Abstract: Quantum fluctuations are expected to lead to highly entangled spin-liquid states in some two-dimensional spin-1/2 compounds. We have synthesized and measured thermodynamic properties and muon relaxation rates in Cu-based two-dimensional triangular-lattice spin liquids, one of which is the least disordered of this kind synthesized hitherto. Its measured properties can all be simply characterized by scale-invariant time-dependent fluctuations with a single parameter. The specific heat divided by temperature and muon relaxation rates are both temperature-independent at low temperatures, followed by a logarithmic decrease with increasing temperature. Even more remarkably, $\sim$57\% of the magnetic entropy is missing down to temperatures of \textit{O}(10$^{-3}$) the exchange energy, independent of magnetic field up to $g\mu_BH > k_BT$\@. These properties are intrinsic. They are evidence that quantum fluctuations lead either to a gigantic specific heat peak from topological singlet excitations below such temperatures, or to an extensively degenerate topological singlet ground state. This is an ultra-quantum state of matter.

Abstract:We have systematically measured susceptibility, angle dependent magnetization and specific heat on LiCu2O2 single crystal. When magnetic field (H) is rotated within ab plane, a twofold symmetry in magnetization is observed at 50 and 100K under H=5T, while a jump in magnetization is observed at certain angle with the twofold symmetry at 10K. Specific heat shows two successive transitions at Tc1=24.7K and Tc2=23K, respectively. The first one at Tc1 shows antiferromagnetic (AFM) nature, while the second one at Tc2 shows ferromagnetic (FM) behavior. These behaviors can be interpreted by the recently reported magnetic structure, and confirm the magnetic structure through another way.

Abstract:Strong non-exponential relaxation due to magnetic disorder in UCu4Ni is observed in zero- and longitudinal-field μSR measurements in this material. Zero-field experiments reveal no evidence for spin freezing down to 20 mK. Qualitatively the shape of the muon asymmetry curves in longitudinal fields is strongly affected as the field is increased from zero and less so as the field is increased towards kOe values. Analysis of the time/field scaling (t/Hγ) for the asymmetry data, performed without reference to any specific decay function or model, together with the absence of spin freezing enables one to classify this system as a quantum-spin-glass; i.e., similar to UCu4Pd. However, in contrast with the behavior of the Pd material and similarly to the more conventional spin glass AgMn, UCu4Ni follows (t/Hγ) scaling only above applied fields of order 100 Oe. Unlike UCu4Pd which has been discussed extensively as partially ordered, disorder ought to be randomly distributed in UCu4Ni.
Nonlocal Effects of Low-Energy Excitations in Quantum-Spin-Liquid Candidate Cu3Zn(OH)6FBr

Abstract:We systematically study the low-temperature specific heats for the two-dimensional kagome antiferromagnet, Cu3Zn(OH)6FBr. The specific heat exhibits a T 1.7 dependence at low temperatures and a shoulder-like feature above it. We construct a microscopic lattice model of Z 2 quantum spin liquid and perform large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations to show that the above behaviors come from the contributions from gapped anyons and magnetic impurities. Surprisingly, we find the entropy associated with the shoulder decreases quickly with grain size d, although the system is paramagnetic to the lowest temperature. While this can be simply explained by a core-shell picture in that the contribution from the interior state disappears near the surface, the 5.9-nm shell width precludes any trivial explanations. Such a large length scale signifies the coherence length of the nonlocality of the quantum entangled excitations in quantum spin liquid candidate, similar to Pippard’s coherence length in superconductors. Our approach therefore offers a new experimental probe of the intangible quantum state of matter with topological order.
Two-dimensional XY spin/gauge glasses on periodic and quasiperiodic lattices

Abstract:Via Monte Carlo studies of the frustrated XY or classical planar model we demonstrate the possibility of a finite (nonzero) temperature spin/gauge glass phase in two dimensions. Examples of both periodic and quasiperiodic two dimensional lattices, where a high temperature paramagnetic phase changes to a spin/gauge glass phase with the lowering of temperature, are presented. The existence of the spin/gauge glass phase is substantiated by our study of the temperature dependence of the Edwards-Anderson order parameter, spin glass susceptibility, linear susceptibility and the specific heat. Finite size scaling analysis of spin glass susceptibility and order parameter yields a nonzero critical temperature and exponents that are in close agreement with those obtained by Bhatt and Young in their random ${\pm J}$ Ising model study on a square lattice. These results suggest that certain periodic and quasiperiodic two-dimensional arrays of superconducting grains in suitably chosen transverse magnetic fields should behave as superconducting glasses at low temperatures.

