Abstract:New absolute cross section measurements of the 19 F(p, α 0 ) 16 O and 19 F(p, α π ) 16 O* reactions at energies close to the Coulomb barrier are reported. The availability of high-resolution and low-noise energy spectra obtained in the experiment allowed to resolve the 6.05–6.13 MeV doublet in 16 O. In particular, the α π channel cross section was measured in the poorly-known 1.3 MeV bombarding energy region, and the α 0 channel was investigated in the 1.6 MeV region, where a strong discrepancy between previous data-sets is present. A comprehensive R-matrix fit, including the new data, was performed and the structure of the states ranging in the 14–15 MeV region is discussed.

Abstract:The cross section of the C13(α,n)O16 reaction is needed for nuclear astrophysics and applications to a precision of 10% or better, yet inconsistencies among 50 years of experimental studies currently lead to an uncertainty of ≈15% . Using a state-of-the-art neutron detection array, we have performed a high resolution differential cross section study covering a broad energy range. These measurements result in a dramatic improvement in the extrapolation of the cross section to stellar energies potentially reducing the uncertainty to ≈5% and resolving long standing discrepancies in higher energy data. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.062702 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The origin of fluorine is a widely debated issue. Nevertheless, the ^{15}N({\alpha},{\gamma})^{19}F reaction is a common feature among the various production channels so far proposed. Its reaction rate at relevant temperatures is determined by a number of narrow resonances together with the DC component and the tails of the two broad resonances at E_{c.m.} = 1323 and 1487 keV. Measurement through the direct detection of the 19F recoil ions with the European Recoil separator for Nuclear Astrophysics (ERNA) were performed. The reaction was initiated by a 15N beam impinging onto a 4He windowless gas target. The observed yield of the resonances at Ec.m. = 1323 and 1487 keV is used to determine their widths in the {\alpha} and {\gamma} channels. We show that a direct measurement of the cross section of the ^{15}N({\alpha},{\gamma})^{19}F reaction can be successfully obtained with the Recoil Separator ERNA, and the widths {\Gamma}_{\gamma} and {\Gamma}_{\alpha} of the two broad resonances have been determined. While a fair agreement is found with earlier determination of the widths of the 1487 keV resonance, a significant difference is found for the 1323 keV resonance {\Gamma}_{\alpha} . The revision of the widths of the two more relevant broad resonances in the 15N({\alpha},{\gamma})19F reaction presented in this work is the first step toward a more firm determination of the reaction rate. At present, the residual uncertainty at the temperatures of the ^{19}F stellar nucleosynthesis is dominated by the uncertainties affecting the Direct Capture component and the 364 keV narrow resonance, both so far investigated only through indirect experiments.

Abstract:The $\mathrm{^{20}Ne(p, \gamma)^{21}Na}$ reaction is the slowest in the NeNa cycle and directly affects the abundances of the Ne and Na isotopes in a variety of astrophysical sites. Here we report the measurement of its direct capture contribution, for the first time below $E\rm_{cm} = 352$~keV, and of the contribution from the $E^{\rm }_{cm} = 368$~keV resonance, which dominates the reaction rate at $T=0.03-1.00$~GK. The experiment was performed deep underground at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics, using a high-intensity proton beam and a windowless neon gas target. Prompt $\gamma$ rays from the reaction were detected with two high-purity germanium detectors. We obtain a resonance strength $\omega \gamma~=~(0.112 \pm 0.002_{\rm stat}~\pm~0.005_{\rm sys})$~meV, with an uncertainty a factor of $3$ smaller than previous values. Our revised reaction rate is 20\% lower than previously adopted at $T < 0.1$~GK and agrees with previous estimates at temperatures $T \geq 0.1$~GK. Initial astrophysical implications are presented.

