Abstract:Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is becoming popular in the field of anti-counterfeiting material due to its favorable biocompatibility, renewability, and easy modification properties, which give it great potentials as carrier of carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Herein, we report an effective method to fabricate Yb and Er doped CQDs grafted onto dialdehyde NFC (DANFC). Owning to special rheological properties of NFC, a waterborne fluorescent dual anti-counterfeiting ink was rationally designed and successfully prepared by adding NFC to waterborne ink to form a stable network structure and increase the thixotropy and yield stress. The resulting CQDs exhibited both photoluminescence (PL) and up-conversion luminescence (UCPL), emitting blue and green fluorescence at excitation wavelengths of 370 and 980 nm, respectively. The study provides a novel method to prepare the waterborne fluorescent dual anti-counterfeiting ink based on Yb and Er doped CQDs/DANFC composites, which provides a reference for its application in printing and packaging industry.

Preparation of waterborne anti-counterfeiting ink based on dual luminescent nanohybrids of bacterial cellulose nanocrystals and lanthanide‑nitrogen co-modified GQDs

Abstract:To address the growing challenge of counterfeit prevention, this study developed a novel anti-counterfeiting ink system based on bacterial cellulose nanocrystals (BCNC) and lanthanide (Er, Yb)‑nitrogen (N) co-dropped graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which exhibited both photoluminescence (PL) and upconversion photoluminescence (UCPL) fluorescent properties as well as excellent rheological characteristics. The Er/Yb/N-GQDs with positive charges were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method and subsequently assembled with negatively charged BCNC through electrostatic self-assembly to fabricate a novel nanohybrid, Er/Yb/N-GQDs-BCNC. Raman spectroscopy results indicated an enhancement in the graphitization of GQDs due to lanthanide modification. The TEM results demonstrated a homogeneous distribution of Er/Yb/N-GQDs on BCNC, while XRD, FTIR, and XPS analyses confirmed their physical binding, thus validating the successful synthesis of novel nanohybrids. Then, Er/Yb/N-GQDs-BCNC was introduced into PVA waterborne ink and exhibited dual anti-counterfeiting properties by emitting blue fluorescence at Em 440 nm under Ex 370 nm and green fluorescence at Em 550 nm under Ex 980 nm. Furthermore, the incorporation of BCNC significantly enhanced the thixotropic behavior and yield stress of the PVA waterborne ink. This enhancement made the dual anti-counterfeiting fluorescent ink more suitable for diversified applications on different devices and various substrates, thus providing a novel approach for convenient and rapid information encryption and high security anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:For smart anti‐counterfeiting inks, a synthesized cyanostilbene‐based liquid crystal monomer (CSRM) is self‐assembled with conventional nematic monomers. Owing to irreversible photoisomerization of CSRM in molecular scale, the luminescence polarization of smart ink can be controlled under 365 nm UV light. Furthermore, the controlled polarization is robustly fixed by photopolymerization with blue light. Multilevel anti‐counterfeiting labels are demonstrated from the ink. To identify and protect authentics from counterfeits, anti‐counterfeiting materials are developed. In spite of many advances in luminescent anti‐counterfeiting materials, there is still a need for easily processible, multilevel anti‐counterfeiting materials. Here, the study reports a novel strategy for the production of smart anti‐counterfeiting inks and films using a cyanostilbene‐based liquid crystal (LC) monomer (CSRM). This smart ink is prepared by mixing CSRM and conventional nematic LC monomers. The optimized ink with a nematic mesophase is uniaxially oriented by simple shear coating for high transmittance and linearly polarized light emission. Upon subsequent irradiation with 365 nm UV light using a photomask, a phase transition to an isotropic state occurs by photoisomerization of CSRM in selected areas, resulting in unpolarized photoluminescence in those areas. Two optically different regions (UV treated and untreated) can be permanently fixed by photopolymerization under 460 nm blue light. Multilevel anti‐counterfeiting labels programmed by simple shear coating, molecular self‐assembly, selective photoisomerization, and photopolymerization fixation can provide a new insight in developing smart anti‐counterfeiting inks and films.

