Abstract:Circular Dyson Brownian motion describes the Brownian dynamics of particles on a circle (periodic boundary conditions), interacting through a logarithmic, long-range two-body potential. Within the log-gas picture of random matrix theory, it describes the level dynamics of unitary ("circular") matrices. A common scenario is that one wants to know about an initial configuration evolved over a certain interval of time, without being interested in the intermediate dynamics. Numerical evaluation of this is computationally expensive as the time-evolution algorithm is accurate only on short time intervals because of an underlying perturbative approximation. This work proposes an efficient and easy-to-implement improved circular Dyson Brownian motion algorithm for the unitary class (Dyson index $\beta = 2$, physically corresponding to broken time-reversal symmetry). The algorithm allows one to study time evolution over arbitrarily large intervals of time at a fixed computational cost, with no approximations being involved.

Abstract:The free self-diffusion of an assembly of interacting particles confined on a quasi-one-dimensional ring is investigated both numerically and analytically. The interparticle pairwise interaction can be either attractive or repulsive and the energy barrier opposing thermal hopping of two particles one past the other is finite. Thus, for sufficiently long times, self-diffusion becomes normal or conventional diffusion. However, depending on the particle density, subdiffusive transients with exponent 1/2 and suppression of normal diffusion are observed. Above a certain density threshold, a sudden drop to zero of the diffusion coefficient for attractive particles signals the transition to a jammed phase. Furthermore, a Gaussian cluster of attractive particles condenses, by shrinking in size, for densities larger than such density threshold; lower density clusters spread out, regardless of the interaction sign, through a diffusion mechanism that is anomalous at short times, and normal for sufficiently long times. These effects could be observed in systems with colloidal particles, vortices, electrons, among other interacting particle systems.

Abstract:We introduce a one-dimensional stochastic system where particles perform independent diffusions and interact through pairwise coagulation events, which occur at a nontrivial rate upon collision. Under appropriate conditions on the diffusion coefficients, the coagulation rates and the initial distribution of particles, we derive a spatially inhomogeneous version of the mass flow equation as the particle number tends to infinity. The mass flow equation is in one-to-one correspondence with Smoluchowski's coagulation equation. We prove uniqueness for this equation in a broad class of solutions, to which the weak limit of the stochastic system is shown to belong.

(ii) Measures associated to local times of two synchronized reflected Brownian motions are mutually singular until the time when the normal vectors at the reflection locations become identical. Abstract:We prove a property of Brownian bridges whose certain time-equidistant sequences of points are pairwise coupled by an interaction. Roughly saying, if the total time span $t$ of the bridge tends to infinity while the distance of its end points is fixed or increases slower than $\sqrt{t}$, the process asymptotically forgets this distance, just as in the absence of interaction. The conclusion remains valid if the bridge interacts in a similar way also with another set of trajectories. The main example for the interaction is the Coulomb potential.

Abstract:We consider an ensemble of $n$ nonintersecting Brownian particles on the unit circle with diffusion parameter $n^{-1/2}$, which are conditioned to begin at the same point and to return to that point after time $T$, but otherwise not to intersect. There is a critical value of $T$ which separates the subcritical case, in which it is vanishingly unlikely that the particles wrap around the circle, and the supercritical case, in which particles may wrap around the circle. In this paper, we show that in the subcritical and critical cases the probability that the total winding number is zero is almost surely 1 as $n\to\infty$, and in the supercritical case that the distribution of the total winding number converges to the discrete normal distribution. We also give a streamlined approach to identifying the Pearcey and tacnode processes in scaling limits. The formula of the tacnode correlation kernel is new and involves a solution to a Lax system for the Painlevé II equation of size 2 $\times$ 2. The proofs are based on the determinantal structure of the ensemble, asymptotic results for the related system of discrete Gaussian orthogonal polynomials, and a formulation of the correlation kernel in terms of a double contour integral.
Interacting, running and tumbling: the active Dyson Brownian motion

