Abstract:We study the structure of ideals generated by some classes of 2 \times 2 permanents of hypermatrices. This generalizes [9] on 2 x 2 permanental ideal of generic matrices. We compare the obtained structure to that of the corresponding determinantal ideals in [Swanson-Taylor 11]: while the notion of t-switchability introduced in [11] plays a role for both permanental and determinantal ideals, the permanents require further restrictions, which in general increases the number of minimal primes. In the last two section we examine a few related classes of permanental ideals. This is an extension of the first author's senior thesis at Reed College, 2011, under the second author's supervision.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Hankel edge ideals of graphs. We determine the minimal prime ideals of the Hankel edge ideal of labeled Hamiltonian and semi-Hamiltonian graphs, and we investigate radicality, being a complete intersection, almost complete intersection and set theoretic complete intersection for such graphs. We also consider the Hankel edge ideal of trees with a natural labeling, called rooted labeling. We characterize such trees whose Hankel edge ideal is a complete intersection, and moreover, we determine those whose initial ideal with respect to the reverse lexicographic order satisfies this property.

Abstract:We describe the minimal free resolution of the ideal of $2 \times 2$ subpermanents of a $2 \times n$ generic matrix $M$. In contrast to the case of $2 \times 2$ determinants, the $2 \times 2$ permanents define an ideal which is neither prime nor Cohen-Macaulay. We combine work of Laubenbacher-Swanson on the Gröbner basis of an ideal of $2 \times 2$ permanents of a generic matrix with our previous work connecting the initial ideal of $2 \times 2$ permanents to a simplicial complex. The main technical tool is a spectral sequence arising from the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand correspondence.

Abstract:We give a criterion for a collection of polynomials to be a universal Gröbner basis for an ideal in terms of the multidegree of the closure of the corresponding affine variety in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$. This criterion can be used to give simple proofs of several existing results on universal Gröbner bases. We introduce fine Schubert polynomials, which record the multidegrees of the closures of matrix Schubert varieties in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{n^2}$. We compute the fine Schubert polynomials of permutations $w$ where the coefficients of the Schubert polynomials of $w$ and $w^{-1}$ are all either 0 or 1, and we use this to give a universal Gröbner basis for the ideal of the matrix Schubert variety of such a permutation.

Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications

Abstract:Summary Gramian matrices with respect to inner products defined for Hilbert spaces supported on bounded and unbounded intervals are represented through a bidiagonal factorization. It is proved that the considered matrices are strictly totally positive Hankel matrices and their catalecticant determinants are also calculated. Using the proposed representation, the numerical resolution of linear algebra problems with these matrices can be achieved to high relative accuracy. Numerical experiments are provided, and they illustrate the excellent results obtained when applying the theoretical results.

Permanental inequalities for totally positive matrices

Abstract:We characterize ratios of permanents of (generalized) submatrices which are bounded on the set of all totally positive matrices. This provides a permanental analog of results of Fallat, Gekhtman, and Johnson [{\em Adv.\ Appl.\ Math.} {\bf 30} no.\ 3, (2003) pp.\ 442--470] concerning ratios of matrix minors. We also extend work of Drake, Gerrish, and the first author [{\em Electron.\ J.\ Combin.,} {\bf 11} no.\ 1, (2004) Note 6] by characterizing the differences of monomials in $\mathbb{Z}[x_{1,1},x_{1,2},...,x_{n,n}]$ which evaluate positively on the set of all totally positive $n \times n$ matrices.

Abstract:An ideal in a polynomial ring encodes a system of linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients. Primary decomposition organizes the solutions to the PDE. This paper develops a novel structure theory for primary ideals in a polynomial ring. We characterize primary ideals in terms of PDE, punctual Hilbert schemes, relative Weyl algebras, and the join construction. Solving the PDE described by a primary ideal amounts to computing Noetherian operators in the sense of Ehrenpreis and Palamodov. We develop new algorithms for this task, and we present efficient implementations.

Abstract:Let I be either the ideal of maximal minors or the ideal of 2-minors of a row graded or column graded matrix of linear forms L. In two previous papers we showed that I is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal, that is, the multigraded generic initial ideal gin(I) of I is radical (and essentially independent of the term order chosen). In this paper we describe generators and prime decomposition of gin(I) in terms of data related to the linear dependences among the row or columns of the submatrices of L. In the case of 2-minors we also give a closed formula for its multigraded Hilbert series.

Abstract:We consider the polynomial ring in finitely many variables over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, and initiate the systematic study of ideals preserved by the action of the general linear group by changes of coordinates. We show that these ideals are classified by sets of carry patterns, which are finite sequences of integers introduced by Doty in the study of representation theory of the polynomial ring. We provide an algorithm to decompose an invariant ideal as a sum of carry ideals with no redundancies. Next, we study the conditions under which one carry ideal is contained in another, and completely characterize the image of the multiplication map between the space of linear forms and a subrepresentation of forms of degree d. Finally, we begin an investigation into free resolutions of these ideals. Our results are most explicit in the case of carry ideals in two variables, where we completely describe the monomial generators and syzygies using base-p expansions of the parameters involved, and we provide a formula for the structure of the Tor modules in the Grothendieck group of representations.

Abstract:The Hankel index of a real variety X is an invariant that quantifies the difference between nonnegative quadrics and sums of squares on X. In [5], the authors proved an intriguing bound on the Hankel index in terms of the Green–Lazarsfeld index, which measures the 'linearity' of the minimal free resolution of the ideal of X. In all previously known cases, this bound was tight. We provide the first class of examples where the bound is not tight; in fact, the difference between Hankel index and Green–Lazarsfeld index can be arbitrarily large. Our examples are outer projections of rational normal curves, where we identify the center of projection with a binary form F. The Green–Lazarsfeld index of the projected curve is given by the complex Waring border rank of F [16]. We show that the Hankel index is given by the almost real rank of F, which is a new notion that comes from decomposing F as a sum of powers of almost real forms. Finally, we determine the range of possible and typical almost real ranks for binary forms.

