Abstract:The modeling of the elastic properties of disordered or nanoscale solids requires the foundations of the theory of elasticity to be revisited, as one explores scales at which this theory may no longer hold. The only cases for which microscopically based derivations of elasticity are documented are (nearly) uniformly strained lattices. A microscopic approach to elasticity is proposed. As a first step, microscopically exact expressions for the displacement, strain and stress fields are derived. Conditions under which linear elastic constitutive relations hold are studied theoretically and numerically. It turns out that standard continuum elasticity is not self-evident, and applies only above certain spatial scales, which depend on details of the considered system and boundary conditions. Possible relevance to granular materials is briefly discussed.

Abstract:The modeling of the elastic properties of granular or nanoscale systems requires the foundations of the theory of elasticity to be revisited, as one explores scales at which this theory may no longer hold. The only cases for which a microscopic justification of elasticity exists are (nearly) uniformly strained lattices. A microscopic theory of elasticity, as well as simulations, reveal that standard continuum elasticity applies only at sufficiently large scales (typically 100 particle diameters). Interestingly, force chains, which have been observed in experiments on granular systems, and attributed to non-elastic effects, are shown to exist in systems composed of harmonically interacting constituents. The corresponding stress field, which is a continuum mechanical (averaged) entity, exhibits no chain structures even at near-microscopic resolutions, but it does reflect macroscopic anisotropy, when present.

Microscopic density-functional approach to nonlinear elasticity theory

Abstract:Starting from a general classical model of many interacting particles we present a well defined step by step procedure to derive the continuum-mechanics equations of nonlinear elasticity theory with fluctuations which describe the macroscopic phenomena of a solid crystal. As the relevant variables we specify the coarse-grained densities of the conserved quantities and a properly defined displacement field which describes the local translations, rotations, and deformations. In order to stay within the framework of the conventional density-functional theory we first and mainly consider the isothermal case and omit the effects of heat transport and warming by friction where later we extend our theory to the general case and include these effects. We proceed in two steps. First, we apply the concept of local thermodynamic equilibrium and minimize the free energy functional under the constraints that the macroscopic relevant variables are fixed. As results we obtain the local free energy density and we derive explicit formulas for the elastic constants which are exact within the framework of density-functional theory. Second, we apply the methods of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics with projection-operator techniques. We extend the projection operators in order to include the effects of coarse-graining and the displacement field. As a result we obtain the time-evolution equations for the relevant variables with three kinds of terms on the right-hand sides: reversible, dissipative, and fluctuating terms. We find explicit formulas for the transport coefficients which are exact in the limit of continuum mechanics if the projection operators are properly defined. By construction the theory allows the diffusion of particles in terms of point defects where, however, in a normal crystal this diffusion is suppressed.

Abstract:The reversible surface stretch often emerges from the Hellman-Feynman forces exerted on the charged surfaces, leading to the change of the surface stress. A generalized surface elasticity theory is formulated, which allows one to analyze the transverse surface mechanical behavior. The involved transverse surface elastic constants are determined by an efficient method based on analyzing the process of molecular-dynamics simulation for surface elasticity. Our approach provides a framework with which the direct relation between the in-plane surface stress and the transverse surface elastic deformation is addressed in the presence of the surface charges. We also find the significant modi. cation in the elastic modulus of nanostructures due to the existence of the transverse component of surface stress and strain arisen from the surface charges. Abstract:It has been claimed that quasistatic granular materials, as well as nanoscale materials, exhibit departures from elasticity even at small loadings. It is demonstrated, using 2D and 3D models with interparticle harmonic interactions, that such departures are expected at small scales [below O(100) particle diameters], at which continuum elasticity is invalid, and vanish at large scales. The models exhibit force chains on small scales, and force and stress distributions which agree with experimental findings. Effects of anisotropy, disorder and boundary conditions are discussed as well.

Abstract:Insulin signaling involves a dynamic cascade of protein tyrosine phosphorylation and dephosphorylation. Most of our understanding of this process comes from studies focusing on tyrosine kinases, which are signal activators. Our knowledge of the role of protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTPases), signal attenuators, in regulating insulin signal transduction remains rather limited. Protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP-1B), the prototypical PTPase, is ubiquitously and abundantly expressed. Work from several laboratories, including our own, has implicated PTP-1B as a negative regulator of insulin action and as a potentially important mediator in the pathogenesis of insulin-resistance and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).

