Abstract:We present a novel treatment of resonant massive particles appearing as intermediate states in high energy collisions. The approach uses effective field theory methods to treat consistently the instability of the intermediate resonant state. As a result gauge invariance is respected in every step and calculations can in principle be extended to all orders in perturbation theory, the only practical limitation in going to higher orders being the standard difficulties related to multi-loop integrals. We believe that the longstanding problem related to the treatment of instability of particles is now solved.

Abstract:The microscopic description of heavy-ion reactions at low beam energies is achieved within hadronic transport approaches. In this article a new approach SMASH (Simulating Many Accelerated Strongly-interacting Hadrons) is introduced and applied to study the production of non-strange particles in heavy-ion reactions at $E_{\rm kin}=0.4-2A$ GeV. First, the model is described including details about the collision criterion, the initial conditions and the resonance formation and decays. To validate the approach, equilibrium properties such as detailed balance are presented and the results are compared to experimental data for elementary cross sections. Finally results for pion and proton production in C+C and Au+Au collisions is confronted with HADES and FOPI data. Predictions for particle production in $\pi+A$ collisions are made.

A realistic coalescence model for deuteron production

Abstract:A microscopic understanding of (anti)deuteron production in hadron-hadron collisions is the subject of many experimental and theoretical efforts in nuclear physics. This topic is also very relevant for astrophysics, since the rare production of antinuclei in our Universe could be a doorway to discover new physics. In this work, we describe a new coalescence afterburner for event generators based on the Wigner function formalism and we apply it to the (anti)deuteron case, taking into account a realistic particle emitting source. The model performance is validated using the EPOS and PYTHIA event generators applied to proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV, triggered for high multiplicity events, and the experimental data measured by ALICE in the same collision system. The model relies on the direct measurement of the particle emitting source carried out by means of nucleon-nucleon femtoscopic correlations in the same collision system and energy. The resulting model is used to predict deuteron differential spectra assuming different deuteron wavefunctions within the Wigner function formalism. The predicted deuteron spectra show a clear sensitivity to the choice of the deuteron wavefunction. The Argonne $v_{18}$ wavefunction provides the best description of the experimental data. This model can now be used to study the production of (anti)deuterons over a wide range of collision energies and be extended to heavier nuclei.

P-wave Sommerfeld enhancement near threshold: a simplified approach

Abstract:The calculation of P-wave Sommerfeld enhancement in processes with unstable particles in the final state is known to be divergent. In a complete description, where resonant (on-shell unstable particles) and non-resonant contributions are included, it has been shown that results are finite. For most beyond the Standard Model applications, these complete calculations are not readily available. In this work, we are interested in the near-threshold region and we consider only the resonant contribution. In this case, we provide a simplified prescription to compute the P-wave Sommerfeld enhancement in the narrow-width approximation of the unstable particle that directly eliminates divergences. We show that we can define a finite resonant contribution without the inclusion of the non-resonant processes in a way similar to the usual S-wave Sommerfeld enhancement.

Abstract:We explore the photoproduction mechanisms for charged and neutral pion pairs off a heavy nucleus at threshold. We calculate the production of charged pairs in the Coulomb field of the nucleus in the Born approximation using explicit expressions for the differential cross sections and their connection with the total cross-section. The production of sigma mesons at threshold and their subsequent decay into pions is an important mechanism and is investigated quantitatively in a framework that can be used for both charged and neutral pions. Sigma mesons can be produced via electromagnetic (photon exchange) or strong (omega exchange) interactions. For neutral pions, another important production mechanism consists of the two-step process where charged pions are produced first and then charge exchange into two neutral pions. Differential and total cross sections are computed for each production mechanism.

Abstract:We describe pair-production models of spin-0 and spin-½ magnetic monopoles and high-electric-charge objects in proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions, considering both the Drell-Yan and the photon-fusion processes. In particular, we extend the Drell-Yan production model of spin-½ high-electric-charge objects to include Z0-boson exchange for proton-proton collisions. Furthermore, we explore spin-½ and, for the first time, spin-0 production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. With matrix element calculations and equivalent photon fluxes implemented in MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, we present leading-order production cross sections of these mechanisms in √s = 14 TeV proton-proton collisions and √sNN = 5.5 TeV ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at the LHC. While the mass range accessible in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions is much lower than that in proton-proton collisions, we find that the theoretical production cross sections are significantly enhanced in the former for masses below 82 GeV.

Abstract:The ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model is employed to simulate π−+C and π−+W collisions at plab=1.7 GeV motivated by the recent HADES results. By comparing the proton and Λ transverse momentum spectra, it was observed that the data and transport model calculation show a good agreement, if cluster formation is included to obtain the free proton spectra. Predictions of light cluster ( d, t, He3, He4 , as well as HΛ3 and ΞN ) multiplicities and spectra are made using a coalescence mechanism. The resulting multiplicities suggest that the pion beam experiment can produce a substantial amount of HΛ3 , especially in π−+W collisions due to the stopping of the Λ inside the large tungsten nucleus. The findings are supplemented by a statistical multifragmentation analysis suggesting that even larger hyperfragments are produced copiously. It is suggested that even double strange hypernuclei are in reach and might be studied in more detail using a slightly higher pion beam momentum. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.044913 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We discuss 2f production at LC energies (f \neq t). This type of reaction has a big event number and may give interesting hints to the existence and perhaps to details of New Physics like susy, LQ, Z', etc. {For} any search the radiative corrections have to be controlled carefully. An interesting challenge for theoreticians could also be the Giga-Z option of the TESLA project.

