Abstract:The temperature-dependent transverse mechanical properties of single-walled nanotubes are studied using a molecular mechanics approach. The stretching and bond angle force constants describing the mechanical behavior of the sp(2) bonds are resolved in the temperature range between 0 and 1600 K, allowing to identify a temperature dependence of the nanotubes wall thickness. We observe a decrease of the stiffness properties (axial and shear Young's modulus) with increasing temperatures, and an augmentation of the transverse Poisson's ratio, with magnitudes depending on the chirality of the nanotube. Abstract:Anomalous heat transport in one-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanotubes and nanowires, is a widely debated problem in condensed matter and statistical physics, with contradicting pieces of evidence from experiments and simulations. Using a comprehensive modeling approach, comprised of lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, we proved that the infinite length limit of the thermal conductivity of a (10,0) single-wall carbon nanotube is finite but this limit is reached only for macroscopic lengths due to a thermal phonon mean free path of several millimeters. Our calculations showed that the extremely high thermal conductivity of this system at room temperature is dictated by quantum effects. Modal analysis showed that the divergent nature of thermal conductivity, observed in one-dimensional model systems, is suppressed in carbon nanotubes by anharmonic scattering channels provided by the flexural and optical modes with polarization in the plane orthogonal to the transport direction.

Abstract:We show that the local temperature dependence of thermalized electron and phonon populations along metallic carbon nanotubes is the main reason behind this non-linear transport characteristics in the high bias regime. Our model that considers optical and zone boundary phonon emission as well as absorption by charge carriers is based on the solution of the Boltzmann transport equation that assumes a local temperature along the nanotube, determined self-consistently with the heat transport equation. By using realistic transport parameters, our results not only reproduce experimental data for electronic transport, but also provide a coherent interpretation of thermal breakdown under electric stress. In particular, electron and phonon thermalization prohibits ballistic transport in short nanotubes.
Modeling Joule heating in carbon nanotubes with Monte Carlo simulations

Abstract:The ensemble Monte Carlo simulation is used to calculate the Joule heating per unit length of single-walled carbon nanotubes under an electric field applied through the nanotube axis. The electronic system and the ionic system are decoupled from each other. The rate of energy transferred from the electronic system to the ionic system in the form of the emission or absorption of longitudinal acoustic and longitudinal optical phonons is calculated stochastically to determine the Joule heating. Complete unabridged energy and phonon dispersion relations are included in order to obtain more accurate results. The effect of the temperature and the electric field magnitude on the heat generated is also taken into account. Results are compared with a prediction based on quantum mechanical integral form that calculates the electron occupation probability based on a modified Fermi-Dirac distribution. Results show a quantitative agreement between the two methods, however, the method proposed in here we believe is more accurate, because it does not make simplifications for the electron occupation probability as in the modified Fermi-Dirac distribution.

Abstract:A complex approach phonon quantum discrete model (PQDM) was developed to describe dynamics, kinetics and statistics of phonons in carbon nanostructures with zero-chirality of both zig-zag and armchair geometry. The model allows include into the pure phonon problem existing interaction with others subsystems: electrons, photons, impurities and defects. We predict that planar C- structures are geometrically stable and may bridge interelectrode space in strong external electric field. The exact solution of generalized thermal conductivity (TC) equation was obtained for nanotubes. Temperature distribution along the tube was derived analytically. The diagonalization procedure for the case ofstrong ph-ph interaction was proposed. It was shown the quadratic increasing of heat conductivity with the growth of the phonon mean free path (PMFP). Heat capacitance and the entropy of carbon linear tubes were calculated as the function of temperature. Our theoretical approach explains the nature of good TC in carbon and carbon-like materials by existing of the soft vibration branch (low frequency radial breathing mode phonons with high density of states at thermal energies) accompanied by structure hardness (high frequency $\phi$- and z-branches) providing big PMFP. TC coefficient for high conducting channel in surrounding medium was calculated. The mechanism of heat conductivity temperature damping was analyzed. Two competitive tendencies produce TC maximum at intermediate temperatures (100-300)K. It was shown the strongly non-linear increasing of effective heat conductivity with the growth nanotubes concentration. It was shown that insertion of armchair nanotube inside a medium or its coating by polyacetilene molecule considerably changes the structure of radial breathing phonons.

