Abstract:The second MAGIC telescope, a clone of the first 17 m diameter MAGIC telescope, has entered the final commissioning phase and will soon start to take data, preferentially in the so-called stereo-mode. The control system for both telescopes is assigned to a number of autonomous functional units called subsystems. The control hardware and software components of the second telescope subsystems have been modified with respect to their counterparts of the first telescope. A new Central Control (CC) program has been developed to communicate with all the subsystems of both telescopes and to coordinate their functionality thus easing the stereo data taking procedure. We describe the whole control system in detail: all the subsystems and their communication with the Central Control, the CC graphic user interface that grants operators the full control over the two telescopes, and the automatic checking procedures, which guarantee the safety and 'health' of the apparatus.

Abstract:The MAGIC telescopes are two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) located on the Canary island of La Palma. The telescopes are designed to measure Cherenkov light from air showers initiated by gamma rays in the energy regime from around 50 GeV to more than 50 TeV. The two telescopes were built in 2004 and 2009, respectively, with different cameras, triggers and readout systems. In the years 2011-2012 the MAGIC collaboration undertook a major upgrade to make the stereoscopic system uniform, improving its overall performance and easing its maintenance. In particular, the camera, the receivers and the trigger of the first telescope were replaced and the readout of the two telescopes was upgraded. This paper (Part I) describes the details of the upgrade as well as the basic performance parameters of MAGIC such as raw data treatment, dead time of the system, linearity in the electronic chain and sources of noise. In Part II, we describe the physics performance of the upgraded system.

Abstract:The envisioned sixth-generation (6G) of wireless networks will involve an intelligent integration of communications and computing to meet the urgent demands of task-oriented applications. To realize the concept of the smart radio environment, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are becoming promising options for offering programmable propagation of impinging electromagnetic signals via external control. However, the purely reflective nature of conventional RISs induces significant challenges in supporting a variety of computation tasks, such as wave-based calculation and signal processing. To fulfill such computing demands, new metamaterials are needed to complement the existing technologies of reconfigurable surfaces, enabling further diversification of electronics and their applications. In this event, we introduce the concept of reconfigurable intelligent computational surface (RICS), which is composed of two reconfigurable multifunctional layers: the reconfigurable beamforming layer, which is responsible for tunable signal reflection, absorption, and refraction, and the intelligence computation layer, which concentrates on meta-materials-based task-oriented computing. By exploiting the recent trends in computational metamaterials, RICSs have the potential to make joint computation and communication a reality. We further demonstrate two typical tasks of RICSs, in particular a spectrum learning task for intelligent communications and a signal processing task for physical layer security. Future research challenges arising from the design and operation of RICSs are finally highlighted.

Abstract:One of the aims of modern microscopy is to quantify two-, three-, or even four-dimensional phenomena in biology, medicine, and material sciences. The requirements imposed on software by such data processing are exemplified by the design considerations of the IMAGIC-5 software system. This system includes facilities for multivariate statistical analysis of large data sets, for correlation averaging of two-dimensional crystals, and for three-dimensional reconstruction of macromolecular structures. The molecules may be arranged as two-dimensional crystals, as helices, or as single particles with arbitrary pointgroup symmetry. IMAGIC's novel angular reconstitution approach allows for the rapid determination of three-dimensional structures of uncrystallized molecules to high resolution. The general organization, user interaction strategy, file structure, and extendibility of IMAGIC are discussed and illustrated with some practical examples.

Abstract:In this contribution we describe the design of the Data AcQuisition (DAQ) and online analysis software of the MAGIC telescopes after the 2012 upgrade. Although the final stereo trigger requires coincidence between the two telescopes, the actual data acquisition is performed independently, producing two separate data streams. Events are first readout and built from the front-end electronics and then stored in the DAQs' internal ring buffer for further processing: pre-calibration and signal extraction. The pixel signals, previously used only for data quality monitoring, are now also sent "on-the-fly" to the centralized online analysis program MOLA, which acts as a single client for the two DAQ data streams, and uses this information to provide preliminary high level analysis results. The integrated DAQ and online analysis programs allows an immediate feedback in case of a rapid gamma-ray flare of the pointed astrophysical source.

Establishing the MAGIC data legacy: adopting standardised data formats and open-source analysis tools

Abstract:The standardisation of gamma-ray astronomical data emerged in recent years as a necessity for the future generation of gamma-ray observatories. Nevertheless, adopting a common format for gamma-ray instruments can already benefit the current generation of gamma-ray instruments. As the end of their operations approaches, it provides a natural solution for the production of their data legacy. Additionally it eases data combination for multi-instrument analyses, thus enhancing the potential for scientific discovery with the wealth of data so far gathered. In this contribution, we present for the first time the effort to adapt the data of the MAGIC telescopes to the standardised format proposed by the Data Formats for Gamma-ray Astronomy initiative. We validate the data conversion by analysing the standardised data with the open-source software Gammapy and comparing the results obtained against those produced with the MAGIC proprietary software, MARS. For both samples chosen (Crab Nebula and Mrk421 observation), for all the scientific products extracted (spectra and light curves), we observe good agreement between the results of the two software.

