Abstract:High transparency Nd:Y2O3 ceramics were prepared by vacuum sintering with La2O3 sintering additives. The optimum in-line transmittance of the sintered Nd: Y2O3 is 80.2% at the wavelength of 1100 nm, for which the content of La2O3 is 15.0 at%. Fully dense Nd: Y2O3 ceramic with an average grain size of 35.17 mu m was obtained. Vickers hardness, Young's modulus and the fracture toughness were measured to be 8.16 GPa, 171 GPa and 1.046 MPa.m(1/2), respectively. Thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal conductivity have been estimated as 8.19x10(-6) K-1 and 5.2 W/m.K, respectively. All the results indicate that Nd:Y2O3 transparent ceramic is a promising candidate for laser material.

Abstract:High transparency Nd: Y2O3 ceramics were prepared by vacuum sintering with La2O3 and ZrO2 sintering additives. The optimum in-line transmittance of the sintered Nd: Y2O3 is 80.98% at the wavelength of 1100nm, for which the content of La2O3 and ZrO2 are 10.0 and 3.0at.%, respectively. This specimen demonstrates homogeneous microstructure with the average grain size of 8.3m. The mechanism of sintering with La2O3 and ZrO2 aids and the optical properties was discussed. The absorption, emission cross section, and fluorescence lifetime have been estimated as 1.62x10(-20)cm(2), 5.13x10(-20)cm(2), and 232s, respectively. Vickers hardness and the fracture toughness were measured of 9.18GPa and 1.03Mpa center dot m(1/2), respectively. All the results indicate that Nd: Y2O3 transparent ceramic is a promising candidate for laser material.

Abstract:(NdxY0.9-xLa0.1)(2)O-3 (x = 0.005-0.04) transparent ceramics were fabricated by conventional solid-state processing. The radiative spectral properties of the ceramic samples were evaluated by fitting the Judd-Ofelt model with the absorption and emission data. (NdxY0.9-xLa0.1)(2)O-3 ceramics have broad absorption and emission bands with a radiative decay time of 328 mu s. The absorption cross section at 806 nm and stimulated emission cross section at 1078 nm are calculated to be 1.53x10(-20) and 5.22x10(-20) cm(2), respectively. The product of quantum efficiency and the ionic concentration (eta N) exhibited a peak value at 1.5 at% Nd3+ ion concentration, while the lifetime decreases dramatically from 300 mu s (0.5 at% Nd) to 49 mu s (4.0 at% Nd). With 1.0 at% Nd:Y1.8La0.2O3 ceramics acting as a laser medium, continuous-wave output power of 1.03 W was obtained at 1079.5 nm under an absorbed pump power of 7.2 W, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 18.4%.

Abstract:Neodymium doped YAG transparent ceramics were fabricated by vacuum reactive sintering method using commercial alpha-Al2O3, Y2O3 and Nd2O3 powders as the starting materials with both tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and MgO as sintering aids. The morphologies and microstructure of the powders and Nd:YAG transparent ceramics were investigated. Fully dense Nd:YAG ceramics with average grain size of similar to 10 mu m were obtained by vacuum sintering at 1780 degrees C for 8 h. No pores and grain-boundary phases were observed. The in-line transmittance of the ceramic was 83.8% at 1064 nm. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:As a new generation of solid state laser gain media,Nd∶YAG ceramics are now gradually substituting their single crystal or glass counterparts,owing to its advantages such as easy fabricated,cost-effectiveness and flexibility in fabricating with large size,etc.It has very considerable application prospect.In this paper,from three aspects including optical quality optimization of Nd∶YAG transparent ceramics,laser characteristic and the achievement of high power Nd∶YAG ceramic laser output,the research progress of Nd∶YAG transparent ceramics in China,Japan,America,Europe and Russia are introduced,respectively.The development of composite as well as co-doped Nd∶YAG ceramics in China and Japan are also introduced.Finally,the tendency and the main hinders for the development of transparent Nd∶YAG ceramics are summarized.

Abstract:\Various content of neodymia Nd: Y2O3 ( Nd: 0.5- 5.0 at.%) transparent ceramics were fabricated by vacuum sintering. The prepared Nd: Y2O3 ceramics exhibit high transmittance (similar to 80%) at the wavelength of 1100 nm. It is found that the increase in Nd concentration enhances the grain size growth, while decreases the phonon energy, which is benefit for improving both the luminescence quantum and up- conversion efficiency. The thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of the transparent 1.0 at.% Nd: Y2O3 ceramic is 5.51 W . ( m . K)- 1 and 8.11 X10 - 6 K - 1, respectively. The hardness and the fracture toughness of the transparent ceramic is 9.18 GPa and 1.03 Mpa . m 1/ 2, respectively. The results indicate that the Nd: Y2O3 transparent ceramic is a potential candidate material for laser.