Abstract:Physical experiments can characterize the elastic response of granular materials in terms of macroscopic state-variables, namely volume (packing) fraction and stress, while the microstructure is not accessible and thus neglected. Here, by means of numerical simulations, we analyze dense, frictionless, granular assemblies with the final goal to relate the elastic moduli to the fabric state, i.e., to micro-structural averaged contact network features as contact number density and anisotropy. The particle samples are first isotropically compressed and later quasi-statically sheared under constant volume (undrained conditions). From various static, relaxed configurations at different shear strains, now infinitesimal strain steps are applied to "measure" the effective elastic response; we quantify the strain needed so that plasticity in the sample develops as soon as contact and structure rearrangements happen. Because of the anisotropy induced by shear, volumetric and deviatoric stresses and strains are cross-coupled via a single anisotropy modulus, which is proportional to the product of deviatoric fabric and bulk modulus (i.e. the isotropic fabric). Interestingly, the shear modulus of the material depends also on the actual stress state, along with the contact configuration anisotropy. Finally, a constitutive model based on incremental evolution equations for stress and fabric is introduced. By using the previously measured dependence of the stiffness tensor (elastic moduli) on the microstructure, the theory is able to predict with good agreement the evolution of pressure, shear stress and deviatoric fabric (anisotropy) for an independent undrained cyclic shear test, including the response to reversal of strain.

Abstract:We have shown in a series of recent papers that the classical theory of elasticity can be extended to the nanoscale by supplementing the equations of elasticity for the bulk material with the generalized Young-Laplace equations of surface elasticity. This review article shows how this has been done in order to capture the often unusual mechanical and physical properties of nanostructured particulate and porous materials. It begins with a description of the generalized Young-Laplace equations. It then generalizes the classical Eshelby formalism for nano-inhomogeneities; the Eshelby tensor now depends on the size of the inhomogeneity and the location of the material point in it. Then the stress concentration factor of a spherical nanovoid is calculated, as well as the strain fields in quantum dots (QDs) with multi-shell structures and in alloyed QDs induced by the mismatch in the lattice constants of the atomic species. This is followed by a generalization of the micromechanical framework for determining the effective elastic properties and effective coefficients of thermal expansion of heterogeneous solids containing nano-inhomogeneities. It is shown, for example, that the elastic constants of nanochannel-array materials with a large surface area can be made to exceed those of the nonporous matrices through pore surface modification or coating. Finally, the scaling laws governing the properties of nanostructured materials are derived. The underlying cause of the size dependence of these properties at the nanoscale is the competition between surface and bulk energies. These laws provide a yardstick for checking the accuracy of experimentally measured or numerically computed properties of nanostructured materials over a broad size range and can thus help replace repeated and exhaustive testing by one or a few tests.

Coarse-graining microscopic strains in a harmonic, two-dimensional solid and its implications for elasticity: non-local susceptibilities and non-affine noise

Abstract:In soft matter systems the local displacement field can be accessed directly by video microscopy enabling one to compute local strain fields and hence the elastic moduli using a coarse-graining procedure. We study this process for a simple triangular lattice of particles connected by harmonic springs in two-dimensions. Coarse-graining local strains obtained from particle configurations in a Monte Carlo simulation generates non-trivial, non-local strain correlations (susceptibilities), which may be understood within a generalized, Landau type elastic Hamiltonian containing up to quartic terms in strain gradients (K. Franzrahe et al., Phys. Rev. E 78, 026106 (2008)). In order to demonstrate the versatility of the analysis of these correlations and to make our calculations directly relevant for experiments on colloidal solids, we systematically study various parameters such as the choice of statistical ensemble, presence of external pressure and boundary conditions. We show that special care needs to be taken for an accurate application of our results to actual experiments, where the analyzed area is embedded within a larger system, to which it is mechanically coupled. Apart from the smooth, affine strain fields, the coarse-graining procedure also gives rise to a noise field made up of non-affine displacements. Several properties of this noise field may be rationalized for the harmonic solid using a simple "cell model" calculation. Furthermore the scaling behavior of the probability distribution of the noise field is studied and a master curve is obtained.

Abstract:Colloidal glasses (CGs) made of polymer (polymethylmethacrylate) nanoparticles are promising metamaterials for light and sound manipulation, but fabrication imperfections and fragility can limit their functionality and applications. Here, the vibrational mechanical modes of nanoparticles are probed to evaluate the nanomechanical and morphological properties of various CGs architectures. Utilizing the scanning micro-Brillouin light scattering (µ-BLS), the effective elastic constants and nanoparticles' sizes is determined as a function of position in a remote and non-destructive manner. This method is applied to CG mesostructures with different spatial distributions of their particle size and degree of order. These include CGs with single-sized systems, binary mixtures, bilayer structures, continuous gradient structures, and gradient mixtures. The microenvironments govern the local mechanical properties and highlight how the granular mesostructure can be used to develop durable functional polymer colloids. A size effect is revealed on the effective elastic constant, with the smallest particles and ordered assemblies forming robust structures, and classify the various types of mesoscale order in terms of their mechanical stiffness. The work establishes scanning µ-BLS as a tool for mapping elasticity, particle size, and local structure in complex nanostructures.
Connecting microscopic and mesoscopic mechanics in model structural glasses

