Far-Infrared Emission From E and E/S0 Galaxies

Abstract:Studies of cold material through IRAS 60um and 100um observations indicated that half of ordinary E and E/S0 galaxies were detected above the 3 sigma level, indicating that cold gas is common, although no correlation was found between the optical and far- infrared fluxes. Most detections were near the instrumental threshold, and given an improved understanding of detection confidence, we reconsider the 60um and 100um detection rate. After excluding active galactic nuclei, peculiar systems, and background contamination, only 15 non-peculiar E and E/S0 galaxies from the RSA catalog are detected above the 98% confidence level, about 12% of the sample. An unusually high percentage of these 15 galaxies possess cold gas (HI, CO) and optical emission lines (Halpha), supporting the presence of gas cooler than 10E4 K. The 60um to 100um flux ratios imply a median dust temperature for the sample of 30 K, with a range of 23-38 K. These detections define the upper envelope of the optical to far-infrared relationship, F_fir propto F_B^0.24+/-0.08, showing that optically bright objects are also brighter in the infrared, although with considerable dispersion. A luminosity correlation is present with L_fir propto L_B^1.65+/-0.28, but the dust temperature is uncorrelated with luminosity. Models that contain large dust grains composed of amorphous carbon plus silicates come close to reproducing the typical 60um to 100um flux ratios, the far-infrared luminosity, and the L_fir - L_B relationship.

Abstract:A fundamental question of extra-galactic astronomy that is yet to be fully understood, concerns the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) and supermassive black hole (SMBH) activity with cosmic time, as well as their interplay and how it impacts galaxy evolution. A primary focus that could shed more light on these questions is the study of merging systems, comprising highly star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the earliest stages of galactic formation. However, it is essential to explore complementary selection methods across multiple wavelengths. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of a sample of high-redshift ($z>3$) far-infrared (far-IR) and radio-emitting galaxies in the highest possible spatial resolution. In order to select the galactic population of our interest, we selected galaxies that present relatively compact radio morphologies at 1.4 GHz as well as a far-IR spectrum that peaks in flux at $\lambda \geq 350 \, \mu m$. For these selection criteria, we used the COSMOS and ECDF-S fields, which provide high spectral and spatial resolution at a multi-wavelength scale. We derived a sample of eight galaxies that were identified either photometrically or spectroscopically at $z>3$ from literature studies and by our team. A thorough investigation of available optical, near-IR, and millimetre (mm) imaging reveals a possible merging scenario in five out of eight cases in our sample. Additionally, available multi-wavelength photometry strongly suggests active star formation at the $10^3 \, M_{\odot}/yr$ level in massive systems co-hosting an active SMBH. Comparison of these results with previous studies, suggests that our selection method preferentially identifies galaxies hosting an active SMBH, as well as a strong SFG component, resulting in high SFR and IR luminosity.

Evolution of the Far-Infrared-Radio Correlation and Infrared SEDs of Massive Galaxies over z = 0 - 2

Abstract:We investigate the far-infrared-radio correlation (FRC) of stellar-mass-selected galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South using far-infrared imaging from Spitzer and radio imaging from the Very Large Array and Giant Metre-Wave Radio Telescope. We stack in redshift bins to probe galaxies below the noise and confusion limits. Radio fluxes are K-corrected using observed flux ratios, leading to tentative evidence for an evolution in spectral index. We compare spectral energy distribution (SED) templates of local galaxies for K-correcting FIR fluxes, and show that the data are best fit by a quiescent spiral template (M51) rather than a warm starburst (M82) or ULIRG (Arp220), implying a predominance of cold dust in massive galaxies at high redshift. In contrast we measure total infrared luminosities that are consistent with high star-formation rates. We observe that the FRC index (q) does not evolve significantly over z=0-2 when computed from K-corrected 24 or 160-mum photometry, but that using 70-mum fluxes leads to an apparent decline in q beyond z~1. This suggests some change in the SED at high redshift, either a steepening of the spectrum at rest-frame ~25-35mum or a deficiency at ~70mum leading to a drop in the total infrared/radio ratios. We compare our results to other work in the literature and find synergies with recent findings on the high-redshift FRC, high specific star-formation rates of massive galaxies and the cold dust temperatures in these galaxies.