Abstract:We present the current status of CMS data analysis architecture and describe work on future Grid-based distributed analysis prototypes. CMS has two main software frameworks related to data analysis: COBRA, the main framework, and IGUANA, the interactive visualisation framework. Software using these frameworks is used today in the world-wide production and analysis of CMS data. We describe their overall design and present examples of their current use with emphasis on interactive analysis. CMS is currently developing remote analysis prototypes, including one based on Clarens, a Grid-enabled client-server tool. Use of the prototypes by CMS physicists will guide us in forming a Grid-enriched analysis strategy. The status of this work is presented, as is an outline of how we plan to leverage the power of our existing frameworks in the migration of CMS software to the Grid.

Abstract:The Monte Carlo (MC) method offers significant advantages in handling complex geometries and physicalprocesses in particle transport problems and has become a widely used approach in reactor physics analysis,radiation shielding design, and medical physics. However, with the rapid advancement of new nuclear en-ergy systems, the Monte Carlo method faces challenges in efficiency, accuracy, and adaptability, limiting itseffectiveness in meeting modern design requirements. Overcoming technical obstacles related to high-fidelitycoupling, high-resolution computation, and intelligent design is essential for using the Monte Carlo methodas a reliable tool in numerical analysis for these new nuclear energy systems. To address these challenges,the Nuclear Energy and Application Laboratory (NEAL) team at the University of South China developed amultifunctional and generalized intelligent code platform called MagicMC, based on the Monte Carlo particletransport method. MagicMC is a developing tool dedicated to nuclear applications, incorporating intelligentmethodologies. It consists of two primary components: a basic unit and a functional unit. The basic unit,which functions similarly to a standard Monte Carlo particle transport code, includes seven modules: geometry,source, transport, database, tally, output, and auxiliary. The functional unit builds on the basic unit by addingfunctional modules to address complex and diverse applications in nuclear analysis. MagicMC introduces adynamic Monte Carlo particle transport algorithm to address time-space particle transport problems withinemerging nuclear energy systems and incorporates a CPU-GPU heterogeneous parallel framework to enablehigh-efficiency, high-resolution simulations for large-scale computational problems. Anticipating future trendsin intelligent design, MagicMC integrates several advanced features, including CAD-based geometry modeling,global variance reduction methods, multi-objective shielding optimization, high-resolution activation analysis,multi-physics coupling, and radiation therapy. In this paper, various numerical benchmarks—spanning reactortransient simulations, material activation analysis, radiation shielding optimization, and medical dosimetry anal-ysis—are presented to validate MagicMC. The numerical results demonstrate MagicMC’s efficiency, accuracy,and reliability in these preliminary applications, underscoring its potential to support technological advance-ments in developing high-fidelity, high-resolution, and high-intelligence MC-based tools for advanced nuclearapplications.

Abstract:We outline our experience in organizing the first edition of the Workshop on Matter, Astrophysics, Gravitation, Ions and Cosmology, held in virtual and in‐person format, denominated MAGIC23, held from 6 to 10 March, 2023, in Praia do Rosa, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The event aimed to bring together leading academic scientists, professors, students, and research scholars for exchanging experiences and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, practical challenges, and experimental and theoretical solutions adopted in the investigation fields within the scope of the meeting. The workshop offered to the participants a platform for scientific and academic projects, partnerships, and presentation of high‐quality research contributions describing original and unpublished results on topics related to matter, astrophysics, gravitation, ions, and cosmology.

Abstract:A powerful and robust control system is a crucial, often neglected, pillar of any modern, complex physics experiment that requires the management of a multitude of different devices and their precise time synchronisation. The AEgIS collaboration presents CIRCUS, a novel, autonomous control system optimised for time-critical experiments such as those at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator and, more broadly, in atomic and quantum physics research. Its setup is based on Sinara/ARTIQ and TALOS, integrating the ALPACA analysis pipeline, the last two developed entirely in AEgIS. It is suitable for strict synchronicity requirements and repeatable, automated operation of experiments, culminating in autonomous parameter optimisation via feedback from real-time data analysis. CIRCUS has been successfully deployed and tested in AEgIS; being experiment-agnostic and released open-source, other experiments can leverage its capabilities.

