Abstract:Photocatalysis has the advantages of practical, sustainable and environmental protection, so it plays a significant role in energy transformation and environmental utilization. CeO2 has attracted widespread attention for its unique 4 f electrons, rich defect structures, high oxygen storage capacity and great chemical stability. In this paper, we review the structure of CeO2 and the common methods for the preparation of CeO2-based composites in the first part. In particular, we highlight the co-precipitation method, template method, and sol-gel method methods. Then, in the second part, we introduce the application of CeO2-based composites in photocatalysis, including photocatalytic CO2 reduction, hydrogen production, degradation, selective organic reaction, and photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. In addition, we discuss several modification techniques to improve the photocatalytic performance of CeO2-based composites, such as elemental doping, defect engineering, constructing heterojunction and morphology regulation. Finally, the challenges faced by CeO2-based composites are analyzed and their development prospects are prospected. This review provides a systematic summary of the recent advance of CeO2-based composites in the field of photocatalysis, which can provide useful references for the rational design of efficient CeO2-based composite photocatalysts for sustainable development.

Abstract:Photocatalysis, as an inexpensive and safe technology to convert solar energy, is essential for the efficient utilization of sustainable renewable energy sources. Earth-abundant cobalt sulfide-based composites have generated great interest in the field of solar fuel conversion because of their cheap, diverse structures and facile preparation. Over the past 10 years, the number of reports on cobalt sulfide-based photocatalysts has increased year by year, and more than 500 publications on the application of cobalt sulfide groups in photocatalysis can be found in the last three years. In this review, we initially summarize the four common strategies for preparing cobalt sulfide-based composite materials. Then, the multiple roles of cobalt sulfide-based cocatalysts in photocatalysis have been discussed. After that, we present the latest progress of cobalt sulfide in four fields of photocatalysis application, including photocatalytic hydrogen production, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen fixation, and photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Finally, the development prospects and challenges of cobalt sulfide-based photocatalysts are discussed. This review is expected to provide useful reference for the construction of high-performance cobalt sulfide-based composite photocatalytic materials for sustainable solar-chemical energy conversion.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a green chemical process that could partly solve energy and pollution issues. Catalysts such as cobalt titanate, CoTiO 3 , have intrigued scientists due to a visible light-responsive band gap of about 2.3 eV and a high valance band potential of about 2.35 eV that allow a remarkable oxidative activity. Nonetheless, CoTiO 3 photocatalytic activity is limited by charge recombination, thus requiring modifications. For instance, the introduction of a second semiconductor allows improved charge separation and notable enhancement of the activity. Here we review interfacial engineering of CoTiO 3 by introduction of a second semiconductor. We describe the synthesis and photocatalytic applications of bare and modified CoTiO 3 . Modified CoTiO 3 composites are categorized into Type-I, Type-II, Z-scheme, and S-scheme heterojunctions, depending on the band structures of the composite.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is an advanced technique that transforms solar energy into sustainable fuels and oxidizes pollutants via the aid of semiconductor photocatalysts. The main scientific and technological challenges for effective photocatalysis are the stability, robustness, and efficiency of semiconductor photocatalysts. For practical applications, researchers are trying to develop highly efficient and stable photocatalysts. Since the literature is highly scattered, it is urgent to write a critical review that summarizes the state-of-the-art progress in the design of a variety of semiconductor composite photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications. Herein, a comprehensive review is presented that summarizes an overview, history, mechanism, advantages, and challenges of semiconductor photocatalysis. Further, the recent advancements in the design of heterostructure photocatalysts including alloy quantum dots based composites, carbon based composites including carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, graphitic carbon nitride, and graphene, covalent-organic frameworks based composites, metal based composites including metal carbides, metal halide perovskites, metal nitrides, metal oxides, metal phosphides, and metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks based composites, plasmonic materials based composites and single atom based composites for CO2 conversion, H2 evolution, and pollutants oxidation are discussed elaborately. Finally, perspectives for further improvement in the design of composite materials for efficient photocatalysis are provided.