Abstract:The importance of studying the O16(n,α) reaction is motivated by multiple nuclear applications which rely on an accurate nuclear reaction data library for oxygen. Discrepancies between past experimental data on the O16(n,α)C13 reaction and its time-reverse C13(α,n)O16 reaction have led to various different nuclear data evaluations. We have measured O16(n,α) reaction cross sections using the LENZ instrument with the unmoderated white neutron source at LANSCE. Results from 2016/2017 data are discussed and used to benchmark the mcnp and geant simulations of the LENZ experimental setup. We report partial differential cross sections of O16(n,α0) at En=3.8–15 MeV and O16(n,α1+α2+α3) at En=9–15 MeV, based on the new measurement in 2021. The resonances that we observed are in good agreement with the levels in O17 that were previously measured. The LENZ cross sections are in better agreement with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluation than the with reduced cross section found in ENDF/B-VII.1 up to 6 MeV. However, the current results for O16(n,α0)Cg.s.13 appear to be in the best agreement over the entire energy range with that of JENDL/AN-2005 (ENDF/B-VI.0). https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.014601 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Measurements of the total reaction cross section for C12-16, N14-17, and O16-18 on carbon target at intermediate energies were performed on the Radioactive Ion Beam Line of the Heavy ion Research Facility in Lanzhou. A larger enhancement of sigma(R) for C-15 was observed than for its neighbors. Abstract:The C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction plays a key role in the evolution of stars with masses of M > 0.55 M-circle dot. At the Gamow peak (E-c.m. = 300 keV, T-9 = 0.2), the cross section of the C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction is so small (about 10(-17) barn) that the direct measurement in ground laboratory is not feasible with the existing technology. Up to now, the cross sections at lower energies can only be extrapolated from the data at higher energies. However, two subthreshold resonances, locating at E-x = 7.117 MeV and E-x = 6.917 MeV, make this extrapolation more complicated. In this work the 6.917 MeV subthreshold resonance in the C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction was investigated via the C-12(B-11,Li-7)O-16 reaction. The experiment was performed using the Q3D magnetic spectrograph at HI-13 tandem accelerator. We measured the angular distribution of the C-12(B-11,Li-7)O-16 transfer reaction leading to the 6.917 MeV state. Based on DWBA analysis, we derived the square of ANC of the 6.917 MeV level in O-16 to be (2.45 +/- 0.28) x10(10) fm(-1), with which the reduced-alpha width can be computed. Finally, we calculated the astrophysical S (E2) factor of the 6.917 MeV resonance to be 67.6 +/- 7.7 keV b.

Abstract:Carbon fusion reactions C( C,p) Na and C( C, ) Ne play a key role in the evolution of massive stars and in explosive scenarios such as type-Ia supernovae and super-bursts in binary stars. A direct determination of their cross sections is extremely challenging and discrepancies exist between different data sets in the literature. Here we report the results of a direct measurement performed at the CIRCE Tandem Accelerator Laboratory in Caserta (Italy), using detectors for unambiguous charge identification. Cross sections were measured in the energy range MeV with energy steps between 10 and 25 keV in the centre of mass. To our knowledge these represent the finest energy steps to date. Results are presented in the form of partial and summed astrophysical -factors for individual proton- and -particle channels. Branching ratios of individual proton- and -particle groups were found to vary significantly with energy. Angular distributions, albeit limited to three angles, were also found to be non-isotropic, which could be a potential explanation for the discrepancies observed among different data sets. Further efforts are ongoing to extend measurements to lower energies.

Abstract:The 12C(p,{\gamma})13N reaction is the onset process of both the CNO and Hot CNO cycles that drive massive star, Red and Asymptotic Giant Branch star and novae nucleosynthesis. The 12C(p,{\gamma})13N rate affects the final abundances of the stable 12,13C nuclides, with ramifications for meteoritic carbon isotopic abundances and the s-process neutron source strength. Here, a new underground measurement of the 12C(p,{\gamma})13N cross-section is reported. The present data, obtained at the Felsenkeller shallow-underground laboratory in Dresden (Germany), encompass the 320-620 keV center of mass energy range to include the wide and poorly constrained E = 422 keV resonance that dominates the rate at high temperatures. This work S-factor results, lower than literature by 25%, are included in a new comprehensive R-matrix fit, and the energy of the 1+ first excited state of 13N is found to be 2369.6(4) keV, with radiative and proton width of 0.49(3) eV and 34.9(2) keV respectively. A new reaction rate, based on present R-matrix fit and extrapolation, is suggested.