Abstract:IceCube-Gen2 is a planned next-generation neutrino observatory at the South Pole that builds upon the successful design of IceCube. Integrating two complementary detection technologies for neutrinos, optical and radio Cherenkov emission, in combination with a surface array for cosmic ray air shower detection, IceCube-Gen2 will cover a broad neutrino energy range from MeV to EeV. This index of contributions to the 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Nagoya, Japan (July 26 - August 3, 2023) describes research and development efforts for IceCube-Gen2. Included are summaries of the design, status, and sensitivity of the IceCube-Gen2 optical, surface, and radio components; performance studies of next-generation optical sensors detecting optical Cherenkov radiation from cosmic ray and neutrino events; reconstruction techniques of radio and optical events in terms of energy, direction, and neutrino flavor; and sensitivity studies of astrophysical neutrino flavors, diffuse neutrino fluxes, and cosmic ray anisotropies. Contributions related to IceCube and the scheduled IceCube Upgrade are available in a separate collection.

However, the development process of such tools frequently differs from conventional software development; partly because of the nature of research, where the problems being addressed are not always fully understood; partly because the majority of the development is often carried out by scientists with limited experience and exposure to best practices of software engineering. Often the software development suffers from the pressure to publish scientific results and that credit for software development is limited in comparison. Fundamental components of software engineering like modular and reusable design, validation, documentation, and software integration as well as effective maintenance and user support tend to be disregarded due to lack of resources and qualified specialists. Thus innovative developments are often hindered by steep learning curves required to master development for legacy software packages full of ad hoc solutions. The growing complexity of research, however, requires suitable and maintainable computational tools, resulting in a widening gap between the potential users (often growing in number) and contributors to the development of such a package. In this paper we share our experiences aiming to improve the situation by training particularly young scientists, through disseminating our own experiences at contributing to open source software packages and practicing key components of software engineering adapted for scientists and scientific software development. Specifically we summarize the outcome of the Workshop in Advanced Techniques for Scientific Programming and Collaborative Development of Open Source Software Packages run at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in March 2013, and discuss our conclusions for future efforts.
Multinational AGI Consortium (MAGIC): A Proposal for International Coordination on AI

Abstract:This paper proposes a Multinational Artificial General Intelligence Consortium (MAGIC) to mitigate existential risks from advanced artificial intelligence (AI). MAGIC would be the only institution in the world permitted to develop advanced AI, enforced through a global moratorium by its signatory members on all other advanced AI development. MAGIC would be exclusive, safety-focused, highly secure, and collectively supported by member states, with benefits distributed equitably among signatories. MAGIC would allow narrow AI models to flourish while significantly reducing the possibility of misaligned, rogue, breakout, or runaway outcomes of general-purpose systems. We do not address the political feasibility of implementing a moratorium or address the specific legislative strategies and rules needed to enforce a ban on high-capacity AGI training runs. Instead, we propose one positive vision of the future, where MAGIC, as a global governance regime, can lay the groundwork for long-term, safe regulation of advanced AI.

Abstract:Instruments for gamma-ray astronomy at Very High Energies ($E>100\,{\rm GeV}$) have traditionally derived their scientific results through proprietary data and software. Data standardisation has become a prominent issue in this field both as a requirement for the dissemination of data from the next generation of gamma-ray observatories and as an effective solution to realise public data legacies of current-generation instruments. Specifications for a standardised gamma-ray data format have been proposed as a community effort and have already been successfully adopted by several instruments. We present the first production of standardised data from the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes. We converted $166\,{\rm h}$ of observations from different sources and validated their analysis with the open-source software Gammapy. We consider six data sets representing different scientific and technical analysis cases and compare the results obtained analysing the standardised data with open-source software against those produced with the MAGIC proprietary data and software. Aiming at a systematic production of MAGIC data in this standardised format, we also present the implementation of a database-driven pipeline automatically performing the MAGIC data reduction from the calibrated down to the standardised data level. In all the cases selected for the validation, we obtain results compatible with the MAGIC proprietary software, both for the manual and for the automatic data productions. Part of the validation data set is also made publicly available, thus representing the first large public release of MAGIC data. This effort and this first data release represent a technical milestone toward the realisation of a public MAGIC data legacy.

Abstract:An infrastructure for remote instrument access, data acquisition and data management is being developed for e-Research. The Common Instrument Middleware Architecture (CIMA) is being used to provide a scalable and extensible basis for the cyberinfrastructure, and X-ray diffraction is targeted as an ideal development domain. Australian research is enhancing the CIMA model to enable the use of federated Grid storage infrastructure (SRB), and the use of the Kepler workflow system. Kepler has been introduced to enable automated data management, and the facile extraction and generation of instrument and experimental metadata. The system permits experimental data to be deposited into the SRB data store in real time in a schema that allows for searching on the basis of metadata or user supplied annotations, image file previewing and data management and download. The CCLRC scientific metadata model is being adopted for metadata definition. In addition to monitoring, CIMA is being further extended to support instrument control, and is being embedded as a component in a feature rich portal for remote instrument access. The portal utilises AJAX and Pushlet technologies for portlet refresh and updating. An X3D based 3D virtual representation of the instrument provides data collection simulation and (pseudo) real time instrument representation. The system is being further augmented with an embryonic tool for multi-user collaborative data evaluation.
