Abstract:We study the creation of electron-positron pairs from the vacuum induced by a combination of a static electric field and an alternating field. We find that the overall pair production can be increased by two orders of magnitude compared to the yields associated with each field individually. We examine the interesting case where both fields are spatially localized, permitting us to examine the time evolution of the spatial density for the created particle pairs. We find that there are a variety of competing mechanisms that contribute to the total yield.

Abstract:Sauter-Schwinger pair creation in electromagnetic fields is a fundamental prediction of QED and one of the motivations for the present efforts in constructing super-strong lasers. I will give a historical review of the subject, and then focus on two recent developments. The first one is the worldline instanton formalism, a sophisticated version of the WKB approximation that makes it possible to calculate the pair creation rate for complicated field configurations. The second one is an adaptation of the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism suitable for a detailed study of the formation of real particles in time and space.

Abstract:Ultra strong electromagnetic fields can lead to spontaneous creation of single or multiple electron-positron pairs. A quantum field theoretical treatment of the pair creation process combined with numerical methods provides a description of the fermionic quantum field state, from which all observables of the multiple electron-positron pairs can be inferred. This allows to study the complex multi-particle dynamics of electron-positron pair creation in-depth, including multi-pair statistics as well as momentum distributions and spin. To illustrate the potential benefit of this approach, it is applied to the intermediate regime of pair creation between nonperturbative Schwinger pair creation and perturbative multiphoton pair creation where the creation of multi-pair states becomes nonnegligible but cascades do not yet set in. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how spin and helicity of the created electrons and positrons are affected by the polarization of the counterpropagating laser fields, which induce the creation of electron-positron pairs.

Abstract:The mechanism of pair creation in the electrosphere of compact astrophysical objects such as quark stars or neutron stars is revisited, paying attention to evaporation of electrons and acceleration of electrons and positrons, which were previously not addressed in the literature. We perform a series of numerical simulations using the Vlasov–Maxwell equations. The rate of pair creation strongly depends on electric field strength in the electrosphere. Although Pauli blocking is explicitly taken into account, we find no exponential suppression of the pair creation rate at low temperatures. The luminosity in pairs increases with temperature and it may reach up to L ± ∼ 10 52 erg s −1 , much larger than previously assumed.

Abstract:The planned generation of lasers and heavy ion colliders renews the hope to see electron-positron pair creation in strong classical fields (so called spontaneous pair creation). This adiabatic relativistic effect has however not been described in a unified manner. We discuss here the theory of adiabatic pair creation yielding the momentum distribution of scattered pairs in overcritical fields. Our conclusion about the possibility of adiabatic pair creation is different from earlier predictions for laser fields.

Abstract:The common tunneling picture of electron-positron pair creation in a strong electric field is generalized to pair creation in combined crossed electric and magnetic fields. This enhanced picture, being symmetric for electrons and positrons, is formulated in a gauge-invariant and Lorentz-invariant manner for quasistatic fields. It may be used to infer qualitative features of the pair creation process. In particular, it allows for an intuitive interpretation of how the presence of a magnetic field modifies and, in particular cases, even enhances pair creation. The creation of electrons and positrons from the vacuum may be assisted by an energetic photon, which can also be incorporated into this picture of pair creation.

Abstract:We study the creation of electron-positron pairs induced by two spatially separated electric fields that vary periodically in time. The results are based on large-scale computer simulations of the time-dependent Dirac equation in reduced spatial dimensions. When the separation of the fields is very large, the pair creation is caused by multiphoton transitions and mainly determined by the frequency of the fields. However, for small spatial separations a coherence effect can be observed that can enhance or reduce the particle yield compared to the case of two infinitely separated fields. If the travel time for a created electron or positron between both field locations becomes comparable to the period of the oscillating fields, we observe peaks in the energy spectrum which can be explained in terms of field-induced transient bound states. Abstract:The process of electron-positron pair creation and oscillation in uniform electric field is studied, taking into account Pauli exclusion principle. Generally, we find that pair creation is suppressed, hence coherent oscillations occur on longer time scales. Considering pair creation in already existing electron-positron plasma we find that the dynamics depends on pair distribution function. We considered Fermi-Dirac distribution of pairs and found that for small temperatures pair creation is suppressed, while for small chemical potentials it increases: heating leads to enhancement of pair creation.

Abstract:We solve the quantum Vlasov equation for fermions and bosons, incorporating spontaneous pair creation in the presence of back reactions and collisions. Pair creation is initiated by an external impulse field and the source term is non-Markovian. A simultaneous solution of Maxwell's equation in the presence of feedback yields an internal current and electric field that exhibit plasma oscillations with a period {tau}{sub pl}. Allowing for collisions, these oscillations are damped on a time scale {tau}{sub r} determined by the collision frequency. Plasma oscillations cannot affect the early stages of the formation of a quark-gluon plasma unless {tau}{sub r}>>{tau}{sub pl} and {tau}{sub pl}{approx}1/{lambda}{sub QCD}{approx}1 fm/c. Abstract:We study the creation of electron-positron pairs from the vacuum induced by two spatially displaced static electric fields. The strength and spatial width of each localized field is less than required for pair creation. If, however, the separation between the fields is less than the quantum-mechanical tunneling length associated with the corresponding quantum scattering system, the system produces a steady flux of electron-positron pairs. We compute the time dependence of the pair-creation probability by solving the Dirac equation numerically for various external field sequences. For the special case of two very narrow fields we provide an analytical expression for the pair-creation rate in the long-time limit.

