Abstract:Thermoelectric properties of GdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} and NdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} single crystals have been studied upon continuous doping of CoO_2 planes with either electrons or holes. The thermoelectric response and the resistivity behavior reveal a hopping character of the transport in both compounds, providing the basis for understanding the recently found remarkable divergence of the Seebeck coefficient at x=0.5. The doping dependence of the thermoelectric power evinces that the configurational entropy of charge carriers, enhanced by their spin and orbital degeneracy, plays a key role in the origin of the large thermoelectric response in these correlated oxides.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the thermoelectric properties of rare - earth barium cobalt oxides with variable oxygen content, \( \text{RBaCo}_2\text{O}_{5+x} \) (where \( R = Gd, Nd \)) at different doping levels, especially the reason for the significant divergence of its remarkable thermoelectric power factor (Seebeck coefficient) when \( x = 0.5 \). Specifically, the main research problems include: 1. **Thermoelectric response and resistivity behavior**: By continuously doping electrons or holes in the \( CoO₂ \) plane, study the thermoelectric response and resistivity behavior of these compounds to reveal the characteristics of the transport mechanism. 2. **Doping - dependence of the Seebeck coefficient**: Analyze the change of the Seebeck coefficient with the oxygen content \( x \), especially the significant divergence phenomenon at \( x = 0.5 \), and explore the physical mechanism behind it. 3. **Influence of entropy contribution**: Study the influence of the configurational entropy of carriers (enhanced by spin and orbital degeneracy) on thermoelectric properties and explain the origin of the large thermoelectric response. ### Main findings - **Hopping - transport characteristics**: The experimental results show that the transport characteristics of these two compounds exhibit hopping characteristics, indicating that carrier transport is mainly dominated by the hopping of localized electrons or holes. - **Role of configurational entropy**: The configurational entropy of carriers (especially spin and orbital degeneracy) is significantly enhanced near \( x = 0.5 \), which is the main reason for the large increase in the Seebeck coefficient. - **Similar thermoelectric properties**: Although the lattice parameters of \( GdBaCo₂O₅₊ₓ \) and \( NdBaCo₂O₅₊ₓ \) are different, their Seebeck coefficients show almost the same behavior, indicating that thermoelectric properties are mainly affected by carrier hopping - transport and configurational entropy, rather than band - structure parameters. ### Conclusion This study provides experimental evidence to support the view that spin - orbital degeneracy can significantly enhance thermoelectric properties in strongly correlated electron systems. This finding provides theoretical basis and experimental support for the development of new materials with excellent thermoelectric properties.
