Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

Abstract:MOF-based sensors capable of effectively and stably detecting toxic species in water have attracted huge attention in terms of improving environmental monitoring levels and water quality. Combining the flexibility of structure and modifying of pore surface, a multiwalled divider installation (MWDI) strategy is proposed and used for property enhancement. We herein report three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-3 based on a C3 symmetry organic phosphonic ligand with topology increased from 3,6-connected to 3,8-connected. Among them, MOFs 1 and 2 with remaining binding sites and large pores display lower luminescence response to Co2+ than does the applying standard. Guided by the MWDI strategy, 3 with high rigid framework and triple molecular installer divided rhombic pore was achieved under top-down topological analysis as anticipated, which endows high sensitivity and rapid response to Co2+, contributed by the synergy from free activated sites and appropriate pore and molecular dividing effect. Particularly, the high stability of 3 in boiling solvent and acid/base solutions has been evidenced and explained by structural robustness and kinetic inertness. Moreover, 3 shows excellent detection ability toward trinitrophenol (TNP) over other aromatic analytes in water, attributing to the predomination of energy transfers. Of note is that the used framework can be in situ regenerated into a fresh one. That provides a promising strategy to prepare effective and economic luminescent sensors in a predictable way for property modification.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with high surface areas and abundant active sites, have been widely studied as adsorbents and catalysts in water treatments. Although some MOFs are water stable, they do not always keep their stability in water treatments, because MOFs would face threats from not only water but also the water matrix related factors, such as pH, inorganic ions, metal ions and reactive oxygen species. Thus, it is meaningful to have insight into the relationship between MOFs stability and water matrix. However, a lot of studies have reported the excellent performances of MOFs in water treatments, but few ones have deeply revealed the instability of MOFs. In addition, overestimation of MOFs stability might occur, because the commonly used judgment methods of MOFs stability have their disadvantages. Taking the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern as an example, partial loss of metal ions and ligands would not result in the obvious change in the XRD pattern of MOFs. Hence, this review pays attention to the fundamentals of MOFs stability, the chemical stability of MOFs in water treatments and judging methods of MOFs stability. Overall, this review is expected to guide a comprehensive understanding of MOFs stability in water treatments, and further help to select suitable MOFs according to the application environments.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of organic-inorganic hybrid materials that are self-assembled metal clusters and organic ligands. Because MOFs have an ultrahigh surface area, a controllable size, and adjustable chemical properties, which are not available in other porous materials, it has broad application potential in chemical sensing, gas storage, and catalysis. However, the stability of MOFs in water is poor. The presence of water molecules changes the structures and properties of MOFs, which limits their industrial application in advanced oxidation process. In this paper, the definition of water stability is introduced in detail, and the damage mechanism of water molecules on MOFs is analyzed from the perspective of thermodynamic stability and kinetic stability. According to varying factors that affect MOFs' water stability, corresponding methods to improve MOFs water stability are proposed, and research trends on the stability of MOFs in water are speculated.

Abstract:The stability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in water affects their ability to function as chemical catalysts, their capacity as adsorbents for separations in water vapor presence, and their usefulness as recyclable water harvesters. Here, we have examined water stability of four node-modified variants of the mesoporous MOF, NU-1000, namely formate-, Acac-, TFacac-, and Facac-NU-1000, comparing these with node-accessible NU-1000. These NU-1000 variants present ligands grafted to NU-1000's hexa-Zr(IV)-oxy nodes by displacing terminal aqua and hydroxo ligands. Facac-NU-1000, containing the most hydrophobic ligands, showed the greatest water stability, being able to undergo at least 20 water adsorption/desorption cycles without loss of water uptake capacity. Computational studies revealed dual salutary functions of installed Facac ligands: 1) enhancement of framework mechanical stability due to electrostatic interactions; and 2) transformation and shielding of the otherwise highly hydrophilic nodes from H-bonding interactions with free water, presumably leading to weaker channel-stressing capillary forces during water evacuation – consistent with trends in free energies of dehydration across the NU 1000 variants. Water harvesting and hydrolysis of chemical warfare agent simulants were examined to gauge the functional consequences of modification and mechanical stabilization of NU-1000 by Facac ligands. The studies revealed a harvesting capacity of ~ 1.1 L of water vapor per gram of Facac-NU-1000 per sorption cycle. They also revealed retention of catalytic MOF activity following 20 water uptake and release cycles. This study provides insights into the basis for node-ligand-engendered stabilization of wide-channel MOFs against collapse during water removal.

