Abstract:Quantum computing takes fully advantage of the superposition principle to increase greatly (even exponentially) the speed of calculations, relative to the classical approach. The Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm is the simplest quantum algorithm illustrating this power. Unfortunately, the standard derivation involves several ingenious steps which usually leave students feeling that they could never have figured out the algorithm by themselves. We present here a different formulation of the problem which allows students to derive the algorithm using only basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and linear algebra.

Abstract:The Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm is essentially faster than any possible deterministic classical algorithm for solving a promise problem that is in fact a symmetric partial Boolean function, named as the Deutsch-Jozsa problem. The Deutsch-Jozsa problem can be equivalently described as a partial function DJn0:{0,1}n→{0,1} defined as: DJn0(x)=1 for |x|=n/2, DJn0(x)=0 for |x|=0,n, and it is undefined for the remaining cases, where n is even, and |x| is the Hamming weight of x. The Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm needs only one query to compute DJn0 but the classical deterministic algorithm requires n2+1 queries to compute it in the worse case.In this paper, we present all symmetric partial Boolean functions with degree 1 and 2, and prove their exact quantum query complexity. Then we prove that any symmetric partial Boolean function f has exact quantum 1-query complexity if and only if f can be computed by the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. So, to an extent, the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm is universal.

Abstract:In 1985, David Deutsch challenged the Church-Turing thesis by stating that his quantum model of computation "could, in principle, be built and would have many remarkable properties not reproducible by any Turing machine". While this is thought to be true in general, there is usually no way of knowing that the corresponding classical algorithms are the best possible solutions. Here we provide an efficient classical simulation of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm, which was one of the first examples of quantum computational speed-up. Our conclusion is that the Deutsch-Jozsa quantum algorithm owes its speed-up to resources that are not necessarily quantum-mechanical, and when compared with the classical simulation offers no speed-up at all.

Abstract:We show that by a suitable choice of a time dependent Hamiltonian, Deutsch's algorithm can be implemented by an adiabatic quantum computer. We extend our analysis to the Deutsch-Jozsa problem and estimate the required running time for both global and local adiabatic evolutions.

Abstract:In the rapidly growing area of quantum information, the Deutsch algorithm is ubiquitous and, in most cases, the first one to be introduced to any student of this relatively new field of research. The reason for this historical relevance stems from the fact that, although extremely simple, the algorithm conveys all the main features of more complex quantum computations. In spite of its simplicity, the uncountable experimental realizations of the algorithm in a broad variety of physical systems are in general quite involved. The aim of this work is two-fold: to introduce the basic concepts of quantum computation for readers with just a minimum knowledge of quantum mechanics and to present a novel and entirely accessible implementation of a classical analogue of the quantum Deutsch algorithm. By employing only elementary optical devices, such as lenses and diode lasers, this experimental realization has a striking advantage over all previous implementations: it can easily be understood and reproduced in most basic undergraduate or even high-level school laboratories.

Abstract:We present a novel approach to quantum algorithms, by taking advantage of modular values, i.e., complex and unbounded quantities resulting from specific post-selected measurement scenarios. Our focus is on the problem of ascertaining whether a given function acting on a set of binary values is constant (uniformly yielding outputs of either all 0 or all 1), or balanced (a situation wherein half of the outputs are 0 and the other half are 1). Such problem can be solved by relying on the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. The proposed method, relying on the use of modular values, provides a high number of degrees of freedom for optimizing the new algorithm inspired from the Deutsch-Jozsa one. In particular, we explore meticulously the choices of the pre- and post-selected states. We eventually test the novel theoretical algorithm on a quantum computing platform. While the outcomes are currently not on par with the conventional approach, they nevertheless shed light on potential for future improvements, especially with less-optimized algorithms. We are thus confidend that the proposed proof of concept could prove its validity in bridging quantum algorithms and modular values research fields.

Abstract:We investigate the realization of a simple solid-state quantum computer by implementing the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm in a system of Josephson charge qubits. Starting from a procedure to carry out the one-qubit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm we show how the N-qubit version of the Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm can be realized. For the implementation of the three-qubit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm we study in detail a setup which allows to produce entangled states.

Abstract:We have studied the implementation of the Deutsch-Josza quantum algorithm in a superconducting charge-qubit quantum computer. Different from previous studies, we have used the inductance coupled system of You et al. The detailed pulse sequences have been designed for the four possible functions in a 2-qubit system. The result is generalized to an arbitrary n-qubit system. This scheme will be useful for practical implementation of the algorithm.

Abstract:Deutsch-Jozsa (DJ) problem is one of the most important problems demonstrating the power of quantum algorithm. DJ problem can be described as a Boolean function $f$: $\{0,1\}^n\rightarrow \{0,1\}$ with promising it is either constant or balanced, and the purpose is to determine which type it is. DJ algorithm can solve it exactly with one query. In this paper, we first discover the inherent structure of DJ problem in distributed scenario by giving a number of equivalence characterizations between $f$ being constant (balanced) and some properties of $f$'s subfunctions, and then we propose three distributed exact quantum algorithms for solving DJ problem. Our algorithms have essential acceleration over distributed classical deterministic algorithm, and can be extended to the case of multiple computing nodes. Compared with DJ algorithm, our algorithms can reduce the number of qubits and the depth of circuit implementing a single query operator. Therefore, we find that the structure of problem should be clarified for designing distributed quantum algorithm to solve it.