Inkjet Printed Photonic Cellulose Nanocrystal Patterns

Abstract:Naturally-sourced cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are elongated, birefringent nanoparticles that can undergo cholesteric self-assembly in water to produce vibrant, structurally colored films. As such, they are an ideal candidate for use as sustainable and cost-effective inks in the printing of scalable photonic coatings and bespoke patterns. However, the small volume and large surface area of a sessile CNC drop typically leads to rapid evaporation, resulting in microfilms with a coffee-stain-like morphology and very weak coloration. Here, it is demonstrated that inkjet printing of CNC drops directly through an immiscible oil layer can immediately inhibit water loss, resulting in reduced internal mass flows and greater time for cholesteric self-assembly. The color of each microfilm is determined by the initial composition of the drop, which can be tuned on-demand by exploiting the overprinting and coalescence of multiple smaller drops of different inks. This enables the production of multicolored patterns with complex optical behaviors, such as angle-dependent color and polarization-selective reflection. Finally, the array can be made responsive to stimuli (e.g., UV light, polar solvent) by the inclusion of a degradable additive. This suite of functional properties promotes inkjet-printed photonic CNC arrays for smart colorimetric labeling or optical anticounterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Microprinting is changing anti-counterfeit technology by producing complex micro-/nano-scale labels to increase the security level. However, the current microprinted anti-counterfeiting labels only contain 2D features, thought of as single coding (e.g. mostly in texts or graphs), unable to satisfy the high-end anti-counterfeiting demands of producing multi-coding, high-storage-density labels. Here, we introduce an approach for fluorescence printing to produce a 3D colourful, sophisticated anti-counterfeiting label. In the method, pre-synthetic QDs are printed with photoresists based on two-photon polymerisation, allowing for accurate regulation of fluorescence in both 2D and 3D. The fabricated photoresists exhibit immediate and postprocessing-free colour emissions under UV light. We demonstrated the ultra-high free design and accurate manufacturing capability of the approach by fabricating multi-colour, multi-layer patterns containing both texts and graphs on a 50μm × 50μm × 30μm portable label. The approach can also be applied to multi-dimensional optical data storage and colourful microdisplays.

Abstract:Hydrogel inks that alter color in reaction to temperature change were developed for self-healing anti-counterfeiting printing applications. A self-healing ink of cellulose nanofibers (CNF)-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) hydrogel immobilized with anthocyanidin (ACD) chromophore that was isolated from a red cabbage plant was prepared for security encoding. The current self-healable ink (CNF@PLA) showed efficient thermochromism with high reversibility. Using various concentrations of ACD-based red cabbage extract, different thermochromic inks were developed. Homogeneous films were applied to a paper surface to display a purplish shade (614 nm) at room temperature, demonstrating a color change to reddish (449 nm) when increasing the room temperature to 60 °C as proved by absorbance spectral analysis and CIE (International Commission on Illumination) Lab coordinates. CNF were employed as dispersive nanofiller to avoid the agglomeration of IACD particles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the diameters of IACD nanoparticles ranged between 12–19 nm, and CNF showed diameters of 50–80 nm. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to examine the morphological properties and elemental analysis of thermochromic samples. Both rheological and mechanical features were determined for hydrogel and printed papers, respectively. The cytotoxicity study and antimicrobial activity of ink (CNF@PLA) were also reported.