Abstract:Water and moisture stability have been recognized as one of the most important characteristics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in regards to their future applications. Nonetheless, most MOFs are water-labile to some degree. One promising solution for the collapse of MOFs toward water is surface hydrophobic modification. Herein, a facile, mild, and general one-step surface polymerization approach has been developed to coat the exterior surface of MOF particles with a thin polymer layer. Remarkably, the hydrophobic layer not only endows water stability of MOFs without significantly disturbing their pore features but also enables the resultant MOFs to retain high catalytic performance for diverse reactions in water. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive for promising applications but plagued by difficult recovery and deployment due to their intrinsic nano/micro powder nature. Although significant efforts have been made to develop separable solid matrixes for MOF supporting, the poor loading stability and durability of MOFs still challenge their engineering applications. Here, we present a facile and effective approach to fabricate MOF-based melamine foams (MFs) (denoted as MOFiths) with ultrahigh loading stability and operation stability, easy separation, and high-efficient performance for versatile robust applications. By adopting our approach, numbers of typical fragile MOFs characterized with wide ranges of particle size (from ∼ nm to ∼ µm) can be precisely incorporated into MFs with controllable loading ratios (up to ∼ 1,600%). Particularly, the produced MOFiths show excellent capacities for the highly effective and durable water purifications and acetalization reactions. 100% of organic pollutants can be rapidly destructed within 10 min by MOFiths initiated Fenton or catalytic ozonation processes under five successive cycles while the maximum adsorption capacity of MOFiths toward Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) reaches to 422, 222, and 105 mg·g−1, respectively. This study provides a critical solution to substantially facilitate the engineering applications of MOFs for long-term use in practice.

Abstract:Because the pollutants produced by human activities have destroyed the ecological balance of natural water environment, and caused severe impact on human life safety and environmental security. Hence the task of water environment restoration is imminent. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), structured from organic ligands and inorganic metal ions, are notable for their outstanding crystallinity, diverse structures, large surface areas, adsorption performance, and excellent component tunability. The water stability of MOFs is a key requisite for their possible actual applications in separation, catalysis, adsorption, and other water environment remediation areas because it is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the material structure during utilization. In this article, we comprehensively review state-of-the-art research progress on the promising potential of MOFs as excellent nanomaterials to remove contaminants from the water environment. Firstly, the fundamental characteristics and preparation methods of several typical water-stable MOFs include UiO, MIL, and ZIF are introduced. Then, the removal property and mechanism of heavy metal ions, radionuclide contaminants, drugs, and organic dyes by different MOFs were compared. Finally, the application prospect of MOFs in pollutant remediation prospected. In this review, the synthesis methods and application in water pollutant removal are explored, which provide ways toward the effective use of water-stable MOFs in materials design and environmental remediation.

Insights into High-Performance and Selective Elimination of Cationic Dye from Multicomponent Systems by Using Fe-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), especially Fe-MOFs, have shown prospective application in eliminating organic dyes from wastewater due to their well-developed pores, water stability, easy preparation, and economy. Herein, we synthesized four types of Fe-MOFs (such as MIL-88A, MIL-88B, MIL-100, and MIL-101) using the hydrothermal method. The products were analyzed with several methods. By comparing the adsorption effect of those four types of Fe-MOFs on three kinds of dyes, it has been shown that MIL-100 owns the best adsorption efficiency on cationic organic dyes methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) in 180 min, while all MOFs have slight removal capacity on methyl orange (MO). MIL-100, as an adsorbent, was studied under various research conditions, and the maximum removal efficiencies to MB, RhB, and MO were found to be up to 97.36%, 88.75%, and 13.00%, respectively. Furthermore, cationic dye MB's removal by MIL-100 was fitted with a pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model (<i>Q</i><sub>m</sub> = 411.041 mg/g) by adsorption kinetics and isotherms research, and MIL-100 could rapidly and selectively divide MB from a binary complex aqueous solution of MB and MO. The as-fabricated MIL-100 also exhibited excellent recyclability after four adsorption-desorption recycles and can be treated as a potential substance with high removal efficiency of cationic organic dye-containing industrial effluents.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks have remarkable advantages of high specific surface area, tunable pore structure, species diversity and superior stability causing it be a good adsorbent for methylene blue removal. Here, UiO-66 as prepared by two-step simple method at room temperature, then the effects of water on morphology, crystallinity and adsorption properties of UiO-66 were studied. UiO-66 exhibits good adsorption performance of MB with maximum adsorption amount of 543.48 mg g(-1) and good cycling stability.

