Abstract:We have observed three clusters at z~0.7, of richness comparable to the low redshift sample of Butcher & Oemler (BO), and determined their fraction of blue galaxies. When adopting the standard error definition, two clusters have a low blue fraction for their redshifts, whereas the fraction of the third one is compatible with the expected value. A detailed analysis of previous BO-like studies that adopted different definitions of the blue fraction shows that the modified definitions are affected by contaminating signals: colour segregation in clusters affects blue fractions derived in fixed metric apertures, differential evolution of early and late type spirals potentially affects blue fractions derived with a non standard choice of the colour cut, the younger age of the Universe at high redshift affects blue fractions computed with a colour cut taken relatively to a fixed non evolving colour. Adopting these definitions we find largely varying blue fractions. This thorough analysis of the drawbacks of the different possible definitions of the blue fraction should allow future studies to perform measures in the same scale. Finally, if one adopts a more refined error analysis to deal with BO and our data, a constant blue fraction with redshift cannot be excluded, showing that the BO effect is still far from being detected beyond doubt.

An environmental Butcher-Oemler effect in intermediate redshift X-ray clusters

Abstract:We present uniform CFHT Megacam g and r photometry for 34 X-ray selected galaxy clusters drawn from the X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM) Large Scale Structure (LSS) survey and the Canadian Cluster Comparison Project (CCCP). The clusters possess well determined X-ray temperatures spanning the range 1<kT(keV)<12. In addition, the clusters occupy a relatively narrow redshift interval (0.15<z<0.41) in order to minimize any redshift dependent photometric effects. We investigate the colour bimodality of the cluster galaxy populations and compute blue fractions using criteria derived from Butcher and Oemler (1984). We identify a trend to observe increasing blue fraction versus redshift in common with numerous previous studies of cluster galaxy populations. However, in addition we identify an environmental dependence of cluster blue fraction in that cool (low mass) clusters display higher blue fractions than hotter (higher mass) clusters. Finally, we tentatively identify a small excess population of extremely blue galaxies in the coolest X-ray clusters (essentially massive groups) and note that these may be the signature of actively star bursting galaxies driven by galaxy-galaxy interactions in the group environment.

A Study on the Multicolour Evolution of Red Sequence Galaxy Populations: Insights from Hydrodynamical Simulations and Semi-Analytical Models

Abstract:By means of our own cosmological-hydrodynamical simulation and semi-analytical model we studied galaxy population properties in clusters and groups, spanning over 10 different bands from UV to NIR, and their evolution since redshift z=2. We compare our results in terms of galaxy red/blue fractions and luminous-to-faint ratio (LFR) on the Red Sequence (RS) with recent observational data reaching beyond z=1.5. Different selection criteria were tested in order to retrieve galaxies belonging to the RS: either by their quiescence degree measured from their specific SFR ("Dead Sequence"), or by their position in a colour-colour plane which is also a function of sSFR. In both cases, the colour cut and the limiting magnitude threshold were let evolving with redshift, in order to follow the natural shift of the characteristic luminosity in the LF. We find that the Butcher-Oemler effect is wavelength-dependent, with the fraction of blue galaxies increasing steeper in optical colours than in NIR. Besides, only when applying a lower limit in terms of fixed absolute magnitude, a steep BO effect can be reproduced, while the blue fraction results less evolving when selecting samples by stellar mass or an evolving magnitude limit. We then find that also the RS-LFR behaviour, highly debated in the literature, is strongly dependent on the galaxy selection function: in particular its very mild evolution recovered when measured in terms of stellar mass, is in agreement with values reported for some of the highest redshift confirmed (proto)clusters. As to differences through environments, we find that normal groups and (to a lesser extent) cluster outskirts present the highest values of both star forming fraction and LFR at low z, while fossil groups and cluster cores the lowest: this separation among groups begins after z 0.5, while earlier all group star forming properties are undistinguishable.