Abstract:In the quest for materials with unconventional quantum phases, the organic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ has been extensively discussed as a quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate. Recently, an intriguing quantum critical behaviour was suggested from low-temperature magnetic torque experiments. Through microscopic analysis of all anisotropic contributions, including Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and multi-spin scalar chiral interactions, we highlight significant deviations of the experimental observations from a quantum critical scenario. Instead, we show that disorder-induced spin defects provide a comprehensive explanation of the low-temperature properties. These spins are attributed to valence bond defects that emerge spontaneously as the QSL enters a valence bond glass phase at low temperature. This theoretical treatment is applicable to a general class of frustrated magnetic systems and has important implications for the interpretation of magnetic torque, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermal transport and thermodynamic experiments.

Abstract:The spin-1/2 ferromagnetic XXZ chain is a prototypical many-body quantum model, exactly solvable via the integrable Bethe ansatz method, hosting a Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid. However, its clear experimental realizations remain absent. Here, we present a thorough investigation of the magnetism of the structurally disorder-free compound LuCu(OH)$_3$SO$_4$. By conducting magnetization and electron-spin-resonance measurements on the single-crystal sample, we establish that the title compound approximates the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic XXZ chain model with a nearest-neighbor exchange strength of $J_1$ $\sim$ 65 K and an easy-plane anisotropy of $\sim$ 0.994. The specific heat demonstrates a distinctive power-law behavior at low magnetic fields (with energy scales $\leq$ 0.02$J_1$) and low temperatures ($T$ $\leq$ 0.03$J_1$). This behavior is consistent with the expectations of the ideal spin-1/2 ferromagnetic XXZ chain model, thereby supporting the formation of a gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid in LuCu(OH)$_3$SO$_4$.

Abstract:LiV$_2$O$_4$ spinel is known to exhibit heavy fermion-like behavior below a characteristic temperature $T_K\simeq 20$ K, while it preserves a paramagnetic state down to $T\sim10^{-2}$ K due to geometrical frustration. Here, it is shown that the dynamical spin susceptibility $\chi({\bf q},\omega)$ in LiV$_2$O$_4$ exhibits anomalous duality which is modeled as a sum of itinerant ($\chi_{\rm F}$) and local ($\chi_{\rm L}$) components,and that the local spin dynamics inferred from $\chi_{\rm L}({\bf q},\omega)$ is qualitatively different from that expected from time-averaged bulk properties. The anomaly coexists with the marginal Fermi liquid behavior inferred from the $-\ln T$ dependence of the electronic specific heat over a wide temperature range below $T_K$. We argue that such unusual properties of LiV$_2$O$_4$ can be attributed to the putative metallic spin liquid state emerging near the quantum critical point between spin glass and Fermi liquid states.

Magnetic Phase Transitions of Spin-1 Ultracold Bosons in a Cubic Optical Lattice

Abstract:We investigate strongly correlated spin-1 ultracold bosons with antiferromagnetic interactions in a cubic optical lattice, based on bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. Rich phase diagrams of the system are mapped out at both zero and finite temperature, and in particular the existence of a spin-singlet condensate is established. Interestingly, at finite temperature, we find that the superfluid can be heated into a Mott insulator with even (odd) filling via a first- (second-) order phase transition, analogous to the Pomeranchuk effect in $^{3}$He. Moreover, for typical experimental setups, we estimate the critical temperatures for different ordered phases and our results suggest that direct experimental observation of these phases is promising.
Refined Spin Wave Model and Multi-magnon Bound States in $Li_{2}CuO_{2}$

Abstract:Here we report a study of the spin dynamics in the ferromagnetic chain compound $Li_{2}CuO_{2}$. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements allow for the spin Hamiltonian to be determined using a $J_{1}-J_{2}$ $XXZ$-Heisenberg spin chain model with weak interchain interactions. The primary exchange parameters determined from our data are qualitatively consistent with those of Lorenz $et$ $al.$ [Europhys. Lett. 88, 37002 (2009)], and our data allow for the resolution of additional interchain exchange interactions. We also observe the formation of two- and, potentially, three-magnon bound states. The two-magnon bound state exists only in the magnetically ordered phase of this material, consistent with stabilization by the weak, Ising-like exchange anisotropy of the nearest-neighbor intrachain interaction. In contrast, the potential three-magnon state persists in a finite temperature regime above $T_{N}$, indicating an unconventional character. Our results establish $Li_{2}CuO_{2}$ as an experimental platform for the study of exchange anisotropy-stabilized bound states in a ferromagnetic chain.

