscopically isolated for the first time the individual contributions of the three components of N160A, two high-excitation blobs, A1 and A2, and the young stellar object N160A-IR. In addition, extended [SIV] emission is observed with TIMMI2 and is most likely associated with the central star cluster located between A1 and A2. We show the value of these high-spatial resolution data in determining source characteristics, such as the degree of ionization of each high-excitation blob or the bolometric luminosity of the YSO. This luminosity is about one order of magnitude lower than previously estimated. For each high-excitation blob, we also determine the electron density and the elemental abundances of Ne, S, and Ar.

Spectroscopic Study of the HST/ACS PEARS Emission-Line Galaxies

Abstract:We present spectroscopy of 76 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) in CDF-S taken with the LDSS3 spectrograph on Magellan Telescope. These galaxies are selected to have emission lines with ACS grism data in the Hubble Space Telescope Probing Evolution and Reionization Spectroscopically (PEARS) grism Survey. The ACS grism spectra cover the wavelength range 6000-9700 Å and most PEARS grism redshifts are based on a single emission line + photometric redshifts from broad-band colors; the Magellan spectra cover a wavelength range from 4000 Å to 9000 Å, and provide a check on redshifts derived from PEARS data. We find an accuracy of $\sigma_z$ = 0.006 for the ACS grism redshifts with only one catastrophic outlier. We probe for AGN in our sample via several different methods. In total we find 7 AGNs and AGN candidates out of 76 galaxies. Two AGNs are identified from the X-ray full-band luminosity, $L_{X-ray,FB}>10^{43}$ erg$\;$s$^{-1}$, the line widths and the power-law continuum spectra. Two unobscured faint AGN candidates are identified from the X-ray full-band luminosity $L_{X-ray,FB}\sim10^{41}$ erg$\;$s$^{-1}$, the hardness ratio and the column density, and the emission-line and X-ray derived SFRs. Two candidates are classified based on the line ratio of [NII]\lambda6584/H$\alpha$ versus [OIII]$\lambda$5007/H$\beta$ (BPT diagram), which are between the empirical and theoretical demarcation curves, i.e, the transition region from star-forming galaxies to AGNs. One AGN candidate is identified from the high-ionization emission line HeIIÅ4686.

Dissecting the planetary nebula NGC 4361 with MUSE

Abstract:Optical integral field spectroscopy of planetary nebulae (PNe) offers a unique tool to explore the spatial relationships between the complex mixture of the many components (neutral, low- and high-ionisation gas, dust, and the central star) and their underlying physical conditions. The optical line and continuum emission in the very-high-ionisation Galactic PN, NGC 4361, were mapped to study the distribution of ionisation, extinction, electron temperature, and density. Based on commissioning data, MUSE Wide Field (60times 60$''$) normal-mode (4750-9300\ observations of NGC 4361 were reduced. The PN is larger than a single MUSE field and only the central 1 arcmin2 of the PN was observed in good conditions. Emission images in recombination and collisionally excited lines were extracted and the line ratios provided the dust extinction, electron density and temperature, and ionic abundances using standard techniques. A family of compact low-ionisation knots (dubbed 'freckles') was discovered and techniques developed to measure their spectra, independently of the extended high-ionisation medium. The nebula is confirmed as optically thin in the H-ionising continuum, based on its very low He i emission, even to the edges of the field. The electron temperature, $T_ e $, is shown to have a large-scale spatially coherent structure, as indicated by a previous long-slit spectrum. Prior to this study, no low-ionisation emission had been positively detected, although MUSE revealed both weak extended N ii and O ii and $>$100 spatially unresolved knots. There are several linear associations of these knots, but none of them point convincingly back to the central star. They have low-to-moderate ionisation with $T_ e $ sim 11000\,K e $ sim 1500 cm$^ $ and generally exhibit a higher extinction than the extended high-ionisation nebula. Within the MUSE field, a low-redshift emission-line galaxy was serendipitously found to be hiding behind NGC 4361. The spectrum of this dwarf galaxy was carefully extracted from the bright foreground nebular emission and the galaxy's line and continuum properties were then determined. NGC 4361 is not completely optically thin, as indicated by several extended regions and many compact features of lower ionisation emission. The low-ionisation 'freckles' identified here do not clearly appear to differ in (He, N, O, S) abundance with respect to the extended high-ionisation gas. The spatial distribution and radial velocities of these features suggest that they belong to a thick disk oriented perpendicular to the large-scale nebular gas, which may perhaps be remnants of an earlier structure. The low-luminosity disk galaxy at sim 87\,Mpc has bright H ii regions with metallicity 12+log(O/H) cong 8.4 and is suggested to be a Magellanic irregular or low-mass spiral.

