Abstract:We consider superconductivity in the light of the quantum gravity theoretical framework introduced in [1]. In this framework, the degree of quantum delocalization depends on the geometry of the energy distribution along space. This results in a dependence of the critical temperature characterizing the transition to the superconducting phase on the complexity of the structure of a superconductor. We consider concrete examples, ranging from low to high temperature superconductors, and discuss how the critical temperature can be predicted once the quantum gravity effects are taken into account.

Abstract:When first proposed in 1957, the BCS theory for superconductivity, which explained the quasi-totality of its thermodynamic and transport properties, was greeted with great circumspection, before it became the play ground of particle physicists, who largely contributed to understand the deep physics behind this phenomenon. In the course of this undertaking, revolutionizing new concepts in physics were brought to light, such as (i) the "physical significance of the phase" of a quantum mechanical wave function whose role in force-transmitting gauge fields is to control the interaction between elementary particles in a current conserving manner (ii) "spontaneous symmetry breaking" and its related to it collective Nambu-Goldstone modes, which encode the basic symmetry properties of a quantum vacuum and the associated to them conserved quatities, (iii) The "Anderson-Higgs mechanism" and its associated to it, but so far experimentally unconfirmed "Higgs field", which provides the introduction of massive force transmitting gauge fields and ultimately the mass of elementary particles. These concepts were vital in consolidating the standard model for elementary particles and presented the final answer to what distinguishes a superconducting from a non-superconducting state: "electromagnetic gauge symmetry breaking", whatever the microscospic mechanism for that might be. We illustrate here how these concepts gradually emerged, once the basic features, which characterize superconductivity - the Meissner-Ochsenfeld magnetic field screening and the fundamental London equations explaining them in a phenomenological way - were established.
On the Mechanism of Above Room Temperature Superconductivity and Superfluidity by Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:A comprehensive theory of superconductivity (SC) and superfluidity (SF) is presented of new types III and IV at temperatures into millions of degrees involving phase transitions of fermions in heat reservoirs to form general relativistic triple quasi-particles of 3 fermions interacting to boson-fermion pairs. Types 0, I, and II SC/SF are deduced from such triples as: thermally dressed, relativistic fermionic vortices; spin coupled, dressed, fermionic vortical pairs (diamagnetic bosons); and spinrevorbitally coupled, dressed fermionic, vortical pairs (ferromagnetic bosons). All known SC, SF and trends in critical temperatures (Tc) are thereby explained. The recently observed SC/SF in nano-graphene systems is explained. The above room temperature SC/SF is predicted and modeled by transformations of intense thermal boson populations of heat reservoirs to relativistic mass, weight, spin and magnetism for further reasoning over compression to electricity, weak phenomena and strong phenomena for connecting general relativism and quantum mechanics.

Road to room-temperature superconductivity: A universal model

Abstract:In a semiclassical view superconductivity is attributed exclusively to the advance of atoms' outer s electrons through the nuclei of neighbor atoms in a solid. The necessary progression of holes in the opposite direction has the electric and magnetic effect as if two electrons were advancing instead of each actual one. Superconductivity ceases when the associated lateral oscillation of the outer s electrons extends between neighbor atoms. If such overswing occurs already at T = 0, then the material is a normal conductor. Otherwise, lateral overswing can be caused by lattice vibrations at a critical temperature Tc or by a critical magnetic field Bc. Lateral electron oscillations are reduced - and Tc is increased - when the atoms of the outer s electrons are squeezed, be it in the bulk crystal, in a thin film, or under external pressure on the sample. The model is applied to alkali metals and alkali-doped fullerenes. Aluminum serves as an example of a simple metal with superconductivity. Application of the model to transition metals, intertransitional alloys and compounds of transition metals with other elements sheds light on the pattern of their critical temperature. More examples of the squeeze effect are provided by the superconductivity of PdH, MgB2, borocarbides, ferropnictides, and organic charge-transfer salts. The model also provides the superconduction mechanism in the oxide superconductors, exemplified by YBa2Cu3O7. Finally the model suggests which steps to take in order to reach superconductivity at room temperature and above.

Abstract:We modify the conventional curvature radiation (inverse Compton scattering) + synchrotron radiation polar cap cascade model by including the inverse Compton scattering of the higher generation pairs. Within the framework of the space-charge-limited-flow acceleration model with frame-dragging proposed by Harding & Muslimov (1998), such a full polar cap cascade scenario can well reproduce the $L_\gamma \propto (L_{\rm sd})^{1/2}$ and the $L_x \sim 10^{-3} L_{\rm sd}$ dependences observed from the known spin-powered pulsars. According to this model, the ``pulsed'' soft ROSAT-band X-rays from most of the millisecond pulsars might be of thermal origin, if there are no strong multipole magnetic components near their surfaces.