Abstract:We characterise the class of one-cogenerated Pfaffian ideals whose natural generators form a Gröbner basis with respect to any anti-diagonal term-order. We describe their initial ideals as well as the associated simplicial complexes, which turn out to be shellable and thus Cohen-Macaulay. We also provide a formula for computing their multiplicity.

Abstract:We study the class of polynomials whose Hessians evaluated at any point of a closed convex cone have Lorentzian signature. This class is a generalization to the remarkable class of Lorentzian polynomials. We prove that hyperbolic polynomials and conic stable polynomials belong to this class, and the set of polynomials with Lorentzian signature is closed. Finally, we develop a method for computing permanents of nonsingular matrices which belong to a class that includes nonsingular $k$-locally singular matrices via hyperbolic programming.

Abstract:Nakajima's graded quiver varieties naturally appear in the study of bases of cluster algebras. One particular family of these varieties, namely the bipartite determinantal varieties, can be defined for any bipartite quiver and gives a vast generalization of classical determinantal varieties with broad applications to algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and statistics. The ideals that define bipartite determinantal varieties are called bipartite determinantal ideals. We provide an elementary method of proof showing that the natural generators of a bipartite determinantal ideal form a Gröbner basis, using an S-polynomial construction method that relies on the Leibniz formula for determinants. This method is developed from an idea by Narasimhan and Caniglia--Guccione--Guccione. As applications, we study the connection between double determinantal ideals (which are bipartite determinantal ideals of a quiver with two vertices) and tensors, and provide an interpretation of these ideals within the context of algebraic statistics.

Abstract:In this article we present two new algorithms to compute the Groebner basis of an ideal that is invariant under certain permutations of the ring variables and which are both implemented in SINGULAR (cf. [DGPS12]). The first and major algorithm is most performant over finite fields whereas the second algorithm is a probabilistic modification of the modular computation of Groebner bases based on the articles by Arnold (cf. [A03]), Idrees, Pfister, Steidel (cf. [IPS11]) and Noro, Yokoyama (cf. [NY12], [Y12]). In fact, the first algorithm that mainly uses the given symmetry, improves the necessary modular calculations in positive characteristic in the second algorithm. Particularly, we could, for the first time even though probabilistic, compute the Groebner basis of the famous ideal of cyclic 9-roots (cf. [BF91]) over the rationals with SINGULAR.

Hodge ideals for the determinant hypersurface

Abstract:We determine explicitly the Hodge ideals for the determinant hypersurface as an intersection of symbolic powers of determinantal ideals. We prove our results by studying the Hodge and weight filtrations on the mixed Hodge module $\mathcal {O}_{\mathscr {X}}(*\mathscr {Z})$ of regular functions on the space $\mathscr {X}$ of $n\times n$ matrices, with poles along the divisor $\mathscr {Z}$ of singular matrices. The composition factors for the weight filtration on $\mathcal {O}_{\mathscr {X}}(*\mathscr {Z})$ are pure Hodge modules with underlying $\mathcal {D}$-modules given by the simple ${\text {GL}}$-equivariant $\mathcal {D}$-modules on $\mathscr {X}$, where ${\text {GL}}$ is the natural group of symmetries, acting by row and column operations on the matrix entries. By taking advantage of the ${\text {GL}}$-equivariance and the Cohen–Macaulay property of their associated graded, we describe explicitly the possible Hodge filtrations on a simple ${\text {GL}}$-equivariant $\mathcal {D}$-module, which are unique up to a shift determined by the corresponding weights. For non-square matrices, $\mathcal {O}_{\mathscr {X}}(*\mathscr {Z})$ is replaced by the local cohomology modules $H^{\bullet }_{\mathscr {Z}}(\mathscr {X},\mathcal {O}_{\mathscr {X}})$, which turn out to be pure Hodge modules. By working out explicitly the Decomposition Theorem for some natural resolutions of singularities of determinantal varieties, and using the results on square matrices, we determine the weights and the Hodge filtration for these local cohomology modules.

Abstract:We compute the finite generation ideal for Daigle and Freudenburg's counterexample to Hilbert's fourteenth problem. This ideal helps to understand how far the ring of invariants is from being finitely generated. Our calculations show that the finite generation ideal is the radical of an ideal generated by three infinite families of invariants. We show that these three families together with an additional invariant form a SAGBI-basis of the ring of invariants. We use the properties of our SAGBI-basis in our computation of the finite generation ideal.

Abstract:Abstract We study a class of combinatorially defined polynomial ideals that are generated by minors of a generic symmetric matrix. Included within this class are the symmetric determinantal ideals, the symmetric ladder determinantal ideals, and the symmetric Schubert determinantal ideals of A. Fink, J. Rajchgot, and S. Sullivant. Each ideal in our class is a type C analog of a Kazhdan–Lusztig ideal of A. Woo and A. Yong; that is, it is the scheme‐theoretic defining ideal of the intersection of a type C Schubert variety with a type C opposite Schubert cell, appropriately coordinatized. The Kazhdan–Lusztig ideals that arise are exactly those where the opposite cell is 123‐avoiding. Our main results include Gröbner bases for these ideals, prime decompositions of their initial ideals (which are Stanley–Reisner ideals of subword complexes), and combinatorial formulas for their multigraded Hilbert series in terms of pipe dreams.
