Abstract:Propane direct dehydrogenation (PDH) is an attractive technology for propylene production that has received extensive attention. Molecular sieves with uniform porous structure, high thermal stability, and unique confinement capability have been proven to be ideal supports for well-dispersed active sites to generate efficient PDH performance. In this review, we describe the progress in the synthesis and PDH performance of metal-molecular sieve catalysts, including metal-mesoporous silica, metal-zeolite, and metal-hierarchical zeolite catalysts. The strategies in identifying and regulating active site microstructure and metal-molecular sieve interactions as well as their correlations with active site structure and PDH mechanism are introduced simultaneously. Finally, the current limitations and future opportunities of metal-molecular sieve materials in the PDH reaction are also discussed. This review is expected to provide some guidance for future catalyst design based on utilizing the molecular sieve’s structural confinement to facilitate propane activation and active site stabilization.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is currently an approach for the production of propylene with high industrial importance, especially in the context of the shale gas revolution and the growing global demands for propylene and downstream commodity chemicals. In this Perspective article, we comprehensively summarize the recent advances in the design of advanced catalysts for PDH and the new understanding of the structure-performance relationship in supported metal catalysts. Furthermore, we discuss the gaps between fundamental research and practical industrial applications in the catalyst developments for the PDH process. In particular, we overview some critical issues regarding catalyst regeneration and the compatibility of the catalyst and reactor design. Finally, we make perspectives on the future directions of PDH research, including the efforts toward achieving a unified understanding of the structure-performance relationship, innovation in reactor engineering, and translation of the knowledge accumulated on PDH studies to other important alkane dehydrogenation reactions.
Subnanometer Bimetallic Platinum-Zinc Clusters in Zeolites for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene, but the widely used Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from short-term stability and unsatisfactory propylene selectivity. Herein, we develop a ligand-protected direct hydrogen reduction method for encapsulating subnanometer bimetallic Pt-Zn clusters inside silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite. The introduction of Zn species significantly improved the stability of the Pt clusters and gave a superhigh propylene selectivity of 99.3 % with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 3.6-54 h-1 and specific activity of propylene formation of 65.5 mol C 3 H 6 gPt -1 h-1 (WHSV=108 h-1 ) at 550 °C. Moreover, no obvious deactivation was observed over PtZn4@S-1-H catalyst even after 13000 min on stream (WHSV=3.6 h-1 ), affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.001 h-1 , which is 200 times lower than that of the PtZn4/Al2 O3 counterpart under the same conditions. We also show that the introduction of Cs+ ions into the zeolite can improve the regeneration stability of catalysts, and the catalytic activity kept unchanged after four continuous cycles.

Abstract:Highly active and inexpensive catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) are required for largescale propylene production in industrial application. Compared to Pt- and Cr-based catalysts, Zn-based nanomaterial is a promising candidate due to its environmental friendliness and coking-resistant but remains a great challenge. In this study, we developed a novel multi-component structure consisting of low Pt and abundant active Zn species highly dispersed on Fe-doped S-1 zeolite as PDH catalyst. Specifically, Fe-doping in S-1 support provided anchoring sites for loading Zn species with uniform distribution. Moreover, the very small amount of Pt was applied as promoter, which is beneficial to achieve the re-dispersion of Zn species with the formation of Zn δ+ and Zn 2+ active sites. The resulting [email protected] catalyst exhibited the outstanding performance (conversion of propane: 40%, selectivity of propylene: 85%, and yield of propylene: 31.39%) as well as satisfactory regeneration ability. This improvement can be ascribed to the synergistic coupling between Pt promoter and the highly dispersed Zn species on modified S-1 support. This study opens a new way to design efficient and stable dehydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalytic dehydrogenation of propane to produce propylene (PDH) has been considered an efficient technique in the olefins supply chains. Metallic Pt is recognized as a promising catalyst for PDH reaction on account of its excellent affinity to CH bonds and CH activation ability. However, monometallic Pt catalysts usually exhibit an unsatisfactory performance (poor selectivity toward propylene and low catalytic stability), which is attributed to the severe sintering of Pt particles and the coke formation during the dehydrogenation process. Various metal promoters (M) are ingeniously introduced into Pt-based catalysts functioning via the formation of Pt-M alloys and/or intermetallics. Besides, several supports suitable for Pt-based catalysts have been probed to achieve high Pt dispersion and strong metal-support interaction. In this review, we precede the introduction of promoters and supports applied in Pt-based catalysts with an overview of PDH reaction mechanism. The specific roles of the promoter addition along with the advantages and drawbacks of state-of-art supports are significantly highlighted. Current challenges and prospects for the future development of Pt-based catalysts are also discussed.

