Abstract:In this proceedings I discuss the general strategy and impact of tuning Monte-Carlo event generators for physics processes involving top quarks. Special emphasis is put on disinguishing the different usages of event generators in the experiments and the subsequent implications on the tuning process. The current status of determining tune uncertainties is also discussed.

Abstract:We review the physics basis, main features and use of general-purpose Monte Carlo event generators for the simulation of proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Topics included are: the generation of hard scattering matrix elements for processes of interest, at both leading and next-to-leading QCD perturbative order; their matching to approximate treatments of higher orders based on the showering approximation; the parton and dipole shower formulations; parton distribution functions for event generators; non-perturbative aspects such as soft QCD collisions, the underlying event and diffractive processes; the string and cluster models for hadron formation; the treatment of hadron and tau decays; the inclusion of QED radiation and beyond Standard Model processes. We describe the principal features of the Ariadne, Herwig++, Pythia 8 and Sherpa generators, together with the Rivet and Professor validation and tuning tools, and discuss the physics philosophy behind the proper use of these generators and tools. This review is aimed at phenomenologists wishing to understand better how parton-level predictions are translated into hadron-level events as well as experimentalists seeking a deeper insight into the tools available for signal and background simulation at the LHC.

Abstract:We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. It ensures the consistency of physics models across a variety of experiments.

Abstract:With the full Tevatron Run II and early LHC data samples, the opportunity for furthering our understanding of the properties of the top quark has never been more promising. Although the current knowledge of the top quark comes largely from Tevatron measurements, the experiments at the LHC are poised to probe top-quark production and decay in unprecedented regimes. Although no current top quark measurements conclusively contradict predictions from the standard model, the precision of most measurements remains statistically limited. Additionally, some measurements, most notably the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark pair production, show tantalizing hints of beyond-the-Standard-Model dynamics. The top quark sample is growing rapidly at the LHC, with initial results now public. This review examines the current status of top quark measurements in the particular light of searching for evidence of new physics, either through direct searches for beyond the standard model phenomena or indirectly via precise measurements of standard model top quark properties.

On Observing Top Quark Production at the Tevatron

Abstract:A technique for separating top quark production from Standard Model background events is introduced. It is applicable to the channel in which one top quark decays semi-leptonically and its anti-quark decays hadronically into three jets, or vice versa. The method is shown to discriminate dramatically between Monte Carlo generated events with and without simulated top quarks of mass around 120 GeV and above. The simulations were performed with CDF detector characteristics incorporated, showing that the method is applicable to existing data.

Abstract:We describe an extension of the NuWro Monte Carlo neutrino event generator with the neutrino-electron scattering processes. This new dynamical channel includes the charged current and neutral current interactions, together with their interference, for $\nu_\ell e$ and $\bar\nu_\ell e$ ($\ell=e,\mu,\tau$) scatterings, resulting in ten possible final states. We illustrate the performance of the new functionality on few physical examples, including an estimation of the background in the T2K $\nu_\mu\rightarrow\nu_e$ oscillation experiment. We show that the background events arising from the neutrino-electron interactions occupy mostly a distinct region of the phase space and can be easily separated.

Abstract:We present a generator for single top quark production via flavour-changing neutral currents. The MEtop event generator allows for Next-to-Leading-Order direct top production $pp \to t$ and Leading-Order production of several other single top processes. A few packages with definite sets of dimension six operators are available. We discuss how to improve the bounds on the effective operators and how well new physics can be probed with each set of independent dimension six operators.

Abstract:We have developed a Monte Carlo generator for simulating charmonium J/psi and psi(2S) inclusive decay. In the model, charmonium decay via gluons is described by the QCD partonic theory, and the partonic hadronization is handled by the LUND model. Extended C- and G-parity conservation are assumed and abnormal suppression effects of charmonium decay are included. This model reproduces the properties of hadronic events in the charmonium inclusive decay, such as the branching ratios of hadronic resonance, the ratios of stable hadrons and the radiative products, and as the global properties of hadronic events.

Abstract:Heavy ion collisions are rich and complex systems that involve different aspects of QCD and electromagnetic phenomena. From head-on collisions to the case in which the nuclei miss each other, many of QCD and photo-induced probes are being actively investigated. In this contribution we briefly discuss both of these different topics and some of the CMS results on top quark production and vector meson photo-production, as well as the physics motivation to study these processes are presented.

Abstract:Theoretical predictions for processes involving top quarks, such as top quark-antiquark pair production, depend on fundamental standard model (SM) parameters like the top quark mass or potentially receive contributions from beyond-the-SM (BSM) physics. By comparing predictions with measurements performed at the ATLAS and CMS experiments, SM parameters can be determined precisely, or measurements can be used as a powerful probe for BSM physics. In these proceedings, recent results measuring SM and top quark properties are reported, as well as new results of searches for BSM physics for charged lepton flavor violation, flavor changing neutral currents, and baryon number violation are presented.