Disorder and thermally driven vortex-lattice melting in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} crystals

Abstract:Magnetization measurements in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} crystals indicate vortex order-disorder transition manifested by a sharp kink in the second magnetization peak. The transition field exhibits unique temperature dependence, namely a strong decrease with temperature in the entire measured range. This behavior rules out the conventional interpretation of a disorder-driven transition into an entangled vortex solid phase. It is shown that the transition in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} is driven by both thermally- and disorder-induced fluctuations, resulting in a pinned liquid state. We conclude that vortex solid-liquid, solid-solid and solid to pinned-liquid transitions are different manifestations of the same thermodynamic order-disorder transition, distinguished by the relative contributions of thermal and disorder-induced fluctuations.

Quantum Spin Supersolid as a precursory Dirac Spin Liquid in a Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet

Abstract:Based on the recent experiments on the triangular lattice antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, we propose the easy-axis XXZ spin-1/2 model on the triangular lattice, that exhibits a quantum spin supersolid, to be a precursory Dirac spin liquid. Despite the presence of a three-sublattice magnetic order as a spin supersolid, we suggest that this system is close to a Dirac spin liquid by exploring its spectroscopic response. The physical consequence is examined from the spectroscopic response, and we establish the continuous spectra near the M point in addition to the K point excitation from the spinon continuum on top of the three-sublattice order. Moreover, the satellite peaks were predicted at the mid-points connecting the $\Gamma$ and K points. This proposal offers a plausible understanding of the recent inelastic neutron scattering measurement in Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ and could inspire further research in relevant models and materials, such as K$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$ and Rb$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$, and even more anisotropic magnets like PrMgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$.

Spin Freezing and Non-Glassy Dynamics in Ce0.2La0.8RhIn5

Abstract:Zero-field muon spin relaxation (μSR) in non-Fermi liquid Ce0.2La0.8RhIn5 reveals disordered spin freezing with a sharp transition at 0.16K. The frozen moment at T=0 is estimated as ∼0.13μB/Ce, an order of magnitude smaller than found from thermodynamic data at higher fields and temperatures. Longitudinal-field μSR exhibits no dynamic relaxation at any temperature, showing that the spin freezing is not accompanied by the slow spin fluctuations found in spin glasses above the glass temperature and in other disordered non-Fermi liquid systems.
Novel Dipole-Lattice coupling in the Quantum-Spin-Liquid Material $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$

Abstract:A family of molecular Mott insulators on triangular lattice provided a few S=1/2 triangular quantum spin liquid candidates, with $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ being the most studied material of this group. The large number experimental works present a conflicting set of evidence, with some suggesting spin liquid behavior, while others point towards a valence bond solid with orphan spins. In this work we use Raman scattering spectroscopy to probe both local charge on molecular sites and lattice phonons as a function of temperature down to 6~K. Based on the analysis of the line shape of the BEDT-TTF charge sensitive vibration $\nu_2$ on cooling below 40 K, we suggest a development of disordered fluctuating charge disproportionation on (BEDT-TTF)$_2$ dimers of amplitude as small as 0.06$e$. The lattice phonons show strong anomalous broadening on cooling only in the (c,c) scattering channel, associated with the developing charge disproportionation. We suggest an interpretation, where the coupling of disordered charge dipoles on dimers to the lattice results in anisotropic modulation of charge transfer integrals between dimer lattice sites. Such fluctuations would result in modulation of magnetic coupling between spins which can produce fluctuating charge ordered spin-singlet pairs.

Abstract:Frustration in magnetic interactions can give rise to disordered ground states with subtle and beautiful properties. The spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 exemplify this phenomenon, displaying a classical spin liquid state, with fractionalized magnetic--monopole excitations. Recently there has been great interest in closely-related "quantum spin ice" materials, following the realization that anisotropic exchange interactions could convert spin ice into a massively-entangled, quantum, spin liquid, where magnetic monopoles become the charges of an emergent quantum electrodynamics. Here we show that even the simplest model of a quantum spin ice, the XXZ model on the pyrochlore lattice, can realise a still-richer scenario. Using a combination of classical Monte Carlo simulation, semi--classical molecular--dynamics simulation, and analytic field theory, we explore the properties of this model for frustrated transverse exchange. We find not one, but three, competing forms of spin liquid, as well as a phase with hidden, spin-nematic, order. We explore the experimental signatures of each of these different states, making explicit predictions for inelastic neutron scattering. These results show an intriguing similarity to experiments on a range of pyrochlore oxides.