Abstract:Utilizing advanced multiple channels for information encryption offers a powerful strategy to achieve high-capacity and highly secure data protection. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) offer a sustainable resource for developing information protection materials. In this study, we present an approach that is easy to implement and adapt for the covalent attachment of various fluorescence molecules onto the surface of CNCs using the Mannich reaction in aqueous-based medium. Through the use of the Mannich reaction-based surface modification technique, we successfully achieved multi-color fluorescence in the resulting CNCs. The resulting CNC derivatives were thoroughly characterized by 2D HSQC NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Notably, the optical properties of CNCs were well maintained after modification, resulting in films exhibiting blue and red structural colors. This enables the engineering of highly programmable and securely encoded anti-counterfeit labels. Moreover, subsequent coating of the modified CNCs with MXene yielded a highly secure encrypted matrix, offering advanced security and encryption capabilities under ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths. This CNC surface-modification enables the development of multimodal security labels with potential applications across various practical scenarios.

Abstract:Fluorescent inks have been emerged as a desirable encoding technique to enhance anticounterfeiting printing of commercial goods. However, significant drawbacks with fluorescent inks, such as poor durability, low efficiency, and high cost. Herein, we describe the preparation of a self-healing authentication ink based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel immobilized with nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCD) nanoparticles (NPs) for cutting-edge anticounterfeiting applications. Security inks that self-heal are very durable. Under ambient conditions, the prepared NCD@CMC hydrogel could self-heal with a high healing efficiency. It might stick to diverse surfaces such as plastic, glass and paper sheets. The self-healing composite ink demonstrated outstanding photostability under UV light. Straightforward and environmentally friendly method was applied on the agricultural waste of rice straw toward the production of NCD using hydrothermal carbonization in an aqueous medium, and in the presence of NH4OH as an inexpensive passivating agent. The quantum yield (QY) for NCD reached 24.09 %. Various concentrations of NCD NPs were employed to produce self-healable nanocomposite inks with a variety of emission properties. Stamping homogeneous films onto paper surfaces produced a transparent layer. The CIE Lab and emission spectra of prints independently verified the capability of NCD nanocomposite inks to vary their color to blue under UV illumination. To measure the particle diameter of the prepared NCD, their morphological characteristics were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to indicate diameters of 10-25 nm. Utilizing various analytical techniques, the morphology and chemical composition of the fluorescent prints were examined. We examined the mechanical qualities of the stamped papers as well as the rheological characteristics of the ink hydrogel. Due to their colorless appearance, the excitation band of the printed films was peaked at 364 nm, while their emission was peaked at 465 nm. The current smart ink holds high potential for numerous applications like smart packaging and authentication, and shows great promise as a practical and mass production approach for easily creating anticounterfeiting stamps.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have the potential to be used as functional hybrid composite materials derived from biological sources. CNCs possess a rod-like structure and surface functionality that allows for chemical modifications. These chemically modified CNCs exhibit liquid-crystalline phases, although their phase behavior has received less attention in research. For this study, we examined CNCs derived from waste lignocellulosic mass. We subjected them to chemical modification using maleic anhydride (MA) at a degree of substitution of 0.39 molecules of MA per glucose unit. The surface modification was confirmed using spectroscopic techniques. The diameter of CNCs that underwent MA tuning was decreased from the original size of 23.8–15.4 nm. The phase behavior of the modified MACNCs was thoroughly examined and showed a biphasic pattern until reaching a concentration of 9.65 × 10 7 nm −3 . Furthermore, an assessment was conducted on the thermal stability of the prepared MACNCs, and a modeling approach was used to determine the thermal degradation kinetics. These MACNCs were used as a subtle pigment on paper through screen printing, stamping, and pen techniques. This type of aqueous ink is highly valuable for protecting books, drafts, and banknotes from counterfeiting.

Abstract:Counterfeiting and forgery have caused enormous economic loss and many safety concerns, and many approaches have been employed for anti-counterfeiting. However, most of these approaches suffer intrinsic issues such as replicability, environmental sustainability, or the requirement of professional equipment to authenticate. Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) chiral photonic films prepared by evaporation induced self-assembling display iridescent structural colors, circular dichroism, and unique fingerprint texture in microsize, which are promising for anti-counterfeiting. However, the application of CNC films in anti-counterfeiting are severely limited by their brittleness and nonuniformity. Herein, CNC chiral photonic micro-flakes facilely prepared via ultrasonication of CNC films preserve the optical characteristics of CNC chiral photonic films, and can be mixed with polymer matrices to fabricate flexible films or coatings for practical anti-counterfeiting and identification. The anti-counterfeiting characteristics of CNC chiral photonic micro-flakes can be authenticated by an inspection with naked eyes, using 3D glasses, and further with a polarized optical microscope. Therefore, CNC chiral photonic micro-flakes provide a non-replicable, environmentally friendly, easy-to-authenticate, and practical approach for multilevel anti-counterfeiting and identification.

