Abstract:Discrete homotopy theory or A-homotopy theory is a combinatorial homotopy theory defined on graphs, simplicial complexes and metric spaces, reflecting information about their connectivity. The purpose of the present paper is to further understanding of the similarities between the A-homotopy and ordinary homotopy theories. More precisely, we define the notion of a mapping fiber in the category of graphs and study its basic properties, providing non-compatibility with projection.

Abstract:We give new homotopy theoretic criteria for deciding when a fibration with homotopy finite fibers admits a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. The criteria lead to a new and unexpected result about homeomorphism groups of manifolds. A tool used in the proof is a surjective splitting of the assembly map for Waldhausen's functor A(X). We also give concrete examples of fibrations having a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers but which fail to admit a compact fiber smoothing. The examples are detected by algebraic K-theory invariants. We consider a refinement of the Becker-Gottlieb transfer. We show that a version of the axioms described by Becker and Schultz uniquely determines the refined transfer for the class of fibrations admitting a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. In an appendix, we sketch a theory of characteristic classes for fibrations. The classes are primary obstructions to finding a compact fiber smoothing.

Abstract:This is a sequel to our paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2008.13462" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.13462">arXiv:2008.13462</a>, where we proposed a definition of the Morse homotopy of the moment polytope of toric manifolds. Using this as the substitute of the Fukaya category of the toric manifolds, we proved a version of homological mirror symmetry for the projective spaces and their products via Strominger-Yau-Zaslow construction of the mirror dual Landau-Ginzburg model. In this paper we go this way further and extend our previous result to the case of the Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_1$.

Abstract:In this article, we show that each two metric fibrations with a common base and a common fiber have isomorphic magnitude homology, and even more, the same magnitude homotopy type. That can be considered as a generalization of a fact proved by T. Leinster that the magnitude of a metric fibration with finitely many points is a product of those of the base and the fiber. We also show that the definition of the magnitude homotopy type due to the second and the third authors is equivalent to the geometric realization of Hepworth and Willerton's pointed simplicial set.

Diffuse radio emission in a REFLEX cluster

Abstract:Deep Very Large Array radio observations are presented for the REFLEX clusters RXCJ0437.1+0043 and RXCJ1314.4-2515. They are at similar distance and show similar X-ray luminosity, but they are quite different in X-ray structure. Indeed RXCJ0437.1+0043 is regular and relaxed, whereas RXCJ1314.4-2515 is characterized by substructure and possible merging processes. The radio images reveal no diffuse emission in RXCJ0437.1+0043, and a complex diffuse structure in RXCJ1314.4-2515. The diffuse source in the latter cluster consists of a central radio halo which extends to the West toward the cluster periphery and bends to the North to form a possible relic. Another extended source is detected in the eastern cluster peripheral region. Although there could be plausible optical identifications for this source, it might also be a relic candidate owing to its very steep spectrum. The present results confirm the tight link between diffuse cluster radio sources and cluster merger processes.

On the homotopy type of the space of fiberings of $S^1 \times S^2$ by simple closed curves

Abstract:For most aspherical Seifert-fibered 3-manifolds $M$, the space of Seifert fiberings $SF(M)$ is known to have contractible components. It is also known that the space of Hopf fiberings of the three-sphere is noncontractible. We provide the second example of a non-aspherical 3-manifold $M$ such that $SF(M)$ has noncontractible components. In particular, we show that certain components of $SF(S^1 \times S^2)$ are homotopy equivalent to a subspace homeomorphic to the identity-based loop space $\Omega SO(3)$, and we exhibit second homology generators for both connected components of $SF(S^1 \times S^2)$.