Abstract:The FIR(60 microns) and UV (0.2 microns) emissions of individual star forming galaxies are compared to the mean properties of the local Universe. Almost all the galaxies exhibit a FIR to UV flux ratio larger than the ratio of the FIR and UV luminosity densities. It is likely to be due to the contribution of low luminosity galaxies to the UV luminosity density: these galaxies are deficient in any survey. As the galaxies become brighter in FIR their FIR to UV flux ratio increases: (around 0.2 microns) it implies an increase of 0.5 mag of extinction (around 0.2 microns) per decade of FIR (60 microns) luminosity. This trend is extended and amplified in Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies observed at low and high redshift. The Lyman Break galaxies detected by their U dropout in the HDF seem to have less extreme properties more compatible with the trend found in the nearby star forming galaxies. The detection limits of the NGST and of the future large millimeter array (ALMA) in terms of FIR to UV ratios are presented.

Highlights of Astronomy

Abstract:Abstract Observations made using COBE , SCUBA, ISO and MAMBO have provided a reasonable working knowledge of both the intensity of the submm and far-infrared background radiation and the source counts of luminous high-redshift dusty galaxies. However, because there are uncertainties in the background intensity determinations, the samples of detected galaxies are small, and most importantly, their redshift distributions are very incomplete, details of the evolution of dusty galaxies remain unresolved. The next steps forward in the field will be the launches of SIRTF and ASTRO-F , the commissioning of SOFIA and new, more capable ground-based mm/submm-wave cameras - BOLOCAM, SHARC-II and SCUBA-II - the use of ultra-long duration balloon experiments, such as BLAST, the construction of ALMA and the arrival of FIRST , and ultimately the advent of space-borne far-infrared interferometers, such as SPECS . There are also exciting prospects for direct mm/submm-wave CO-line redshift surveys using wide-band spectrographs. Using these new facilities, the number of high-redshift dusty galaxies known will be increased dramatically. Spectroscopy using SIRTF , SOFIA and FIRST will probe the astrophysical processes within these sources in detail, hopefully addressing the open question of the fraction of the counts and background radiation that is generated by the formation of high-mass stars and by active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The spatial and spectral structure of distant dusty galaxies will finally be resolved in detail using ALMA and SPECS .

Abstract:By investigating properties from the infrared (IR) to the optical of IR-selected QSOs (IR QSOs), optically selected QSOs (PG QSOs), and narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the local Universe, we find that the IR excess in IR QSOs is mostly in the far-IR, and their IR spectral indices suggest that the excess emission is caused by starbursts rather than AGNs. The ratio of the star formation rate and the accretion rate is about several hundred for IR QSOs, but decreases with the central black hole mass. We also study an optically selected QSO sample at high redshift with hyper-luminous far-IR luminosities. We find that similar to IR QSOs at low redshift, these high redshift QSOs have a far-IR excess also, which should be due to the contribution of starbursts heating the dust. But the ratio of star formation rate to accretion rate for QSOs at high redshift is typically smaller than that for IR QSOs at low redshift, which hints at the relatively faster growth of black holes at early epochs.
The differential magnification of high-redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies

Abstract:A class of extremely luminous high‐redshift galaxies has recently been detected in unbiased submillimetre‐wave surveys using the Submillimetre Common‐User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) camera at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Most of the luminosity of these galaxies is emitted from warm interstellar dust grains, and they could be the high‐redshift counterparts of the low‐redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). Only one ‐‐ SMM J02399‐0136 ‐‐ has yet been studied in detail. Three other very luminous high‐redshift dusty galaxies with well‐determined spectral energy distributions in the mid‐infrared waveband are known ‐‐ IRAS F10214+4724, H1413+117 and APM 08279+5255. These were detected serendipitously rather than in unbiased surveys, and are all gravitationally lensed by a foreground galaxy. Two ‐‐ H1413+117 and APM 08279+5255 ‐‐ appear to emit a significantly greater fraction of their luminosity in the mid‐infrared waveband, compared with both low‐redshift ULIRGs and high‐redshift submillimetre‐selected galaxies. This can be explained by a systematically greater lensing magnification of hotter regions of the source compared with cooler regions: differential magnification. This effect can confuse the interpretation of the properties of distant ultraluminous galaxies that are lensed by intervening galaxies, but offers a possible way to investigate the temperature distribution of dust in their nuclei on scales of tens of pc.