Abstract:We review the most recent results on top quark production at the Tevatron including the measurements of the top quark pair ($t \bar t$) production cross section, the forward-backward asymmetry, the spin correlations and the ratio of branching fractions. We also review the most recent results on the measurements on single top production cross-section and $|V_{tb}|$. Finally we will report on some recent searches for new physics in top quark production which were available at the time of the 2012 FPCP conference.

Abstract:This contribution lists challenges of Monte Carlo event generators for future lepton, especially linear colliders. A lot of the recent development benefits from the achievements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), but several aspects are unique for lepton colliders like beam simulation, polarization, electroweak higher order corrections and resummed QED corrections. We will describe the status of multi-purpose event generators and specialized codes and outline the challenges for these tools until such a collider starts data taking.

Abstract:We extend the recently presented, fully exclusive, next-to-leading-order accurate event generator for the simulation of massless neutral- and charged-current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the case of incoming neutrinos. The generator can be used to study neutrino-nucleon interactions at (ultra) high energies, and is relevant for a range of fixed-target collider experiments and large-volume neutrino detectors, investigating atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos. The matching with multi-purpose event generators such as PYTHIA 8 is performed with the POWHEG method, and accounts for parton showering and non-perturbative effects such as hadronization. This makes it possible to investigate higher-order perturbative corrections to realistic observables, such as the distribution of charged particles. To illustrate the capabilities of the code we provide predictions for several differential distributions in fixed-target collisions for neutrino energies up to 1 PeV.

Abstract:We present a new Monte Carlo generator for Direct top and Single top production via flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC). This new tool calculates the cross section and generates events with Next-to-Leading order precision for the Direct top process and Leading-Order precision for all other FCNC single top processes. A set of independent dimension six FCNC operators has been implemented - including four-fermion operators - where at least one top-quark is present in the interaction.

Abstract:We present a study of single top and single antitop quark production in the t-channel mode at the LHC pp collider at 7 TeV, 10 TeV and 14 TeV, including next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production and decay of the top quark. We discuss the effects of different O(alpha_s) contributions on the inclusive cross section and important kinematic distributions, after imposing the relevant cuts to select t-channel single top quark events.

Abstract:The top-quark mass is a parameter of paramount importance in particle physics, playing a crucial role in the electroweak precision tests and in the stability of the Standard Model vacuum. I will discuss the main strategies to extract the top-quark mass at the LHC and the interpretation of the measurements in terms of well-posed top-mass definitions, taking particular care about renormalon ambiguities, progress in Monte Carlo event generators for top physics and theoretical uncertainties.

Charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:We review the present status in the theoretical and phenomenological understanding of charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions. We start by recapitulating the basic notion of "anomalous quarkonium suppression" in heavy-ion collisions and its recent amendments involving regeneration reactions. We then survey in some detail concepts and ingredients needed for a comprehensive approach to utilize heavy quarkonia as a probe of hot and dense matter. The theoretical discussion encompasses recent lattice QCD computations of quarkonium properties in the Quark-Gluon Plasma, their interpretations using effective potential models, inelastic rate calculations and insights from analyses of electromagnetic plasmas. We illustrate the powerful techniques of thermodynamic Green functions (T-matrices) to provide a general framework for implementing microscopic properties of heavy quarkonia into a kinetic theory of suppression and regeneration reactions. The theoretical concepts are tested in applications to heavy-ion reactions at SPS, RHIC and LHC. We outline perspectives for future experiments on charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions over a large range in energy (FAIR, RHIC-II and LHC). These are expected to provide key insights into hadronic matter under extreme conditions using quarkonium observables.

Top Quark Mass Extractions from Energy Correlators: A Feasibility Study

Abstract:In a recent article, we proposed an energy correlator-based method to achieve a precision top quark mass extraction from jet substructure, using the $W$-boson mass as a standard candle. In this paper, we perform an extensive event generator simulation study of this proposal, testing both its experimental viability, as well as its sensitivity to different subprocesses in the top quark production and decay. On the experimental side, we show that uncertainties in the jet energy scale, constituent energy scale, and tracking efficiency have a minimal effect. On the theoretical side, we find that our observable isolates the perturbative decay of the top quark, while nonperturbative physics, such as the modelling of color reconnection, and underlying event, have a negligible impact on the distribution. We conclude that our proposed measurement is resilient to the experimental and theoretical aspects of the hadron collider environment, with variations in model parameters consistently leading to $\lesssim 100~$MeV shifts in the measured top mass. Our results motivate precision theoretical calculations of the energy correlator on top decays, both analytic and using parton shower generators, and further exploration of the experimental measurement.