Abstract:WO 3 -based photocatalysis has garnered significant interest among researchers worldwide. With a band gap ranging between 2.5 and 2.7 eV, WO 3 emerges as a promising candidate material for photocatalytic applications due to its excellent electrochemical properties, high stability, and ability to enhance photoactivity in various crystalline forms. Noteworthy features of WO 3 include exceptional stability in harsh conditions, cost-effectiveness, high hole drift velocity, and a tunable energy gap. In this comprehensive review, we first explore the diverse morphologies of WO 3 obtained through different preparation methods. Secondly, we investigate the photocatalytic efficiency of WO 3 -based composites. Thirdly, strategies for identifying optimal photocatalysts, such as crystal plane optimization, doping, surface modification, coupling carbon materials, and hetero/homojunction fabrication, are summarized. Additionally, the integration of WO 3 -based composites to form type-II, Z-scheme, and S-scheme configurations is detailed. The review delves into various applications of WO 3 , including pollutant degradation, CO 2 reduction, and water splitting, providing an in-depth analysis. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects associated with WO 3 -based photocatalysts are highlighted, along with discussions on methods to enhance their performance. This review aims to inspire academics to innovate concepts for advancing sustainable energy production in the next generation.

Abstract:Photocatalysis, via conversion of light into valuable chemicals, is an economic and effective way to utilize inexhaustible solar energy for the sustainable development of our human society. Aiming at killing two birds with one stone, metal nanoparticle (MNP)/metal-organic framework (MOF) composites via integration of the individual advantages of MNP and MOF have been becoming a versatile photocatalyst. Moreover, owing to the synergist effect between each component, MNP/MOF composite photocatalysts usually show greatly promoted catalytic activity, selectivity and long-term recyclability. In this review, first of all, the widely adopted synthesis strategies of MNP/MOF composite are introduced comprehensively, and then their recent advances in photocatalysis including photocatalytic hydrogen production, carbon dioxide reduction, organic transformation reactions and photodegradation of pollutants are summarized and highlighted. Finally, challenges and perspectives among MNP/MOF based photocatalysis are also proposed and discussed for advancing further development in this hot research field.

TiO2 as photocatalyst is always under the spotlight due to its unique properties like outstanding thermal/chemical stability, wide bandgap with suitable band edge, low cost, non-toxicity, and corrosion resistance. To further improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2, the versatile and porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be introduced to constructionTiO2/MOF composites, which can accomplish the enhanced light absorption performance and improved electron-hole pair separation. With this review, the fabrication strategies, characterizations techniques, photocatalytic activities and the mechanisms of some selected TiO2/MOF composites were reviewed and highlighted. The last but not the least, the outlooks and challenges of TiO2/MOF composites as photocatalysts for energy conversion and environment remediation are proposed.

Abstract:Cu is extremely cheaper and more easily recyclable than Au, Ag. Additionally, Cu nanomaterials induced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has been found to be tuned from visible to the near infrared spectrum by changing their shape and size and it provides Schottky junction when it is combined with other semiconductor material. It has many other remarkable features. For that reason, Cu based photocatalysis has become a research hotspot in view of its enormous practical applications in dye degradation, catalysis, photocatalytic H2 production, photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and other topics. Herein, we review the latest advances in copper-based photocatalysts in many fields and their improved activity due to LSPR, Schottky barier etc. The outstanding characteristics of Cu, principle of LSPR of copper combined with different nanomaterials during photocatalysis are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is considered to be a green and environment-friendly technology since it can convert solar energy into other types of chemical energies. Over the past several years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based photocatalysts have received remarkable research interest due to their unique morphology, high photocatalytic performance, good chemical stability, easy synthesis, and low cost. In this review, the synthetic strategies of developing MOFs-based photocatalysts are first introduced. Second, the recent progress in the fabrication of various types of MOFs composites photocatalysts is summarized. Third, the different applications including hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, overall water splitting, nitrogen reduction reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction as well as photodegradation of organic pollutants of MOFs-based photocatalysts are summed up. Finally, the challenges and some suggestions for the future development of MOFs- and their composites-based photocatalysts are also highlighted. It is expected that this report will help researchers to systematically devise and develop highly efficient photocatalysts based on MOFs and their composites.