Abstract:It is presently shown that the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm is connected to the concept of bent function. Particularly, it is noticeable that the quantum circuit used to denote the well known quantum algorithm is by itself the quantum computer which performs the Walsh transform of a Boolean function. Consequently, the output from Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm, when the hidden function is bent, corresponds to a flat spectrum of quantum states.

Fault-Tolerant Implementation of the Deutsch-Jozsa Algorithm

Abstract:The Deutsch-Josza algorithm, one of the first and simplest quantum algorithms, is a natural candidate for small fault-tolerance experiments. We show that one can implement the Deutsch-Josza algorithm in a fault-tolerant manner using the smallest quantum error-detecting code -- the $[[4,2,2]]$ code -- without any ancillae. We implemented the algorithm on a trapped-ion quantum computer with and without fault-tolerant encoding and compared the results. With approximately $99 \%$ confidence, we found that the fault-tolerant implementation provides a noise reduction for all oracles. Averaged across all oracles, the reduction in error rate was nearly $90 \%$.

Abstract:Measurement-based quantum computing (MBQC), an alternate paradigm for formulating quantum algorithms, can lead to potentially more flexible and efficient implementations as well as to theoretical insights on the role of entanglement in a quantum algorithm. Using the graph-theoretical ZX-calculus, we describe and apply a general scheme for reformulating quantum circuits as MBQC implementations. After illustrating the method using the two-qubit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm, we derive a ZX graph-diagram that encodes a general MBQC implementation for the three-qubit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. This graph describes an 11-qubit cluster state on which single-qubit measurements are used to execute the algorithm. Particular sets of choices of the axes for the measurements can be used to implement any realization of the oracle. In addition, we derive an equivalent lattice cluster state for the algorithm.

Abstract:The Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm is experimentally demonstrated for three-qubit functions using pure coherent superpositions of Li$_{2}$ rovibrational eigenstates. The function's character, either constant or balanced, is evaluated by first imprinting the function, using a phase-shaped femtosecond pulse, on a coherent superposition of the molecular states, and then projecting the superposition onto an ionic final state, using a second femtosecond pulse at a specific time delay.

Abstract:We describe the experimental implementation of a recently proposed quantum algorithm involving quantum entanglement at the level of two qubits using NMR. The algorithm solves a generalisation of the Deutsch problem and distinguishes between even and odd functions using fewer function calls than is possible classically. The manipulation of entangled states of the two qubits is essential here, unlike the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm and the Grover's search algorithm for two bits.

Abstract:We discuss some seemingly paradoxical yet valid effects of quantum physics in information processing. Firstly, we argue that the act of “doing nothing„ on part of an entangled quantum system is a highly non-trivial operation and that it is the essential ingredient underlying the computational speedup in the known quantum algorithms. Secondly, we show that the watched pot effect of quantum measurement theory gives the following novel computational possibility: suppose that we have a quantum computer with an on/off switch, programmed ready to solve a decision problem. Then (in certain circumstances) the mere fact that the computer would have given the answer if it were run, is enough for us to learn the answer, even though the computer is in fact not run.

Abstract:We analyse the design and optimisation of quantum logic circuits suitable for the experimental demonstration of a three-qubit quantum computation prototype based on optically-controlled, solid-state quantum logic gates. In these gates, the interaction between two qubits carried by the electron-spin of donors is mediated by the optical excitation of a control particle placed in their proximity. First, we use a geometrical approach for analysing the entangling characteristics of these quantum gates. Then, using a genetic programming algorithm, we develop circuits for the refined Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm investigating different strategies for obtaining short total computational times. We test two separate approaches based on using different sets of entangling gates with the shortest possible gate computation time which, however, does not introduce leakage of quantum information to the control particles. The first set exploits fast approximations of controlled-phase gates as entangling gates, while the other one arbitrary entangling gates with a shorter gate computation time compared to the first set. We have identified circuits with consistently shorter total computation times when using controlled-phase gates.

Abstract:This article summarises measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries in decays of neutral B mesons to charmonium, open-charm and gluonic penguin-dominated charmless final states. Unless otherwise stated, these measurements are based on a sample of approximately 230 million Y(4S) to BBbar decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-factory.

Abstract:Deutsch's algorithm is the first quantum algorithm to show the advantage over the classical algorithm. Here we generalize Deutsch's problem to $n$ functions and propose a new quantum algorithm with indefinite causal order to solve this problem. The new algorithm not only reduces the number of queries to the black-box by half over the classical algorithm, but also significantly reduces the number of required quantum gates over the Deutsch's algorithm. We experimentally demonstrate the algorithm in a stable Sagnac loop interferometer with common path, which overcomes the obstacles of both phase instability and low fidelity of Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The experimental results have shown both an ultra-high and robust success probability $\sim 99.7\%$. Our work opens up a new path towards solving the practical problems with indefinite casual order quantum circuits.