Multiwavelength Properties of Infrared-Faint Radio Sources Based on Spectral Energy Distribution Analysis

Abstract:Infrared-faint radio sources (IFRSs) are believed to be a rare class of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (RL AGN) characterized by their high radio-to-infrared flux density ratios of up to several thousands. Previous studies have shown that a fraction of IFRSs are likely to be hosted in dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs). In this paper, our aim was to probe the dust properties, star formation rate (SFR), and AGN activity of IFRSs by modeling the UV-to-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of 20 IFRSs with spectroscopic redshifts ranging from 1.2 to 3.7. We compare the Bayesian evidence of a three-component model (stellar, AGN and cold dust) with that of a two-component model (stellar and cold dust) for six IFRSs in our sample with far-infrared (FIR) photometry and find that the three-component model has significantly higher Bayesian evidence, suggesting that IFRSs are most likely to be AGN. The median SED of our IFRS sample shows similarities to AGN-starburst composite in the IR regime. The derived IR luminosities of IFRSs indicate that they are low-luminosity counterparts of high-redshift radio galaxies. We disentangle the contributions of AGN-heated and star-formation-heated dust to the IR luminosity of IFRSs and find that our sample is likely AGN-dominated. However, despite the evidence for significant impact of AGN on the host galaxy, the AGN luminosity of our sample does not show correlation with the SFR of the sources.

Abstract:Abstract We present an extensive archival analysis of a sample of local galaxies, combining multiwavelength data from GALEX, Spitzer, and Herschel to investigate “blue-side” mid-infrared (MIR) and “red-side” far-infrared (FIR) color–color correlations within the observed infrared spectral energy distributions. Our sample largely consists of the KINGFISH galaxies, with the important addition of a select few including NGC 5236 (M83) and NGC 4449. With data from the far-ultraviolet (∼0.15 μ m) through 500 μ m convolved to common angular resolution, we measure the photometry of kiloparsec-scale star-forming regions 36′′ × 36′′ in size. Star formation rates (SFRs), stellar masses, and metallicity distributions are derived throughout our sample. Focusing on the f 70 / f 500 “FIR” and f 8 / f 24 “MIR” flux density ratios (colors), we find that a subsample of galaxies demonstrate a strong IR color–color correlation within their star-forming regions, while others demonstrate uncorrelated colors. This division is driven by two main effects: (1) the local strength of star formation (SF) and (2) the metal content of the interstellar medium (ISM). Galaxies uniformly dominated by high surface densities of SF (e.g., NGC 5236) demonstrate strong IR color–color correlations, while galaxies that exhibit lower levels of SF and mixed environments (e.g., NGC 5457) demonstrate weaker or no correlation—explained by the increasing effect of varying ISM heating and metal content on the IR colors, specifically in the MIR. We find large dispersion in the SFR– L 8 (8 μ m luminosity) relation that is traced by the metallicity distributions, consistent with extant studies, highlighting its problematic use as an SFR indicator across diverse systems/samples.
Spitzer Mid-to-Far-Infrared Flux Densities of Distant Galaxies

Abstract:We study the infrared (IR) properties of high-redshift galaxies using deep Spitzer 24, 70, and 160 micron data. Our primary interest is to improve the constraints on the total IR luminosities, L(IR), of these galaxies. We combine the Spitzer data in the southern Extended Chandra Deep Field with a K-band-selected galaxy sample and photometric redshifts from the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile. We used a stacking analysis to measure the average 70 and 160 micron flux densities of 1.5 < z < 2.5 galaxies as a function of 24 micron flux density, X-ray activity, and rest-frame near-IR color. Galaxies with 1.5 < z < 2.5 and S(24)=53-250 micro-Jy have L(IR) derived from their average 24-160 micron flux densities within factors of 2-3 of those derived from the 24 micron flux densities only. However, L(IR) derived from the average 24-160 micron flux densities for galaxies with S(24) > 250 micro-Jy and 1.5 < z < 2.5 are lower than those derived using only the 24 micron flux density by factors of 2-10. Galaxies with S(24) > 250 micro-Jy have S(70)/S(24) flux ratios comparable to sources with X-ray detections or red rest-frame IR colors, suggesting that warm dust possibly heated by AGN may contribute to the high 24 micron emission. Based on the average 24-160 micron flux densities, nearly all 24 micron-selected galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 have L(IR) < 6 x 10^12 solar luminosities, which if attributed to star formation corresponds to < 1000 solar masses per year. This suggests that high redshift galaxies may have similar star formation efficiencies and feedback processes as local analogs. Objects with L(IR) > 6 x 10^12 solar luminosities are quite rare, with a surface density ~ 30 +/- 10 per sq. deg, corresponding to ~ 2 +/- 1 x 10^-6 Mpc^-3 over 1.5 < z < 2.5.