Abstract:TiO2-based catalysts with various surface heterostructures (0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D) have been widely researched owing to their cost-effectiveness, high stability, and environmentally friendly nature, and can be used for many applications in various fields, including hydrogen production and pollutant degradation. However, there are also many existing problems limiting their practical application, such as their large band gap and rapid electron–hole recombination rate. Owing to the abundance of recent achievements in materials science, we will summarize the recent structural engineering strategies which provide favorable photocatalytic activity enhancements, such as enhanced visible light absorption, stability, an increased charge–carrier separation rate and improved specific surface area. Among the various structural engineering methods in this review, we will introduce TiO2-based materials with different dimensional structures. Meanwhile, we also discuss recent achievements in synthesis methods and application of TiO2-based catalysts in various fields. We aim to display a comprehensive overview which can be a guide for the development of a new generation of TiO2-based catalysts according to their structural design for enhanced solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Nanoscale metal oxide materials have been attracting much attention because of their unique size- and dimensionality-dependent physical and chemical properties as well as promising applications as key components in micro/nanoscale devices. Cupric oxide (CuO) nanostructures are of particular interest because of their interesting properties and promising applications in batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, gas sensors, bio sensors, nanofluid, catalysis, photodetectors, energetic materials, field emissions, superhydrophobic surfaces, and removal of arsenic and organic pollutants from waste water. This article presents a comprehensive review of recent synthetic methods along with associated synthesis mechanisms, characterization, fundamental properties, and promising applications of CuO nanostructures. The review begins with a description of the most common synthetic strategies, characterization, and associated synthesis mechanisms of CuO nanostructures. Then, it introduces the fundamental properties of CuO nanostructures, and the potential of these nanostructures as building blocks for future micro/nanoscale devices is discussed. Recent developments in the applications of various CuO nanostructures are also reviewed. Finally, several perspectives in terms of future research on CuO nanostructures are highlighted.

Abstract:The preparation methods of carbon/TiO_2 composite photocatalysts are reviewed. It is pointed out that composites exhibit a diversity of characteristics: carbon is not only used as a support but a coating, pore-forming agent and assisting additive. Correspondingly, carbon in the composite has the effect of concentrating the targeted pollutant and capturing intermediate products, besides which it can reduce the competitive action of water vapor with other pollutants on TiO_2, which is favorable to photodegradation. In addition, it has an advantage of suppressing the phase transformation from anatase to rutile and of preventing sintering and crystal growth in TiO_2 particles at high temperatures. Therefore, it has a beneficial effect on the practical application of photocatalysis technology for carbon/TiO_2 composite photocatalysts.

Abstract:Undoubtedly, carbon-based (nano)composites can be promising photocatalysts with improved photocatalytic activity due to the coupling effect from the incorporation of carbon species. In this mini-review, we focus on the recent development of photocatalysts based on carbon-based (nano)composites. TiO2 is well-known as a typical photocatalyst. Special attention is paid to the various types of carbon–TiO2 composites such as C-doped TiO2, N–C-doped TiO2, metal–C-doped TiO2, and other co-doped C/TiO2 composites. Various synthetic strategies including the solvothermal/hydrothermal method, sol–gel method, and template-directed method are reviewed for the preparation of carbon-based TiO2 composites. C/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) composites and ternary C-doped composites are also summarized and ascribed to the unique electronic structure of g-C3N4 and the synergistic effect of the ternary interfaces, respectively. In the end, we put forward the future perspective of the photocatalysts containing carbon species based on our knowledge.

Abstract:The unique characteristics of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent-Organic Frameworks (COFs), such as structural tunability, high specific surface area, and highly organized pores, have led to their widespread applicationin catalysis. Notably, it is possible to significantly enhance the catalytic characteristics of MOFs or COFs byelaborately integrating them togther to overcome the flaws in individual MOFs and COFs, which has been receiving more and more attention. This review starts with a brief overview of the current development of MOF/COF-based catalyst and relative synthetic approaches, followed by a comprehensive and systematic analysis of their applications in photocatalysis, thermocatalysis and electrocatalysis, involving photocatalytic water splitting, photocatalytic redox reaction and photocatalytic degradation, conventional thermocatalytic redox reaction, , as well as electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction. After the above discussion, the prospects and challenges of MOF/COF composites are also proposed.