Abstract:We revisit particle creation in strong fields, and backreaction on those fields, from an amplitudes perspective. We describe the strong field by an initial coherent state of photons which we explicitly evolve in time, thus going beyond the background field approximation, and then consider observables which quantify the effects of backreaction. We present expressions for the waveform, vacuum persistence probability, and number of produced photons at next-to-leading order, all of which are impacted by backreaction, along with the number and statistics of produced pairs. We find that converting between in-out (amplitude) and in-in (expectation value) expressions requires explicit resummation of an infinite number of disconnected loop diagrams.

Abstract:One of the fundamental predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) is the spontaneous creation of particle--antiparticle pairs from vacuum in presence of a very strong electric field. Under these extreme conditions a strongly bound state can fetch an otherwise unobservable electron from the Dirac sea, leaving behind a hole representing a positron. Although generally known for many decades, the effect has not yet been demonstrated experimentally. We propose an analogue model of the quantum Dirac field, realized by ultra--cold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice, aiming at an experimental simulation of this intriguing non--perturbative phenomenon. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effect of spontaneous pair creation in the optical analogue system, in qualitative agreement with QED: in the adiabatic regime the vacuum can be destabilized only by supercritical fields exceeding a critical threshold.

Abstract:We give here the proof that pair creation in a time dependent potentials is possible. It happens with probability one if the potential changes adiabatically in time and becomes overcritical, that is when an eigenvalue enters the upper spectral continuum. The potential may be assumed to be zero at large negative and positive times. The rigorous treatment of this effect has been lacking since the pioneering work of Beck, Steinwedel and Suessmann in 1963 and Gershtein and Zeldovich in 1970.

Abstract:We investigate the Schwinger pair production phenomena in spatially homogeneous strong electric fields. We first consider scalar QED in four-dimensions and discuss the potential ambiguity in the adiabatic order assignment for the electromagnetic potential required to fix the renormalization subtractions. We argue that this ambiguity can be solved by invoking the conformal anomaly when both electric and gravitational backgrounds are present. We also extend the adiabatic regularization method for spinor QED in two-dimensions and find consistency with the chiral anomaly. We focus on the issue of the renormalization of the electric current $\langle j^\mu \rangle$ generated by the created pairs. We illustrate how to implement the renormalization of the electric current for the Sauter pulse.

Study of Pair Production in Inhomogeneous Two-Color Electric Fields Using the Computational Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:We first demonstrate theoretically that the computational quantum field theory is equivalent to the quantum kinetic theory for pair creation in a spatially homogeneous and time-dependent electric field, then verify numerically their equivalence for pair creation in one-dimensional time-dependent electric fields, and finally investigate detailedly the effects of the field frequency, spatial width, pulse duration, and relative phase on dynamically assisted Schwinger pair production in an inhomogeneous two-color electric field. It is found that the enhancement effect of pair creation is very sensitive to the field frequency and generally very obvious for a shorter field width, a longer pulse duration, and a relative phase of maximizing the field strength. These results can provide a significant reference for the optimal control theory of pair creation which aims to maximize the created pair yield within a given scope of field parameters.

Abstract:Electron-positron pair production from vacuum is studied in combinedbackground fields, a binding electric potential well and a laser field. Theproduction process is triggered by the interactions between the bound states inthe potential well and the continuum states in the Dirac sea. By tuning thebinding potential well, the pair production can be strongly affected by thelocality of the bound states. The narrower bound states in position space aremore efficient for pair production. This is in contrast to what is commonlyexpected that the wider extended bound states have larger region to interactwith external fields and would thus create more particles. This surprise can beexplained as the more localized bound states have a much wider extension in themomentum space, which can enhance the bound-continuum interactions in thecreation process. This enhancement manifests itself in both perturbative andnon-perturbative production regimes.

Abstract:We consider electron–positron plasma in strong electric field capable of creating electron–positron pairs. The dynamics of pair creation and plasma oscillations depends on pair distribution function. Assuming Fermi–Dirac distribution we found that for small temperatures pair creation is suppressed, while for small chemical potentials it is enhanced, with respect to the case when plasma degeneracy is neglected. Astrophysical settings where such conditions may occur are discussed.

Pair creation of particles and black holes in external fields

Abstract:It is well known that massive black holes may form through the gravitational collapse of a massive astrophysical body. Less known is the fact that a black hole can be produced by the quantum process of pair creation in external fields. These black holes may have a mass much lower than their astrophysical counterparts. This mass can be of the order of Planck mass so that quantum effects may be important. This pair creation process can be investigated semiclassically using non-perturbative instanton methods, thus it may be used as a theoretical laboratory to obtain clues for a quantum gravity theory. In this work, we review briefly the history of pair creation of particles and black holes in external fields. In order to present some features of the euclidean instanton method which is used to calculate pair creation rates, we study a simple model of a scalar field and propose an effective one-loop action for a two-dimensional soliton pair creation problem. This action is built from the soliton field itself and the soliton charge is no longer treated as a topological charge but as a Noether charge. The results are also valid straightforwardly to the problem of pair creation rate of domain walls in dimensions greater than 2.

Abstract:Using a quantum kinetic equation we study the possibility that focused beams at proposed x-ray free electron laser facilities can initiate spontaneous electron-positron pair production from the QED vacuum. Under conditions reckoned achievable at planned facilities, repeated cycles of particle creation and annihilation will take place in tune with the laser frequency. The peak particle number density is insensitive to this frequency, and one can anticipate the production of a few hundred particle pairs per laser period.
