Abstract:We introduce the concept of a quantum background and a functor QFT. In the case that the QFT moduli space is smooth formal, we construct a flat quantum superconnection on a bundle over QFT which defines algebraic structures relevant to correlation functions in quantum field theory. We go further and identify chain level generalizations of correlation functions which should be present in all quantum field theories.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve some core problems in quantum field theory (QFT), especially how to understand and control the influence of the deformation of the action functional in quantum field theory on correlation functions through the concept of quantum backgrounds. Specifically, the authors introduced the concept of quantum backgrounds and developed a framework for constructing flat quantum superconnections, which helps to define the algebraic structures related to quantum field theory.
### Core problems of the paper
1. **Understanding deformations in quantum field theory**:
- The authors attempted to understand how the deformations of the action functional in quantum field theory control the correlation functions of the theory.
- They introduced the concept of "quantum background" as an algebraic structure for discussing local deformations in quantum field theory.
2. **Constructing flat quantum superconnections**:
- When the moduli space of quantum field theory is smooth formal, the authors constructed a flat quantum superconnection, which is defined on a bundle over the moduli space.
- This superconnection not only provides the algebraic structure of correlation functions but also defines the chain - level generalizations of correlation functions.
### Main contributions
1. **Definition of quantum background**:
- The quantum background \( B \) is defined as a quadruple \( B=(P, m, N, \phi) \), where:
- \( P \) is a graded non - commutative ring, and \( m \) is a first - order element in \( P \) satisfying \( m^{2} = 0 \).
- \( N \) is a graded left \( P \)-module, and \( \phi \) is a zero - degree element in \( N \) satisfying \( m\cdot\phi = 0 \).
- Both \( P \) and \( N \) are free \( k[[\hbar]] \)-modules, and \( P /\hbar P \) is commutative.
2. **Quantum master equation**:
- The authors defined the quantum master equation:
\[
m e^{\pi/\hbar}m e^{-\pi/\hbar}-\hbar e^{\pi/\hbar}d(e^{-\pi/\hbar})\phi = 0
\]
- The solution set \( QMB(A) \) of this equation forms a functor \( QMB\in\text{Fun}_\Lambda \).
3. **Flat quantum superconnection**:
- When \( QFT_{B} \) is smooth formal, the authors constructed a flat quantum superconnection:
\[
\nabla:D\Pi\to D\Pi\otimes_{R}\Omega
\]
- This connection satisfies \( \nabla^{2} = 0 \), and its connection one - form part \( \nabla_{1} \) defines a flat, torsion - free connection, similar to the flat pencil connection in topological conformal field theories.
### Applications and significance
- **Extraction of correlation functions**:
- Through the quantum background and the quantum master equation, physical information such as correlation functions, generalized correlation functions, and generalized Ward identities can be extracted.
- **New algebras**