Abstract:Studying the hydrolytic stability in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is essential for practical implementations. Herein, we designed a new nanoporous MOF, NU-950, with sqc topology and studied the water sorption of three polymorphs NU-901 (scu), NU-1000 (csq), and NU-950 (sqc). The work reveled the effect of topology on the water stability. Additionally, we described a facile and generalizable method to improve the water stability of the as-synthesized Zr-based MOFs using a small hydrophobic capping agent, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). The work highlighted the synergistic effect of topology and pore environment control in improving the water stability of nanoporous Zr-based MOFs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as environment functional materials have attracted increasing attentions in water decontamination and critical minerals recovery. Among MOFs, Fe-MOFs are considered as one class of optical candidates for the above applications due to their high efficiency, low cost and eco-friendly. However, it is difficult to recover powdery Fe-MOFs from aqueous system after being used, which hinders their practical applications. To address this problem, researchers devote many efforts in Fe-MOFs immobilization on macroscopic supports like porous alumina, sponge foam, gel, cotton and so on. In this review, the immobilization methods of Fe-MOFs were systematically summarized and discussed. Further, the applications of some immobilized Fe-MOFs were introduced to analyze their potential in water purification and critical minerals recovery. Finally, the prospects of immobilized Fe-MOFs in pollutants removal and critical minerals recovery from water were proposed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be a promising porous material due to their excellent porosity and chemical tailorability. However, due to the relatively weak strength of coordination bonds, the stability (e.g., water-stability) of MOFs is usually poor, which severely inhibits their practical applications. To prepare water-stable MOFs, several important strategies such as increasing the bonding strength of building units, and introducing hydrophobic units have been proposed, and many MOFs with excellent water stability have been prepared. Carbon dioxide not only causes a range of climate and health problems but also is a by-product of some important chemicals (e.g., natural gas). Due to their excellent adsorption performances, MOFs are considered as a promising adsorbent that can capture carbon dioxide efficiently and energetically, and many water-stable MOFs have been used to capture carbon dioxide in various scenarios, including flue gas decarbonization, direct air capture, and purified crude natural gas. In this review, we first introduce the design and synthesis of water-stable MOFs, then describe their applications in carbon dioxide capture, and finally provide some personal comments on the challenges facing these areas.