Abstract:The Quillen-McCord theorem (aka Quillen fiber lemma) gives a sufficient condition on a map between classifying spaces of posetal categories to be a homotopy equivalence. Jonathan Ariel Barmak in his paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1005.0538" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1005.0538">arXiv:1005.0538</a>] gives an elementary topological proof and proves a homological version of the theorem. Following his scheme of the proof, we formulate and prove the homological Quillen-McCord theorem, stable with respect to interleaving distances. To formulate the theorem and apply the scheme, we introduce persistence objects as objects in appropriate functor categories, describe a-la barcode decompositions of persistence posets, and prove several results, e.g. order extension principle for objects in Fun(I, Pos) and approximate triviality of left derived functors of approximately trivial objects in Fun(I, R-Mod).

Abstract:We prove a transformation formula for the Goresky-Hingston loop coproduct in string topology under homotopy equivalences of manifolds. The formula involves the trace of the Whitehead torsion of the homotopy equivalence. In particular, it implies that the loop coproduct is invariant under simple homotopy equivalences. In a sense, our results determine the Dennis trace of the simple homotopy type of a closed manifold from its framed configuration spaces of $\leq 2$ points. We also explain how the loop coproduct arises as a secondary operation in a 2-dimensional TQFT which elucidates a topological origin of the transformation formula.

Abstract:We study the cohomology of a 1-parameter family Y_t of Calabi-Yau 3-folds introduced by Aspinwall and Morrison, related to the mirror quintic family. Szendrői proved that Y_t, Y_{xi t}, ..., Y_{xi^4 t}, where xi is a fifth root of unity, have the same rational Hodge structure but are not isomorphic, and conjectured that they are not birational or even derived equivalent. We confirm this by proving that their integral Hodge structures are different, and discuss how this fits with known Torelli-type theorems and counterexamples.

Abstract:Given an irreducible closed three-manifold Y, we show that its twisted Heegaard Floer homology determines whether Y is a torus bundle over the circle. Another result we will prove is, if K is a genus-1 null-homologous knot in an L-space, and the zero surgery on K is fibered, then K itself is fibered. These two results are the missing cases of earlier results due to the second author.

Abstract:Fujino gave a proof in [Fuj03] for the semi-ampleness of the moduli part in the canonical bundle formula in the case when the general fibers are K3 surfaces or Abelian varieties. We show a similar statement when the general fibers are primitive symplectic varieties with mild singularities. This answers a question of Fujino raised in the same article. Moreover, using the structure theory of varieties with trivial first Chern class, we reduce the question of semi-ampleness in the case of families of K-trivial varieties to a question when the general fibers satisfy a slightly weaker Calabi-Yau condition.

Abstract:The authors introduce a notion of a weak graph map homotopy (they call it M -homotopy), discuss its properties and applications. They prove that the weak graph map homotopy equivalence between graphs coincides with the graph homotopy equivalence defined by Yau et al in 2001. The difference between them is that the weak graph map homotopy transformation is defined in terms of maps, while the graph homotopy transformation is defined by means of combinatorial operations. They discuss its advantages over the graph homotopy transformation. As its applications, they investigate the mapping class group of a graph and the 1-order M P -homotopy group of a pointed simple graph. Moreover, they show that the 1-order M P -homotopy group of a pointed simple graph is invariant up to the weak graph map homotopy equivalence.

Abstract:Assuming the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for the generic fiber of a Calabi-Yau fibration and the abundance conjecture, we show (1) the finiteness of minimal models, (2) the existence of a weak rational polyhedral fundamental domain under the action of birational automorphism groups, and (3) the finiteness of varieties as targets of contractions. As an application, the finiteness of minimal models and the weak Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture in relative dimensions $\leq 2$ are established.

Abstract:Given $f: M \to N$ a homotopy equivalence of compact manifolds with boundary, we use a construction of Geoghegan and Nicas to define its Reidemeister trace $[T] \in \pi_1^{st}(\mathcal{L} N, N)$. We realize the Goresky-Hingston coproduct as a map of spectra, and show that the failure of $f$ to entwine the spectral coproducts can be characterized by Chas-Sullivan multiplication with $[T]$. In particular, when $f$ is a simple homotopy equivalence, the spectral coproducts of $M$ and $N$ agree.