Gluino Pair Production at the LHC: The Threshold

Abstract:The next-to-leading order analysis of the cross section of hadronic gluino pair production close to threshold is presented. Within the framework of non-relativistic QCD a significant enhancement compared to fixed order perturbation theory is observed which originates from the characteristic remnant of the 1S peak below the nominal pair threshold. This enhancement is similar to the corresponding one for top production. However, as a consequence of the larger colour factor of the QCD potential the effect is significantly enhanced. The analysis includes all colour configurations of S-wave gluino pairs, i.e. singlet, symmetric and antisymmetric octet, decuplet and twenty-seven representation. Matching coefficients involving real and virtual radiation are separately evaluated for all colour and spin configurations and initial states. We concentrate on the case of gluino decay rates comparable to the gluino binding energy. The non-relativistic dynamics of the gluino pair is solved by calculating the Green's function in NLO. Numerical results for the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt(s)=14 TeV and 7 TeV are presented for various characteristic scenarios.

Enhanced Schwinger's pair production in many-center systems

Abstract:Electron-positron pair production is considered for many-center systems with multiple bare nuclei immersed in a constant electric field. It is shown that there are two distinct regimes where the pair production rate is enhanced. At small interatomic distance, the effective charge of the nuclei approaches the critical charge where the ground state dives into the negative continuum. This facilitates the transition from the negative to the positive energy states, which in turns, increases the pair production rate. At larger atomic distance, the enhancement is due to the crossing of resonances and the pair production proceeds by the Resonantly Enhanced Pair Production (REPP) mechanism. These processes are studied within a simple one-dimensional model. A numerical method is developed to evaluate the transmission coefficient in relativistic quantum mechanics, which is required in the calculation of the pair production rate. The latter is evaluated for systems with many (up to five) nuclei. It is shown that the production rate for many-center systems can reach a few orders of magnitude above Schwinger's tunnelling result in a static field.

Abstract:We illustrate how a generalization of the JIMWLK formalism which treats independently the direct and complex conjugate amplitudes can be used to describe semi-inclusive multiparticle production with rapidity correlations in pA collisions. The evolution equations that are obtained with this formalism are susceptible of numerical implementation as a Langevin process.

Abstract:Multiparticle production in (2+1) dimensions is investigated. We show that in a small region around the threshold the perturbation theory becomes unapplicable due to infrared divergencies in a class of Feynman graphs with rescattering in final state. We develop a technique based on renormalization group for summing up leading logarithms and apply it to the $\phi^4$ models with and without symmetry breaking and to the $O(N)$ $\phi^4$ theory.
Invariant Mass Distribution of Top Quark Pairs Near Threshold

Abstract:We investigate the invariant mass distribution of top quark pairs near the $2m_t$ threshold, where current theoretical predictions are incompatible with experimental measurements at the LHC. We show that higher-order non-relativistic Coulomb corrections lead to large corrections, which cannot be incorporated at fixed orders due to the divergent behavior. We derive a factorization formula to resum such corrections to all orders in the strong coupling, and calculate necessary ingredients to perform the resummation at next-to-leading power. We combine the resummation with fixed-order results and present phenomenologically relevant numeric results. We find that the resummation effect significantly enhances the differential cross section in the threshold region, and makes the theoretical prediction more compatible with experimental data.
Production of Resonances in Partial Chemical Equilibrium

Abstract:Within the model of partial chemical equilibrium (PCE) we calculate the multiplicity ratios of selected unstable resonances to given stable species. We focus on those ratios that have been measured either in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC or in Au+Au collisions at the top RHIC energy. The model provides an interpretation how in an expanding hadronic fireball with decreasing temperature the final numbers of stable hadrons after decays of all resonances remain unchanged. Each stable species acquires its own chemical potential and the resonances are kept in equilibrium with them. Multiplicities of unstable resonances provide a test of this scenario. We observe that the ratios of $K^{*}/K$ and $\rho^0/\pi$ fit reasonably well into the picture of single kinetic freeze-out of the single-particle spectra, but the $\phi$-meson and hyperon resonances are not reproduced by this model.