Abstract:Nd-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) nano-crystallites were prepared by the co-precipitation method from a mixed solution of yttrium and aluminum nitrate using ammonium hydrogen carbonate as precipitant. The phase transition and structure of the prepared powder were investigated by means of XRD and TEM. The powder showed significantly less agglomeration of crystallites, indicating a high degree of sinterability. Transparent YAG ceramics were fabricated by vacuum sintering at 1700°C for 5h using as prepared powders. The results show that an amount of added TEOS less than 0.5wt% is suitable for the preparation of transparent ceramics. The average grain size of YAG ceramic obtained is about 2–3μm. The transmittance of the YAG ceramic increase as the sintering temperature and wavelength increase. The optical transmittance is about 55% in the visible range, and reaches almost 70% in the infrared.

Abstract:Highly transparent Nd:Lu2O3 ceramics were fabricated from synthesized nanocystalline powder after being sintered in flowing H-2 atmosphere at 1880 degrees C for 8 h. The linear optical transmittance of the polished sample with 1.4mm thickness reaches 75.5% at the wavelength of 1080nm. The absorption band at 807nm has a FWHM of about 4 nm and the absorption cross section sigma(abs) at 807 nm is 2.998 x 10(-2) cm(2). According to the Judd-Ofelt theory, the intensity parameters Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6) of 3at.%Nd:Lu2O3 sample are calculated to be 5.26x10(-20) cm(2), 13.11 x 10(-20) cm(2) and 8.37 x 10(-20) cm(2) respectively. The radiative lifetime tau(rad) of the F-4(3/2) level attains 165 mu s.

Abstract:Nd:YAG transparent ceramics were obtained by vacuum sintering from nanopowders synthesized by co-precipitation method. The co-precipitated powder was optimized by studying calcination temperature (from 800 to 1300 °C) of the precursor and ball-milling time (from 0 to 24 h). Influences of calcination temperature and ball-milling time on comprehensive properties of nanopowders were studied in detail. Influences of sintering conditions (sintering temperature and holding time) on transmittance and microstructure were also investigated. The conclusions based on a comprehensive study of the whole ceramics processing from the powders synthesis to Nd:YAG ceramics sintering. The co-precipitated powder calcined at 1250 °C with ball-milling for 12 h demonstrates relatively better comprehensive properties. The 1.0 at% Nd:YAG ceramic sample with the thickness of 1.3 mm sintered at 1775 °C for 20 h has the highest in-line transmittance of 76.0% at 1064 nm.

Abstract:Up-conversion (UC) luminescence properties of Nd:Y2O3 transparent ceramics are investigated. It is shown that, under a laser excitation of 808 nm, the samples exhibit significant UC emission. With an increase in the Nd3+ concentration, the intensity of green emission decreases, while the intensity of red emission first increases and then decreases. In particular, both green and red UC emissions are found to be two-photon processes, but with different quantum transition mechanisms. In addition, the dependence of UC emission intensity on the pumping power is studied. Our studies indicate that Nd:Y2O3 transparent ceramics are promising candidates as short-wavelength UC laser material. (C) 2019 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Compared to the single crystal counterparts, the laser ceramic materials can achieve higher ion doping concentrations and thus have a considerable application potential in thin disc lasers as laser gain media. In this study, heavily doped Nd:YAG transparent ceramics with excellent optical quality were fabricated, and a watt level thin disc laser output with high efficiency without saturation was realised in 3.0 at.% Nd:YAG ceramic (500 μm thickness). However, the trends in transmission and laser performance of Nd:YAG transparent ceramics were inconsistent with the Nd3+ doping concentration owing to the sintering additive effect of the introduced Nd2O3, and the laser performance of a 2.5 at.% Nd:YAG transparent ceramics with 1.0 mm thickness was almost identical to that of 1.0 at.% samples. This study demonstrates that the ceramic laser gain medium is of great significance for miniaturising and integrating solid state lasers.

Abstract:A solid-state laser material based on highly transparent cubic Nd3+:Lu2O3 ceramic was developed using nanocrystalline technology and a nonpress vacuum sintering method. Spectroscopic properties of this ceramic laser material were investigated. At room temperature under single-laser diode pumping, efficient continuous wave laser oscillation was demonstrated at two wavelengths of the 4F3/2→4I11/2 channel. The potential application of such a laser material was also discussed.

Abstract:The transparent Er, Nd co-doped Yttria ceramics with transparency around 78 percentage (in 500 - 2000 nm range without Fresnels correction) were fabricated successfully. It involved nanoparticle synthesis by coprecipitation method and sintering of pellets under high vacuum condition. The crystalline phase, particle size and element composition were confirmed by X- ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X- ray fluorescence techniques, respectively. The upconversion luminescence mechanisms involving energy transfer and non-radiative relaxation were analyzed. It is expected that, the result evolved from this study will provide better understanding of upconversion mechanism involved in Er, Nd codoped host material. The emission at both 563 nm and 1064 nm on 822 nm excitation proves potential of the ceramic material for dual mode efficient emitter.