Abstract:Using wide-field $BVR_cI$ imaging for a sample of 16 intermediate redshift ($0.17 < z < 0.55$) galaxy clusters from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC1) Survey, we investigate the dependence of cluster galaxy populations and their evolution on environment. Galaxy photometric redshifts are estimated using an empirical photometric redshift technique and galaxy groups are identified using a modified friends-of-friends algorithm in photometric redshift <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://space.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> utilize the red galaxy fraction (\fred) to infer the evolutionary status of galaxies in clusters, using both individual galaxies and galaxies in groups. We apply the local galaxy density, \sig5, derived using the fifth nearest-neighbor distance, as a measure of local environment, and the cluster-centric radius, \rCL, as a proxy for global cluster environment. Our cluster sample exhibits a Butcher-Oemler effect in both luminosity-selected and stellar-mass-selected samples. We find that \fred depends strongly on \sig5 and \rCL, and the Butcher-Oemler effect is observed in all \sig5 and \rCL bins. However, when the cluster galaxies are separated into \rCL bins, or into group and non-group subsamples, the dependence on local galaxy density becomes much weaker. This suggests that the properties of the dark matter halo in which the galaxy resides have a dominant effect on its galaxy population and evolutionary history. We find that our data are consistent with the scenario that cluster galaxies situated in successively richer groups (i.e., more massive dark matter halos) reach a high \fred value at earlier redshifts. The Build-up of the Red Sequence in the galaxy cluster MS1054-0321 at z=0.831

Abstract:Using one of the deepest datasets available, we determine that the red sequence of the massive cluster MS1054-0321 at z=0.831 is well populated at all studied magnitudes, showing no deficit of faint (down to M^*+3.5) red galaxies: the faint end of the colour-magnitude relation is neither empty nor underpopulated. The effect is quantified by the computation of the luminosity function (LF) of red galaxies. We found a flat slope, showing that the abundance of red galaxies is similar at faint and at intermediate magnitudes. Comparison with present-day and z~0.4 LFs suggests that the slope of the LF is not changed, within the errors, between z=0.831 and z=0. Therefore, the analysis of the LF shows no evidence for a decreasing (with magnitude or redshift) number of faint red galaxies. The presence of faint red galaxies in high redshift clusters disfavours scenarios where the evolution of red galaxies is mass-dependent, because the mass dependency should differentially depauperate the red sequence, while the MS1054-0321 colour-magnitude relation is populated as in nearby clusters and as in z~0.4 clusters. The presence of abundant faint red galaxies in the high redshift cluster MS1054-0321 restricts the room for allocating descendants of Butcher-Oemler galaxies, because they should change the faint end slope of the LF of red galaxies, while instead the same faint end slopes are observed in MS1054-0321, at z~0 and at z~0.4. In the rich MS1054-0321 cluster, the colour-magnitude relation seems to be fully in place at z=0.831 and therefore red galaxies of all magnitudes were wholly assembled at higher redshift.

Abstract:Abstract It is well known from the Butcher-Oemler effect that galaxies in dense environment are mostly red with little star formation and the fraction of blue galaxies in galaxy groups/clusters also declines rapidly with redshifts. A recent work by Hashimoto et al. reported a local ‘blue cluster’ with a high fraction of blue galaxies (∼ 0.57), higher than the model predictions. They ascribed this blue cluster to the feeding of gas along a filamentary structure around the cluster. In this work we use group catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) and the state-of-art of semi-analytic model (SAM) to investigate the formation of blue clusters in the local Universe. In total, we find four blue clusters with halo mass ∼10 14 M ⊙ at 0.02 < z < 0.082, while only the one found by Hashimoto et al. is in a filamentary structure. The SAM predicts that blue clusters have later formation time and most blue satellite galaxies are recently accreted. We conclude that the formation of blue clusters is mainly governed by newly accreted blue satellites, rather than the effect of large-scale environment.