Abstract:The thermal conductivity of a (5, 5) carbon nanotube at room temperature is studied by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The thermal conductivity increases from 30 W/(m.K) to 1000 W/(m.K) as the tube length increases from 6 nm to 4 mu m. It is proportional to the tube length when the tube length is less than 40 nm, which indicates that the heat conduction is in the ballistic transport regime. The thermal conductivity relates to the tube length by an exponential function as the tube length increases, and the length dependence exponent decreases and approaches zero, which indicates that the phonon transport changes from the ballistic regime to the diffusive regime. Abstract:Fourier’s law is a phenomenological law to describe the heat transfer process. Although it has been widely used in a variety of engineering application areas, it is still questionable to reveal the physical essence of heat transfer. In order to describe the heat transfer phenomena universally, Guo has developed a general heat conduction law based on the concept of thermomass, which is defined as the equivalent mass of phonon gas in dielectrics according to Einstein’s mass-energy relation. The general law degenerates into Fourier’s law when the thermal inertia is neglected as the heat flux is not very high. The heat flux in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) may be as high as 1012 W/m2. In this case Fourier’s law no longer holds. However, what is estimated through the ratio of the heat flux to the temperature gradient by MD simulations or experiments is only the apparent thermal conductivity (ATC); which is smaller than the intrinsic thermal conductivity (ITC). The existing experimental data of single-walled CNTs under the high-bias current flows are applied to study the non-Fourier heat conduction under the ultra-high heat flux conditions. The results show that ITC and ATC are almost equal under the low heat flux conditions when the thermal inertia is negligible, while the difference between ITC and ATC becomes more notable as the heat flux increases or the temperature drops.
Mass Nature of Heat and Its Applications II: Non-Fourier Heat Conduction in Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted much attention in nanotechnology fields because of their unique thermal properties. The thermal conductivity of CNTs was reported to be as high as several thousand W/mK. The heat flux in CNTs can reach 109−1012 W/m2 under normal heat conduction conditions. In this paper we demonstrate that Fourier’s heat conduction law breaks down for so high heat flux. Based on a novel concept of thermomanss, which is defined as the equivalent mass of thermal energy according to Einstein’s mass-energy relation, heat conduction in CNTs can be regarded as the flow of a phonon gas governed by its mass and momentum conservation equations like in fluid mechanics. The momentum conservation equation, including driving force, inertial force and resistance terms, reduces to Fourier’s law as the heat flux is not very high and the inertial force of phonon gas is negligible with respect to the driving force. However, Fourier’s law of heat conduction no longer holds if the heat flux is very high such that the inertial force of the phonon gas is not negligible. The heat conduction behavior deviates from Fourier’s law even for steady state conditions so that the heat conduction is characterized by a non-linear relationship between the heat flux and the temperature gradient. In this case, the thermal conductivity of the CNTs can no longer be defined as the ratio of the heat flux to the temperature gradient in experiments or numerical computations. Furthermore, the ratio of the phonon gas velocity to the thermal sound speed can be defined as the thermal Mach number. Heat flow in CNTs will be choked, just like gas flows in a converging nozzle, and a temperature jump will be observed when the thermal Mach number equals or exceeds unity. In this case, the predicted temperature profile of the CNTs based on Fourier’s law is much lower than that based on the thermomass theory considering a CNT electrically heated by high-bias current flows. The intrinsic thermal conductivity can be only calculated by the present thermomass theory, rather than Fourier’s heat conduction law. The present study shows that the thermomass based theory should be applied for high flux heat conduction in CNTs where Fourier’s heat conduction law breaks down.

