Abstract:In this paper we deal with the following problem: Find all Riemannian metrics on a manifold that can be realized isometrically as immersed hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space. We study this problem for a wide class of metrics on hypersurfaces arising from Codazzi tensors.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the critical metrics with cyclic parallel Ricci tensor for volume functional on manifolds with boundary. We show such metric is isometric to a geodesic ball in a simply connected space form $\mathbb {R}^n$, $\mathbb {H}^n$ or $\mathbb {S}^n$ under some extra conditions.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of finding closed hypersurfaces with prescribed Weingarten curvature in a large class of Riemannian manifolds. Under some sufficient conditions, we obtain an existence result by establishing a priori estimates and standard degree theory for the admissible solutions to the prescribed curvature equation. We mainly show that the primary technique developed in Urbas, Wang and the second author’s work in 2004 is flexible enough to be used in more general ambient geometry.

Abstract:A decomposition theorem is established for a class of closed Riemannian submanifolds immersed in a space form of constant sectional curvature. In particular, it is shown that if $M$ has nonnegative sectional curvature and admits a Codazzi tensor with "parallel mean curvature", then $M$ is locally isometric to a direct product of irreducible factors determined by the spectrum of that tensor. This decomposition is global when $M$ is simply connected, and generalizes what is known for immersed submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of (0,m)-Codazzi tensors relative to an affine connection which extends the well known concept for m = 2. On compact Riemannian surfaces of genus γ we determine the dimension of the R-vector space of traceless Codazzi tensors, which depends on m and γ only, additionally we extend these result for genus zero. We give some exemplary applications to submanifolds in affine and in Riemannian geometry and to Weyl geometries.

Abstract:In this paper, we first calculate for a Riemannian manifold the minimal norm tensor of the covariant derivative of the Ricci curvature. Then we show that, for an n -dimensional ( ) umbilic-free hypersurface of the space form, if the covariant derivative of the Ricci curvature has vanishing minimal norm tensor, it has parallel Ricci curvature or it is a special rotational hypersurface .

Abstract:A three dimensional Lorentzian hypersurface x:M13→R14 is called conformally flat if its induced metric is conformal to the flat Lorentzian metric, this property is preserved under the conformal transformation of R14. Using the projective light-cone model, for those ones whose shape operators have a pair of complex conjugate eigenvalues, we study the integrability condition by constructing a scalar conformal invariant and a canonical moving frame in this paper. It follows that these hypersurfaces can be determined by the solutions to a system of three-order partial differential equations.

Abstract:We consider smooth Riemannian surfaces whose curvature K satisfies the relation away from points where for some , which we call generalized Ricci surfaces. We prove some isometric immersion theorems allowing points where using properties of log-harmonic functions. For instance, we obtain a characterization of Riemannian surfaces that locally admit minimal isometric immersions, possibly with umbilical points, into a 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold of constant sectional curvature. We also give an application to convex affine spheres. Finally, we study compact generalized Ricci surfaces: we obtain topological obstructions and construct examples.

Abstract:A 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with a tensor structure of type $(1,1)$, whose fourth power is the identity, is considered. This structure acts as an isometry with respect to the metric. A Riemannian almost product manifold associated with such a manifold is also studied. It turns out, that the almost product manifold belongs to the class of locally conformal Riemannian product manifolds of the Naveira classification. Conditions for the additional structures of the manifolds to be parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the metric were found. Classes of almost Einstein manifolds and Einstein manifolds are determined and some of their curvature properties are obtained. As examples of these manifolds, a hypersurface is considered.

Abstract:The twistor construction for Riemannian manifolds is extended to the case of manifolds endowed with generalized metrics (in the sense of generalized geometry à la Hitchin). The generalized twistor space associated to such a manifold is defined as the bundle of generalized complex structures on the tangent spaces of the manifold compatible with the given generalized metric. This space admits natural generalized almost complex structures whose integrability conditions are found in the paper. An interesting feature of the generalized twistor spaces discussed in it is the existence of intrinsic isomorphisms.

Abstract:In this manuscript we consider non-degenerate surfaces $\Sigma^2$ immersed in a 3-dimensional homogeneous space $\mathbb{L}^3(\kappa,\tau)$ endowed with two different metrics, the one induced by the Riemannian metric of $\mathbb{E}^3(\kappa,\tau)$ and the non-degenerate metric inherited by the Lorentzian one of $\mathbb{L}^3(\kappa,\tau)$. Therefore, we have two different geometries on $\Sigma^2$ and we can compare them. In particular, we can consider the Gaussian curvature functions which respect to both metrics and study the geometry of the surfaces satisfying that both Gaussian curvature functions are opposite. We will call these surfaces anisocurved surfaces. In order to obtain our main results we also need to impose some extra assumptions regarding the extrinsic curvatures with respect to both metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, regarding the Riemannian product S 2 × S 2 \mathbb {S}^2\times \mathbb {S}^2 of two unit 2 2 -spheres as a Kähler surface, we study its real hypersurfaces with typical geometric properties. First, we classify the real hypersurfaces of S 2 × S 2 \mathbb {S}^2\times \mathbb {S}^2 with isometric Reeb flow and then, by using a Simons’ type inequality, a characterization of these compact real hypersurfaces is provided. Next, we classify Hopf hypersurfaces of S 2 × S 2 \mathbb {S}^2\times \mathbb {S}^2 with constant product angle function. Finally, we classify Hopf hypersurfaces of S 2 × S 2 \mathbb {S}^2\times \mathbb {S}^2 with parallel Ricci tensor.