Abstract:Recently, water-borne fluorescent inks have attracted extensive attention in anti-counterfeiting applications due to their convenient implementation and eco-friendliness. However, due to poor service durability, the latent authorization information from the inks is easily damaged, and even disappears when encountering water. Moreover, most of the existing fluorescent inks are monochromic, toxic, and allergic to skin, thus are unsuitable for their sustainability during real-life applications. Herein, this work presents environment-friendly, durable, and multicolor fluorescent anti-counterfeiting silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs)/sodium alginate (SA) inks. The multicolor SiNPs are synthesized by a one-pot method with defined morphologies and optical properties. Subsequently, SA is employed as the binder to prepare the fluorescent inks with optimized rheological properties. Practicability results show that the SiNPs/SA inks not only exhibit excellent printability, but also impart authentic information with superior covert performance. More notably, spraying solution of calcium dichloride can further improve fluorescent fastnesses of the SiNPs/SA inks by ionic crosslinking.

Abstract:In addition to causing trillion-dollar economic losses every year, counterfeiting threatens human health, social equity and national security. Current materials for anti-counterfeiting labelling typically contain toxic inorganic quantum dots and the techniques to produce unclonable patterns require tedious fabrication or complex readout methods. Here we present a nanoprinting-assisted flash synthesis approach that generates fluorescent nanofilms with physical unclonable function micropatterns in milliseconds. This all-in-one approach yields quenching-resistant carbon dots in solid films, directly from simple monosaccharides. Moreover, we establish a nanofilm library comprising 1,920 experiments, offering conditions for various optical properties and microstructures. We produce 100 individual physical unclonable function patterns exhibiting near-ideal bit uniformity (0.492 ± 0.018), high uniqueness (0.498 ± 0.021) and excellent reliability (>93%). These unclonable patterns can be quickly and independently read out by fluorescence and topography scanning, greatly improving their security. An open-source deep-learning model guarantees precise authentication, even if patterns are challenged with different resolutions or devices.

A new 3D printing strategy by enhancing shear-induced alignment of gelled nanomaterial inks resulting in stronger and ductile cellulose films

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are derived from biomass and have significant potential as fossil-based plastic alternatives used in disposable electronics. Controlling the nanostructure of fibrils is the key to obtaining strong mechanical properties and high optical transparency. Vacuum filtration is usually used to prepare the CNFs film in the literature; however, such a process cannot control the structure of the CNFs film, which limits the transparency and mechanical strength of the film. Here, direct ink writing (DIW), a pressure-controlled extrusion process, is proposed to fabricate the CNFs film, which can significantly harness the alignment of fibrils by exerting shear stress force on the filaments. The printed films by DIW have a compact structure, and the degree of fibril alignment quantified by the small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS) increases by 24 % compared to the vacuum filtration process. Such a process favors the establishment of the chemical bond (or interaction) between molecules, therefore leading to considerably high tensile strength (245 ± 8 MPa), elongation at break (2.2 ± 0.5 %), and good transparency. Thus, proposed DIW provides a new strategy for fabricating aligned CNFs films in a controlled manner with tunable macroscale properties. Moreover, this work provides theoretical guidance for employing CNFs as structural and reinforcing materials to design disposable electronics.