Interpretation of experimental Critical Current Density and Levitation of Superconductors, and a second Temperature Limit to protect Superconductors against Quench

Abstract:A recently introduced numerical model to calculate relaxation rates and relaxation time of superconductors is revisited. Relaxation time is needed to reorganise, after a disturbance, the electron system of the superconductor to new dynamic equilibrium. The idea is to extend this model to evaluation of experimental results reported in the literature for critical current density, JCrit, for levitation height and force, for stability functions, persistent currents, and, in principle, for a check of all observables that depend on JCrit. It is only after completion of the relaxation process that experimental, JCrit-dependent results can be verified uniquely. In its second part, using the same numerical model, this paper, as a corollary, investigates correlation between densities of critical current and concentration of electron pairs. As a highlight, it suggests existence of a second "critical" temperature, TQuench, expected at temperature below standard critical temperature in a High Temperature Superconductor. If under a disturbance sample temperature increases to T > TQuench, relaxation of the electron system of the superconductor to a new dynamic equilibrium might not be completed within given process time. Critical current density then cannot develop to its potentially possible, full value, JCrit(T), to provide zero-loss current transport. After decay of electron pairs under disturbances, why should the decay products at all be motivated to re-combine (relax) to electron pairs? To answer this question, the paper finally calculates entropy differences as the driving force for relaxation, and it investigates a probably existing correlation between entropy production and relaxation process.

Abstract:We discuss the derivation of the electrodynamics of superconductors coupled to the electromagnetic field from a Lorentz-invariant bosonic model of Cooper pairs. Our results are obtained at zero temperature where, according to the third law of thermodynamics, the entropy of the system is zero. In the nonrelativistic limit, we obtain a Galilei-invariant superconducting system, which differs with respect to the familiar Schrödinger-like one. From this point of view, there are similarities with the Pauli equation of fermions, which is derived from the Dirac equation in the nonrelativistic limit and has a spin-magnetic field term in contrast with the Schrödinger equation. One of the peculiar effects of our model is the decay of a static electric field inside a superconductor exactly with the London penetration length. In addition, our theory predicts a modified D'Alembert equation for the massive electromagnetic field also in the case of nonrelativistic superconducting matter. We emphasize the role of the Nambu–Goldstone phase field, which is crucial to obtain the collective modes of the superconducting matter field. In the special case of a nonrelativistic neutral superfluid, we find a gapless Bogoliubov-like spectrum, while for the charged superfluid we obtain a dispersion relation that is gapped by the plasma frequency.

Abstract:Thermodynamic and transport properties of mesoscopic conductors are strongly influenced by the proximity of a superconductor: An interplay between the large scale quantum coherent wave functions in the normal mesoscopic and the superconducting region, respectively, leads to unusual mechanisms of quantum interference. These manifest themselves in both the mean and the mesoscopic fluctuation behaviour of superconductor/normal-metal (SN) hybrid systems being strikingly different from those of conventional mesoscopic systems. After reviewing some established theories of SN-quantum interference phenomena, we introduce a new approach to the analysis of SN-mesoscopic physics. Essentially, our formalism represents a unification of the quasi-classical formalism for describing {\it mean} properties of SN-systems on the one hand, with more recent field theories of mesoscopic {\it fluctuations} on the other hand. Thus, by its very construction, the new approach is capable of exploring both averaged and fluctuation properties of SN-systems on the same microscopic footing. As an example, the method is applied to the study of various characteristics of the single particle spectrum of SNS-structures.

Abstract:The physical analysis of condensed matter systems can be difficult due to strong coupling, but the mathematical context of the AdS/CFT correspondence enables non-perturbative descriptions in terms of dual weakly coupled systems. This brief review explores the holographic condensed matter applications of AdS/CFT, particularly through the lens of a high-$T_c$ superconductor outside a Schwarzchild black hole in Anti-de Sitter space. A simple two-dimensional electron condensate Lagrangian is examined first, as employed by G. T. Horowitz, later used to calculate a frequency-dependent conductivity and a free energy analysis; the asymptotics of both in this procedure, as examined by P. Säterskog, are also reviewed. An extended Lagrangian with a higher order Maxwell term is assessed thereafter, with a conductivity peak obtained at low frequencies described well by the Drude model in certain limits. The behavior of Drude model parameters in these limits is also investigated.