Abstract:In this paper, NaY2F7 Eu transparent glass-ceramics were successfully synthesized through high temperature melting method. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and selected electron diffraction showed that the NaY2F7 nanocrystals were formed and uniformly dispersed in the glass matrix, with particle sizes ranging from 31 nm to 38 nm. Under the excitation of 340 nm, the blue band emission of Eu-2(+) was observed, and the peak value was 425 nm, indicating that Eu3+ was reduced to Eu-2(+) in the air atmosphere. Excited at 393 nm, the sample has a strong red emission, and Eu3+ emission peaks at 577, 589, 612, 650, and 701 nm were observed in the emission spectrum. By changing the excitation wavelength (340 - 400 nm), the emission color of NaY2F7:Eu transparent glass-ceramics can he adjusted from blue to red region. Under the excitation of 380 nm, the emission intensity of GC-660 sample at 413 K is 75.1% of that at 313 K. The results indicate that NaY2F7:Eu2+/Eu-3(+) glass ceramics have great potential applications in plant lighting.

Abstract:The influence of the microstructural features ( i.e. porosity content and pore size distribution) of Y 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –Nd 2 O 3 mixed powder compacts on their reactivity during reaction-sintering has been studied. By using either Uniaxial Pressing (UP) or Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP), it was possible to control the pore size distribution and compacity of green pellets. It was put in evidence that a higher compacity and green compact homogeneity, promoted by using the CIP process, increases the reaction sequence kinetics leading to the desired Nd:YAG phase at a reduced temperature. Also, the examination of sintering maps has shown that the sintering trajectories and the whole sintering stages are affected by the initial compacity. By increasing the initial compacity, the formation of a small amount of intragranular porosity cannot be totally avoided, but densification is favored over grain growth. As a result, better optical properties and high laser performances were obtained.

Abstract:Recent progress on rare-earth doped polycrystalline YAG transparent ceramics has made them an alternative novel solid-state laser gain material. In this paper, we present results of our research on polycrystalline RE: YAG transparent ceramics. High optical quality YAG ceramics doped with various rare-earth ( RE) ions such as Nd3+, Yb3+, Er3+, Tm3+, and Ho3+ have been successfully fabricated using the solid-state reactive sintering method. Highly efficient laser oscillations of the fabricated ceramics are demonstrated.

Abstract:Transparent laser ceramics are the attractive gain medium for solid-state lasers. However, they have not been applied to the fiber lasers due to the difficulty of forming green fibers by traditional methods. In this study, a novel route combined aqueous gelcasting with capillary glass tube was designed to prepare Yb:YAG transparent ceramic fiber with a diameter of 1.0 mm and 43.0 mm in length for the first time. The slurry with high solid loading and low viscosity was smartly inhaled into the capillary glass tube to conquer the difficulty of casting. The green fibers without cracks and deformation had highly dense microstructure. The in-line transmittance of highly doped 15.0 at.% Yb:YAG transparent ceramic disc prepared from the same preparation conditions of Yb:YAG ceramic fiber was 80.0 % at 1064 nm. This study provides a novel route to prepare transparent ceramic fiber differing from extrusion processing, promoting the development of fiber laser.

Abstract:Highly transparent Er:YAG ceramics with different Er doping concentrations were fabricated by a reactive sintering method under vacuum. The optical properties and the microstructures of the Er:YAG ceramics were investigated. For 3 mm thickness samples, the in-line transmittances of the as-fabricated Er:YAG ceramics at the wavelength of 1100 nm and 400 nm were about 84% and 82%, respectively. The micrograph of the Er:YAG transparent ceramics exhibited a pore-free structure and the average grain size was about 10 mu m. The grain boundary of the ceramics was clean and no secondary phase was detected. The absorption and emission spectra, the fluorescence decay traces of the Er:YAG ceramics were measured and discussed. The ceramics obtained may have potential use for eye-safe solid-state lasers partly replacing Er:YAG single crystals. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Via a facile solid reactive method, transparent Ln0.1La0.9GdZr2O7 (Ln = Nd, Yb) ceramics were successfully fabricated for the first time. The highest in-line transmittances of Nd:LaGdZr2O7 and Yb:LaGdZr2O7 ceramics reached 68% and 69%, respectively, at 1100 nm. The microstructure and crystal structure of Ln0.1La0.9GdZr2O7 transparent ceramics were fully investigated, indicating that the solid reactive technique is a good method of industrially fabricating Ln0.1La0.9GdZr2O7 transparent ceramics. The PL spectra demonstrated that Ln0.1La0.9GdZr2O7 ceramics can effectively be excited at 808 nm and 976 nm, which correlates with the widely applied output wavelengths of AlGaAs and InGaAs laser diodes. The luminescence decay curves were also studied, showing that the average fluorescence lifetimes of Nd0.1La0.9GdZr2O7 and Yb0.1La0.9GdZr2O7 transparent ceramics was 355 μs and 663 μs, respectively. Combined with its high temperature resistance and good mechanical strength, Ln0.1La0.9GdZr2O7 (Ln = Nd, Yb) transparent ceramics can have potential applications in Nd/Yb solid-state laser construction.
