Abstract:Abstract Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) algorithm is a widely used wireless network-based localization algorithm. However, with the increasing complexity of real-life localization environments, the disturbances of noise, perturbations and multi-path effect have limited the performance of the classical TDOA algorithm. In view of these, we design an Interaction-derived Sequence Selection (IDSS) method and an Interaction-derived Sequence Adjustment (IDSA) method to reduce localization error caused by Non Line of Sight (NLOS) environments. Furthermore, an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) framework is proposed to deal with the localization problem in complex mixed environments. Experimental results demonstrate that the IDSS and IDSA methods can enhance TDOA localization performance in NLOS environments, and the IMM framework can maintain strong adaptability in complex mixed environments.

Abstract:According to the time synchronization property of time division multiple access(TDMA) system,three location algorithms are proposed based on the measurements of time of arrival(TOA) of TDMA moving target.The method of target motion analysis(TMA) is used to analyse the observability condition of target position and realize the TMA time difference of arrival(TDOA) location(TDOA-M for short).Other two joint algorithms of conventional TDOA location(TDOA-C) and TDOA-M with TMA ranging algorithm are presented.The proposed algorithms make full use of the target motion property to improve location precision and avoid the phenomenon of multiple solutions and no solution.The simulation results illustrate the validity of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:In a precision positioning system, one important source of positioning error is the clock synchronization problem, which is caused by multiple base stations. Therefore, eliminating the clock synchronization problem in a no-line-of-sight (NLOS) environment plays an important role in reducing errors in a positioning system. To address this problem, this study designs a practical experimental environment and proposes the concepts of Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and non-line-of-sight-Time Difference of Arrival (N-TDOA). First, the improved TDOA algorithm is used to determine the tag’s position; second, the tag’s trajectory is drawn at different times; then, a map of the monitored area is loaded, and the tag trajectory is displayed in the actual experimental environment. The experimental results show that the N-TDOA algorithm synchronizes the base stations at the algorithmic layer; thus, deploying network cables or wires to achieve clock synchronization is unnecessary: wireless deployment can be used. In an NLOS environment, the N-TDOA method significantly improves the positioning accuracy compared with that of other algorithms, which facilitates further trajectory tracking research. Overall, the proposed approach improves both the accuracy and stability of trajectory tracking.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the problem of source localization using time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measurements in both 2-D and 3-D spaces. Different from existing studies where the variance of TDOA measurement noises is assumed to be independent of the associated source-to-sensor distances, we consider the more realistic model where the variance is a function of the source-to-sensor distances, which dramatically complicates TDOA-based source localization. After formulating the distance-dependent noise model, we prove that using the extra information about the source location in the functional variance improves the estimation accuracy of TDOA-based source localization, but contributes little under a sufficiently small noise level. Further, we theoretically analyze the problem of optimal sensor placement, and derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for optimizing localization performance under different circumstances. Then, a localization scheme based on the iteratively reweighted generalized least squares (IRGLS) method is proposed to efficiently exploit the extra source location information. Finally, a simulation analysis confirms our theoretical studies, and shows that the performance of the proposed localization scheme is comparable to the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) given moderate TDOA measurement noises.

Abstract:To address the inaccuracy of the Constant Acceleration/Constant Velocity (CA/CV) model as the state equation in describing the relative motion state in UAV relative navigation, an adaptive UAV relative navigation method is proposed, which is based on the UAV attitude information provided by Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS). The proposed method utilizes the AHRS output attitude parameters as the benchmark for dead reckoning and derives a relative navigation state equation with attitude error as process noise. By integrating the extended Kalman filter output for relative state estimation and employing an adaptive decision rule designed using the innovation of the filter update phase, the proposed method recalculates motion states deviating from the actual motion using the Tasmanian Devil Optimization (TDO) algorithm. The simulation results show that, compared with the CA/CV model, the proposed method reduces the relative position errors by 12%, 23%, and 32% in the X, Y, and Z directions, respectively, and that it reduces the relative velocity errors by 350%, 330%, and 300%, respectively. There is a significant improvement in the relative navigation accuracy.

Abstract:This paper proposes a moving source localization method that combines TDOA, FDOA and doppler rate measurements. First, the observation equations are linearized by introducing nuisance variables and an initial solution of all the variables is acquired using the weighted least squares method. Then, the Taylor expression and gradient method is applied to eliminate the correlation between the elements in the initial solution and obtain the final estimation of the source position and velocity. The proposed method achieves CRLB derived using TDOA, FDOA and doppler rate and is much more accurate than the conventional TDOA/FDOA based method. In addition, it can avoid the rank-deficiency problem and is more robust than the conventional method. Simulations are conducted to examine the algorithm's performance and compare it with conventional TDOA/FDOA based method.

