Abstract:A conjecture of Kalai and Eckhoff that the face vector of an arbitrary flag complex is also the face vector of some particular balanced complex is verified.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to verify a conjecture of Kalai and Eckhoff, that is, the face vector of any flag complex can also be the face vector of some specific balanced complex. Specifically, if the largest face of a flag complex contains \(r\) vertices, then its face vector should satisfy the known bounds regarding complexes with chromatic number \(r\), even though the actual chromatic number of this flag complex may be much larger than \(r\). ### Main problems 1. **The conjecture of Kalai and Eckhoff**: - The conjecture states that for any flag complex \(C\), there exists a balanced complex \(C'\) with chromatic number \(r\) such that \(C\) and \(C'\) have the same face vector. - Here \(r\) is the number of vertices contained in the largest face in the flag complex. 2. **Verifying the conjecture**: - The main objective of the paper is to prove the above conjecture and provide a construction method to generate a balanced complex with the same face vector. ### Solutions The paper solves this problem through the following steps: 1. **Introducing basic concepts and theorems**: - It introduces basic concepts such as simplicial complex, flag complex, and balanced complex. - It mentions the Kruskal - Katona theorem and the Frankl - Füredi - Kalai theorem, which are used to describe the properties of the face vectors of simplicial complexes. 2. **Constructing the proof framework**: - It uses induction to prove that for any non - negative integer \(k\), if a graph \(G\) satisfies \(c_{r + 1}(G)=0\), then there exists an \(r\)-colorable complex \(C\) such that \(c_{k}(C)=c_{k}(G)\) and \(c_{k + 1}(C)=c_{k + 1}(G)\). - Through step - by - step construction, starting from a smaller \(k\) and gradually increasing to a larger \(k\), it finally proves the entire conjecture. 3. **Final result**: - Theorem 4.2 shows that for any graph \(G\) satisfying \(c_{r+1}(G) = 0\), there exists an \(r\)-colorable complex \(C\) such that \(C\) and \(G\) have the same number of faces. ### Conclusion This paper successfully verifies the conjecture of Kalai and Eckhoff, proving that the face vector of any flag complex can be realized by a certain specific balanced complex. This result is of great significance in the fields of combinatorial mathematics and graph theory, especially in the study of the relationship between the number of faces and the chromatic number of complexes.