Abstract:Due to their large surface areas, tunable functionality, and diversiform building blocks, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have arisen great attention in the last few decades. Nevertheless, most of MOFs show poor water stability, which seriously hinders their further applications. In this study, through the immobilization of polyoxometalate in a water unstable cage-based MOF material {[(Cu4Cl)(CPT)(4)(H2O)(4)]center dot 3NO(3)center dot 5NMP center dot 3,5H(2)O) (1), in which HCPT = 4-(4-carboxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole and NMP = N-methyl pyrrolidone), via a simple one-pot solvothermal reaction, a new hybrid material ([(Cu4Cl)(CPT)(4)]center dot(HSiW12O40)center dot 31H(2)O) (2) can be fabricated. The hybrid material 2 shows a nearly identical network structure to that of 1 but possesses much higher water and chemical stability. Abstract:Water is one of essential resources of modern society. Employing cost-effective technologies to treat water and wastewater is of vital importance for household uses, industries and the environment. Water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising innovative materials for water treatment, due to their versatility and properties such as large internal surface area, designable pore sizes, and chemical functionalities. In highly porous MOFs, metal center(s)/cluster(s) and organic ligands are linked with coordination bonds. This review paper presents the most recent developments in the industrial-scale synthesis of MOFs and applications in water purification. MOFs can be fabricated by several approaches; the microwave assisted continuous flow synthesis technologies can lead to higher production yields. The fabricated MOFs are then purified by the organic solvent and/or the solid separation, and activated by a few technologies (e.g., supercritical CO2). Process safety in production, reactors design, and process optimization are important in production. The shaping techniques for MOFs on supporting materials via surface grafting/coating or embedment can be used to fabricate the MOFs-based materials with the better stability suitable for industrial applications. MOFs demonstrate much better performances than the commercially available materials in adsorption, filtration, sensing, and catalysis. Toxicity from MOFs is mainly due to the chemicals involved in the production and nano-size effects on human cells. Mitigation strategies like environmental-friendly processes for fabrication of MOFs and shaping using polymer are suggested. Various advantages from MOFs make them suitable for water treatment in the near future.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF) materials in general, and MOF-74 in particular, have promising properties for many technologically important processes. However, their instability under humid conditions severely restricts practical use. We show that this instability and the accompanying reduction of the CO$_2$ uptake capacity of MOF-74 under humid conditions originate in the water dissociation reaction H$_2$O$\rightarrow$OH+H at the metal centers. After this dissociation, the OH groups coordinate to the metal centers, explaining the reduction in the MOF's CO$_2$ uptake capacity. This reduction thus strongly depends on the catalytic activity of MOF-74 towards the water dissociation reaction. We further show that-while the water molecules themselves only have a negligible effect on the crystal structure of MOF-74-the OH and H products of the dissociation reaction significantly weaken the MOF framework and lead to the observed crystal structure breakdown. With this knowledge, we propose a way to suppress this particular reaction by modifying the MOF-74 structure to increase the water dissociation energy barrier and thus control the stability of the system under humid conditions.

Abstract:Ion exchange adsorption has demonstrated great promise for the removal of toxic ion contaminants from wastewater. Here, by combining in situ polymerization and quaternization , we successfully fabricated a series of poly(ionic liquids)/aluminum-based metal-organic framework composites, DUT-5-(X)I. The optimized DUT-5-(60)I possesses relatively large surface area and abundant exchangeable free iodide ions, which endow this composite with highly efficient adsorption of anionic pollutants. Specifically, over 90% of permanganate, methyl blue and methyl orange can be removed within 10 min. In addition, effects of pH and coexisting ions on the removal of adsorbates were examined. Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model can well describe the adsorption results. The Langmuir isotherm model based maximum adsorption capacities of DUT-5-(60)I for permanganate, methyl blue, and methyl orange reached up to 1132, 1548, and 1474 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption mechanism studies suggest that the removal of these adsorbates was mainly controlled by electrostatic adsorption. This study will provide new insights for the development of MOF-based materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract:This study integrates machine learning with experimental validation, aiming to accelerate the discovery of water stable metal−organic frameworks. The developed machine learning approach demonstrates high accuracy, streamlined scalability, and robust prediction capability toward important water related applications. Metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) provide an extensive design landscape for nanoporous materials that drive innovation across energy and environmental fields. However, their practical applications are often hindered by water stability challenges. In this study, a machine learning (ML) approach is proposed to accelerate the discovery of water stable MOFs and validated through experimental test. First, the largest database currently available that contains water stability information of 1133 synthesized MOFs is constructed and categorized according to experimental stability. Then, structural and chemical descriptors are applied at various fragmental levels to develop ML classifiers for predicting the water stability of MOFs. The ML classifiers achieve high prediction accuracy and excellent transferability on out‐of‐sample validation. Next, two MOFs are experimentally synthesized with their water stability tested to validate ML predictions. Finally, the ML classifiers are applied to discover water stable MOFs in the ab initio REPEAT charge MOF (ARC−MOF) database. Among ≈280 000 candidates, ≈130 000 (47%) MOFs are predicted to be water stable; furthermore, through multi‐stability analysis, 461 (0.16%) MOFs are identified as not only water stable but also thermal and activation stable. The ML approach is anticipated to serve as a prerequisite filtering tool to streamline the exploration of water stable MOFs for important practical applications.
