Abstract:We describe some of the recent progress in the calculation of thermodynamic quantities in QCD at high temperatures and densities by weak-coupling techniques and extrapolation to realistic coupling strength. We argue that a (mostly) weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma at temperatures only a few times the transition temperature is not yet ruled out by the observed fast apparent thermalization at RHIC, as nonabelian plasma instabilities might provide an efficient mechanism for fast isotropization even in a collisionless plasma.

Abstract:This paper is a slightly modified version of the introductory part of a doctoral dissertation that contained also three original articles, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-ph/0212283" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/0212283">hep-ph/0212283</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-ph/0305183" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/0305183">hep-ph/0305183</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-ph/0311323" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/0311323">hep-ph/0311323</a>. Our purpose is to review the history and present status of finite-temperature perturbation theory as applied to the context of determining the equilibrium properties of quark-gluon plasma, most notably the pressure of QCD at finite temperatures and quark chemical potentials. We first introduce the general formalism of finite-temperature field theory and perturbation theory, then follow through the evaluation of the pressure order by order, and finally proceed to analyze the most recent, order g^6ln(g) results by comparing the perturbative predictions with lattice data. In the appendix we provide a somewhat pedagogical introduction to the most important computational techniques used in the perturbative framework, namely the analytic evaluation of multi-loop vacuum diagrams both in full QCD and in its three-dimensional high-T effective theories.

Abstract:At high baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$, the equation of state of QCD allows a weak-coupling expansion in the QCD coupling $\alpha_s$. The result is currently known up to and including the full next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) $\alpha_s^2$. Starting at this order, the computations are complicated by the modification of particle propagation in a dense medium, which necessitates non-perturbative treatment of the scale $\alpha_s^{1/2} \mu_B$. In this work, we apply a Hard-Thermal-Loop scheme for capturing the contributions of this scale to the weak-coupling expansion, and use it to determine the leading-logarithm contribution to NNNLO: $\alpha_s^3 \ln^2 \alpha_s$. This result is the first improvement to the equation of state of massless cold quark matter in 40 years. The new term is negligibly small, and thus significantly increases our confidence in the applicability of the weak-coupling expansion.

Hot perturbative QCD in a very strong magnetic background

Abstract:We compute the pressure, chiral condensate and strange quark number susceptibility from first principles within perturbative QCD at finite temperature and very high magnetic fields up to next-to-leading order and physical quark masses. The region of validity for our framework is given by $m_s \ll T \ll \sqrt{eB}$, where $m_s$ is the strange quark mass, $e$ is the fundamental electric charge, $T$ is the temperature, and $B$ is the magnetic field strength. We study the convergence of the perturbative series for the pressure for different choices of renormalization scale in the running coupling, $\alpha_s (T,B)$. Our results for the chiral condensate and strange quark number susceptibility can be directly compared to recent lattice QCD data away from the chiral transition. Even though current lattice results do not overlap with the region of validity above, perturbative results seem to be in the same ballpark.

Abstract:The strongly coupled system like the quark-hadron transition (if it is of first order) is becoming an active play yard for the physics of cosmological first-order phase transitions. However, the traditional field theoretic approach to strongly coupled first-order phase transitions is of great challenge, driving recent efforts from holographic dual theories with explicit numerical simulations. These holographic numerical simulations have revealed an intriguing linear correlation between the phase pressure difference (pressure difference away from the wall) to the nonrelativistic terminal velocity of an expanding planar wall, which has been reproduced analytically alongside both cylindrical and spherical walls from perfect-fluid hydrodynamics in our previous study but only for a bag equation of state. We also found, in our previous study, a universal quadratic correlation between the wall pressure difference (pressure difference near the bubble wall) to the nonrelativistic terminal wall velocity regardless of wall geometries. In this paper, we will generalize these analytic relations between the phase/wall pressure difference and terminal wall velocity into a more realistic equation of state beyond the simple bag model, providing the most general predictions so far for future tests from holographic numerical simulations of strongly coupled first-order phase transitions

The $g^6$ pressure of hot Yang-Mills theory: Canonical form of the integrand

Abstract:We present major progress towards the determination of the last missing piece for the pressure of a Yang-Mills plasma at high temperatures at order $g^6$ in the strong coupling constant. This order is of key importance due to its role in resolving the long-standing infrared problem of finite-temperature field theory within a dimensionally reduced effective field theory setup. By systematically applying linear transformations of integration variables, or momentum shifts, we resolve equivalences between different representations of Feynman sum-integrals. on the integrand level, transforming those into a canonical form. At the order $g^6$, this results in reducing a sum of O(100000) distinct sum-integrals which are produced from all four-loop vacuum diagrams down to merely 21. Furthermore, we succeed to map 11 of those onto known lower-loop structures. This leaves only 10 genuine 4-loop sum-integrals to be evaluated, thereby bringing the finalization of three decades of theoretical efforts within reach.