Abstract:We present UV spectra of a small sample of high redshift active galaxies: the hyperluminous, gravitationally lensed system SMM J02399-0136 (z=2.8) and three powerful radio galaxies (z~2.5). Extended continuum and emission lines are detected in all objects. The three radio galaxies present typical spectra with dominant Lya and weaker CIV1550, HeII1640 and CIII]1909. The spectrum of SMM J02399-0136 is strikingly different, showing relatively weak Lya and HeII and strong NV1240 relative to the C lines. We find that the weakness of HeII can be explained if the intermediate density narrow line region (n~10^{5-6} cm^-3 dominates the emission line spectrum, rather than the more extended low density gas (n<100 cm^-3). The line ratios of MRC2025-218 suggest that this is also the case in this object. MRC2025-218 and SMM J02399-0136 show the largest NV/HeII and NV/CIV values found in high redshift radio galaxies. The failure of solar abundance models to explain these line ratios and studies of metal abundances in high redshift quasars and radio galaxies, suggest that nitrogen is overabundant in the ionized gas of these objects. Alternative possibilities which we discuss include NV emission from the broad line region and differential amplification by a gravitational lens. We report the discovery of a PCygni profile in the CIV line in the spectrum of MRC2025-218. We detect also CII1334.5 in absorption and PCygni profiles for the lines SiIV1393.8,1402.8. We do not detect any purely photospheric stellar lines. The nature of the absorption features is not clear. It could be due to stars or an associated absorption line system.

High Redshift Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field. Color Selection and Star Formation History to z=4

Abstract:The Lyman decrement associated with the cumulative effect of HI in QSO absorption systems along the line of sight provides a distinctive feature for identifying galaxies at z>2.5. The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) observations offer the opportunity to exploit the ubiquitous effect of intergalactic absorption and obtain useful statistical constraints on the redshift distribution of galaxies considerably fainter than current spectroscopic limits. We model the HI cosmic opacity as a function of redshift, including scattering in resonant lines of the Lyman series and Lyman-continuum absorption, and use stellar population synthesis models with a wide variety of ages, metallicities, dust contents, and redshifts, to derive color selection criteria that provide a robust separation between high redshift and low redshift galaxies. From the HDF images we construct a sample of star-forming galaxies at 2<z<4.5. While none of the more than 60 objects in the HDF having known Keck/LRIS spectroscopic redshifts in the range 0<z<1.4 is found to contaminate our high-redshift sample, our color criteria are able to efficiently select the 2.6<z<3.2 galaxies identified by Steidel et al. (1996b). The ultraviolet (and blue) dropout technique opens up the possibility of investigating cosmic star and element formation in the early universe.

The Cosmic Infrared Background Radiation, Star Formation Rate, and Metallicity

Abstract:The density of the far infrared / submillimeter (FIR/SMM) diffuse extragalactic radiation field has recently been determined from COBE data. Nearly simultaneously, deep FIR/SMM surveys have detected substantial numbers of optically unidentified sources, which have led to the proposal that galaxies and protogalaxies at red shifts z = 2 to 4 may account for an appreciable fraction of the background. Here, I show that, if the reported radiation levels are generated through nucleosynthesis, most of this energy must have been produced at epochs $z \lesssim 2$. Hubble Deep Field data cited by Madau et al. (1998) indicate that the bulk of the integrated extragalactic background must have been generated even more recently at $z < 1$.

Optically faint counterparts to the ISO-FIRBACK 170 micron population: the discovery of cold, luminous galaxies at high redshift

Abstract:We present Keck spectroscopy and UKIRT near-IR imaging observations of two 170micron-selected sources from the ISO-FIRBACK survey which have faint counterparts in the optical, and r-K~5. Both sources were expected to lie at z>1 based on their far-infrared, submillimeter and radio fluxes, assuming a similar spectral energy distribution to the local ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp220. However, our spectroscopy indicates that the redshifts of these galaxies are z<1: z=0.91 for FN1-64 and z=0.45 for FN1-40. While the bolometric luminosities of both galaxies are similar to Arp220, it appears that the dust emission in these systems has a characteristic temperature of 30K much cooler than the ~50K seen in Arp220. Neither optical spectrum shows evidence of AGN activity. If these galaxies are characteristic of the optically faint FIRBACK population, then evolutionary models of the far-infrared background must include a substantial population of cold, luminous galaxies. These galaxies provide an important intermediate comparison between the local luminous IR galaxies, and the high redshift submillimeter-selected galaxies, for which there is very little information available.