Abstract:We introduce and study a model in one dimension of $N$ run-and-tumble particles (RTP) which repel each other logarithmically in the presence of an external quadratic potential. This is an "active'' version of the well-known Dyson Brownian motion (DBM) where the particles are subjected to a telegraphic noise, with two possible states $\pm$ with velocity $\pm v_0$. We study analytically and numerically two different versions of this model. In model I a particle only interacts with particles in the same state, while in model II all the particles interact with each other. In the large time limit, both models converge to a steady state where the stationary density has a finite support. For finite $N$, the stationary density exhibits singularities, which disappear when $N \to +\infty$. In that limit, for model I, using a Dean-Kawasaki approach, we show that the stationary density of $+$ (respectively $-$) particles deviates from the DBM Wigner semi-circular shape, and vanishes with an exponent $3/2$ at one of the edges. In model II, the Dean-Kawasaki approach fails but we obtain strong evidence that the density in the large $N$ limit retains a Wigner semi-circular shape.

Abstract:We study a correlated Brownian motion in two dimensions, which is reflected, stopped or killed in a wedge represented as the intersection of two half spaces. First, we provide explicit density formulas, hinted by the method of images. These explicit expressions rely on infinite oscillating sums of Bessel functions and may demand computationally costly procedures. We propose suitable recursive algorithms for the simulation of the laws of reflected and stopped Brownian motion which are based on generalizations of the reflection principle in two dimensions. We study and give bounds for the complexity of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:The traction on the surface of a spherical active colloid in a thermally fluctuating Stokesian fluid contains passive, active, and Brownian contributions. Here we derive these three parts systematically, by ‘projecting out’ the fluid using the boundary-domain integral representation of slow viscous flow. We find an exact relation between the statistics of the Brownian traction and the thermal forces in the fluid and derive, thereby, fluctuation-dissipation relations for every irreducible tensorial harmonic traction mode. The first two modes give the Brownian force and torque, from which we construct the Langevin and Smoluchowski equations for the position and orientation of the colloid. We emphasise the activity-induced breakdown of detailed balance and provide a prescription for computing the configuration-dependent variances of the Brownian force and torque. We apply these general results to an active colloid near a plane wall, the simplest geometry with configuration-dependent variances, and show that the stationary distribution is non-Gibbsian. We derive a regularization of the translational and rotational friction tensors, necessary for Brownian dynamics simulations, that ensures positive variances at all distances from the wall. The many-body generalization of these results is indicated.

Abstract:Motivated by Lévy's characterization of Brownian motion on the line, we propose an analogue of Brownian motion that has as its state space an arbitrary closed subset of the line that is unbounded above and below: such a process will be a martingale, will have the identity function as its quadratic variation process, and will be ``continuous'' in the sense that its sample paths don't skip over points. We show that there is a unique such process, which turns out to be automatically a reversible Feller-Dynkin Markov process. We find its generator, which is a natural generalization of the operator $f\mapsto{1/2}f''$. We then consider the special case where the state space is the self-similar set $\{\pm q^k:k\in \mathbb{Z}\}\cup\{0\}$ for some $q>1$. Using the scaling properties of the process, we represent the Laplace transforms of various hitting times as certain continued fractions that appear in Ramanujan's ``lost'' notebook and evaluate these continued fractions in terms of basic hypergeometric functions (that is, $q$-analogues of classical hypergeometric functions). The process has 0 as a regular instantaneous point, and hence its sample paths can be decomposed into a Poisson process of excursions from 0 using the associated continuous local time. Using the reversibility of the process with respect to the natural measure on the state space, we find the entrance laws of the corresponding Itô excursion measure and the Laplace exponent of the inverse local time -- both again in terms of basic hypergeometric functions. By combining these ingredients, we obtain explicit formulae for the resolvent of the process. We also compute the moments of the process in closed form. Some of our results involve $q$-analogues of classical distributions such as the Poisson distribution that have appeared elsewhere in the literature.