Abstract:The shape-controlled synthesis of cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) photocatalysts with both low or high index crystal planes has received increasing attention due to their unique facet-dependent properties. Since they are cheap and earth abundant, these well-defined Cu$_2$O nanostructures are extensively used for different photocatalytic reactions, also because of their strong visible light absorption capability. However, further development will be still needed to enhance the efficiency and photostability of Cu$_2$O, which still limits its industrial application. We start this review by summarizing the synthetic advancement in the facet engineering of Cu$_2$O and other associated hybrid Cu$_2$O-based heterostructures with a special emphasis put on their growth mechanism. We then discuss different facet-dependent properties, which are relevant to photocatalysis. In the subsequent section, we present a critical discussion on the photocatalytic performance of faceted Cu$_2$O nanostructures during organic synthesis, hydrogen production, and carbon dioxide photoreduction. The relation between photocatalytic efficiency and product selectivity with exposed crystal facets or with different composition of hybrid nanostructures is also discussed. Finally, important strategies are proposed to overcome the photostability issue, while outlining the course of future development to further boost the technological readiness of well-defined Cu$_2$O-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:As a sustainable environmental governance strategy and energy conversion method, photocatalysis has considered to have great potential in this field due to its excellent optical properties and has become one of the most attractive technologies today. Among 2D materials, the emerging two-dimensional (2D) monoelemental materials mainly distributed in the -IIIA, -IVA, -VA and -VIA groups and show excellent performance in solar energy conversion due to their graphene-like 2D atomic structure and unique properties, thereby drawing increasing attention. This review briefly summarizes the preparation processes and fundamental properties of 2D single-element nanomaterials, as well as various modification strategies and adjustment mechanisms to enhance their photocatalytic properties. In particular, this article comprehensively discusses the related practical applications of 2D single-element materials in the field of photocatalysis, including photocatalytic degradation for contaminants removal, photocatalytic pathogen inactivation, photocatalytic fouling control and photocatalytic energy conversion. This review will provide some new opportunities for the rational design of other excellent photocatalysts based on 2D monoelemental materials, as well as present tremendous novel ideas for 2D monoelemental materials in other environmental conservation and energy-related applications, such as supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, solar cells, and so on.

Cu 2 O/CuO composite for efficient performance in photoelectrochemical and optoelectronics applications

Abstract:This study introduces a highly active photoelectrode, comprising a Cu2O/CuO composite, synthesized through annealing of Cu2O thin film under controlled conditions to induce partial oxidation. Through systematic investigation of annealing conditions, including temperature and duration, an optimal synthesis condition of 400°C for 1 hour was identified, resulting in superior photoelectrochemical and optoelectronic properties. It yielded the most favorable outcomes, exhibiting the largest charge carrier density of 1.09 ×1021 cm-3, lowest charge transfer resistance of 18.8 Ω, and highest photocurrent density of -2.97 mA cm-2 with stability of 81 %. This performance enhancement, which surpassed the initial photocurrent by 7 times under AM 1.5 simulated sunlight illumination at 0 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), is attributed to the formation of the Cu2O/CuO composite. This composite facilitates improved electron-hole pair separation efficiency, while the narrow bandgap of CuO enables enhanced light absorption. Additionally, the stability of the photocurrent is significantly improved by 2.3 times, attributed to the protective function of the CuO layer on Cu2O. Recent Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived Nanocomposites for Photocatalytic Applications in Energy and Environment

Abstract:Solar energy is a key sustainable energy resource, and materials with optimal properties are essential for efficient solar energy-driven applications in photocatalysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent platforms to generate different nanocomposites comprising metals, oxides, chalcogenides, phosphides, or carbides embedded in porous carbon matrix. These MOF derived nanocomposites offer symbiosis of properties like high crystallinities, inherited morphologies, controllable dimensions, and tunable textural properties. Particularly, adjustable energy band positions achieved by in situ tailored self/external doping and controllable surface functionalities make these nanocomposites promising photocatalysts. Despite some progress in this field, fundamental questions remain to be addressed to further understand the relationship between the structures, properties, and photocatalytic performance of nanocomposites. In this review, different synthesis approaches including self-template and external-template methods to produce MOF derived nanocomposites with various dimensions (0D, 1D, 2D, or 3D), morphologies, chemical compositions, energy bandgaps, and surface functionalities are comprehensively summarized and analyzed. The state-of-the-art progress in the applications of MOF derived nanocomposites in photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation, photodegradation of organic pollutants, and photocatalytic CO2 reduction are systemically reviewed. The relationships between the nanocomposite properties and their photocatalytic performance are highlighted, and the perspectives of MOF derived nanocomposites for photocatalytic applications are also discussed.