Abstract:The anomalous thermal transport properties of nanotubes may lead to many important applications, but the mechanisms are still unclear. In this work, we present new governing equations for non-Fourier heat conduction in nanomaterials based on the concept of thermomass. The effective thermal conductivities of nanotubes are therefore predicted which agree very well with the available experimental data. Analysis suggests that the inertial effect of heat and the confined heat flux by nanostructured surfaces are two key mechanisms causing the anomalous temperature and size dependences of effective thermal conductivity of nanotubes.

Abstract:Thermal transport in nanoscale structures has attracted an increasing attention in last two decades. Here we give a brief review of the recent developments in experimental and theoretical studies of heat transport in nano materials such as nanotube and nanowire. In particular, we will demonstrate that the phonons in nanotube and nanowires transport super-diffusively, which leads to a length dependent thermal conductivity. In other words, heat conduction in low dimensional nanostructures does not obey the Fourier’s law.

Abstract:High bias electrical transport characteristics of freely suspended metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are investigated at 250-400K in vacuum and various gases. Self-heating is exploited to examine the temperature dependence of phonon transport and optical phonon decay in SWNTs. The acoustic phonon thermal conductivity of a SWNT follows ~1/T at high temperatures. Non-equilibrium optical phonon effects in suspended nanotubes decrease as the ambient temperature increases. Gas molecules assist the relaxation of hot optical phonons along the tube length and enable enhanced current flow. In vacuum, high bias breakdown of suspended SWNTs can occur via melting caused by electrically emitted hot optical phonons at a low acoustic phonon temperature.

Abstract:The high-bias electrical transport properties of suspended metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are investigated at various temperatures in vacuum, in various gases and when coated with molecular solids. It is revealed that non-equilibrium optical phonon effects in suspended nanotubes decrease as the ambient temperature increases. Gas molecules surrounding suspended SWNTs assist the relaxation of hot phonons and afford enhanced current flow along nanotubes. Molecular solids of carbon dioxide frozen onto suspended SWNTs quench the non-equilibrium phonon effect. The discovery of strong environmental effects on high current transport in nanotubes is important to high performance nanoelectronics applications of 1D nanowires in general.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes are superb materials for nanoscale thermal management and phononic devices applications, due to their extremely high thermal conductivity (3000-6600 W/mK) and quasi-one-dimensional geometry. However, the presence of interfaces between individual carbon nanotubes as found widely in nanocomposites, nanoelectronics, and nanodevices severely limits their performance for larger scale applications. Solving this issue requires a deep understanding of the heat transfer mechanism at this nanoscale interface between low-dimensional structures, where conventional models developed for interfaces in bulk materials do not apply. Here we address this challenge through a bottom-up approach based on atomistic simulations. We demonstrate that the huge thermal resistance of carbon nanotube junctions can be significantly improved through modifying the molecular structure at the interface to enhance both the matching of phonon spectra and phonon mode coupling. Specifically, two approaches based on polymerwrapping and metal coatings are investigated here and have shown to improve both the structural stability and interfacial thermal conductivity of carbon nanotube junctions. By properly designing the interface molecular structure between individual carbon nanotubes, significant performance gains up to a factor of 4 can be achieved. These results pave the way for future designs of thermal management networks and phononic devices with thermally transparent and structurally stable interfaces.
Heat Dissipation Mechanism at Carbon Nanotube Junctions on Silicon Oxide Substrate

Abstract:This study investigates heat dissipation at carbon nanotube (CNT) junctions supported on silicon dioxide substrate using molecular dynamics simulations. The temperature rise in a CNT (∼top CNT) not making direct contact with the oxide substrate but only supported by other CNTs (∼bottom CNT) is observed to be hundreds of degree higher compared with the CNTs well-contacted with the substrate at similar power densities. The analysis of spectral temperature decay of CNT-oxide system shows very fast intratube energy transfer in a CNT from high-frequency band to intermediate-frequency bands. The low frequency phonon band (0–5 THz) of top CNT shows two-stage energy relaxation which results from the efficient coupling of low frequency phonons in the CNT-oxide system and the blocking of direct transport of high- and intermediate-frequency phonons of top CNT to the oxide substrate by bottom CNT.
Non-ballistic Thermal Transport in Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:The thermal transport properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are re-investigated using the iterative solution of the Boltzmann transport equation by including four-phonon scattering. Using only three-phonon scattering, the flexural and twisted phonon modes are found to remain non-scattered via Umklapp processes, resulting in the literature-reported divergence of thermal conductivity with tube length. However, with four-phonon scattering, while longitudinal modes remain unaffected, the otherwise non-scattered transverse modes undergo Umklapp scattering and result in a non-ballistic transport, thus settling a decades-long debate on the length dependence of thermal conductivity of SWCNTs. The predicted thermal conductivity of SWCNTs using both three- and four-phonon scatterings is 3700 W/m-K at 300 K and stays highest amongst all known materials.