Abstract:We suggest a new theoretical method to describe the baryon clusterization of nuclei in hadron-nucleus reactions. As an example we have explored the nuclei production in π−+C and π−+W collisions at p lab =1.7 GeV by using the hybrid approach consisting of the Ultra Relativistic Quantum Dynamics Model (UrQMD) and the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM). The UrQMD describes the production of new baryons, and the propagation toward the subnuclear densities with the fluctuations leading to the formation of excited baryonic clusters. The SMM describes the production of final nuclei and hypernuclei after interaction of baryons inside these clusters. We demonstrate the transverse momenta, rapidity, mass distributions and excitation energies of both primary clusters and final nuclei (including hypernuclei). The results of the UrQMD and UrQMD+SMM model calculations for different clusterization parameters are compared with the available HADES experimental data on baryon production, providing a very promising window for future research on nuclei and hypernuclei formation in these reactions.

Boosted Top Quark Pair Production in Soft Collinear Effective Theory

Abstract: We review a Soft Collinear Effective Theory approach to the study of factorization and resummation of QCD effects in top-quark pair production. In particular, we consider differential cross sections such as the top-quark pair invariant mass distribution and the top-quark transverse momentum and rapidity distributions. Furthermore, we focus our attention on the large invariant mass and large transverse momentum kinematic regions, characteristic of boosted top quarks. We discuss the factorization of the differential cross section in the double soft gluon emission and small top-quark mass limit, both in Pair Invariant Mass (PIM) and One Particle Inclusive (1PI) kinematics. The factorization formulas can be employed in order to implement the simultaneous resummation of soft emission and small mass effects up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The results are also used to construct improved next-to-next-to-leading order approximations for the differential cross sections.
Threshold effects in high-energy vortex state collisions

Abstract:Collisions of particles prepared in non--plane-wave states with a non-trivial phase structure, such as vortex states carrying an adjustable orbital angular momentum (OAM), open novel opportunities in atomic, nuclear, and high-energy physics unavailable for traditional scattering experiments. Recently, it was argued that photoinduced processes such as $\gamma d \to pn$ and $\gamma p \to \Delta^+$ initiated by a high-energy vortex photon should display a remarkable threshold shift and a sizable cross section enhancement as the impact parameter $b$ of the target hadron with respect to the vortex photon axis goes to zero. In this work, we theoretically explore whether this effect exists within the quantum-field-theoretic treatment of the scattering process. We do not rely on the semiclassical assumption of pointlike, non-spreading target particle and, instead, consider the toy process of heavy particle pair production in collision of two light particles prepared as a Laguerre-Gaussian and a compact Gaussian wave packets, paying special attention to the threshold behavior of the cross section. We do observe threshold smearing due to non-monochromaticity of the wave packets, but we do not confirm the near-threshold enhancement. Instead we find an OAM-related dip at $b\to 0$ as compared with the two Gaussian wave packet collision.

This phenomena is offered for use as a good test to examine nonlinear effects of quantum electrodynamics on TESLA.

Abstract:We investigate top quark pair production near the threshold where the pair invariant mass $$ {M}_{t\overline{t}} $$ approaches 2mt, which provides sensitive observables to extract the top quark mass mt. Using the effective field theory methods, we derive a factorization and resummation formula for kinematic distributions in the threshold limit up to the next-to- leading power, which resums higher order Coulomb corrections to all orders in the strong coupling constant. Our formula is similar to those in the literature but differs in several important aspects. We apply our formula to the $$ {M}_{t\overline{t}} $$ distribution, as well as to the double differential cross section with respect to $$ {M}_{t\overline{t}} $$ and the rapidity of the $$ t\overline{t} $$ pair. We find that the resummation effects significantly increase the cross sections near the threshold, and lead to predictions better compatible with experimental data than the fixed-order ones. We demonstrate that incorporating resummation effects in the top quark mass determination can shift the extracted value of mt by as large as 1.4 GeV. The shift is much larger than the estimated uncertainties in previous experimental studies, and leads to a value of the top quark pole mass more consistent with the current world average.
Mixed QCD-EW corrections to $W$-pair production at electron-positron colliders

Abstract:The discrepancy between the CDF measurement and the Standard Model theoretical prediction for the $W$-boson mass underscores the importance of conducting high-precision studies on the $W$ boson, which is one of the predominant objectives of proposed future $e^+e^-$ colliders. We investigate in detail the production of $W$-boson pairs at $e^+e^-$ colliders, and compute the next-to-next-to-leading order mixed QCD-EW corrections to both the integrated cross section and various kinematic distributions. By employing the method of differential equations, we analytically calculate the two-loop master integrals for the mixed QCD-EW virtual corrections to $e^+e^- \rightarrow W^+W^-$. Utilizing the Magnus transformation, we derive a set of canonical master integrals for each integral family. This canonical basis satisfies a system of differential equations in which the dependence on the dimensional regulator is linearly factorized from the kinematics. We then express all these canonical master integrals as Taylor series in $\epsilon$ up to $\epsilon^4$, with coefficients articulated in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms up to weight four. Upon applying our analytic expressions of these master integrals to the phenomenological analysis of $W$-pair production, we observe that the $\mathcal{O}(\alpha\alpha_s)$ corrections are significantly impactful in the $\alpha(0)$ scheme, particularly in certain phase-space regions. However, these mixed QCD-EW corrections can be heavily suppressed by adopting the $G_{\mu}$ scheme.