Abstract:This letter focuses on locating passively a point source in the three-dimensional (3D) space, using the hybrid measurements of time difference of arrival (TDOA) and angle of arrival (AOA) observed at two stations. We propose a simple closed-form solution method by constructing new relationships between the hybrid measurements and the unknown source position. The mean-square error (MSE) matrix of the proposed solution is derived under the small error condition. Theoretical analysis discloses that the performance of the proposed solution can attain the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for Gaussian noise over the small error region where the bias compared to variance is small to be ignored. The proposed solution can be extended directly to more than two observing stations with CRB performance maintained theoretically. Simulations validate the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:To improve the accuracy and reliability of the relative positioning for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), a relative positioning method based on multi-source information fusion is proposed. An integrated positioning scheme is constructed by the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) receivers, Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, Vision-Based Navigation System (VisNav), and Inertial Navigation System (INS). The BDS pseudorange relative difference equation, the GPS relative difference equation, the relative line-of-sight vector equation, and the INS measurement equation are established, respectively. The least squared (LS) method is used to realize information fusion, and the Gauss-Newton method is used to iteratively solve the relative position results. Finally, numerical simulation and result analysis are conducted with different sensor configurations. Simulation results show that BDS/INS/GPS/VisNav relative positioning result is obviously better than that of INS/GPS, INS/VisNav, and INS/GPS/VisNav, and the proposed method reduces the relative positioning errors and has a higher accuracy and excellent robustness. The research result is suitable for application scenarios with high navigation accuracy requirement such as AAR and intelligent swarm formation control.

Abstract:To improve precision in source localization from a time difference of arrival (TDOA) that has large measurement errors, this paper proposes a TDOA positioning algorithm based on an improved two-step constrained total least-squares algorithm; the algorithm comprise an iterative technique based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). The algorithm linearizes the obtained time difference observation equation, and by considering the influence of the TDOA measurement errors on its accuracy, it provides the optimal TDOA positioning model. It first transforms the initial unary optimization problem into a binary optimization problem by introducing intermediate variables. It then obtains a coarse estimate of the source position with ADMM. It subsequently calculates a measurement matrix through the coarse estimate and the finally uses ADMM again to find the final source position. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can approach Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) better and outperforms several existing methods when there are large TDOA measurement errors.

Abstract:Currently, the performance analysis of positioning algorithms and optimization of ground station deployment schemes are predominantly based on pure TOA or TDOA measurement information, and the relevant theoretical analysis is primarily the geometric analysis of optimal station deployment for fixed point targets, with few placement ranges and amount of station constraints. In practice, however, there are typically several measurements from TOA and TDOA stations, with a focus on positioning precision within a certain region or line trajectory, as well as the necessity for constraints on the ground station placement range. This paper proposes an efficient method for hybrid source localization using TOA and TDOA measurement information, establishes a mathematical model for hybrid source localization based on TOA and TDOA measurement information, derives and simulates the Gauss–Newton iterative localization algorithm with the least squares criterion, and performs a theoretical analysis of the least squares error and CRLB boundary to improve the accuracy of target localization in the aforementioned scenarios. Taking the average CRLB value of target line trajectory positioning error as the objective function, the ground station placement scheme of TOA- and TDOA-receiving sensors is optimized by utilizing a Genetic Algorithm with strong global optimization capability under the constraints of station placement range and station quantities, and a station placement geometry with better performance than typical station placement is obtained. Meanwhile, we summarize the general placement principles for TOA and TDOA hybrid source localization of target line trajectories.

Abstract:Booming wireless connectivity has boosted the interest of source-location in various types of network. The existing performance evaluations of source-location algorithms infrequently focus on the geometry issue, which also has considerable impact on the accuracy of source-location. This paper presents analysis and illustrations of the geometry issue for the time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) method. Several common source-location algorithms are reviewed, followed by the simulation tests of positioning performance under variants of geometry and different measurement errors. Results indicate that positioning algorithms also work under the examined cases of poor geometry, and an RMSE of below 0.3m can be achieved, which implies that the deviation of time-difference measurement error should be no greater than 33 ps.

Abstract:This paper proposes a time difference of arrival (TDOA) passive positioning sensor selection method based on tabu search to balance the relationship between the positioning accuracy of the sensor network and system consumption. First, the passive time difference positioning model, taking into account the sensor position errors, is considered. Then, an approximate closed-form constrained total least-squares (CTLS) solution and a covariance matrix of the positioning error are provided. By introducing a Boolean selection vector, the sensor selection problem is transformed into an optimization problem that minimizes the trace of the positioning error covariance matrix. Thereafter, the tabu search method is employed to solve the transformed sensor selection problem. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed sensor optimization method considerably approximates that of the exhaustive search method. Moreover, it can significantly reduce the running time and improve the timeliness of the algorithm.