An Increasing Stellar Baryon Fraction in Bright Galaxies at High Redshift

Abstract:Recent observations have shown that the characteristic luminosity of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function does not significantly evolve at 4 < z < 7 and is approximately M*_UV ~ -21. We investigate this apparent non-evolution by examining a sample of 178 bright, M_UV < -21 galaxies at z=4 to 7, analyzing their stellar populations and host halo masses. Including deep Spitzer/IRAC imaging to constrain the rest-frame optical light, we find that M*_UV galaxies at z=4-7 have similar stellar masses of log(M/Msol)=9.6-9.9 and are thus relatively massive for these high redshifts. However, bright galaxies at z=4-7 are less massive and have younger inferred ages than similarly bright galaxies at z=2-3, even though the two populations have similar star formation rates and levels of dust attenuation. We match the abundances of these bright z=4-7 galaxies to halo mass functions from the Bolshoi Lambda-CDM simulation to estimate the halo masses. We find that the typical halo masses in ~M*_UV galaxies decrease from log(M_h/Msol)=11.9 at z=4 to log(M_h/Msol)=11.4 at z=7. Thus, although we are studying galaxies at a similar mass across multiple redshifts, these galaxies live in lower mass halos at higher redshift. The stellar baryon fraction in units of the cosmic mean Omega_b/Omega_m rises from 5.1% at z=4 to 11.7% at z=7; this evolution is significant at the ~3-sigma level. This rise does not agree with simple expectations of how galaxies grow, and implies that some effect, perhaps a diminishing efficiency of feedback, is allowing a higher fraction of available baryons to be converted into stars at high redshifts.

Oxygen Gas Abundances at z~1.4: Implications for the Chemical Evolution History of Galaxies

Abstract:The 1<z<2 redshift window hosts the peak of the star formation and metal production rates. Studies of the metal content of the star forming galaxies at these epochs are however sparse. We report VLT-ISAAC near-infrared spectroscopy for a sample of five [OII]-selected, M_B,AB<-21.5, z~1.4 galaxies, by which we measured Hbeta and [OIII]5007 emission line fluxes from J-band spectra, and Halpha line fluxes plus upper limits for [NII]6584 fluxes from H-band spectra. The z~1.4 galaxies are characterized by the high [OIII]/[OII] line ratios, low extinction and low metallicity that are typical of lower luminosity CADIS galaxies at 0.4<z<0.7, and of more luminous Lyman Break Galaxies at z~3, but not seen in CFRS galaxies at 0.4<z<0.9. This type of spectrum (e.g., high [OIII]/[OII]) is seen in progressively more luminous galaxies as the redshift increases. These spectra are caused by a combination of high ionisation parameter q and lower [O/H]. Pegase2 chemical evolution models are used to relate the observed metallicities and luminosities of z~1.4 galaxies to galaxy samples at lower and higher redshift. Not surpringsingly, we see a relationship between redshift and inferred chemical age. We suppose that the metal-enriched reservoirs of star forming gas that we are probing at intermediate redshifts are being mostly consumed to build up both the disk and the bulge components of spiral galaxies. Finally, our analysis of the metallicity-luminosity relation at 0<z<1.5 suggests that the period of rapid chemical evolution may take place progressively in lower mass systems as the universe ages. These results are consistent with a ``downsizing'' type picture in the sense that particular signatures (e.g., high [OIII]/[OII] or low [O/H]) are seen in progressively more luminous (massive) systems at higher redshifts.