Abstract:The abundance discrepancy problem in planetary nebulae (PNe) has long puzzled astronomers. NGC\,6153, with its high abundance discrepancy factor (ADF sim 10), provides a unique opportunity to study the chemical structure and ionisation processes within these objects. We aim to understand the chemical structure and ionisation processes in this high-ADF nebula by constructing detailed emission line maps and examining variations in electron temperature and density. This study also explores the discrepancies between ionic abundances derived from collisional and recombination lines, shedding light on the presence of multiple plasma components. We used the MUSE spectrograph to acquire IFU data covering the wavelength range 4600$-$9300 with a spatial sampling of 0.2 arcsec and spectral resolutions ranging from R = 1609 to R = 3506. We created emission line maps for 60 lines and two continuum regions. We developed a tailored methodology for the analysis of the data, including correction for recombination contributions to auroral lines and the contributions of different plasma phases. Our analysis confirmed the presence of a low-temperature plasma component in NGC\,6153. We find that electron temperatures derived from recombination line and continuum diagnostics are significantly lower than those derived from collisionally excited line diagnostics. Ionic chemical abundance maps were constructed, considering the weight of the cold plasma phase in the emission. Adopting this approach we found ionic abundances that could be up to 0.2 dex lower for those derived from CELs and up to 1.1 dex higher for those derived from RLs than in the case of a homogeneous emission. The abundance contrast factor (ACF) between both plasma components was defined, with values, on average, 0.9 dex higher than the ADF. Different methods for calculating ionisation correction factors (ICFs), including state-of-the-art literature ICFs and machine learning techniques, yielded consistent results. Our findings emphasise that accurate chemical abundance determinations in high-ADF PNe must account for multiple plasma phases. Future research should focus on expanding this methodology to a broader sample of PNe, with spectra deep enough to gather physical condition information of both plasma components, which will enhance our understanding of their chemical compositions and the underlying physical processes in these complex objects.

Mechanistic home range models and resource selection analysis: a reconciliation and unification

Abstract:In the three decades since its introduction, resource selection analysis (RSA) has become a widespread method for analyzing spatial patterns of animal relocations obtained from telemetry studies. Recently, mechanistic home range models have been proposed as an alternative framework for studying patterns of animal space use. In contrast to RSA models, mechanistic home range models are derived from underlying mechanistic descriptions of individual movement behavior and yield spatially-explicit predictions for patterns of animal space-use. In addition, their mechanistic underpinning means that, unlike RSA, mechanistic home range models can also be used to predict changes in space-use following perturbation. In this paper, we develop a formal reconciliation between these two methods of home range analysis, showing how differences in the habitat preferences of individuals give rise to spatially-explicit patterns of space-use. The resulting unified framework combines the simplicity of resource selection analysis with the spatially-explicit and predictive capabilities of mechanistic home range models.

3D Spectrophotometry of Planetary Nebulae in the Bulge of M31

Abstract:We introduce crowded field integral field (3D) spectrophotometry as a useful technique for the study of resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies. As a methodological test, we present a pilot study with selected extragalactic planetary nebulae (XPN) in the bulge of M31, demonstrating how 3D spectroscopy is able to improve the limited accuracy of background subtraction which one would normally obtain with classical slit spectroscopy. It is shown that due to the absence of slit effects, 3D is a most suitable technique for spectrophometry. We present spectra and line intensities for 5 XPN in M31, obtained with the MPFS instrument at the Russian 6m BTA, INTEGRAL at the WHT, and with PMAS at the Calar Alto 3.5m Telescope. Using 3D spectra of bright standard stars, we demonstrate that the PSF is sampled with high accuracy, providing a centroiding precision at the milli-arcsec level. Crowded field 3D spectrophotometry and the use of PSF fitting techniques is suggested as the method of choice for a number of similar observational problems, including luminous stars in nearby galaxies, supernovae, QSO host galaxies, gravitationally lensed QSOs, and others.