Abstract:Light alkenes are the key building blocks in chemical industry. As a propene on-purpose production technology, propane dehydrogenation has drawn par-ticular attention due to the growing demand for propene and the discovery of large reserves of shale gas. The development of highly active and stable propane dehydrogenation catalyst is significant in the world wide research field. Supported platinum-based catalysts are widely studied for propane dehy-drogenation. This article reviews the developments of platinum-based catalysts in propane dehydrogenation, particularly focusing on the influence of promoter effect and support effect on the structure and catalytic performance, and especially on how do promoters and supports enable Pt to form highly dispersed and stable active sites. At the end, we propose the perspective research directions of propane dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Propene is an important chemical raw material with continuously growing demand from the propene downstream industry. Compared with the traditional catalytic cracking process and steam cracking of naphtha, the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) process is an attractive alternative to efficiently produce high-purity propene. Presently, the traditional Pt-based and Cr-based catalysts for PDH are mainly used in commercial processes. And the non-noble metal catalysts and carbon catalysts for PDH also receive increasing attention with the development of research both from academia and industry. In this review, the recent progress on the traditional catalysts, the emerging non-noble metal catalysts, and carbon catalysts was summarized, together with the discussion of the key research issues and development direction of these PDH catalysts. Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is an industrial technology for direct propylene production, which has received extensive attention and realized large-scale application. At present, the commercial Pt/Cr-based catalysts suffer from fast deactivation and inferior stability resulting from active species sintering and coke depositing. To overcome the above problems, several strategies such as the modification of support and the introduction of additives have been proposed to strengthen the catalytic performance and prolong the robust stability of Pt/Cr-based catalysts. This review firstly gives a brief description on the development of PDH and PDH catalysts. Then, the advanced research progress of supported noble metals, non-noble metals together with metal-free materials for PDH are systematically summarized along with the material design and active origin as well as the existing problems in the development of PDH catalysts. Furthermore, the review also emphasizes advanced synthetic strategies based on novel design of PDH catalysts with improved dehydrogenation activity and stability. Finally, the future challenges and directions of PDH catalysts are provided for the development their further industrial application.

Abstract:Direct dehydrogenation of propane to propylene (PDH) is a promising route to meet the ever-growing global propylene demand, but the industrial Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from serious deactivation derived from coke deposition and sintering under harsh reaction conditions. In this work, PtZn bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated into high-silica SSZ-13 zeolites (PtZn@SSZ-13) were synthesized via a facile ligand-protected interzeolite transformation strategy. In a PDH reaction, the synthesized 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 catalyst exhibits superior catalytic performance with a propane conversion of 23.7% and a propylene selectivity of 96.8%, which is significantly better than that of PtZn supported on high-silica SSZ-13 (0.5Pt3Zn/SSZ-13). Particularly, the high catalytic activity of this catalyst can be kept during three successive oxidation–reduction cycles. Detailed characterizations including HAADF-STEM, XPS, UV–Vis, H 2 -TPR reveal that the remarkable improvement of PDH performance is attributed to the PtZn synergistic effect as well as the confinement of SSZ-13 zeolites. The DFT calculations and microkinetic simulations also evidenced that the Pt particles anchored on the Zn-doped SSZ-13 zeolite pore framework possessed obviously higher propane dehydrogenation activity, whereas the anti-coking ability of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 was also stronger than Pt (1 1 1) surface, demonstrating the superior performance of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13.

Abstract:Propylene is one of the most important building blocks for the chemical industry. Traditional propylene production, which is based on oil-based cracking processes, is being challenged by the drastic changes in the global energy situation. The nonoxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) technique has emerged as a high-value-rising and promising alternative to traditional propylene production techniques due to the distinct price variance between propane and propylene. Although this technique has been commercialized for decades, thermally induced deactivation is still a big problem. Substantial progress has been made to inhibit the deactivation of propane dehydrogenation catalysts. In this review, we briefly introduce the mechanism of catalytic deactivation, including coke deposition and sintering of active compounds. The design strategies of PDH catalysts, focused on improving the catalytic stability and recyclability, are highlighted from the aspects of active site regulation, metal–support interaction enhancement, and support modification. Finally, the current status and prospects of future catalyst development are also discussed.