Abstract:We explore the behavior of the blue galaxy fraction over the redshift range 0.75 <= z <= 1.3 in the DEEP2 Survey, both for field galaxies and for galaxies in groups. The primary aim is to determine the role that groups play in driving the evolution of galaxy colour at high z. The colour segregation observed between local group and field samples is already in place at z ~ 1: DEEP2 groups have a significantly lower blue fraction than the field. At fixed z, there is also a correlation between blue fraction and galaxy magnitude, such that brighter galaxies are more likely to be red, both in groups and in the field. In addition, there is a negative correlation between blue fraction and group richness. In terms of evolution, the blue fraction in groups and the field remains roughly constant from z=0.75 to z ~ 1, but beyond this redshift the blue fraction in groups rises rapidly with z, and the group and field blue fractions become indistinguishable at z ~ 1.3. Careful tests indicate that this effect does not arise from known systematic or selection effects. To further ensure the robustness of this result, we build on previous mock DEEP2 catalogues to develop mock catalogues that reproduce the colour-overdensity relation observed in DEEP2 and use these to test our methods. The convergence between the group and field blue fractions at z ~ 1.3 implies that DEEP2 galaxy groups only became efficient at quenching star formation at z ~ 2; this result is broadly consistent with other recent observations and with current models of galaxy evolution and hierarchical structure growth. Abstract:We present new results of a program to study the detailed morphologies of galaxies in intermediate redshift clusters and hence understand the physical origin of the enhanced star formation in these environments at earlier epochs. Deep, high resolution imagery has been obtained of 3 rich clusters, AC103,AC118 & AC114 at z=0.31, using the WFPC2 on HST. For AC103 & AC118, single pointings covering a central 0.5x0.5Mpc have been obtained; for AC114, 4 pointings covering a 1.2x0.7Mpc area have been obtained, allowing the more outer regions of a distant cluster to be studied. Hubble types plus evidence for dynamical interactions and/or structural abnormalities have been determined visually for all galaxies down to R=22.25 in AC103 & AC118 and R=23.0 in AC114.We find the numbers of spirals (Sa-Sdm) in our clusters to be up to 4x higher than that seen in present-day clusters; only in the virialised core of our most massive regular cluster, AC114, do we see morphological fractions approaching those of the present epoch. Dynamical interactions are also widespread throughout the clusters with ~20% of members showing morphological evidence of this phenomenon. The highest incidence is amongst those blue members either undergoing a starburst or seen <0.5Gyr thereafter with the majority being involved in major mergers. These galaxies, however, are of modest luminosity (L~L*+1mag), destined to become dwarfs once they fade. Cluster members with ongoing star formation typical of nearby spirals are largely late Sb-Sdm Hubble types. Galaxies whose star formation ended 1-2Gyr prior to the epoch of observation are all normal early-type (S0-Sb) disk systems. The red H-delta strong galaxies are a mixture of E & S0 galaxies, consistent with them being old dormant systems which have undergone a secondary star formation episode.

Galaxy evolution in the high redshift, colour-selected cluster RzCS 052 at z=1.02

Abstract:We present deep I and z' imaging of the colour-selected cluster RzCS 052 and study the color-magnitude relation of this cluster, its scatter, the morphological distribution on the red sequence, the luminosity and stellar mass functions of red galaxies and the cluster blue fraction. We find that the stellar populations of early type galaxies in this cluster are uniformly old and that their luminosity function does not show any sign of evolution other than the passive evolution of their stellar populations. We rule out a significant contribution from mergers in the buildup of the red sequence of RzCS 052. The cluster has a large (~30%) blue fraction and and we infer that the evolution of the blue galaxies is faster than an exponentially declining star formation model and that these objects have probably experienced starburst episodes. Mergers are unlikely to be the driver of the observed colour evolution, because of the measured constancy of the mass function, as derived from near-infrared photometry of 32 clusters, including RzCS 052, presented in a related paper. Mechanisms with clustercentric radial dependent efficiencies are disfavored as well, because of the observed constant blue fraction with clustercentric distance.

Abstract:The most extreme cluster mergers can lead to massive cluster-wide travelling shock waves. The CIZA J2242.8+5301 ('sausage') and 1RXS J0603.3+4213 (`toothbrush') clusters ($z\sim0.2$) host enormous radio-emitting shocks with simple geometry. We investigate the role of mergers and shocks in shaping the H$\alpha$ luminosity function, using custom-made narrow-band filters matching the cluster redshifts mounted on the INT. We surveyed $\sim0.28$ deg$^2$ for each cluster and found $181$ line emitters in the `sausage' (volume of $3.371\times10^3$ Mpc$^3$ for H$\alpha$ at $z=0.1945$) and $141$ in the `toothbrush' ($4.546\times10^3$ Mpc$^3$ for H$\alpha$ at $z=0.225$), out of which $49$ (`sausage') and $30$ (`toothbrush') are expected to be H$\alpha$. We build luminosity functions for the field-of-view down to an average limiting star formation rate of $0.14$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, find good agreement with field luminosity functions at $z=0.2$, but significant differences between the shapes of the luminosity functions for the two clusters. We discover extended, tens-of-kpc-wide H$\alpha$ haloes in galaxies neighbouring relics, which were possibly disrupted by the passage of the shock wave. By comparing the `sausage' cluster with blank fields and other clusters, we also uncover an order of magnitude boost (at $9\sigma$ level) in the normalisation $\phi^*$ of the luminosity function in the relic areas. Our results suggest that cluster mergers may play an important role in the evolution of cluster galaxies through shock-induced star formation.