Re-entrant spin-glass behavior induced by co-doping in hexagonal Y0.3Lu0.7MnO3 single crystal

Abstract:The crystal structure and magnetic properties of hexagonal Y0.3Lu0.7MnO3 single crystal have been systematically investigated. The refinement results of X-ray diffraction pattern reveal that pure sample with single phase exhibits hexagonal structure with P6 3 cm space group. Upon cooling, it undergoes multiple magnetic phase transitions, including antiferromagnetic, weak ferromagnetic, and spin-glass transitions. The spin glass at low temperature is not conventional but has a re-entrant character. We propose that the re-entrant spin-glass behavior comes from the competition between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and the disorder induced by Lu dopant, which are two characteristics of spin glass. Our study on Y0.3Lu0.7MnO3 single crystal would help people better understand the physical properties of the doped manganite compounds R 1-x A xMnO3.

Abstract:Motivated by recent experiments on material Ba3NiSb2O9, we propose two novel spin liquid phases (A and B) for spin-1 systems on a triangular lattice. At the mean field level, both spin liquid phases have gapless fermionic spinon excitations with quadratic band touching; thus, in both phases the spin susceptibility and γ=C(v)/T saturate to a constant at zero temperature, which are consistent with the experimental results on Ba3NiSb2O9. On the lattice scale, these spin liquid phases have Sp(4)~SO(5) gauge fluctuation, while in the long wavelength limit this Sp(4) gauge symmetry is broken down to U(1)×Z(2) in the type A spin liquid phase, and broken down to Z(4) in the type B phase. We also demonstrate that the A phase is the parent state of the ferroquadrupole state, nematic state, and the noncollinear spin density wave state.
Magnetic properties of LiCu$_3$O$_3$ -- quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet on depleted square lattice

Abstract:LiCu$_3$O$_3$ is a novel 2D S=1/2 antiferromagnet with randomly depleted square lattice. The crystal structure contains two types of square planes with different Cu$^{2+}\rightarrow$ Li$^{+}$ substitution rates (20% and 40%). $^7$Li NMR and magnetization measurements performed on single crystals of LiCu$_3$O$_3$ revealed the occurrence of magnetic order at $T_{c1}=123$ K and the change of the magnetic state at $T_{c2}\approx30$ K. The high temperature transition can be attributed to establishment of magnetic order in planes with higher concentration of magnetic ions and the low temperature transition -- to the magnetic ordering in planes with lower concentration of magnetic ions. Broad continuous NMR spectra below $T_{c1}$ reflect a continuous distribution of values or directions of magnetic moments in LiCu$_3$O$_3$ typical for spiral, spin-modulated magnetic structures or structures with frozen disorder. Magnetization measurements revealed a spin-flop transition which indicates weak uniaxial anisotropy of the spin structure. Relatively small value of magnetic susceptibility at all orientations of applied magnetic field shows that magnetic structure is rigid, since the estimated value of saturation field derived from differential susceptibility measured at $\mu_0 H=5$ T is $\mu_0H_{sat} \approx$200 T.

Spin glass behavior of frustrated 2-D Penrose lattice in the classical planar model

Abstract:Via extensive Monte Carlo studies we show that the frustrated XY Hamiltonian on a 2-D Penrose lattice admits of a spin glass phase at low temperature. Studies of the Edwards-Anderson order parameter, spin glass susceptibility, and local (linear) susceptibility point unequivocally to a paramagnetic to spin glass transition as the temperature is lowered. Specific heat shows a rounded peak at a temperature above the spin glass transition temperature, as is commonly observed in spin glasses. Our results strongly suggest that the critical point exponents are the same as obtained by Bhatt and Young in the ${\pm}J$ Ising model on a square lattice. However, unlike in the latter case, the critical temperature is clearly finite (nonzero). The results imply that a quasiperiodic 2-D array of superconducting grains in a suitably chosen transverse magnetic field should behave as a superconducting glass at low temperature.