Abstract:Propylene serves as one of the most significant compounds in the chemical industry. Propane dehydrogenation (PDH), an “on purpose” propylene production technology is developing. Pt- and CrO x -based catalysts are widely applied in commercialized PDH processes, and both exhibit high activity and propylene yields. However, as an intensively endothermic process, PDH requires operation at high temperatures (generally above 500 °C), which restricts the C3H6 selectivity and catalyst structure stability on account of coking side reactions, particle sintering, and so forth. Nanostructured catalysts (NCs) based on metals and/or metal oxides with tunable geometric and electronic properties play significant roles because such features intrinsically influence the adsorption of propyl intermediates on the catalyst surface. However, thermodynamical metastability of these NCs results in grand challenges in their structure-controlled preparation. The regulation of material structure and reaction performance at the molecular and atomic levels has attracted extended attention over the past few years. This Account describes our recent advances in controllable regulation of metal and oxide NCs toward efficient propane dehydrogenation. As a structure-insensitive reaction, the dehydrogenation of propane can occur on an individual active site, while larger ensembles of active sites also induce structure-sensitive side reactions, leading to C–C cracking and coke deposition. This paper is aimed at delivering general fundamentals for rational design of NCs in PDH reactions. We start with the catalytic kinetics on the active sites regarding the adsorption of key propyl intermediates on the surface. In subsequent sections, we present the effective regulation strategies for metal and oxide NCs by promoter and support effects. Upon metal NCs, coke deposition and nanoparticles (NPs) sintering tend to occur, which can be suppressed with the increase of geometric separation and charge density of surface active sites by changing alloy compositions, ordered intermetallic alloys, single-atom catalysts, core–shell, and metal–oxide interface structures. Notably, the confinement approach of embedding active sites in zeolite frameworks significantly inhibits the sintering of metal NPs. As alternatives to metals, metal oxides exhibit lower cost but higher barriers of C–H activation and coking inclination. The C–H bond cleavage has been promoted by inducing intrinsic defect sites, such as oxygen vacancies, hydroxyls, and hydrides on the surface and heterogeneous doping in the bulk. Importantly, the structures of the submonolayer/monolayer triggered by spontaneous dispersion and confinement in mesoporous materials significantly improve the oxide activity and stability. All of these strategies have been essential for the efficient PDH reactions. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives are also discussed. It is hoped that the deliberate manipulation of nanostructured catalysts to regulate the reaction mechanism will hold the key to efficient alkane conversion.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) presents a promising alternative to naphtha steam cracking processes for propene production. However, the current commercial catalysts are plagued by the toxicity of Cr (VI) and the exorbitant cost of Pt. We have developed an efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective catalyst (CoO x @MFI) in which reduction-resistant CoO x clusters are embedded in situ into the zeolite framework. This catalyst exhibits good catalytic performances (59.0% propane conversion and 93.0% propene selectivity) in PDH reactions, surpassing most Co-based catalysts and competing with Pt-based ones. Crucially, both in situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the MFI zeolite-stabilized Co–O moieties are highly favorable for C–H bond activation via an O atom as a Lewis base, which can attach to an H atom and generate [CoOH]+ intermediate with remarkable efficiency.

