Abstract:Studies that attempt to estimate the incidence of periopera-tive mortality in patients undergoing anesthesia vary substantially in their findings. A major contributor to such wide ranges may be the diversity of surgical cohorts studied. Few data are available on the rates and trends of postoperative mortality for fairly large, unselected patient populations. This populationbased study used a registry of 3.7 million surgical procedures in The Netherlands during 1991Y2005. Data were obtained from the Landelijke Medische Registratie, the Dutch national medical registry. The study included all elective, inpatient, open surgical procedures performed in patients aged 20 years or older during the 15-year period. In the Landelijke Medische Registratie, surgical procedures are grouped into 11 main categories and 36 subcategories.