Abstract:The ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O reaction is the main neutron source for the slow-neutron-capture process in asymptotic giant branch stars and for the intermediate process. Direct measurements at astrophysical energies in above-ground laboratories are hindered by the extremely small cross sections and vast cosmic-ray-induced background. We performed the first consistent direct measurement in the range of E_{c.m.}=0.24 to 1.9 MeV using the accelerators at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory and Sichuan University. Our measurement covers almost the entire intermediate process Gamow window in which the large uncertainty of the previous experiments has been reduced from 60% down to 15%, eliminates the large systematic uncertainty in the extrapolation arising from the inconsistency of existing datasets, and provides a more reliable reaction rate for the studies of the slow-neutron-capture and intermediate processes along with the first direct determination of the alpha strength for the near-threshold state.

Abstract:The CNO cycle is one of the fundamental processes of hydrogen burning in stars. The first reaction of the cycle is the radiative proton capture on 12C and the rate of this 12C(p,gamma)13N reaction is related to the 12C/13C ratio observed e.g. in the Solar System. The low-energy cross section of this reaction was measured several times in the past, however, the experimental data are scarce in a wide energy range especially around the resonance at 1.7 MeV. In the present work the 12C(p,gamma)13N cross section was measured between 300 and 1900 keV using the activation method. This method was only used several decades ago in the low-energy region. As the activation method provides the total cross section and has uncertainties different from those of the in-beam gamma-spectroscopy technique, the present results provide a largely independent data set for future low-energy extrapolations and thus for astrophysical reaction rate calculations.

Abstract:We present the findings of a study based on a new inelastic electron-scattering experiment on the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}$ nucleus focusing on the kinematic region of $Q^2=0.8\,\mathrm{GeV}^2/{c}^2$. The measured cross section is sensitive to the transverse response function and provides a stringent test of theoretical models, as well as of the theoretical assumptions made in Monte-Carlo event-generator codes developed for the interpretation of neutrino-nucleus experiments, such as DUNE and HyperK. We find that modern generators such as GENIE and GiBUU reproduce our new experimental data within 10$\%$.

Abstract:Neutron-induced reaction cross sections of short-lived nuclei are imperative to understand the origin of heavy elements in stellar nucleosynthesis and for societal applications, but their measurement is extremely complicated due to the radioactivity of the targets involved. One way of overcoming this issue is to combine surrogate reactions with the unique possibilities offered by heavy-ion storage rings. In this work, we describe the first surrogate-reaction experiment in inverse kinematics, which we successfully conducted at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) of the GSI/FAIR facility, using the 208Pb(p,p') reaction as a surrogate for neutron capture on 207Pb. Thanks to the outstanding detection efficiencies possible at the ESR, we were able to measure for the first time the neutron-emission probability as a function of the excitation energy of 208Pb. We have used this probability to select different descriptions of the gamma-ray strength function and nuclear level density, and provide reliable results for the neutron-induced radiative capture cross section of 207Pb at energies for which no experimental data exist.

Abstract:In this study, the cross-sections of the 129Xe(n,n')129mXe and 131Xe(n,n')131mXe reactions were measured for the first time within the energy range 13.5–15.0 MeV based on the 27Al(n,α)24Na monitor reaction cross-section. The experiment employed high-purity, high-pressure, and highly enriched 129,131Xe isotope gas as the target sample. This study marks the first instance in which the measured cross-sections, corresponding correlation matrices, and associated uncertainties are provided. The TALYS-1.96 software was employed to obtain theoretical calculations, allowing for a comparison with experimental and evaluation results. The present study aids in understanding 129Xe(n,n')129mXe and 131Xe(n,n')131mXe cross-sections within 14 MeV regions, where the energy dependence exhibits relatively gradual changes and significant discrepancies between nuclear data libraries have been identified.

Abstract:The probabilities for gamma-ray and particle emission as a function of the excitation energy of a decaying nucleus are valuable observables for constraining the ingredients of the models that describe the de-excitation of nuclei near the particle emission threshold. These models are essential in nuclear astrophysics and applications. In this work, we have for the first time simultaneously measured the gamma-ray and neutron emission probabilities of 208Pb. The measurement was performed in inverse kinematics at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) of the GSI/FAIR facility, where a 208Pb beam interacted through the 208Pb(p,p') reaction with a hydrogen gas jet target. Instead of detecting the gamma-rays and neutrons emitted by 208Pb, we detected the heavy beam-like residues produced after gamma and neutron emission. These heavy residues were fully separated by a dipole magnet of the ESR and were detected with outstanding efficiencies. The comparison of the measured probabilities with model calculations has allowed us to test and select different descriptions of the gamma-ray strength function and the nuclear level density available in the literature.