Abstract:We perform a deep survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the spiral galaxy NGC 300 to construct its planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). We aim to derive the distance using the PNLF and to probe the characteristics of the most luminous PNe. We analyse 44 fields observed with MUSE at the VLT, covering a total area of $\sim11$ kpc$^2$. We find [OIII]5007 sources using the differential emission line filter (DELF) technique. We identify PNe through spectral classification using the aid of the BPT-diagram. The PNLF distance is derived using the maximum likelihood estimation technique. For the more luminous PNe, we also measure their extinction using the Balmer decrement. We estimate the luminosity and effective temperature of the central stars of the luminous PNe, based on estimates of the excitation class and the assumption of optically thick nebulae. We identify 107 PNe and derive a most-likely distance modulus $(m-M)_0 = 26.48^{+0.11}_{-0.26}$ ($d = 1.98^{+0.10}_{-0.23}$ Mpc). We find that the PNe at the PNLF cut-off exhibit relatively low extinction, with some high extinction cases caused by local dust lanes. We present the lower limit luminosities and effective temperatures of the central stars for some of the brighter PNe. We also identify a few Type I PNe that come from a young population with progenitor masses $>2.5 \, M_\odot$, however do not populate the PNLF cut-off. The spatial resolution and spectral information of MUSE allow precise PN classification and photometry. These capabilities also enable us to resolve possible contamination by diffuse gas and dust, improving the accuracy of the PNLF distance to NGC 300.

Radio planetary nebulae in the Small Magellanic Cloud

Abstract:We present ten new radio continuum (RC) detections at catalogued planetary nebula (PN) positions in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC): SMP S6, LIN 41, LIN 142, SMP S13, SMP S14, SMP S16, J 18, SMP S18, SMP S19 and SMP S22. Additionally, six SMC radio PNe previously detected, LIN 45, SMP S11, SMP S17, LIN 321, LIN 339 and SMP S24 are also investigated (re-observed) here making up a population of 16 radio detections of catalogued PNe in the SMC. These 16 radio detections represent ∼15 % of the total catalogued PN population in the SMC. We show that six of these objects have characteristics that suggest that they are PN mimics: LIN 41, LIN 45, SMP S11, LIN 142, LIN 321 and LIN 339. We also present our results for the surface brightness—PN radius relation (Σ−D$$\Sigma-D$$) of the SMC radio PN population. These are consistent with previous SMC and LMC PN measurements of the (Σ−D$$\Sigma-D$$) relation.

Abstract:Recent infrared spectroscopic observations have shown that proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs) are sites of active synthesis of organic compounds in the late stages of stellar evolution. This paper presents a study of Spitzer/IRS spectra for a sample of carbon-rich PPNs, all except one of which show the unidentified 21 micron emission feature. The strengths of the aromatic infrared band (AIB), 21 micron, and 30 micron features are obtained by decomposition of the spectra. The observed variations in the strengths and peak wavelengths of the features support the model that the newly synthesized organic compounds gradually change from aliphatic to aromatic characteristics as stars evolve from PPNs to planetary nebulae.