Abstract:Let f: M-n hooked right arrow+ Sn+1 subset of Rn+2 be an n-dimensional complete oriented Riemannian manifold minimally immersed in an (n + 1)-dimensional unit sphere Sn+1. Denote by S-+(n+1) the upper closed hemisphere. If f(M-n) subset of or equal to + S-+(n+1), then under some curvature conditions the authors can get that the isometric immersion is a totally embedding. They also generalize a theorem of Li Hai Zhong on hypersurface of space form with costant scalar curvature.

Abstract:We extend the results about left-invariant Codazzi tensor fields on Lie groups equipped with left-invariant Riemannian metrics obtained by d'Atri in 1985 to the setting of reductive homogeneous spaces $G/H$, where the curvature of the canonical connection of second kind associated with the fixed reductive decomposition $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{h}\oplus\mathfrak{m}$ enters the picture. In particular, we show that invariant Codazzi tensor fields on a naturally reductive homogeneous space are parallel.

Abstract:We review classical approaches to the problem of isometrically embedding a Riemannian surface into Euclidean 3-space, including coordinate-based approaches exposited by Darboux and Eisenhart, as well as the moving-frames based approaches advocated by Cartan. In particular, the first approach involves reducing the problem to solving a single PDE; settling the question of when this PDE is integrable by the method of Darboux is the subject of this short note. This is surprisingly easy, since it is related to the analogous question for the isometric embedding system arising from the moving frames approach, and this was accomplished in recent joint work with Clelland, Tehseen and Vassiliou (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1801.00241" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1801.00241">arXiv:1801.00241</a>).

Abstract:Reparametrization invariant Sobolev metrics on spaces of regular curves have been shown to be of importance in the field of mathematical shape analysis. For practical applications, one usually discretizes the space of smooth curves and considers the induced Riemannian metric on a finite dimensional approximation space. Surprisingly, the theoretical properties of the corresponding finite dimensional Riemannian manifolds have not yet been studied in detail, which is the content of the present article. Our main theorem concerns metric and geodesic completeness and mirrors the results of the infinite dimensional setting as obtained by Bruveris, Michor and Mumford.

Isoparametric hypersurfaces in symmetric spaces of non-compact type and higher rank

Abstract:We construct inhomogeneous isoparametric families of hypersurfaces with non-austere focal set on each symmetric space of non-compact type and rank greater than or equal to 3. If the rank is greater than or equal to 4, there are infinitely many such examples. Our construction yields the first examples of isoparametric families on any Riemannian manifold known to have a non-austere focal set. They can be obtained from a new general extension method of submanifolds from Euclidean spaces to symmetric spaces of non-compact type. This method preserves the mean curvature and isoparametricity, among other geometric properties.

Abstract:We study several classes of Riemannian manifolds which are defined by imposing a certain condition on the Ricci tensor. We consider the following cases: Ricci recurrent, Cotton, quasi Einstein and pseudo Ricci symmetric condition. Such conditions can be interpreted as overdetermined PDE systems whose unknowns are the components of the Riemannian metric, and perhaps in addition some auxiliary functions. Hence even if the dimension of the manifold is small it is not easy to compute interesting examples by hand, and indeed very few examples appear in the literature. We will present large families of nontrivial examples of such manifolds. The relevant PDE systems are first transformed to an involutive form. After that in many cases one can actually solve the resulting system explicitly. However, the involutive form itself already gives a lot of information about the possible solutions to the given problem. We will also discuss some relationships between the relevant classes.

Abstract:The notions of (metric) hypersurface data were introduced in [Mars,2013] as a tool to analyze, from an abstract viewpoint, hypersurfaces of arbitrary signature in pseudo-riemannian manifolds. In this paper, general geometric properties of these notions are studied. In particular, the properties of the gauge group inherent to the geometric construction are analyzed and the metric hypersurface connection and its corresponding curvature tensor are studied. The results set up the stage for various potential applications. The particular but relevant case of spherical symmetry is considered in detail. In particular, a collection of gauge invariant quantities and a radial covariant derivative is introduced, such that the constraint equations of the Einstein field equations with matter can be written in a very compact form. The general solution of these equations in the vacuum case and Lorentzian ambient signature is obtained, and a generalization of the Birkhoff theorem to this abstract hypersurface setting is derived.
