Abstract:We report about recent progress in computing four-loop massive correlators. The expansion of these correlators in the external momentum leads to vacuum integrals. The calculation of these vacuum integrals can be used to determine Taylor expansion coefficients of the vacuum polarization function and decoupling functions in perturbative Quantum chromodynamics. New results at four-loop order for the lowest Taylor expansion coefficient of the vacuum polarization function and for the decoupling relation are presented.
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on two aspects: 1. **Calculate the lowest Taylor expansion coefficient of the four - loop - order vacuum polarization function**: - The vacuum polarization function \( \Pi(q^2) \) describes the correction of the photon propagator in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). By calculating its lowest Taylor expansion coefficient \( C_0 \), the relationship between electromagnetic interactions in different renormalization schemes can be studied. - Specifically, this coefficient is related to the conversion between the on - shell renormalization and the minimal subtraction (MS - scheme) renormalization schemes of the electromagnetic coupling constant. The formula is as follows: \[ \alpha_{\text{em}}=\alpha_{\text{em}}\left(1 + e^2\Pi(q^2 = 0)\right) \] - The accurate calculation of this coefficient is of great significance for determining the masses of charm quarks and bottom quarks. 2. **Calculate the decoupling relation at the four - loop - order**: - In quantum chromodynamics, when the mass of a heavy quark is much larger than the characteristic momentum scale of the reaction, two different large - mass scales \( \sqrt{s} \) and \( m_h \) will appear, which will lead to potential large - logarithm terms. - According to the Appelquist - Carazzone theorem, the effects of heavy particles will eventually "decouple" from low - energy physics. However, in the mass - independent renormalization scheme, this decoupling theorem does not hold in a simple form. - The paper solves this problem by calculating the decoupling function \( \zeta_g \) at the four - loop - order. The decoupling function is used to express the coupling constant \( \alpha_s'(\mu) \) of the effective theory as a function of the coupling constant \( \alpha_s(\mu) \) of the full theory: \[ \alpha_s'(\mu)=\alpha_s(\mu)\zeta_g^2(\alpha_s(\mu), x),\quad x = \log\left(\frac{\mu^2}{m_h^2}\right) \] - This result has important phenomenological significance for the evolution of the strong coupling constant from the \( \tau \) - lepton scale \( \alpha_s(m_\tau) \) to the Z - boson scale \( \alpha_s(M_Z) \). In summary, by calculating the lowest Taylor expansion coefficient of the four - loop - order vacuum polarization function and the decoupling relation, this paper solves the key problems in multi - loop - graph calculations in quantum chromodynamics and provides theoretical support for the accurate measurement and understanding of strong interactions.