Abstract:Spatially-resolved Raman spectra of individual pristine suspended carbon nanotubes are observed under electrical heating. The Raman G+ and G- bands show unequal temperature profiles. The preferential heating is more pronounced in short nanotubes (2 um) than in long nanotubes (5 um). These results are understood in terms of the decay and thermalization of non-equilibrium phonons, revealing the mechanism of thermal transport in these devices. The measurements also enable a direct estimate of thermal contact resistances and the spatial variation of thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Single wall carbon nanotubes cooled to cryogenic temperatures are outstanding electronic as well as nano-electromechanical model systems. To probe a largely unperturbed system, we measure a suspended carbon-nanotube device where the nanotube is grown in the last fabrication step, thus avoiding damage and residues from subsequent processing. In this ultra-clean device, we observe the transport spectrum and its interaction with nano-electromechanics over a wide gate voltage range and thereby over a wide range of coupling parameters between the quantum dot and the contact electrodes.

Abstract:An accurate model about the terahertz wave propagation in fluid-filled single-walled carbon nanotube, named non-local Euler-Bernoulli bean models, was studied in the past decade. The temperature is a key factor to study the mechanical properties of the nanostructures. This paper presents the thermal effect about single-walled carbon nanotubes. The governing equation for single-walled carbon nanotubes is developed through non-local Timoshenko beam theory, and size and surface effects are considered. The fluid flows quickly, and the terahertz wave propagation will be in the scope of the frequency. Thermal effect and liquid density significantly change the propagating frequency.

Abstract:Steady-state thermal transport in nanostructures with dimensions comparable to the phonon mean-free-path is examined. Both the case of contacts at different temperatures with no internal heat generation and contacts at the same temperature with internal heat generation are considered. Fourier's Law results are compared to finite volume method solutions of the phonon Boltzmann equation in the gray approximation. When the boundary conditions are properly specified, results obtained using Fourier's Law without modifying the bulk thermal conductivity are in essentially exact quantitative agreement with the phonon Boltzmann equation in the ballistic and diffusive limits. The errors between these two limits are examined in this paper. For the four cases examined, the error in the apparent thermal conductivity as deduced from a correct application of Fourier's Law is less than 6%. We also find that the Fourier's Law results presented here are nearly identical to those obtained from a widely-used ballistic-diffusive approach, but analytically much simpler. Although limited to steady-state conditions with spatial variations in one dimension and to a gray model of phonon transport, the results show that Fourier's Law can be used for linear transport from the diffusive to the ballistic limit. The results also contribute to an understanding of how heat transport at the nanoscale can be understood in terms of the conceptual framework that has been established for electron transport at the nanoscale.

Abstract:This report covers various issues related to heat and mass transport in carbon nanotubes. Heat and mass transport under quasi-one-dimensional confinement has been investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that the quasi-ballistic heat conduction manifests in the length and diameter dependences of carbon nanotube thermal conductance. Such quasi-ballistic nature of carbon nanotube heat conduction also influences the thermal boundary conductance between carbon nanotubes and the surrounding materials.The quasi-one-dimensional structure also influences the mass transport of water through carbon nanotubes. The confinement gives rise to strongly directional dynamic properties of water. Here, it is demonstrated that the confined water can be efficiently transported by using the temperature gradient. Furthermore, the simulations reveal the diameter-dependent anisotropic dielectric properties, which could be used to identify intrusion of water into carbon nanotubes.