Abstract:Superconductivity, the resistance-free flow of electrical charges, is one of the most exotic phenomena in solid-state physics. Even though it was discovered almost a century ago, many questions remain unanswered, in particular those concerning the physics of high-temperature superconductivity. The recent discovery of iron-based superconductors was arguably the most important breakthrough in this field for more than two decades and may provide new avenues for understanding this high-temperature phenomenon. Here I present my view of the recent developments in this field that have led to the current understanding of this important new class of superconductor.

Abstract:A magnetic field H is expelled from the interior of a metal becoming superconducting. Everybody thinks the phenomenon is perfectly well understood, particularly scientists with the highest H-index think that. I don't. I will explain why I believe that without Holes, conceptualized by Heisenberg in 1931 fifty years after Hall had first detected them in some metals, neither magnetic field expulsion nor anything else about superconductivity can be understood. I have been a Heretic in the field of superconductivity for over 30 years, and believe that Hans' little story about the emperor perfectly captures the essence of the situation. Abstract:A superconductor emerges as a condensate of electron pairs, which bind despite their strong Coulomb repulsion. Eliashberg's theory elucidates the mechanisms enabling them to overcome this repulsion and predicts the transition temperature and pairing correlations. However, a comprehensive understanding of how repulsion impacts the phenomenology of the resulting superconductor remains elusive. We present a formalism that addresses this challenge by applying the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation to an interaction including instantaneous repulsion and retarded attraction. We first decompose the interaction into frequency scattering channels and then integrate out the fermions. The resulting bosonic action is complex and the saddle point corresponding to Eliashberg's equations generally extends into the complex plane and away from the physical axis. We numerically determine this saddle point using the gradient descent method, which is particularly well-suited for the case of strong repulsion. We then turn to consider fluctuations around this complex saddle point. The matrix controlling fluctuations about the saddle point is found to be a non-Hermitian symmetric matrix, which generally suffers from exceptional points that are tuned by different parameters. These exceptional points may influence the thermodynamics of the superconductor. For example, within the quadratic approximation the upper critical field sharply peaks at a critical value of the repulsion strength related to an exceptional point appearing at $T_c$. Our work facilitates the mapping between microscopic and phenomenological theories of superconductivity, particularly in the presence of strong repulsion. It has the potential to enhance the accuracy of theoretical predictions for experiments in systems where the pairing mechanism is unknown.

Abstract:We show that a simple gravitational theory can provide a holographically dual description of a superconductor. There is a critical temperature, below which a charged condensate forms via a second order phase transition and the (DC) conductivity becomes infinite. The frequency dependent conductivity develops a gap determined by the condensate. We find evidence that the condensate consists of pairs of quasiparticles.

Abstract:This paper serves as a primer on superconductivity, inviting students for further investigation. Although the theory of superconductivity is a many-body quantum theory, here we take a more didactic route based on thermodynamics and symmetry. We briefly survey the more than a century-old field and provide a one-sentence definition of a superconductor. Surprisingly, many textbooks lack such a definition, usually introducing superconductors through their properties rather than by definition. We explain the concept of an order parameter, symmetry, and symmetry breaking. Based on this, we clarify the difference between conventional and unconventional superconductors, which is frequently a confusing topic for newcomers. We provide the reader with a taste of a current research topic in the field of unconventional superconductivity and magnetism. For this, we explain the concept of time-reversal symmetry breaking in condensed matter physics, which is usually associated with a form of magnetism. Here, we show that time-reversal symmetry might be broken in superconductors, leading to magnetic properties due to superconductivity itself. For this purpose, we utilize the method of the Ginzburg-Landau theory for phase transitions. We discuss the field of chiral superconductivity and guide the interested reader to further study.

Abstract:A quantitative theory of the superconductivity of materials confined at the nanoscale in parameter-free agreement with experimental data has been missing so far. We present a generalization, in the Eliashberg framework, of a BCS theory of superconductivity in good metals which are confined along one of the three spatial directions, such as thin films. In this formulation of the Eliashberg equations the approximation of taking the normal density of states (DOS) as its value at the Fermi level has been removed. By numerically solving these new Eliashberg-type equations, we find the dependence of the superconducting critical temperature on the confinement size , in quantitative agreement with experimental data of Pb and Al thin films with no adjustable parameters. This quantitative agreement provides an indirect confirmation that, upon increasing the confinement, a crossover from a spherical-like Fermi surface, which contains two growing hole pockets caused by the confinement, to a strongly deformed Fermi surface, occurs. This topology of the Fermi sea is implemented in the new Eliashberg-type equations to reproduce the experimentally observed maximum in the critical superconducting temperature vs film thickness of ultra-thin Pb films.