Abstract:The 12 C( α , γ ) 16 O reaction plays a key role in the evolution of stars with masses of M > 0.55 M ⊙ . At the Gamow peak ( E c.m. = 300 ke V, T 9 = 0.2), the cross section of the 12 C( α , γ ) 16 O reaction is so small (about 10 −17 barn) that the direct measurement in ground laboratory is not feasible with the existing technology. Up to now, the cross sections at lower energies can only be extrapolated from the data at higher energies. However, two subthreshold resonances, locating at E x = 7.117 MeV and E x = 6.917 MeV, make this extrapolation more complicated. In this work the 6.917 MeV subthreshold resonance in the 12 C( α , γ ) 16 O reaction was investigated via the 12 C( 11 B, 7 Li) 16 O reaction. The experiment was performed using the Q3D magnetic spectrograph at HI-13 tandem accelerator. We measured the angular distribution of the 12 C( 11 B, 7 Li) 16 O transfer reaction leading to the 6.917 MeV state. Based on DWBA analysis, we derived the square of ANC of the 6.917 MeV level in 16 O to be (2.45± 0.28) ×10 10 fm −1 , with which the reduced- α width can be computed. Finally, we calculated the astrophysical S E 2 factor of the 6.917 MeV resonance to be 67.6 ± 7.7 ke V b.

Abstract:Angle-differential cross sections for neutron-induced $\alpha$ production in carbon were determined at thirty discrete neutron energy levels ranging from 6.2 to 76 MeV at the Back-n white neutron source of the China Spallation Neutron Source. Utilizing the ${\Delta}E-E$ telescopes within the Light-charged Particle Detector Array spanning angular measurements from 24.5°to 155.5° in the laboratory frame, the $^{12}C(n,\alpha)x$ reaction cross sections were obtained. These experimental findings exhibit a strong concordance with prior results and have been benchmarked against theoretical estimates from codes such as TALYS, Geant4, and assessments from the ENDF/B-VIII.0 database. Remarkably, distinct resonance-like features were observed at neutron energies of 13.7, 22.4, 29.5, and 61.8 MeV, marking their first-time identification in the literature.Furthermore, a comparative analysis involving the theoretical Distorted Wave Born Approximation was conducted.

Abstract:The $^{13}$C($\alpha$,$n$)$^{16}$O reaction is the main neutron source for the slow-neutron-capture (s-) process in Asymptotic Giant Branch stars and for the intermediate (i-) process. Direct measurements at astrophysical energies in above-ground laboratories are hindered by the extremely small cross sections and vast cosmic-ray induced background. We performed the first consistent direct measurement in the range of $E_{\rm c.m.}=$0.24 MeV to 1.9 MeV using the accelerators at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) and Sichuan University. Our measurement covers almost the entire i-process Gamow window in which the large uncertainty of the previous experiments has been reduced from 60\% down to 15\%, eliminates the large systematic uncertainty in the extrapolation arising from the inconsistency of existing data sets, and provides a more reliable reaction rate for the studies of the s- and i-processes along with the first direct determination of the alpha strength for the near-threshold state.

The partial widths of the 16.1 MeV 2+ resonance in 12C

Abstract:The 16.1MeV 2+ resonance in 12C situated slightly above the proton threshold can decay by proton-, $\alpha$-, and $\gamma$ emission. The partial width for proton emission cannot be directly measured due to the low proton energy and the small branching ratio. Instead it must be indirectly derived from other observables. However, due to several inconsistent data the derived partial width varies by almost a factor 2 dependent on the data used. Here we trace the majority of this inconsistency to different measurements of the $(p,\alpha)$ cross sections. We have remeasured this cross section using modern large area silicon strip detectors allowing to measure all final state particles, which circumvents a normalization issue affecting some of the previous measurements. Based on this we determine $\Gamma_{p}$ = 21.0(13)eV. We discuss the implications for other observables related to the 16.1 MeV $2^{+}$ resonance and for isospin symmetry in the $A=12$ system. In addition, we conclude that the dataset currently used for the NACRE and NACRE II evaluation of the $^{11}\mathrm{B}(p,3\alpha)$ reaction should be scaled by a factor of 2/3. This impacts the reaction rate accordingly.