Abstract:We use Herschel 70 to 160 μm images to study the size of the far-infrared emitting region in about 400 local galaxies and quasar (QSO) hosts. The sample includes normal “main-sequence” star-forming galaxies, as well as infrared luminous galaxies and Palomar-Green QSOs, with different levels and structures of star formation. Assuming Gaussian spatial distribution of the far-infrared (FIR) emission, the excellent stability of the Herschel point spread function (PSF) enables us to measure sizes well below the PSF width, by subtracting widths in quadrature. We derive scalings of FIR size and surface brightness of local galaxies with FIR luminosity, with distance from the star-forming main-sequence, and with FIR color. Luminosities LFIR~ 1011 L⊙ can be reached with a variety of structures spanning 2 dex in size. Ultraluminous LFIR≳ 1012 L⊙ galaxies far above the main-sequence inevitably have small Re,70~ 0.5 kpc FIR emitting regions with large surface brightness, and can be close to optically thick in the FIR on average over these regions. Compared to these local relations, first ALMA sizes for the dust emission regions in high redshift galaxies, measured at somewhat longer rest wavelengths, suggest larger sizes at the same IR luminosity. We report a remarkably tight relation with 0.15 dex scatter between FIR surface brightness and the ratio of [Cii] 158 μm emission and FIR emission – the so-called [Cii]-deficit is more tightly linked to surface brightness than to FIR luminosity or FIR color. Among 33 z ≤ 0.1 PG QSOs with typical LFIR/LBol,AGN ≈ 0.1, 19 have a measured 70 μm half light radius, with median Re,70 = 1.1 kpc. This is consistent with the FIR size for galaxies with similar LFIR but lacking a QSO, in accordance with a scenario where the rest FIR emission of these types of QSOs is, in most cases, due to host star formation.

Abstract:We present the spectrophotometric properties of a sample of 141 emission-line galaxies at redshifts in the range $0.2<z<1.0$ with a peak around $z\in[0.2,0.4]$. The analysis is based on medium resolution ($R\_{\mathrm{s}}=500-600$), optical spectra obtained at VLT and Keck. The targets are mostly {} "Canada-France Redshift Survey" emission-line galaxies, with the addition of field galaxies randomly selected behind lensing clusters. We complement this sample with galaxy spectra from the {} "Gemini Deep Deep Survey" public data release. We have computed absolute magnitudes of the galaxies and measured the line fluxes and equivalent widths of the main emission/absorption lines. The last two have been measured after careful subtraction of the fitted stellar continuum using the \texttt{platefit} software originally developed for the SDSS and adapted to our data. We present a careful comparison of this software with the results of manual measurements. The pipeline has also been tested on lower resolution spectra, typical of the {} "VIMOS/VLT Deep Survey" ($R\_{\mathrm{s}}=250$), by resampling our medium resolution spectra. We show that we can successfully deblend the most important strong emission lines. These data are primarily used to perform a spectral classification of the galaxies in order to distinguish star-forming galaxies from AGNs. Among the initial sample of 141 emission-line galaxies, we find 7 Seyfert 2 (narrow-line AGN), 115 star-forming galaxies and 16 {} "candidate" star-forming galaxies. Scientific analysis of these data, in terms of chemical abundances, stellar populations, etc, will be presented in subsequent papers of this serie.

High Resolution Mid-Infrared Imaging of Infrared Luminous Starburst Galaxies

Abstract:Observations for seven infrared luminous starburst galaxies are reported in the mid-infrared from 8 - 18 microns using the Keck Telescopes with spatial resolution approaching the diffraction limit. All of the galaxies observed show evidence of strong interactions based on optical morphologies. For these galaxies, a substantial fraction, usually more than 50%, of the infrared luminosity is generated in regions ranging in sizes from 100pc -- 1 Kpc. Nuclear starbursts often dominate the infrared luminosity, but this is not always true. In some galaxies, most notably NGC 6090, substantial infrared luminosity greatly in excess of the nuclear luminosity is generated in regions associated with the physical interaction between two galaxies. The radio emission is a good tracer of the location of high luminosity young stars. The visual/ultraviolet radiation output of the nearby star forming galaxies is dominated by emission from regions that are generally not producing the copious infrared luminosity of the systems. The regions of high infrared luminosity in local starburst galaxies are significantly smaller than the galaxies as a whole. The integrated spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these galaxies are very different from the SEDs of the regions of star formation. If the SEDs of star-forming regions in these galaxies reflect the SEDs found in forming galaxies at high redshift, the distant galaxies should be dominated by the mid and far-infrared luminosity output far more than the integrated luminous output of nearby starburst galaxies would suggest.