Abstract:We study the two-dimensional motion of colloidal dimers by single-particle tracking and compare the experimental observations obtained by bright-field microscopy to theoretical predictions for anisotropic diffusion. The comparison is based on the mean-square displacements in the laboratory and particle frame as well as generalizations of the self-intermediate scattering functions, which provide insights into the rotational dynamics of the dimer. The diffusional anisotropy leads to a measurable translational-rotational coupling that becomes most prominent by aligning the coordinate system with the initial orientation of the particles. In particular, we find a splitting of the time-dependent diffusion coefficients parallel and perpendicular to the long axis of the dimer which decays over the orientational relaxation time. Deviations of the self-intermediate scattering functions from pure exponential relaxation are small but can be resolved experimentally. The theoretical predictions and experimental results agree quantitatively.

Abstract:In view of the remarkable progress in micro-rheology to monitor the random motion of Brownian particles with size as small as few nanometers, in association that de Broglie matter waves have been experimentally observed for large molecules of comparable nanometer size; we examine whether Brownian particles can manifest a particle-wave duality without employing a priori arguments from quantum decoherence. First, we examine the case where Brownian particles are immersed in a memoryless viscous fluid with a time-independent diffusion coefficient; and the requirement for the Brownian particles to manifest a particle-wave duality leads to the untenable result that the diffusion coefficient has to be proportional to the inverse time; therefore, diverging at early times. This finding agrees with past conclusions--that quantum mechanics is not equivalent to a Markovian diffusion process. Next, we examine the case where the Brownian particle is trapped in a harmonic potential well with and without dissipation. Both solutions of the Fokker-Plank equation for the case with dissipation, and of the Schrodinger equation for the case without dissipation lead to the same physically acceptable result-that for the Brownian particle to manifest a particle-wave duality, its mean kinetic energy needs to be half the ground-state energy of the quantum harmonic oscillator. Our one-dimensional calculations show that for this to happen, the trapping needs to be very strong so that a Brownian nanoparticle needs to be embedded in an extremely stiff solid.

Abstract:We construct a family of semimartingales that describes the behavior of a particle system with sticky-reflecting interaction. The model is a physical improvement of the Howitt-Warren flow, an infinite system of diffusion particles on the real line that sticky-reflect from each other. But now particles have masses obeying the conservation law and the diffusion rate of each particle depends on its mass. The equation which describes the evolution of the particle system is a new type of equations in infinite-dimensional space and can be interpreted as an infinite-dimensional analog of the equation for sticky-reflected Brownian motion. The particle model appears as a particular solution to the corrected version of the Dean-Kawasaki equation.

Abstract:This article focuses on a system of sticky Brownian motions, also known as Howitt-Warren martingale problem, and correlated Brownian motions and shows that infinite-dimensional orthogonal polynomials intertwine the dynamics of infinitely many particles and their $n$-particle evolution. The proof is based on two assumptions about the model: information about the reversible measures for the $n$-particle dynamics and consistency. Additionally, explicit formulas for the polynomials are used, including a new explicit formula for infinite-dimensional Meixner polynomials, the orthogonal polynomials with respect to the Pascal process. As an application of the intertwining relations, new reversible measures for the infinite-particle dynamics are obtained.

Abstract:This is a pedagogical introduction to Brownian motion on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Einstein's 1905 paper on the subject. After briefly reviewing Einstein's work in its contemporary context, we pursue some lines of further developments and applications in soft condensed matter and biology. Over the last century Brownian motion became promoted from an odd curiosity of marginal scientific interest to a guiding theme pervading all of the modern (live) sciences.

Abstract:We develop a general theory of intertwined diffusion processes of any dimension. Our main result gives an SDE characterization of all possible intertwinings of diffusion processes and shows that they correspond to nonnegative solutions of hyperbolic partial differential equations. For example, solutions of the classical wave equation correspond to the intertwinings of two Brownian motions. The theory allows us to unify many older examples of intertwinings, such as the process extension of the beta-gamma algebra, with more recent examples such as the ones arising in the study of two-dimensional growth models. We also find many new classes of intertwinings and develop systematic procedures for building more complex intertwinings by combining simpler ones. In particular, `orthogonal waves' combine unidimensional intertwinings to produce multidimensional ones. Connections with duality, time reversals and Doob's h-transforms are also explored.