Abstract:The origins of S0 galaxies remain obscure, with various mechanisms proposed for their formation, likely depending on environment. These mechanisms would imprint different signatures in the galaxies' stellar kinematics out to large radii, offering a method for distinguishing between them. We aim to study a sample of six S0 galaxies from a range of environments, and use planetary nebulae (PNe) as tracers of their stellar populations out to very large radii, to determine their kinematics in order to understand their origins. Using a special-purpose instrument, the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph, we observe and extract PNe catalogues for these six systems*. We show that the PNe have the same spatial distribution as the starlight, that the numbers of them are consistent with what would be expected in a comparable old stellar population in elliptical galaxies, and that their kinematics join smoothly onto those derived at smaller radii from conventional spectroscopy. The high-quality kinematic observations presented here form an excellent set for studying the detailed kinematics of S0 galaxies, in order to unravel their formation histories. We find that PNe are good tracers of stellar kinematics in these systems. We show that the recovered kinematics are largely dominated by rotational motion, although with significant random velocities in most cases.

Abstract:NGC 7009 is a fascinating example of a high‐excitation, elliptical planetary nebula (PN) containing circumnebular rings, and FLIERs and jets along the major axis. We present visual spectroscopy along multiple position angles through the nucleus, taken with the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional (Mexico); mid‐infrared (MIR) spectroscopy and imaging acquired using the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and Spitzer Space Telescope (SST), and narrow‐band imaging obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The data show that the mid‐infrared (MIR) continuum is dominated by a broad ≈100 K continuum, and a strong excess attributable to crystalline silicate emission. The primary peaks in this excess are similar to those observed in Forsterite and clino‐ and ortho‐enstatite. The MIR images, by contrast, appear to be dominated by ionic transitions, with the 8.991 μm transition of [Ar iii] being important in the 8.0‐μm band. The morphology and size of the envelope are found to vary with wavelength, with the largest dimensions occurring at 8.0 μm – a trend which is also reflected in an increase in the 8.0 μm/4.5 μm and 5.8 μm/4.5 μm ratios with distance from the nucleus. The visual spectroscopy permits us to map density and temperature throughout the shell, and confirm that the lowest values of ne are located close to the ansae, where densities appear to be of the order of 900–2600 cm−3. We provide mean line intensities for 116 transitions in six regions of the shell, and use mapping to confirm a systematic increase in excitation in the outer portions of the envelope. We finally use the ground‐based spectroscopy, and ratioing of HST images to investigate the presence of shocks in the ansae and interior envelope. It is concluded that line ratios in the ansae may be partially consistent with shock excitation, although these features are primarily dominated by photoionization. We also note evidence for shock excitation at the limits of the interior elliptical shell, and for multiple bow‐shock structures centred upon the ansae. The orientations of the easterly bow‐shocks may have varied over time, indicating precession of the collimating engine at a rate of deg yr−1, whilst the outward splaying of the westerly ‘jet’ appears consistent with shock refraction modelling. We finally note that HST observations of the halo rings show them to have widths of the order of ∼1–3 arcsec, and steep changes in surface brightness consistent with local shock activity.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of the Planetary Nebulae PM1-242, PM1-318 and PM1-322

Abstract:We have recently confirmed the planetary nebula (PN)nature of PM1-242, PM1-318 and PM1-322. Here we present high-resolution long-slit spectra of these three PNe in order to analyze their internal kinematics and to investigate their physical structure. PM1-242 is a tilted ring and not an elliptical PN as suggested by direct images. The object is probably related to ring-like PNe and shows an unusual point-symmetric brightness distribution in the ring. PM1-318 is a pole-on elliptical PN, instead of a circular one as suggested by direct images. PM1-322 is spatially unresolved and its spectrum shows large differences between the forbidden lines and H$\alpha$ profiles, with the latter showing a double-peaked profile and relatively extended wings (FWZI $\sim$ 325 km\,s$^{-1}$). These properties are found in other PNe that are suspected to host a symbiotic central star.

Abstract:Modern control systems applications are often built on top of a real time operating system (RTOS) which provides the necessary hardware abstraction as well as scheduling, networking and other services. Several open source RTOS solutions are publicly available, which is very attractive, both from an economic (no licensing fees) as well as from a technical (control over the source code) point of view. This contribution gives an overview of the RTLinux and RTEMS systems (architecture, development environment, API etc.). Both systems feature most popular CPUs, several APIs (including Posix), networking, portability and optional commercial support. Some performance figures are presented, focusing on interrupt latency and context switching delay.