Observational Constraints on Higher Order Clustering up to $z\simeq 1

Abstract:Constraints on the validity of the hierarchical gravitational instability theory and the evolution of biasing are presented based upon measurements of higher order clustering statistics in the Deeprange Survey, a catalog of $\sim710,000$ galaxies with $I_{AB} \le 24$ derived from a KPNO 4m CCD imaging survey of a contiguous $4^{\circ} \times 4^{\circ}$ region. We compute the 3-point and 4-point angular correlation functions using a direct estimation for the former and the counts-in-cells technique for both. The skewness $s_3$ decreases by a factor of $\simeq 3-4$ as galaxy magnitude increases over the range $17 \le I \le 22.5$ ($0.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.8$). This decrease is consistent with a small {\it increase} of the bias with increasing redshift, but not by more than a factor of 2 for the highest redshifts probed. Our results are strongly inconsistent, at about the $3.5-4 \sigma$ level, with typical cosmic string models in which the initial perturbations follow a non-Gaussian distribution - such models generally predict an opposite trend in the degree of bias as a function of redshift. We also find that the scaling relation between the 3-point and 4-point correlation functions remains approximately invariant over the above magnitude range. The simplest model that is consistent with these constraints is a universe in which an initially Gaussian perturbation spectrum evolves under the influence of gravity combined with a low level of bias between the matter and the galaxies that decreases slightly from $z \sim 0.8$ to the current epoch.

Abstract:We present a detailed study of near-IR selected galaxies in a protocluster field at z = 3.13. Protocluster galaxies are selected using the available mutliwavelength data with the photometric redshifts (photo-z) at 2.9 < z < 3.3, reaching a mass completeness of . Diverse types of galaxies have been found in the field, including normal star-forming galaxies, quiescent galaxies, and dusty star-forming galaxies. The photo-z galaxies form two large overdense structures in the field, largely overlapping with the previously identified galaxy overdensities traced by Lyα emitters (LAEs) and Lyman break galaxies, respectively. The northern overdensity consists of a large fraction of old and/or dusty galaxy populations, while the southern one is mainly composed of normal star-forming galaxies that are spatially correlated with the LAEs. This agrees with our previous study arguing the spatial offset of different galaxy overdensities may be due to halo assembly bias. Given the large end-to-end sizes of the two overdensities, one possibility is that they will form into a supercluster by the present day. We also find strong evidence that the star formation activities of the galaxies in the overdense protocluster regions are enhanced in comparison to their field counterparts, which suggests an accelerated mass assembly in this protocluster.

Abstract:We review here the interplay of cluster and galaxy evolution. As a case study, we consider the Butcher-Oemler effect and propose that it is the result of the changing rate of cluster merger events in a hierarchical universe. This case study highlights the need for new catalogs of clusters and groups that possess quantified morphologies. We present such a sample here, namely the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) C4 Catalog, which has been objectively-selected from the SDSS spectroscopic galaxy sample. We outline here the C4 algorithm and present first results based on the SDSS Early Data Release, including an X-ray luminosity-velocity dispersion (L_x-sigma) scaling relationship (as a function of cluster morphology), and the density-SFR relation of galaxies within C4 clusters (Gomez et al. 2003). We also discuss the merger of Coma and the NGC4839 group, and its effect on the galaxy populations in these systems. We finish with a brief discussion of a new sample of Hdelta-selected galaxies (i.e., k+a, post--starburst galaxies) obtained from the SDSS spectroscopic survey.