Abstract:Luminescent quantum dots (QDs) patterns have attracted great attention in anticounterfeiting applications because they can emit fluorescence upon excitation. Here, different from traditional luminescent patterns for anticounterfeiting purposes, a novel strategy based on the reversible cation exchange enabled Ag doped CdS quantum dots (CdS:Ag QDs) is reported to provide a higher security for anticounterfeiting. First, the reversibility of cation exchange enabled doped QDs crystal engineering have been revealed. The switch from nonluminescence to luminescence for several cycles by such a mechanism has been achieved. Second, the hydrophilic doped QDs “ink” can be prepared by surface modification, and then flexible bulk‐sized patterns can be printed on different substrates by inkjet printing technology, such as the parchment paper, PET foil, and paper currency substrates. Third, owing to the characteristic of stable crystal structure of CdS:Ag QDs, the patterns of such doped QDs on substrates can be switched by in situ cation exchange to achieve conversion of the disappearance and recovery of luminescent signals, from which a multiple dual mode anticounterfeiting verification can be provided. Nonluminescence to luminescence hydrophilic doped quantum dots “ink” have been prepared for printing flexible bulk‐sized patterns on different substrates and the reversibility of the cation exchange mechanism has been applied for a dual mode anticounterfeiting application. This effective strategy can extend the selectivity of anticounterfeiting applications that can provide improved security.

Abstract:The proliferation of misleading information and counterfeit products in conjunction with technical progress presents substantial worldwide issues. To address the issue of counterfeiting, many tactics, such as the use of luminous anticounterfeiting systems, have been investigated. Nevertheless, traditional fluorescent compounds have a restricted effectiveness. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), known for their renewable nature and outstanding qualities, present an excellent opportunity to develop intelligent, optically active materials formed due to their self-assembly behavior and stimuli response. CNCs and their derivatives-based self-assemblies allow for the creation of adaptable luminous materials that may be used to prevent counterfeiting. These materials integrate the photophysical characteristics of optically active components due to their stimuli-responsive behavior, enabling their use in fibers, labels, films, hydrogels, and inks. Despite substantial attention, existing materials frequently fall short of practical criteria due to limited knowledge and poor performance comparisons. This review aims to provide information on the latest developments in anticounterfeit materials based on stimuli-responsive CNCs and derivatives. It also includes the scope of artificial intelligence (AI) in the near future. It will emphasize the potential uses of these materials and encourage future investigation in this rapidly growing area of study.
Antistatic Structural Color and Photoluminescent Membranes from Co-assembling Cellulose Nanocrystals and Carbon Nanomaterials for Anti-counterfeiting

Abstract:Static charges on optical anti-counterfeiting membranes may lead to materials structural changes, dust stain aggravation, and misreading of optical information. Incorporating conductive particles is a common way to transfer accumulative charges, but the key issue is how to achieve high dispersion and effective distribution of particles. According to the strategy of assembly-induced structural colors, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were employed as a solid emulsifier to stabilize hydrophobic carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) in aqueous media; subsequently, by solvent-evaporation-modulated co-assembly under a condition of 30 °C and 20 RH%, the binary suspensions containing 2 wt% CNC and CNPs with the equivalent concentration relative to CNC ranged from 1:40 to 1:10 were used to prepare antistatic composite membranes. Surface chemistry regulation of CNCs was applied to optimize the dispersibility of CNPs and the orientation of assembled CNC arrays, and the hydrophilic CNCs were more favorable for dispersion and assembly of binary suspension systems. Meanwhile, one-dimension carbon nanotube (CNT) and zero-dimension carbon black (CB) were found to show better dispersibility than two-dimension graphene, which was verified by a semiquantitative theoretical study. Moreover, the stable binary systems of CNT/CNC and CB/CNC were chosen for co-assembly as membranes, and the uniaxial orientation could be optimized as the full-width of 9.8° at half-maximum deviation angle while the surface resistivity could also drop down to 3.42 × 102 Ω·cm·cm−1. The structural color character of such paper-homology and antistatic-integrated membranes contributes to optical information hiding-and-reading, and shows great potential as optical mark recognition materials for electrostatic discharge protective packaging and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Structural color anti-counterfeiting inks with practical production significance are successfully manufactured by facilely mixing SiO2@PDA@PHEMA hybrid colloidal particles with mediated molecules of HEMA. Appropriate rheological properties of photonic inks provide high viscosity and self-supporting performance to ensure sufficient interaction between particles to form short-range ordered arrays during the mixing and shearing process, generating non-iridescent colors. The strong and broad uniform light absorption capabilities of polydopamine (PDA) not only suppress the incoherent multiple scattering of photonic inks, but also enable photonic inks to derive surprisingly optical anti-counterfeiting properties, i.e. black color in ambient illumination yet dazzling reflection coloration under strong illumination. With 3D printing technique, complicated angle-independent patterns with visualization and high fidelity are supposed to be expectedly fabricated with as-prepared photonic inks for the real-life applications of smart anti-counterfeiting labels, encrypted information encoding or selective color rendering accessories.