Error modeling and analysis of JTIDS based on geometrical position

Abstract:The geometrical position between information sources and the user in JTIDS is important for location precision.In order to acquire the rule of error change,the positioning method was introduced for JTIDS using distance measurement from multiple known sources.Based on error theory,the geometrical position relationship between the user and sources was researched.Then an error model for JTIDS was established based on the geometrical position.The model was used to analyze the rule of error change with geometrical position.Finally the error distribution ellipse was adopted to describe the conclusion.The simulation results show that the model can reflect the characteristics of position error distribution and that the conclusion can be used for choosing sources by JTIDS receiver.

Abstract:This paper studies the location and tracking problem of the over the horizon target(OTHT).A new method is proposed,which uses active tracking technology and time difference of arrival (TDOA) location method to track the OTHT.This location system is composed of several air platforms and ground stations.The target signal is transmitted (or reflected) by air platforms and received by ground stations.TDOA information is measured by ground stations.At the same time the position of air platform is located by active radar in ground station.Then the time of target signal propagated between air platform and ground station is obtained.By simple calculation we can obtain the TDOA information of these air platforms,which is used to locate the OTHT.Simulation results show that the OTHT can be located and tracked by the method proposed.

Abstract:As the battle environment becomes more complicated, the demand for higher accuracy and better anti-jam capacity of navigation has been increasing. The conventional JTIDS/INS/GPS integrated navigation cannot meet the demands of certain situations such as precision strike and formation flight. A new system that introduces the differential GPS into JTIDS/INS/GPS integration system is proposed to improve the navigation performance in the modern combined operations. In this system, the differential information of DGPS is transmitted through the communication data link of Link-16. As a result, the system resources are efficiently utilized and the controllability and anti-jam performance of the system are significantly enhanced. A hybrid slot allocation protocol (HSAP) that combines a static slot allocation algorithm and a dynamic slot allocation algorithm and the corresponding source-chosen mechanisms are proposed. The performance of the JTIDS/INS/GPS integration navigation using the differential GPS information from one or multiple base stations is studied and compared with that of the system without using the differential GPS information. Furthermore, the performance of the integration navigation using HSAP is compared with that of the system using static slot allocation algorithm. We show that navigation accuracy based on the differential GPS is improved, and using HSAP also leads to higher localization accuracy.

Abstract:When DTWR is applied to ranging between two movement nodes,such as aircraft bodies,the ranging precision will be impaired,rendering it unable to meet the needs of accurate positioning because of the relative motion between nodes.To eliminating the effect of the relative motion on ranging and positioning,the ranging error between aircraft based on DTWR was analyzed and modeled first.Then,the constraint equation between the ranging error and the relative state of aircraft was established.Based on the constraint and the Lagrangian multiplier and Taylor-series algorithm,the least squared estimation of the relative coordinates of two aircraft can be acquired.The method presented extended the application of DTWR and achieved the accurate position between aircraft.The simulation results have shown the good performance of the method in location accuracy and computation stability.

Abstract:With the increase in satellite communication interference, the tri-satellite time difference of arrival (TDOA) localization technique, which is an effective method to determine the location of the interference using sensors or antennas, has been developed rapidly. The location of the interference source is determined through the intersection of the TDOA lines of position (LOP). However, when the two TDOA LOP have two mirrored intersection points, it is theoretically difficult to determine the real location. Aiming at this problem, a method for eliminating mirrored location based on multiple moment TDOA is proposed in this paper. First, the TDOA results are measured at multiple moments using the cross-ambiguity function (CAF), and the localization equation set is established based on the World Geodetic System (WGS)-84 earth ellipsoid model. Then, the initial location result can be obtained by solving the equation set through the Newton iteration method. Finally, the high-precision location result after eliminating the mirrored location is obtained after the single moment localization based on the initial location. Simulation experiments and real measured data processing results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. It still has good robustness under the condition of large measurement errors and deviations from the prior initial values.

Abstract:In the TDOA location system,the constellation drift can affect the location precision. Aiming at this problem, based on the analysis of the three satellites constellation drifting in a period of time, we proposed the location precision results of constellation drift influence in TDOA location system. Considering the constraint of location accuracy and satellite resources, a feasible recommendation for location maintenance of three satellites system is put forward, which provides the theoretical support for the location maintenance strategy of three satellites TDOA location.