Abstract:We have carried out multicolour imaging of a complete sample of radio‐loud quasars at 0.6 < z < 1.1 and find groups or clusters of galaxies in the fields of at least eight and possibly 13 of the 21 sources. There is no evidence for an evolution in the richness of the environments of radio‐loud quasars from other low‐redshift studies to z≳ 0.9. The quasars associated with groups and clusters in our sample do not necessarily reside in the centre of the galaxy distribution, which rarely displays a spherical geometry. Clustering is preferentially associated with small or asymmetric steep‐spectrum radio sources. The quasars with the largest projected angular size are, in nearly all cases, found in non‐clustered environments. Radio‐based selection (including source size) of high‐redshift groups and clusters can be a very efficient method of detecting rich environments at these redshifts. We find that in optical searches for galaxy overdensities above z∼ 0.6, multiple filters must be used. If the single‐filter counting statistics used by groups at lower redshift are applied to our data, uncertainties are too large to make accurate quantifications of cluster richness. This means that genuine clustering of galaxies about quasars will be missed and, in ∼10 per cent of cases, putative clusters turn out to be false detections. The statistics are further diluted by the fact that galaxy overdensities are generally not centred on the quasar.

Abstract:The evolution with redshift of the temperature-luminosity relation of X-ray galaxy clusters is a key ingredient to break degeneracies in the interpretation of X-ray clusters redshift number counts. We therefore take advantage of the recent measurements of the temperature-luminosity relation of distant clusters observed with XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites to examine theoretical number counts expected for different available X-rays cluster samples, namely the RDCS, EMSS, SHARC, 160deg^2 and the MACS at redshift greater than 0.3. We derive these counts without any adjustment, using models previously normalized to the local temperature distribution function and to the high-z (z = 0.33) TDF. We find that these models having Omega_M in the range [0.85-1.] predict counts in remarkable agreement with the observed counts in the different samples. We illustrate that this conclusion is weakly sensitive to the various ingredients of the modeling. Therefore number counts provide a robust evidence of an evolving population. A realistic flat low density model (Omega_M = 0.3), normalized to the local abundance of clusters is found to overproduce cluster abundance at high redshift (above z = 0.5) by nearly an order of magnitude. This result is in conflict with the popular concordance model. The conflict could indicate a deviation from the expected scaling of the M-T relation with redshift.

Abstract:A recent observational result finds that the quenching of satellites in groups at $z=0.08$ has an angular dependence relative to the semi-major axis of the central galaxy. This observation is described as `anisotropic quenching' or `angular conformity'. In this paper I study the variation in the colour of a mass limited sample of satellite galaxies relative to their angle from the major axis of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in the CLASH clusters up to $z\sim0.5$, 4 Gyr further in lookback time. The same result is found: galaxies close to the major axis are more quenched than those along the minor axis. I also find that the star-forming galaxies tend to avoid a region +/-45 degrees from the major axis. This quenching signal is thought to be driven by AGN outflows along the minor axis, reducing the density of the intergalactic medium and thus the strength of ram pressure. Here I will discuss potential alternative mechanisms. Finally, I note that the advent of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and Euclid surveys will allow for a more detailed study of this phenomenon and its evolution.

Abstract:We present new gas kinematic observations with the OSIRIS instrument at the GTC for galaxies in the Cl1604 cluster system at z=0.9. These observations together with a collection of other cluster samples at different epochs analyzed by our group are used to study the evolution of the Tully-Fisher, velocity-size and stellar mass-angular momentum relations in dense environments over cosmic time. We use 2D and 3D spectroscopy to analyze the kinematics of our cluster galaxies and extract their maximum rotation velocities (Vmax). Our methods are consistently applied to all our cluster samples which make them ideal for an evolutionary comparison. Up to redshift one, our cluster samples show evolutionary trends compatible with previous observational results in the field and in accordance with semianalytical models and hydrodynamical simulations concerning the Tully-Fisher and velocity-size relations. However, we find a factor 3 drop in disk sizes and an average B-band luminosity enhancement of 2 mag by z=1.5. We discuss the role that different cluster-specific interactions may play in producing this observational result. In addition, we find that our intermediate-to-high redshift cluster galaxies follow parallel sequences with respect to the local specific angular momentum-stellar mass relation, although displaying lower angular momentum values in comparison with field samples at similar redshifts. This can be understood by the stronger interacting nature of dense environments with respect to the field.