Perturbative QCD meets phase quenching: The pressure of cold quark matter

Abstract:Nonperturbative inequalities constrain the thermodynamic pressure of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with its phase-quenched version, a Sign-Problem-free theory amenable to lattice treatment. In the perturbative regime with a small QCD coupling constant $\alpha_s$, one of these inequalities manifests as an $O(\alpha_s^3)$ difference between the phase-quenched and QCD pressures at large baryon chemical potential. In this work, we generalize state-of-the-art algorithmic techniques used in collider physics in vacuum quantum field theory to address large-scale multiloop computations at finite chemical potential, by direct numerical integration of Feynman diagrams in momentum space. Using this novel approach, we evaluate this $O(\alpha_s^3)$ difference and show that it is a gauge-independent and small positive number compared to the known perturbative coefficients at this order. This implies that at high baryon densities, phase-quenched lattice simulations can provide a complementary nonperturbative method for accurately determining the pressure of cold quark matter at $O(\alpha_s^3)$.

Interplay between the weak-coupling results and the lattice data in dense QCD

Abstract:We discuss the interplay between two first-principles calculations of QCD at high density: perturbative results in the weak-coupling regime and the recent lattice-QCD result at finite isospin density. By comparing these two results, we verify empirically that the weak-coupling calculations of the bulk thermodynamics and the gap parameter for Cooper pairing between quarks can be applicable down to the quark chemical potential $\mu \sim 1$ GeV. Having verified the validity of the weak-coupling results in QCD at finite isospin density, we discuss possible effects on QCD at finite baryon density, which is relevant for the application to realistic environments such as neutron stars, by using the fact that QCD at finite baryon and isospin density have the common weak-coupling expansions. First, we show the size of the color-superconducting gap at finite baryon density is as small as a few MeV at $\mu = 1$ GeV, which implies that the color-flavor locked phase may be unstable against unpairing up to $\mu \sim 1.4$ GeV even in the weak-coupling regime. We also introduce a prescription to reduce the ambiguity arising from the undetermined renormalization scale in the weak-coupling calculation by matching with the lattice-QCD data. We demonstrate the effect of such reduction on neutron-star phenomenology by performing the Bayesian analysis.

The Pressure in 2, 2+1 and 3 Flavour QCD

Abstract:We calculate the pressure in QCD with two and three light quarks on a lattice of size 16^3x4 using tree level improved gauge and fermion actions. We argue that for temperatures T > 2T_c systematic effects due to the finite lattice cut-off and non-vanishing quark masses are below 15% in this calculation and give an estimate for the continuum extrapolated pressure in QCD with massless quarks. We find that the flavour dependence of the pressure is dominated by that of the Stefan-Boltzmann constant. Furthermore we perform a calculation of the pressure using 2 light (m_u,d/T=0.4) and one heavier quark (m_s/T = 1). In this case the pressure is reduced relative to that of three flavour QCD. This effect is stronger than expected from the mass dependence of an ideal Fermi gas.

Abstract:Applying the AdS/CFT correspondence, the expansion of the heavy-quark potential of the $ \mathcal{N} = 4 $ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at large N c is carried out to the sub-leading term in the large ’t Hooft coupling at a nonzero temperature. The strong coupling corresponds to the semi-classical expansion of the string-sigma model, the gravity dual of the Wilson loop operator, with the sub-leading term expressed in terms of functional determinants of fluctuations. The contribution of these determinants are evaluated numerically.
The force-force correlator at the hard thermal scale of hot QCD

Abstract:High-energy particles traversing the Quark-Gluon plasma experience modified (massive) dispersion, although their vacuum mass is negligible compared to the kinetic energy. Due to poor convergence of the perturbative series in the regime of soft loop momenta, a more precise determination of this effective mass is needed. This paper continues our investigation on the factorisation between strongly-coupled infrared classical and perturbative ultraviolet behavior. The former has been studied non-perturbatively within EQCD by determining a non-local operator on the lattice. By computing the temperature-scale contribution to the same operator in 4D QCD at next-to-leading order (NLO), we remove the ultraviolet divergence of the EQCD calculation with an opposite infrared divergence from the hard thermal scale. The result is a consistent, regulator-independent determination of the classical contribution where the emergence of new divergences signals sensitivities to new regions of phase space. We address the numerical impact of the classical and NLO thermal corrections on the convergence of the factorised approach and on the partial applicability of our results to calculations of transport coefficients.