Abstract:We present a novel formalism to characterize elastic heterogeneities in amorphous solids. In particular, we derive high-order strain-energy expansions for pairwise energies under athermal quasistatic dynamics. We then use the presented formalism to study the statistical properties of pairwise expansion coefficients and their link with the statistics of soft, quasilocalized modes, for a wide range of formation histories in both two- and three-dimensional systems. We further exploit the presented framework to access local yield stress maps by performing a non-linear stress-strain expansion within a cavity embedded in a frozen matrix. We show that our "bond micromechanics" compare well with the original "frozen matrix" method, with the caveat of overestimating large stress activations. We additionally show how local yield rules can be used as input for a scalar elasto-plastic model (EPM) to predict the stress response of materials ranging from ductile to brittle. Finally, we highlight some of the limits of simple mesoscale models in capturing the aging dynamics of post-yielding systems. Intriguingly, we observe subdiffusive and diffusive shearband growths for particle-based simulations and EPMs, respectively.

Abstract:We investigate linear theories of incompatible micromorphic elasticity, incompatible microstretch elasticity, incompatible micropolar elasticity and the incompatible dilatation theory of elasticity (elasticity with voids). The incompatibility conditions and Bianchi identities are derived and discussed. The Eshelby stress tensor (static energy momentum) is calculated for such inhomogeneous media with microstructure. Its divergence gives the driving forces for dislocations, disclinations, point defects and inhomogeneities which are called configurational forces.

Elastic theory of low-dimensional continua and its applications in bio- and nano-structures

Abstract:This review presents the elastic theory of low-dimensional (one- and two-dimensional) continua and its applications in bio- and nano-structures. First, the curve and surface theory, as the geometric representation of the low-dimensional continua, is briefly described through Cartan moving frame method. The elastic theory of Kirchhoff rod, Helfrich rod, bending-soften rod, fluid membrane, and solid shell is revisited. Secondly, the application and availability of the elastic theory of low-dimensional continua in bio-structures, including short DNA rings, lipid membranes, and cell membranes, are discussed. The kink stability of short DNA rings is addressed by using the theory of Kirchhoff rod, Helfrich rod, and bending-soften rod. The lipid membranes obey the theory of fluid membrane. A cell membrane is simplified as a composite shell of lipid bilayer and membrane skeleton, which is a little similar to the solid shell. It is found that the membrane skeleton enhances highly the mechanical stability of cell membranes. Thirdly, the application and availability of the elastic theory of low-dimensional continua in nano-structures, including graphene and carbon nanotubes, are discussed. A revised Lenosky lattice model is proposed based on the local density approximation. Its continuum form up to the second order terms of curvatures and strains is the same as the free energy of 2D solid shells. Several typical mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes are revisited and investigated based on this continuum form. It is possible to avoid introducing the controversial concepts, the Young's modulus and thickness of graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes, with this continuum form.

Abstract:Assemblies of purely repulsive and frictionless particles, such as emulsions or hard spheres, display very curious properties near their jamming transition, which occurs at the random close packing for mono-disperse spheres. Although such systems do not contain the long and cross-linked polymeric chains characterizing a rubber, they behave macroscopically in a similar way: the shear modulus $G$ can become infinitely smaller than the bulk modulus $B$. After reviewing recent theoretical results on the structure of such packing (in particular their coordination) I will propose an explanation for the observed scaling of the elastic moduli, and explain why the arguments both apply to soft and hard particles.

Abstract:Abstract.Recent experimental results on the static or quasistatic response of granular materials have been interpreted to suggest the inapplicability of the traditional engineering approaches, which are based on elasto-plastic models (which are elliptic in nature). Propagating (hyperbolic) or diffusive (parabolic) models have been proposed to replace the ‘old’ models. Since several recent experiments were performed on small systems, one should not really be surprised that (continuum) elasticity, a macroscopic theory, is not directly applicable, and should be replaced by a grain-scale (“microscopic”) description. Such a description concerns the interparticle forces, while a macroscopic description is given in terms of the stress field. These descriptions are related, but not equivalent, and the distinction is important in interpreting the experimental results. There are indications that at least some large scale properties of granular assemblies can be described by elasticity, although not necessarily its isotropic version. The purely repulsive interparticle forces (in non-cohesive materials) may lead to modifications of the contact network upon the application of external forces, which may strongly affect the anisotropy of the system. This effect is expected to be small (in non-isostatic systems) for small applied forces and for pre-stressed systems (in particular for disordered systems). Otherwise, it may be accounted for using a nonlinear, incrementally elastic model, with stress-history dependent elastic moduli. Although many features of the experiments may be reproduced using models of frictionless particles, results demonstrating the importance of accounting for friction are presented.