Abstract:The decryption and verification of encrypted information via a simple and efficient method is always difficult and challenging in the field of information security. Herein, a series of water-sensitive fluorescent microgels are fabricated for highly secured anti-counterfeiting with authenticity identification. The initial negatively charged microgels (MG) are made up of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), acrylic acid (AAc) and anthracen-9-yl acrylate (9-ANA, blue fluorescent monomer). The prepared MGs can bind cationic fluorescent dyes such as 5-aminofluorescein (FITC, green fluorescent dye) and rhodamine B (Rh B, red fluorescent dye) via electrostatic interaction, emitting multi-fluorescent colors based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. Furthermore, the fluorescence colors of MG-derived systems can be rapidly changed by swelling in water, which can block the FRET process and change the aggregation state of dyes. With the assistance of inkjet printing, multi-color security patterns can be designed and encoded, which can be revealed by UV irradiation and further verified by water stimulation. This study has pioneered a novel strategy to verify the authenticity of decrypted information, which greatly improves the security level of information.

Abstract:The core-shell structured Ag@SiO2 nanomaterial integrated with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy promises a critical application in anti-counterfeiting. Security labels have been fabricated based on Ag@SiO2 embedded with Raman reporters. The Ag@SiO2 nanomaterial shows good stability and excellent anti-interference property for anti-counterfeiting. Multiple kinds of Raman probe molecules have been anchored in the Ag@SiO2 labels to provide specific and abundant encoding information. The flexible encoding security information could be controlled conveniently by adjusting probe molecules, which not only enrich the SERS information but also improve the level of anti-counterfeiting. Furthermore, the Ag@SiO2 shown excellent stability in organic solvent, and successfully used in ink for the anti-counterfeiting application.
Dual-emitting cellulose nanocrystal hybrid materials with circularly polarized luminescence for anti-counterfeiting labels

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) hybrid materials with numerous optical states have great potential as anti-counterfeiting labels and information encryption materials. However, it is challenging to construct multicolor emitting materials with tunable behaviors, which can dramatically enhance anti-counterfeiting abilities. Here, free-standing composite films with vivid multi-structural colors and dual-emitting fluorescence are successfully fabricated through a host-guest coassembly strategy. The lanthanide complex and an aggregation-induced emission molecule (tetraphenylethylene derivative, TPEC) are selected as luminescent guests, which are integrated into the chiral nematic structure of CNCs. The obtained photonic films display broadband reflection across the visible spectrum, which may be attributed to the chiral nematic domains with variations in the helical pitches and helical axis orientations. Under 254 nm excitation, the film exhibits bright red emission, while blue-green emission switching occurs under 365 nm excitation. The broad reflection band of the film covers both the green and red fluorescent emission centers, and right circularly polarized luminescence emission with different dissymmetry factors is produced due to the selective reflection of the left chiral nematic structure. A large glum value up to -0.21 at 600 nm was realized. Additionally, CNC-based materials with tailored shapes are further used in anti-counterfeit tags and decorative applications.