Abstract:Metal-exchanged zeolites are well-known propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalysts; however, the structure of the active species remains unresolved. In this review, existing PDH catalysts are first surveyed, and then the current understanding of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts is described in detail. The case of Ga/H-ZSM-5 is employed to showcase that advances in the understanding of structure-activity relations are often accompanied by technological or conceptional breakthroughs. The understanding of Ga speciation at PDH conditions has evolved owing to the advent of in situ/operando characterizations and to the realization that the local coordination environment of Ga species afforded by the zeolite support has a decisive impact on the active site structure. In situ/operando quantitative characterization of catalysts, rigorous determination of intrinsic reaction rates, and predictive computational modeling are all significant in identifying the most active structure in these complex systems. The reaction mechanism could be both intricately related to and nearly independent of the details of the assumed active structure, as in the two main proposed PDH mechanisms on Ga/H-ZSM-5, that is, the carbenium mechanism and the alkyl mechanism. Perspectives on potential approaches to further elucidate the active structure of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts and reaction mechanisms are discussed in the final section.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a commercial propylene production technology that has received much attention, but high reaction temperatures result in a decrease of propylene selectivity and catalyst stability. This paper describes a single-site [PtZn4] catalyst by assembling atomically ordered intermetallic alloy (IMA) as a selective and ultrastable PDH catalyst. The catalyst enables more than 95% of propylene selectivity from 520°C to 620°C. No obvious deactivation is observed within the 160-h test, superior to PtSn/Al2O3 and state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts. Based on in situ X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, and density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the surface [PtZn4] ensembles in PtZn IMAs serve as the key active site structures, wherein the geometry-isolated and electron-rich Pt1 site in [PtZn4] ensembles readily promotes the first and second C–H cleavage of propane but inhibits further dehydrogenation of surface-bounded propylene. This significantly improves the selectivity and stability by prohibiting coke side reactions.

Abstract:Zeolite-confined Pt-based bimetallic catalysts have shown great potential in the direct dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction, yet the low affinity of the bimetallic species with the zeolite supports often results in catalytic deactivation during long-term reactions. Creating strong interactions between metals and supports holds the promise to address this challenge. Herein, we report S-1 zeolite confined Pt3Sn bimetallic catalysts that exhibit enhanced activity and stability for PDH through electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI). Notably, the optimized Pt3Sn/S-1 catalyst shows a 310-fold increase in the catalytic stability compared to its SiO2-supported counterpart. Experimental and theoretical studies unveil that the Pt3Sn/S-1 catalyst is characterized by direct Sn–Pt–O–Si(OSi)3 interfacial bonds. The strong chemical bonding leads to electron transfer from Pt3Sn to S-1, signifying the strong EMSI effect that modulates the electronic and chemical properties of Pt3Sn. The presence of EMSI enhances the adsorption of propane and facilitate the desorption of propylene, consequently boosting both the activity and selectivity of the catalyst. This work highlights the profound impact of metal-support interactions for the development of high-performance PDH catalysts.

Abstract:The development of environment-friendly, stable, and efficient catalysts to substitute Pt and Cr-based catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is of great importance but challenging to make. Herein, we use zinc gluconate (Zn(C6H12O7)2), an organometallic biomolecule, to embed Zn atoms into pure silica MFI zeolite framework (Zn-MFI) for PDH reaction. Due to the protection by the glucosyl groups in Zn(C6H12O7)2, Zn atoms can be well embedded into the MFI zeolite framework. Multi-scale characterizations (e.g., Cs-corrected HAADF-STEM, FTIR, UV–vis, and NMR spectroscopy) and DFT calculations demonstrate the formation of uniform tetrahedrally coordinated Zn sites in the MFI zeolite framework with two Zn–O–Si and two Zn⋯OH–Si linkages ({(≡SiO)2Zn(HO–Si≡)2}). The Zn-MFI zeolites are used for PDH, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance. Pyridine-FTIR, C3H6-FTIR, C3H6-TPD/MS, and contrast experiments reveal the unique Zn active sites in Zn-MFI zeolites can promote the C–H bond cleavage and weaken the propylene adsorption, thus guaranteeing high activity and selectivity for PDH. The excellent catalytic performance of Zn-MFI zeolites indicates their promising utilization in industry.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is promising for producing high value-added propylene. The discovery of a more efficient, economical, and nontoxic PDH catalyst is of great importance. Herein, we found zinc hydrides ([ZnH]+) as the highly reactive site for PDH. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical studies reveal that [ZnH]+ was transformed from zinc hydroxyl ([ZnOH]+) sites under reductive conditions. Accordingly, the formation of [ZnH]+ can be controlled by adjusting the amount of zinc hydroxyl ([ZnOH]+) species by various additives. The optimized Cu–ZnO@S-1 consists of exclusively isolated [ZnOH]+ sites, which help produce more [ZnH]+ toward optimal PDH activity. Specifically, the catalyst enables 43% propane conversion with >88% propylene selectivity, close to the thermodynamic equilibrium. This efficient PDH performance was attributed to the electron-deficient Zn in [ZnH]+ that can lower the dehydrogenation barrier, and the Cu-modified [ZnH]+ structure favors the direct PDH pathway to further promote the formation of propylene and H2.