Abstract:Continuum strong QCD is the application of models and continuum quantum field theory to the study of phenomena in hadronic physics, which includes; e.g., the spectrum of QCD bound states and their interactions; and the transition to, and properties of, a quark gluon plasma. We provide a contemporary perspective, couched primarily in terms of the Dyson-Schwinger equations but also making comparisons with other approaches and models. Our discourse provides a practitioners' guide to features of the Dyson-Schwinger equations [such as confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking] and canvasses phenomenological applications to light meson and baryon properties in cold, sparse QCD. These provide the foundation for an extension to hot, dense QCD, which is probed via the introduction of the intensive thermodynamic variables: chemical potential and temperature. We describe order parameters whose evolution signals deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration, and chronicle their use in demarcating the quark gluon plasma phase boundary and characterising the plasma's properties. Hadron traits change in an equilibrated plasma. We exemplify this and discuss putative signals of the effects. Finally, since plasma formation is not an equilibrium process, we discuss recent developments in kinetic theory and its application to describing the evolution from a relativistic heavy ion collision to an equilibrated quark gluon plasma.

Abstract:We confront our quasi-particle model for the equation of state of strongly interacting matter with recent first-principle QCD calculations. In particular, we test its applicability at finite baryon densities by comparing with Taylor expansion coefficients of the pressure for two quark flavours. We outline a chain of approximations starting from the Phi-functional approach to QCD which motivates the quasi-particle picture.

Weak rates in strongly coupled cold quark matter

Abstract:The rates of flavor-changing weak processes are crucial in determining the conditions of beta equilibrium in neutron stars and mergers, influencing the damping of oscillations, the stability of rotating pulsars, and the emission of gravitational waves. We derive a formula for these rates at nonzero temperature, to leading order in the Fermi coupling and exact in the QCD coupling. Utilizing a simple phenomenological holographic model dual to QCD, we study massless unpaired quark matter at high densities. We numerically compute the rate for small deviations from beta equilibrium and derive an analytic approximation for small temperatures. Our findings reveal that, compared to the perturbative result, the rate is suppressed by logarithmic factors of the temperature.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss effective strong coupling constants. Those are well behaved in the low-Q^2 domain, contrarily to alpha_s from pQCD. We present an extraction of an effective strong coupling constant from Jefferson Lab polarized data at intermediate and low Q^2. We also show how these data, together with spin sum rules, allow us to obtain the effective coupling constant over the entire Q^2 range. We then discuss the relation between the experimentally extracted coupling constant and theoretical calculations at low Q^2. We conclude on the importance of such study for the application of the AdS/CFT correspondence to QCD.

Abstract:We compute the pressure of hot quantum electrodynamics from the two-loop truncation of the 2PI effective action. Since the 2PI resummation guarantees gauge-fixing independence only up to the order of the truncation, our result for the pressure presents a gauge dependent contribution of O(e^4). We numerically characterize the credibility of this gauge-dependent calculation and find that the uncertainty due to gauge parameter dependence is under control for xi<1. Our calculation also suggests that the choice of Landau gauge may minimize gauge-dependent effects.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:The last five years have brought considerable progress in the study of the bound-state problem in continuum quantum field theory. We highlight a subset of that progress; viz., that made within the context of Dyson–Schwinger equation analyses of cold, sparse hadrons. Our focus is primarily on advances in the reliable computation, explanation and prediction of quantities that are truly measurable; but we also review aspects of a new paradigm that has condensates contained within hadrons, and explain that the asymptotic form of parton distribution amplitudes and functions are practically unreachable with terrestrial facilities. Given the pace of expansion in experiment and improvement in theory, it appears possible that the next five years will bring profound growth in our store of knowledge about hadrons and nuclei.
